[00:00:02.700]seeks to learn, preserve, and disseminate the story
[00:00:05.690]of African-Americans who homesteaded in the Great Plains.
[00:00:09.260]The project is a collaborative effort
[00:00:11.650]with Nicodemus National Historic Site
[00:00:14.470]and Homestead National Historic Park.
[00:00:16.920]And it's partially funded by the National Park Service.
[00:00:20.050]The research has produced a general survey
[00:00:22.290]of Black homesteaders in eight states,
[00:00:24.770]Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota,
[00:00:27.380]South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado.
[00:00:31.930]The research will create the first extensive database
[00:00:35.050]of Black homesteaders in these States.
[00:00:37.940]The project also focuses on six important
[00:00:40.460]Black homesteading communities or colonies,
[00:00:43.290]Blackdom, New Mexico, Nicodemus, Kansas,
[00:00:46.410]DeWitty, Nebraska, Empire, Wyoming, Dearfield, Colorado,
[00:00:50.760]and Sully County, South Dakota.
[00:00:52.920]They are the largest and longest lived communities
[00:00:55.510]in each state.
[00:00:56.980]This is just one of the many projects
[00:00:58.640]the Center is working on to fulfill our mission
[00:01:01.050]of increasing understanding of our region.

[00:01:04.990]in this year's Glow Big Red event.
