- [00:00:20.120]2020 was not the year we planned for.
- [00:00:22.990]I am proud we remain committed
- [00:00:24.820]to three core values that define UNL,
- [00:00:28.030]access, innovation and academic excellence.
- [00:00:31.860]This year numbers of incoming diverse students
- [00:00:34.670]again increased up 83% since 2010.
- [00:00:40.200]Departments develop more than a dozen new degree
- [00:00:42.920]in certificate programs, even as faculty move thousands
- [00:00:46.560]of classes to remote learning last spring,
- [00:00:49.340]rethought summer and fall and enrolled 4,000 students
- [00:00:53.490]for newly developed winter room classes.
- [00:00:56.210]It is good to see strong and increasing national recognition
- [00:00:59.750]of the reach and caliber of our academic programs reflected
- [00:01:03.422]in our rankings and in the thousands of national
- [00:01:06.470]and international students who are joining us as part
- [00:01:09.670]of the Husker community.

- [00:01:13.760]At no time have architecture design and planning
- [00:01:17.070]had as much public awareness
- [00:01:18.950]of their impact and importance as now.
- [00:01:22.510]Then it is no wonder values established
- [00:01:25.320]during our recent strategic planning process guide us
- [00:01:28.780]in shaping the professions, establishing a culture
- [00:01:32.130]within our college and impacting others through our work.
- [00:01:36.990]Our faculty shaped the future of the professions
- [00:01:39.779]and education by serving on national accreditation
- [00:01:43.830]and professional education association boards.
- [00:01:47.160]Our reputation for academic excellence

- [00:01:52.090]and numerous prestigious national awards,
- [00:01:55.022]even in a pandemic.
- [00:01:57.040]Our students and faculty partnered with extension
- [00:02:00.210]and assisted the town of Brownsville with flood recovery
- [00:02:03.700]and planning, explored affordable housing solutions
- [00:02:07.290]for valentine and investigated concepts
- [00:02:10.310]for biodiversity and environmental justice.

- [00:02:15.240]In response to the challenges of COVID 19,
- [00:02:17.370]our college launched an emergency support fund,
- [00:02:19.740]Cas Cares to help students stay on track
- [00:02:21.950]for degree completion.
- [00:02:23.350]Over 30 students benefited from these funds last fall.
- [00:02:26.570]The college will complete a year long
- [00:02:28.040]comprehensive strategic planning process this spring.
- [00:02:31.010]Our guiding vision is succinct and ambitious.
- [00:02:33.610]Through imagination, innovation and collaboration,
- [00:02:36.550]we will transform lives and improve our world.

- [00:03:33.100]we await final approval of a new undergraduate law

- [00:03:45.720]and contracts.
- [00:03:47.063]Building upon the success of our top ranked MBA
- [00:03:50.410]at Nebraska Program, we launched

- [00:04:00.690]In fall 2020,
- [00:04:02.150]we introduced the inclusive excellence gathering space
- [00:04:05.710]in support of our guiding principle , "be inclusive."
- [00:04:09.190]This along with our new inclusive excellence advisory board
- [00:04:12.337]and a new student organization helps us
- [00:04:14.498]to increase diversity and create a stronger
- [00:04:16.867]more inclusive community.

- [00:04:20.680]2020 proof that when society is faced with challenges,
- [00:04:24.590]CEHS has solutions that enhance lives
- [00:04:27.760]and strengthen relationships.
- [00:04:29.900]In response to COVID-19,
- [00:04:32.020]our reading center rapidly transitioned
- [00:04:34.400]its tutoring programs online and piloted a remote program
- [00:04:38.740]with Sydney public schools.
- [00:04:40.960]When sports and other activities were canceled,
- [00:04:43.900]our extension faculty created a virtual marathon kids club
- [00:04:48.150]with participants logging over 4,200 miles.
- [00:04:52.230]The college also took important steps to enhance our journey
- [00:04:55.730]toward inclusive excellence.
- [00:04:57.710]Through a fire
- [00:04:58.800]and our Racial Literacy Round Table Programs,
- [00:05:01.820]over 700 people participated in educational workshops
- [00:05:05.840]that promoted inclusion, respect, and equity.
- [00:05:09.530]And in research and creative activity,
- [00:05:12.070]we earned a record high number of grant awards.
- [00:05:15.500]So as our new home on city campus rises,
- [00:05:18.740]so too does the impact of CEHS.

