- [00:00:00.380]So this is the Wellness Attendants Training,
- [00:00:03.870]so there will be several quizzes throughout
- [00:00:10.520]and that will be how we continue to take attendance
- [00:00:13.730]and make sure that people are staying engaged.
- [00:00:15.880]So Zoom details for right now,
- [00:00:17.660]keep your audio muted,
- [00:00:20.150]put questions in the chat
- [00:00:21.640]those will go directly to Justi Bullington,
- [00:00:24.830]who is on the line
- [00:00:25.890]and she's providing technical support for the training.
- [00:00:29.330]She is our events coordinator
- [00:00:32.290]in the office of the executive vice chancellor.
- [00:00:35.710]You might be happier if you're using
- [00:00:37.580]speaker mode during this
- [00:00:39.930]and we will be recording the workshop.
- [00:00:43.610]I think the recording has already started.
- [00:00:45.750]So that is so that in particular
- [00:00:48.890]the staff that are helping us out can view it later.
- [00:00:51.890]And we are still in the process of hiring
- [00:00:55.460]Wellness Attendants.
- [00:00:56.330]And so I haven't figured out yet
- [00:00:57.600]if we're gonna offer a training
- [00:00:58.860]or just have them watch the video
- [00:01:01.800]but you guys are gonna get this all done today
- [00:01:04.590]and check it off your list.
- [00:01:06.180]So that's great.
- [00:01:09.350]Let's see.
- [00:01:10.400]So what we're gonna do today,
- [00:01:11.660]we're gonna review the campus safety best practices.
- [00:01:14.680]You should already know all of that.
- [00:01:17.480]We're gonna develop an awareness of the daily duties
- [00:01:19.900]for Wellness Attendants.
- [00:01:21.450]We're gonna talk about demonstrating kindness,
- [00:01:23.780]compassion and patience
- [00:01:25.000]in your role as a Wellness Attendant.
- [00:01:26.510]This is kind of a big responsibility position
- [00:01:31.020]and we wanna make sure you're equipped for it.
- [00:01:34.330]And then we're gonna increase
- [00:01:36.687]your effectiveness in empathy and deflection phrases
- [00:01:39.350]is the last chunk of this training
- [00:01:40.880]is actually gonna be a video
- [00:01:42.740]on Non-escalation and De-escalation techniques
- [00:01:46.240]that you will be able to use
- [00:01:48.070]in your role as a Wellness Attendant.
- [00:01:51.840]As I said, there will be short quizzes
- [00:01:53.810]throughout the training.
- [00:01:54.680]We wanna make sure that you respond to each quiz
- [00:01:57.760]so that we know that you've completed the full training.
- [00:02:02.060]Okay, so just to review,
- [00:02:07.255]the Spring Campus Safety Plan.
- [00:02:08.540]You should already know this.
- [00:02:11.110]Most of this is leftover from the fall safety plan.
- [00:02:16.130]So face coverings and social distancing.
- [00:02:19.160]Everybody is required to wear a face covering
- [00:02:21.650]and practice social distancing
- [00:02:24.200]when inside any university facilities.
- [00:02:27.240]In addition outside it's kind of an either or.
- [00:02:30.340]We ask that you do both
- [00:02:32.310]but certainly if you can't maintain your Herbie Husker
- [00:02:36.130]worth of distance between two people,
- [00:02:39.620]you need to have that face covering on,
- [00:02:41.910]even when outside.
- [00:02:44.230]Personal hygiene, prevention, well-being measures.
- [00:02:47.080]Wash your hands, right?
- [00:02:48.900]Don't touch your face
- [00:02:50.340]and self monitor for symptoms.
- [00:02:53.100]And of course, stay home when you're sick, right?
- [00:02:55.950]Do not infect others.
- [00:02:57.710]Stay home when you are sick.
- [00:03:00.410]What's new for this spring is the re-entry testing.
- [00:03:03.830]And I hope that by now,
- [00:03:05.360]most of you have had that first round of testing.
