- [00:00:06.860]I was very grateful to be asked
- [00:00:08.350]to introduce the first student panel
- [00:00:10.790]of the E.N. Thompson Forum,
- [00:00:12.417]"Naming the Beast: Climate Change
- [00:00:14.270]and Our Youth Taking Action"
- [00:00:16.190]We chose this title because especially in Nebraska,
- [00:00:18.860]the word climate change can both spark
- [00:00:20.780]and end conversations.
- [00:00:22.660]We wanted to show the different ways that generations
- [00:00:25.360]are not only taking on the word but the movement behind it.
- [00:00:29.010]The panelists for the event come from a diverse array
- [00:00:31.880]of backgrounds and each have their own journey
- [00:00:33.830]with the environment and climate change.
- [00:00:36.280]Steven Kirchner is a former UNL student
- [00:00:38.680]who graduated in 2019.
- [00:00:40.720]He has worked with Our Climate, a national nonprofit,
- [00:00:44.040]to help young people win climate policy,
- [00:00:46.540]both in Nebraska and across the country.
- [00:00:49.430]Graham Christensen is a founder of several organizations,
- [00:00:52.890]including GC Resolve,
- [00:00:54.570]which supports regenerative farming practices
- [00:00:57.380]through agriculture and energy sectors.
- [00:01:00.050]He himself is a fifth generation farmer
- [00:01:02.240]and works with other farmers in Nebraska
- [00:01:04.640]to advocate for climate conversations.
- [00:01:07.630]Vivian Nguyen was both an undergraduate
- [00:01:10.150]and graduate student at UNL.
- [00:01:12.240]During her time here, she founded Sustain UNL,
- [00:01:15.210]organized the first earth stock,
- [00:01:16.920]and served on the first ASUN Green Fund Committee.
- [00:01:20.040]She now works for the Kaizen Company in Washington, DC
- [00:01:23.110]to promote international development around the world.
- [00:01:26.290]Nancy Kyle is a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe
- [00:01:29.260]and built the first earth ship home in Nebraska
- [00:01:31.870]in the northwest part of the state.
- [00:01:34.280]She works to promote sustainable rural lifestyle
- [00:01:37.320]in her own life and advocates
- [00:01:38.830]for water rights in Northwest Nebraska.
- [00:01:41.610]The moderator for the event will be Brittni McGuire,
- [00:01:44.220]a current senior at UNL.
- [00:01:46.590]She was the former president of Sustain UNL
- [00:01:49.030]and during her time as a student,
- [00:01:50.510]has been active both on campus, in the community,
- [00:01:53.700]and at the capitol for sustainable issues.
- [00:01:57.330]Along with the panel,
- [00:01:58.400]E.N. Thompson has a special opportunity
- [00:02:00.650]for registered student organizations
- [00:02:03.050]working towards sustainability on campus.
- [00:02:05.810]This is a chance for UNL clubs to be financially awarded
- [00:02:09.400]for sustainable ideas in the realms of transportation,
- [00:02:12.740]energy waste management
- [00:02:14.560]and sustainability in the face of COVID-19.
- [00:02:17.570]We've extended the deadline to March 1st
- [00:02:19.870]and the winner will be recognized
- [00:02:21.340]at the Ann Bancroft E.N. Thompson event.
- [00:02:24.580]The panel discussion will cover several topics focused
- [00:02:27.740]on the intersections of Nebraska values and climate change,
- [00:02:31.510]including the disconnect of different sectors in Nebraska,
- [00:02:34.594]how climate justice is a multi-generational fight,
- [00:02:37.890]and the role that students can have in the climate movement.
