- [00:00:01.800]Hi everyone. And welcome to the Institute for International TAs.
- [00:00:05.810]My name is Lisa Rohde and I am the associate director of teaching and research
- [00:00:10.310]development.
- [00:00:10.970]And in the office of graduate studies at the university of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:15.800]I will also be one of your instructors over the next couple of weeks weeks. So,
- [00:00:20.180]I wanted to take a few minutes and introduce myself.
- [00:00:23.630]You are welcome to call me Dr. Rohde or Lisa, whichever you prefer.
- [00:00:27.650]I will answer to both.
- [00:00:32.000]Since we'll be working together a lot over the next couple of weeks,
- [00:00:34.280]I wanted to do tell you a little bit about my background,
- [00:00:37.250]just so you get to know me a little bit better. So I am,
- [00:00:41.630]I'm originally from a place called Richardson, Texas,
- [00:00:44.210]which is a city just outside Dallas, Texas. Um,
- [00:00:48.590]for those of you who are not as familiar with us geography,
- [00:00:53.360]um, and I know you may not be able to see this map super well. Um,
- [00:00:56.750]Lincoln is there and Dallas is there and that's about 600 miles between the two
- [00:01:03.380]or a nine to 10 hour drive.
- [00:01:05.900]So it's quite a distance between here and where I grew up. Um,
- [00:01:10.820]it's also a much larger city.
- [00:01:12.230]So Dallas is about 7 million people and Lincoln is a lot smaller than that.
- [00:01:18.110]So, my mom and my sister still live in the area, my brother,
- [00:01:21.770]his wife and daughter all live in Zurich, Switzerland.
- [00:01:26.780]So a little bit about my educational history.
- [00:01:28.760]So I went to Elon University in North Carolina for my undergraduate degree,
- [00:01:33.740]um, where I studied psychology. And then for graduate school,
- [00:01:37.820]I went to the University of Georgia where I studied educational psychology,
- [00:01:42.470]which is basically the study of how teachers teach and how students learn.
- [00:01:47.600]And so I've spent a lot of time,
- [00:01:49.550]both in grad school and afterwards thinking about how to teach effectively and
- [00:01:54.230]how to help others learn to teach effectively.
- [00:01:58.400]And over the last year, years in particular,
- [00:02:00.890]I've worked almost exclusively with TAs helping them learn to teach.
- [00:02:05.660]And so, as you could probably guess,
- [00:02:07.940]this is one of my favorite experiences is working with TAs and helping you guys
- [00:02:12.020]learn to teach effectively.
- [00:02:16.010]So I also like to share,
- [00:02:18.500]just a little bit fun tidbit about myself as well.
- [00:02:21.530]So I grew up playing volleyball and so I actually still play volleyball.
- [00:02:26.610]There's a lot of recreational leagues in Lincoln.
- [00:02:28.880]And so I will play sort of throughout the year when leagues are going on.
- [00:02:34.340]Um, we'll probably continue to do so for years to come, um,
- [00:02:38.090]because I really enjoy doing so. And lastly,
- [00:02:41.750]I just wanted to let you guys know. Um,
- [00:02:44.360]so as you can probably tell English is my native language. Um,
- [00:02:48.890]but because I grew up in Texas and has spent a lot of time in the Southern
- [00:02:53.690]United States,
- [00:02:55.160]I may occasionally say things that are Southern slang or Southern
- [00:03:00.010]colloquialisms,
- [00:03:03.790]or things like y'all.
- [00:03:05.650]If at any point I say something that you do not understand,
- [00:03:09.220]or I start speaking really quickly and you don't understand what's being said,
- [00:03:13.030]um, they'll hesitate to contact me and ask what I said. Um,
- [00:03:17.680]I would, I will not be upset.
- [00:03:19.960]I know that sometimes it can be difficult to understand some of those regional
- [00:03:23.710]colloquialisms, if you're not a native English speaker,
- [00:03:27.430]I'm really looking forward to working with you all. And so let's get started.