- [00:03:08.310]If you haven't make sure that you get that today or tomorrow
- [00:03:12.010]you're gonna need to have that
- [00:03:13.230]in order to attend classes
- [00:03:14.590]and be on campus at all
- [00:03:16.496]in the coming week, next week, starting on Monday.
- [00:03:20.670]Your results from that testing should be available
- [00:03:23.530]within the Safer Community App within 24 hours.
- [00:03:28.230]I was tested Tuesday morning at 7:15a.m.
- [00:03:32.725]And I did not actually get my results
- [00:03:36.100]until Wednesday afternoon
- [00:03:38.540]but that was apparently some kind of glitch
- [00:03:41.090]for the first day of testing
- [00:03:42.820]that they have now sorted out
- [00:03:44.960]and they are convinced everybody will get their results
- [00:03:47.610]within 24 hours.
- [00:03:49.590]The app will also let you know
- [00:03:51.160]when your next test result is due.
- [00:03:53.580]So my app, when my test result came through
- [00:03:56.420]and I was negative by the way,
- [00:03:57.910]when my testing result came through,
- [00:03:59.730]it said, "you need to have another test by January 29th."
- [00:04:05.520]And in fact that means have it 24 hours earlier
- [00:04:08.520]so that you have your test results by the 29th.
- [00:04:11.630]So I know now that by Friday of next week
- [00:04:14.610]or on Friday of next week,
- [00:04:16.330]my app is gonna suddenly tell me
- [00:04:18.370]that I am no longer allowed to access campus buildings
- [00:04:22.460]unless I have a new test that I've completed.
- [00:04:25.970]So the app tells you all of this.
- [00:04:28.600]And the idea then is that everybody
- [00:04:32.360]is supposed to be able to show their status card in the app
- [00:04:36.360]or a printed version of the status card
- [00:04:38.970]in order to verify their testing status.
- [00:04:41.850]So that is essentially the spring safety plan.
- [00:04:48.550]I hope that even if you haven't had your test yet,
- [00:04:51.480]you've downloaded the app
- [00:04:53.180]and you have scheduled your test.
- [00:04:55.320]So if you haven't done that
- [00:04:56.650]it's the first thing you need to do right away.
- [00:05:02.750]So the Swiss Cheese Model is often used
- [00:05:09.930]to describe what we are doing
- [00:05:13.260]or what pretty much the whole country
- [00:05:15.240]or the whole world is doing
- [00:05:16.470]with respect to protection from the Corona virus.
- [00:05:20.110]So there's all these different layers, right?
- [00:05:22.980]There's social distancing,
- [00:05:24.280]there's wearing masks,
- [00:05:25.400]there's washing hands,
- [00:05:26.600]there's rapid testing.
- [00:05:28.520]All of those different layers provides...
- [00:05:30.960]Each one of them individually
- [00:05:32.230]provides some perfect protection
- [00:05:34.210]but not a hundred percent protection.
- [00:05:36.920]And so if you think of that as a slice of Swiss cheese
- [00:05:40.190]with some holes in it, right?
- [00:05:42.830]Then you take another slice of Swiss cheese
- [00:05:45.000]and you rotate it, right?
- [00:05:46.980]And that's gonna cover some of those holes.
- [00:05:49.410]And then you take another slice and you rotate it
- [00:05:51.397]and that's gonna cover more of those holes.
- [00:05:53.530]And the thing that I really want to emphasize here is that
- [00:06:00.030]those first three slices of Swiss cheese
- [00:06:02.970]we had last semester, right?
- [00:06:05.890]And we did really well as a campus last semester.
- [00:06:09.180]We did really well.
- [00:06:10.040]There were some people that got sick,
- [00:06:12.160]they recovered.
- [00:06:14.999]Everything is good.
- [00:06:16.170]And for the most part, the campus went on, right?
- [00:06:20.820]We had our classes,
- [00:06:23.170]students earned credits.
- [00:06:25.541]It was a successful semester.
