Buros Graduate Assistant, Analay Perez, explains the top five reasons why graduate students should use Pruebas Publicadas en Español II. PPE II consists of descriptive listings of commercially published tests that are available in part or wholly in Spanish. It builds on the established traditions of the Buros Center for Testing and its long-standing publication series – The Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print. PPE II provides extensive and vital information about tests. It offers descriptions of more than 600 tests, using 22 descriptor fields to acquaint test users with available measures and to facilitate appropriate selection of tests. To maximize its accessibility, PPE II content appears side by side in Spanish and English throughout the volume.

- [00:00:16.730]University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:18.860]And my purpose here today is to share some really great information with you
- [00:00:23.270]about one of the resources that we have to offer here at the Buros Center
- [00:00:27.620]for Testing.
- [00:00:29.750]Have you ever found yourself wondering if a psychological test is available in
- [00:00:33.350]Spanish?
- [00:00:34.460]Have you ever wondered if maybe a translated test that you're using with a
- [00:00:38.570]Spanish speaking client has norms for Spanish speakers?
- [00:00:42.350]And have you ever questioned if a resource exists that details information on
- [00:00:46.970]available test in Spanish, across disciplines, such as speech,
- [00:00:50.810]language pathology, cognitive psychology, or developmental psychology? Well,
- [00:00:55.340]I'm here to tell you that that resource exists and it's called Pruebas Publicadas en Español
- [00:01:00.440]or PPE. And I'm excited to tell you all about it today.
- [00:01:04.100]So what exactly is PPE? PPE is a comprehensive bibliography of Spanish test that
- [00:01:09.950]was developed here at Buros Center for Testing as a goal set forward by Oscar
- [00:01:14.900]Buros. It's actually a compendium of commercially available tests,
- [00:01:19.850]that are either fully or partly in Spanish.
- [00:01:23.930]So currently we're on our second volume of the PPE and that was published in
- [00:01:29.120]October of 2018.
- [00:01:31.190]It's important to note that each volume replaces the previous volume with
- [00:01:35.360]updated information such as norms,
- [00:01:37.910]as we know that this information can change from year to year.
- [00:01:41.270]So in this video today,
- [00:01:43.250]I'm going to outline the top five reasons why you want to use PPE
- [00:01:48.890]as a graduate student.
- [00:01:52.140]The first reason to access is because it provides instrumental information about
- [00:01:57.170]test descriptions that are written by the Buros staff and not test publishers.
- [00:02:01.490]And this is important to know because it really provides an
- [00:02:04.760]unbiased view of tests.
- [00:02:05.780]Each test description is broken down by several components to help you evaluate
- [00:02:10.550]the best measure for your intended purpose.
- [00:02:13.130]Test descriptions also contain critical information about each test,
- [00:02:17.510]such as the origin of the test, whether the test originated
- [00:02:22.400]in another country such as Mexico, Spain, or Puerto Rico,
- [00:02:26.900]or the United States.
- [00:02:28.460]Additional information found in TIP is also available.
- [00:02:34.340]This information provides graduate students and professionals with a really
- [00:02:37.940]thorough understanding of the test and its intended use.
- [00:02:41.420]In order to help you make decisions of which measures are
- [00:02:46.010]best for your intended purpose.
- [00:02:50.750]The second reason to use PPE is because of its ease of presentation of
- [00:02:55.040]information. PPE offers a side by side English and Spanish format.
- [00:02:59.950]This makes it easily accessible for both English and Spanish speakers.
- [00:03:03.940]The descriptions show,
- [00:03:05.530]which components are in English and which components are in Spanish.
- [00:03:12.000]The third reason for using PPE is because it serves as a test index.
- [00:03:16.530]PPE includes several indexes that allow users to search for information in a
- [00:03:21.570]variety of ways. For example, titles,
- [00:03:25.380]acronyms scores,
- [00:03:27.180]and others that are provided in both English and Spanish,
- [00:03:30.990]as well as additional indexes.
- [00:03:35.220]The fourth reason to use PPE is because it gives you support with your research.
- [00:03:39.300]So now that we know what type of information you can find in PPE,
- [00:03:43.800]you can use that information to help you with your dissertation,
- [00:03:47.880]your thesis research projects,
- [00:03:50.370]as well as choosing the appropriate measure for Spanish speaking clients,
- [00:03:55.590]PPE distinguishes between tests that have been translated
- [00:03:58.710]and those that have been adopted. And when we talk about tests
- [00:04:02.400]that have been translated,
- [00:04:03.420]that it refers to the literal translation of test content
- [00:04:08.280]from one language to the next.
- [00:04:09.210]Whereas a test that has been adopted is more than just translating.
- [00:04:13.290]It takes into account the cultural demographic and geographical differences so
- [00:04:18.930]that the resulting test is both appropriate and
- [00:04:22.770]accurate for your intended population.
- [00:04:24.750]Knowing this information is critical and will allow you to choose the best
- [00:04:28.890]measure that's most appropriate for your intended purposes.
