The Center for Great Plains Studies strives to bring quality free programming to the state, region, and beyond. In 2020, we launched a new version of our Paul A. Olson lectures by creating a video and podcast series called "Great Plains: Anywhere." This series allows us to continue to share interesting Great Plains topics in new ways while being unable to gather for traditional lectures. [00:00:01.233]temporarily ended our in-person lectures,
[00:00:03.620]the Center for Great Plains Studies launched a video
[00:00:05.900]and podcast series called Great Plains: Anywhere,
[00:00:09.160]a multimedia version
[00:00:10.500]of our popular Paul A. Olson Great Plains lectures.
[00:00:14.480]Since last summer, we've released eight episodes
[00:00:17.030]on various topics,
[00:00:18.240]including bees at the UNL Bee Lab with Judy Wu-Smart,
[00:00:22.250]extreme weather at the Great Plains with Ken Dewey,
[00:00:25.230]and how the pandemic is affecting meatpacking communities
[00:00:28.210]with Will Aviles, among many other topics.
[00:00:31.150]Something that's really been on my mind
[00:00:34.000]and in my heart a lot lately is the connection
[00:00:37.320]between COVID-19 and food sovereignty.
[00:00:41.200]And those two, a lot of people, I think,
[00:00:42.970]might seem like really disparate topics,
[00:00:48.440]but particularly within indigenous communities,
[00:00:52.380]they're incredibly connected.
[00:00:55.000]When we talk about COVID-19 and its impact...
[00:00:58.230]And I was so fascinated by that,
[00:00:59.970]and so really began investigating places
[00:01:03.460]like natural history museums, field guides,
[00:01:08.410]all these different places where our ideas
[00:01:10.550]about the natural world are presented to us
[00:01:14.490]in a very particular way
[00:01:16.250]and what does that mean for our actual feelings
[00:01:21.080]about the natural world.
[00:01:22.660]And the queen will live
[00:01:23.680]about two to four years traditionally,
[00:01:26.320]but nowadays, they have to replace,
[00:01:29.290]be replaced couple times a year,
[00:01:31.710]and that's just because of the stress
[00:01:33.210]of all the chemical exposures
[00:01:35.610]and migratory stress of being moved around.
[00:01:38.110]Different individuals started organizing
[00:01:40.210]once it seemed clear that the meatpacking,
[00:01:43.620]the plants themselves
[00:01:44.453]were not going to be changing their behavior
[00:01:47.750]and that workers were gonna be expected
[00:01:49.230]to still be working right on top of each other,
[00:01:53.070]very fast lines on the factory floor,
[00:01:56.240]and in just an absolutely vulnerable situation
[00:01:58.809]when it comes to the spread of the virus.