- [00:06:27.450]And that was with those first three slices of Swiss cheese.
- [00:06:31.410]What we're doing for the spring
- [00:06:33.030]is just slapping on an additional slice
- [00:06:36.250]with the re-entry testing and the Wellness of Attendants.
- [00:06:39.870]So it's not...
- [00:06:41.800]The point that I'm trying to make is that
- [00:06:43.416]the safety of the campus,
- [00:06:45.360]you are enhancing the safety of the campus
- [00:06:48.670]but you are not 100% responsible
- [00:06:51.420]for the safety of the campus.
- [00:06:52.810]We still have those other three layers in place
- [00:06:56.380]that were in place last semester
- [00:06:58.770]and very successful last semester.
- [00:07:02.140]So it's a very important piece but it's not the only piece.
- [00:07:06.990]Any questions about that?
- [00:07:11.640]Dr. Walker?
- [00:07:12.950]Yes.
- [00:07:13.783]A question has been submitted.
- [00:07:14.920]Would you like me to read that for you?
- [00:07:16.310]Mm hmm.
- [00:07:17.720]If we've been tested through tests Nebraska
- [00:07:20.080]within the dates,
- [00:07:21.000]can we send that to the university
- [00:07:22.990]to replace that first test?
- [00:07:26.150]So you'll want to email that question...
- [00:07:28.850]So here's my recommendation.
- [00:07:30.809]So I don't know the answer to that question.
- [00:07:34.150]Here's the answer I'm going to give you.
- [00:07:36.210]Go to COVID19.unl.edu.
- [00:07:38.890]There's an FAQ.
- [00:07:40.860]Skim through that FAQ.
- [00:07:42.127]See if you can find the answer to that question.
- [00:07:45.100]If you can't find the answer to that question,
- [00:07:48.070]email the COVID19@unl.edu email address
- [00:07:53.110]and ask the question.
- [00:07:55.260]Dr. Walker?
- [00:07:56.806]Yes.
- [00:07:58.820]The answer to that is no.
- [00:08:00.980]We do need to get that saliva test
- [00:08:02.940]even if you have a negative test from test Nebraska.
- [00:08:07.250]Fantastic. Thank you.
- [00:08:08.083]Can you tell me who that was?
- [00:08:09.460]I can't tell who was just talking.
- [00:08:10.890]Julie.
- [00:08:12.790]Oh, great. Thank you very much.
- [00:08:14.580]You're welcome.
- [00:08:15.860]We did get another question.
- [00:08:18.110]Is it possible to work this job
- [00:08:20.040]and also another COVID job?
- [00:08:22.490]Example, test sample
- [00:08:24.050]courier tester, et cetera.
- [00:08:27.490]That's gonna depend on your...
- [00:08:31.010]Everybody has a maximum number of hours that they can work.
- [00:08:37.090]And as long as the hours work out
- [00:08:40.680]and the scheduling works out
- [00:08:43.280]I don't think that there's any reason
- [00:08:44.870]that you can't have both positions.
- [00:08:49.027](indistinct)
- [00:08:50.960]You definitely can't work more
- [00:08:52.220]than 20 hours a week as a student worker.
- [00:08:54.430]And for some students that cap is even lower
- [00:08:57.630]depending on circumstances.
- [00:09:01.380]Great. One more question.
- [00:09:04.130]Do students who have received both rounds
- [00:09:06.370]of the COVID vaccine
- [00:09:07.630]still need to get tested?
- [00:09:09.820]The answer to that is yes.
- [00:09:12.610]Unfortunately the answer to that one is yes.
- [00:09:15.650]My daughter happens to be in that category
- [00:09:18.400]and is going to be taking a class at UNL this fall.
- [00:09:21.730]She's doing a gap year before really starting college,
- [00:09:26.090]doesn't matter.
- [00:09:27.250]But the answer is yes.
- [00:09:28.880]And the reason is that the CDC is still saying that
- [00:09:34.510]there is not enough evidence
- [00:09:35.830]that you can't still transmit the disease
- [00:09:38.750]after you've had the vaccine.