- [00:05:24.530]on our $160 million investment in engineering facilities.
- [00:05:28.740]Phase one is the $75 million rebuild
- [00:05:31.800]of the link and renovation of Scott Engineering Center.
- [00:05:35.420]The research conducted
- [00:05:36.500]in these buildings is increasing the competitiveness
- [00:05:39.112]of Nebraska industry,
- [00:05:41.210]generated valuable intellectual property
- [00:05:43.540]and creating new companies and jobs.
- [00:05:45.930]We're building Kiewit Hall,
- [00:05:47.160]thanks to a $20 million naming gift
- [00:05:49.210]from Kiewit Corporation and other donor support.
- [00:05:52.420]Opening in the fall of 2023, Kiewit Hall will help us
- [00:05:56.050]provide a world-class engineering education
- [00:05:58.840]and meet the workforce needs of the state
- [00:06:00.830]and region.
- [00:06:02.220]In partnership with senior executives
- [00:06:04.010]and University of Nebraska alumni at Kiewit Corporation,
- [00:06:07.530]we created the Kiewit Scholars Program,
- [00:06:10.100]a full tuition scholarship combined
- [00:06:11.945]with a rigorous leadership program
- [00:06:14.200]that will support 40 undergraduate students.
- [00:06:17.340]This program is unparalleled among our big 10 peers
- [00:06:20.310]and other top ranking colleges of engineering.
- [00:06:23.230]We are living our values of community, impact and inclusion.

- [00:06:30.420]Despite a global pandemic, we continued to learn,
- [00:06:33.770]teach, perform, and exhibit the arts in a safe way.
- [00:06:37.830]I'm very proud of how our college excelled
- [00:06:40.209]during these challenging times.
- [00:06:42.600]For instance, our college saw a 4% increase
- [00:06:45.570]in undergraduate enrollment last fall.
- [00:06:47.960]Our Glenn Korff School of Music's Opera Program
- [00:06:50.250]safely produced its opera, "The Cunning Little Vixen"
- [00:06:53.370]with live outdoor performances.
- [00:06:56.130]our School of Art, History and Design
- [00:06:58.150]presented virtual exhibits of student artwork.
- [00:07:01.540]And the Nebraska Repertory Theatre
- [00:07:03.300]launched a two year partnership
- [00:07:05.530]with the St. Louis Black Repertory Company
- [00:07:07.800]to bring about positive social change to our university
- [00:07:10.818]and beyond.
- [00:07:12.350]And our JoJohnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts
- [00:07:15.650]received an AIA Nebraska Architecture Merit Award
- [00:07:19.280]for its building design.
- [00:07:20.899]And finally, I'd like to thank our community who rose
- [00:07:23.660]to support our dance program.
- [00:07:25.940]It's the only undergraduate dance degree in the state
- [00:07:28.920]and it will be better than ever things
- [00:07:30.910]to overwhelming support from many of you.

- [00:07:35.050]While the pandemic forced us to make some adjustments,
- [00:07:37.690]it didn't slow us down.
- [00:07:39.450]Our students covered the Iowa caucuses
- [00:07:41.310]and track political news coverage.
- [00:07:43.300]They covered COVID-19 for the New York Times
- [00:07:45.620]and received national attention
- [00:07:47.020]for depth reporting on the climate crisis.
- [00:07:49.430]They covered Husker Sports,
- [00:07:50.980]even when they couldn't attend games.
- [00:07:53.070]They worked on advertising and public relations campaigns
- [00:07:55.520]for more than 50 university
- [00:07:56.870]and community partners and distributed hundreds
- [00:07:59.280]of stories to news organizations across the State
- [00:08:02.140]through the Nebraska News Service.
- [00:08:04.040]Art cabinets are once again
- [00:08:05.470]busting at the hinges with awards
- [00:08:07.030]for outstanding student work,
- [00:08:08.179]which we are now able to show off
- [00:08:10.410]in our renovated Anderson Hall lobby.

