- [00:00:05.210]Well, welcome to Stretching Your Strengths in CEHS. I'm Paul Springer,
- [00:00:09.110]I'm the Associate Dean for Student Success in the College of Education and Human
- [00:00:12.830]Sciences. And I'd like to welcome you back to really new and exciting semester.
- [00:00:18.200]Today we're going to be meeting with Sophie Johnson.
- [00:00:21.350]She's the current president of the College Student Advisory Board.
- [00:00:24.830]And I've asked her to come talk about some of the great experiences you may have
- [00:00:29.390]or opportunities to have to be part of the student advisory board. So Sophie,
- [00:00:33.620]can you tell us a little bit more about what the student advisory board is?
- [00:00:37.130]Yes, of course.
- [00:00:38.540]So the student advisory board is a committee of undergraduate students,
- [00:00:43.790]that meets twice monthly and we discuss
- [00:00:47.810]topics and issues going on within the college. We serve as a liaison,
- [00:00:51.890]kind of between the staff, faculty, students, and the dean.
- [00:00:56.090]We provide the student's voice in issues within the college and decisions being
- [00:01:00.500]made. We have four committees within our student advisory board,
- [00:01:05.270]which are the Events Committee and they plan events such as the welcome event
- [00:01:09.020]that we had at the beginning of the year.
- [00:01:10.850]We also have the Communications Committee that runs our social media,
- [00:01:14.690]and we have the Peer Mentor Committee that runs our Peer Network Program.
- [00:01:20.420]And then our final committee is a Student International Advisory Committee.
- [00:01:24.470]Sophie,
- [00:01:24.890]why don't you talk a little bit about how being involved in the Student Advisory
- [00:01:28.520]Board has actually kind of helped your academic career and how has it been a
- [00:01:32.810]value added for you?
- [00:01:34.370]Yes,
- [00:01:34.880]so being involved in the Student Advisory Board has really opened my eyes to
- [00:01:39.080]kind of the big picture of everything.
- [00:01:41.510]You don't just see the student perspective anymore.
- [00:01:44.420]You kind of see what's going on behind the scenes more so,
- [00:01:48.500]and you think more through, well, this teacher.
- [00:01:51.800]I have some recommendations that could help to improve the class and you'll
- [00:01:55.370]bring that to like the Student Advisory Board or the teacher herself just to
- [00:01:59.690]help improve not only your experience, but
- [00:02:02.510]every student in the college's experience. And has also helped me kind of grow in
- [00:02:07.820]my confidence in public speaking. For one example,
- [00:02:12.020]and just being able to share my opinion and share my voice.
- [00:02:15.560]Oh, that is fantastic.
- [00:02:16.910]Now I understand that students have an opportunity to be involved and there's
- [00:02:20.390]something going on this semester related to that.
- [00:02:23.660]Yes, their applications are open year-round.
- [00:02:26.870]They will be due on February 22nd for this
- [00:02:30.950]review cycle. And if you want to apply,
- [00:02:33.830]the link will be sent out in those weekly update emails that you get from the
- [00:02:36.890]college. You can also just Google UNL,
- [00:02:40.370]C EH S, S A B, and a webpage will come up. And then on our webpage,
- [00:02:45.320]there is an applications tab that will lead you to the link to the application
- [00:02:49.010]and all the information regarding that.
- [00:02:51.350]Yes, so thank you, Sophie. I think this is really great,
- [00:02:54.470]that really take advantage of the opportunities that are out there,
- [00:02:58.340]be part of the college and the difference you can really make for students
- [00:03:02.670]activities,
- [00:03:03.970]and really being able to talk to the dean and others about how to make the
- [00:03:07.780]student experience better for all of our students in the College of Education
- [00:03:12.490]and Human Sciences. So thank you, Sophie. Kind of in closing,
- [00:03:17.710]both Sophie and I wanted to let you all know that there's also an opportunity
- [00:03:21.850]for each of you to nominate a distinguished educator.
- [00:03:26.410]It's called the Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award.
- [00:03:29.470]So if you were a student who went to high school here in Nebraska,
- [00:03:34.510]we are looking for someone to nominate one of their teachers. And
- [00:03:39.280]if your teacher is awarded
- [00:03:43.120]the distinguished educator award, there will be a luncheon and
- [00:03:47.470]you'll be invited to that luncheon and it's a very, very distinguished award.
- [00:03:52.390]Nominations are due February 14, and if you're interested,
- [00:03:56.740]Please reach out to myself or AnnMarie Gottner, who is
- [00:04:01.990]the Director of Advising. And we can give you more details on how to do that.
- [00:04:06.280]Anything in closing Sophie?
- [00:04:09.040]No, thank you, Paul, for having
- [00:04:10.450]me. All right. Thank you.