- [00:09:43.137]They do want you to do that test thing
- [00:09:45.400]and having the vaccine will not affect the outcome
- [00:09:47.910]of the test.
- [00:09:49.910]So no you can't get an exemption
- [00:09:51.670]because you've had the vaccine.
- [00:09:53.640]You can get an exemption if you had the actual disease
- [00:09:59.150]within the past 90 days.
- [00:10:01.490]And there are directions on the COVID-19
- [00:10:04.270]when paged about that.
- [00:10:09.830]Anything else, Justi?
- [00:10:11.400]No more questions in the chat.
- [00:10:13.570]Okay, great. Let's keep going then.
- [00:10:18.950]All right, so the purpose
- [00:10:20.310]of the Wellness Attendants Program
- [00:10:21.820]is to grant access to UNL buildings and classrooms
- [00:10:24.960]to individuals who are current
- [00:10:26.520]on the campus testing requirement,
- [00:10:28.690]are symptom-free
- [00:10:30.220]and are wearing a face covering, right?
- [00:10:33.350]That is your job.
- [00:10:34.730]So you will be not only checking the status card
- [00:10:39.620]and we'll talk more about that later
- [00:10:40.990]but also making sure that people are wearing
- [00:10:43.190]their face coverings.
- [00:10:44.410]And you should have a...
- [00:10:45.847]The building should be providing you
- [00:10:48.150]with disposable masks to hand out if needed.
- [00:10:52.250]If somebody comes without a face covering.
- [00:10:55.370]So who are the Wellness Attendants?
- [00:10:56.880]Wellness Attendants are mainly student workers
- [00:10:59.330]and then staff supervisors.
- [00:11:01.700]They're going to be stationed primarily
- [00:11:05.250]at buildings with high levels of student traffic.
- [00:11:08.820]So they won't be everywhere.
- [00:11:10.420]They won't be all the time.
- [00:11:12.220]Won't be, even if we're covering a certain building
- [00:11:14.530]it won't be all doors in that building.
- [00:11:16.520]And what we're gonna do is have signage
- [00:11:18.750]that's directing people to the door
- [00:11:20.520]where the Wellness Attendant is stationed.
- [00:11:27.810]We are not publicizing exactly which buildings
- [00:11:30.810]or which times, right?
- [00:11:32.370]For obvious reasons.
- [00:11:33.780]But every building...
- [00:11:36.750]One common question that we've been getting
- [00:11:39.010]and we actually just added this to the FAQ.
- [00:11:41.520]We're not locking down the campus.
- [00:11:43.870]You don't have to go through a Wellness Attendant
- [00:11:46.060]to get in.
- [00:11:46.893]If there's an unlocked door, it's fine to go in.
- [00:11:50.110]What we're doing is we're saying,
- [00:11:52.400]we're adding those Wellness Attendants to certain doors
- [00:11:56.680]for added protection in high traffic situations, right?
- [00:12:00.700]So every building has its normal open and close times.
- [00:12:03.940]Those open and close times don't change.
- [00:12:06.400]What changes is just that the door that's potentially
- [00:12:10.910]gonna be staffed by the Wellness Attendants
- [00:12:12.560]is the only door that's unlocked.
- [00:12:16.280]There will also be some people that have key card access
- [00:12:20.300]to the doors that are locked and that's okay.
- [00:12:22.690]We are trusting departments
- [00:12:24.420]to make sure those are primarily faculty and staff.
- [00:12:26.740]And we're testing departments to make sure
- [00:12:28.340]that their faculty and staff
- [00:12:30.110]have the access granted status card, right?
- [00:12:35.250]We are encouraging people to use
- [00:12:36.940]the Wellness Attendants entrance all the time.
- [00:12:39.640]But if you're in and out of the same building every day,
- [00:12:43.430]many times a day because you work there,
- [00:12:45.750]that can be burdensome.