- [00:08:16.190]which involved over 75 faculty, staff, students, alumni
- [00:08:19.490]and industry partners to develop new initiatives

- [00:08:25.270]new graduate and research programs and expansion of course
- [00:08:28.590]offerings in the media, social justice and democracy.

- [00:08:33.900]I am excited to share some College of Law successes.
- [00:08:37.210]Our Civil Clinical Law Program joined with several area
- [00:08:39.940]non-profits to create the tenant assistance project
- [00:08:43.600]pairing residents facing eviction with volunteer
- [00:08:46.090]and student attorneys trained to provide limited
- [00:08:48.810]free representation in court.
- [00:08:50.810]They leveled the legal playing field for tenants
- [00:08:53.210]during the pandemic.
- [00:08:55.020]The new Nebraska Governance and Technology Center
- [00:08:57.390]launched an ambitious set of projects,
- [00:08:59.750]including a podcast series
- [00:09:01.550]of faculty and student fellows program
- [00:09:03.800]and research on complex tech policy issues,
- [00:09:06.720]such as solving the rural digital divide.
- [00:09:09.779]During the past year, the College of Law
- [00:09:11.730]finished a $6 million fundraising effort
- [00:09:14.530]to renovate the Schmid Law Library.
- [00:09:16.900]This renovation will add to state-of-the-art classrooms
- [00:09:19.760]and allow our talented librarians to teach our students
- [00:09:22.880]and the broader legal community, the latest techniques
- [00:09:25.790]for using technology and digital resources
- [00:09:28.490]to solve problems and advanced justice.

- [00:09:43.620]after a 19 month renovation
- [00:09:45.810]of the former CY Thompson Library.
- [00:09:48.260]This space is now shared by the libraries,
- [00:09:51.240]the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program
- [00:09:53.660]Husker Tech, the East Campus Exam Commons
- [00:09:56.530]and the East Campus Visitor Center.
- [00:09:59.050]Our other major achievement was migration
- [00:10:00.990]to a cloud-based enterprise library services platform.
- [00:10:04.460]You'll see us refer to this as our online catalog,
- [00:10:07.190]but it's really the library's nerve center and how we manage
- [00:10:10.570]and provide access to all of our collections.
- [00:10:13.660]We think students and faculty will only notice
- [00:10:15.902]that their access is fast, seamless and easy.
- [00:10:19.740]We've just released the UNL Library's strategic plan
- [00:10:22.840]woven throughout with a commitment to information justice

- [00:10:40.460]are woven into the fabric of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:10:44.200]We have the third largest Ag economy in the United States
- [00:10:47.760]in large part because of our state's history in innovation.
- [00:10:52.790]In 2020 UNL was recognized as one of the top 20
- [00:10:56.670]agricultural research programs in the US

- [00:11:02.670]We focus on innovating new ways to provide fuel, food,
- [00:11:06.830]feed and fiber for a growing world
- [00:11:09.530]while conserving and sustaining our natural resources.

- [00:11:31.670]is in the midst of an exciting time.

- [00:11:34.990]we launched the Changemaker Scholarship Competition
- [00:11:38.140]to recruit innovative students from around the world.
- [00:11:41.330]Through the Changemaker program,
- [00:11:42.970]students bring to life a big idea that addresses

- [00:11:48.080]We announced the new
- [00:11:48.990]LPS CASNR Early College and Career STEM Program.
- [00:11:52.480]It offers Lincoln Northeast students
- [00:11:54.500]the opportunity to earn early college credits
- [00:11:57.240]and digital badges.
- [00:11:58.750]We anticipate this program will be replicated
- [00:12:01.210]across Nebraska, and we are transforming graduate education
- [00:12:05.830]in the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:12:09.690]Nebraska extension helped our state's producers,
- [00:12:13.040]educators, families, and others successfully navigate
- [00:12:17.430]the pandemic.
- [00:12:18.680]Our local extension offices remained open for business.
- [00:12:22.140]For each fairs engaged tens of thousands of youth.
- [00:12:24.963]And we launched a new program, Rural Prosperity Nebraska.
- [00:12:29.140]Our impacts were wide ranging in 2020.
