- [00:00:04.870]So the question of who owns farmland in America
- [00:00:08.060]is right at the heart of so many of our grand challenges
- [00:00:11.400]in the world right now.
- [00:00:12.520]So not only about the future of rural communities
- [00:00:15.160]and landscapes and who's going to live there and why,
- [00:00:17.880]but the future of our environment and our climate
- [00:00:20.350]and sustainability and how we produce food
- [00:00:22.480]and feed people in this world.
- [00:00:23.950]And then also core issues of racial justice and equity
- [00:00:27.020]and who's included and who's excluded.
- [00:00:29.360]Property is right at the heart of that.
- [00:00:31.060](lively music)
- [00:00:35.810]I am researching who owns rural farmlands and why
- [00:00:39.970]and really especially what property law
- [00:00:42.640]and property scholarship could have to say
- [00:00:44.810]about the future of those lands.
- [00:00:46.904](lively music)
- [00:00:53.560]A lot of farmers are aging
- [00:00:54.870]and there's going to be a big transition
- [00:00:56.570]in who owns farmland in America.
- [00:00:59.150]And I'm really asking questions
- [00:01:00.830]about how we can open access to those properties
- [00:01:04.520]for new farmers and ranchers,
- [00:01:06.460]and particularly new farmers and ranchers of color
- [00:01:09.270]and indigenous farmers and ranchers
- [00:01:11.083](lively music)
- [00:01:15.360]So one of the things that I think people
- [00:01:17.690]sort of take for granted about property
- [00:01:19.550]is that they take it for granted.
- [00:01:21.160]They think that it's a really stuck institution
- [00:01:23.500]that's not able to be reformed or to change,
- [00:01:26.940]but in fact, my work shows that property over time
- [00:01:30.190]is actually quite adaptable.
- [00:01:32.320]So I think that the kind of work that I'm doing here
- [00:01:35.460]and that colleagues are doing really opens the door
- [00:01:38.380]to thinking about how property can be more sustainable,
- [00:01:41.590]more open for more people,
- [00:01:43.530]and achieve our goals of justice in rural places.
- [00:01:46.632](lively music)
- [00:01:56.031]Nebraska is a place where rural issues,
- [00:01:59.050]rural questions really matter and are valued
- [00:02:01.490]and are important to consider.
- [00:02:03.240]And so there's a lot of support for that here.
- [00:02:05.240]I get to work with amazing students at Nebraska
- [00:02:07.950]and think about and work on
- [00:02:10.040]and engage with the issues that matter so much
- [00:02:12.740]for the world.
- [00:02:13.650]I actually feel like I have the best job
- [00:02:15.240]in the world.