- [00:12:47.640]And so they will still have their key card access.
- [00:12:50.310]So what Wellness Attendants will do
- [00:12:52.800]is they'll check the status card
- [00:12:54.410]on the Safer Community App
- [00:12:56.500]for that access granted verbiage.
- [00:13:00.530]You will not, as Wellness Attendants
- [00:13:02.670]have access to private health data.
- [00:13:04.970]So if somebody says, why is my access not granted?
- [00:13:09.960]You say, you don't know, 'cause you don't know.
- [00:13:12.290]All you know is that the app is telling you
- [00:13:15.380]that access is not granted.
- [00:13:16.950]So it might've been a negative test.
- [00:13:19.350]I mean, a positive test.
- [00:13:20.790]It might have been forgetting to get tested
- [00:13:23.910]or neglecting to get tested.
- [00:13:25.600]It might be somehow identified as a close contact
- [00:13:30.330]and you're supposed to be in quarantine, right?
- [00:13:33.120]Any of those things could be encoded
- [00:13:35.140]in the status card of the Safer Community app.
- [00:13:40.380]All right, so common questions.
- [00:13:42.440]Is it just for students?
- [00:13:43.660]No.
- [00:13:44.493]Anybody going into a building
- [00:13:45.990]is expected to have that access granted status card.
- [00:13:50.980]What happens if a situation escalates?
- [00:13:53.910]So you're working as a Wellness Attendant
- [00:13:56.640]and somebody shows up and says,
- [00:13:59.157]"I don't believe in this testing thing.
- [00:14:01.070]I'm not gonna do it.
- [00:14:02.030]And you're gonna let me in the building anyway."
- [00:14:04.860]Well, we're gonna give you some techniques
- [00:14:07.120]to deal with that later in the presentation
- [00:14:11.750]but you will also have phone numbers that you can call.
- [00:14:15.100]So Julie is on the call right now.
- [00:14:19.520]So Julie Cook...
- [00:14:22.054]Justi, is it possible to spotlight her or something
- [00:14:24.300]so that everybody can see her?
- [00:14:26.130]And Julie, can you wave?
- [00:14:30.750]All right, so Julie is our full-time
- [00:14:32.870]Wellness Attendant Supervisor.
- [00:14:34.440]So you will have a phone number where you can reach her.
- [00:14:38.290]You will also have a phone number
- [00:14:40.370]that is local to the building that you are stationed in
- [00:14:43.560]and who answers that phone might change from day to day
- [00:14:47.450]but somebody will answer that phone
- [00:14:49.630]and that person can come down
- [00:14:51.960]and provide backup for you if needed.
- [00:14:55.383]All right.
- [00:14:56.340]Are Wellness Attendants part of the UNL Police Department?
- [00:14:59.070]The answer is no.
- [00:15:00.750]They are however considered campus security authorities.
- [00:15:05.140]And a little bit later in the program in the training,
- [00:15:08.530]we're gonna have Michael Maas,
- [00:15:10.700]who coordinates the campus security authorities program
- [00:15:14.110]for the police department.
- [00:15:15.740]He's going to do official campus
- [00:15:17.870]security authority training for you
- [00:15:20.250]as part of today's training.
- [00:15:21.760]So Michael, do you wanna wave for a second
- [00:15:23.740]and Justi can you spotlight Michael for a minute?
- [00:15:30.880]Thank you.
- [00:15:32.254]Hello.
- [00:15:33.930]Thanks Michael.
- [00:15:35.164]And then you can unspotlight him.
- [00:15:36.310]I think we had Julie spotlighted that whole time.
- [00:15:40.412](coughs) Excuse me.
- [00:15:42.680]All right.
- [00:15:43.690]So your options for building entry.
- [00:15:47.700]So you might have or an individual might have
- [00:15:52.010]the Safer Community App.
- [00:15:54.020]They might have a printed version of the status card
- [00:15:58.200]but vendors and visitors are not part
- [00:16:01.300]of our campus testing policy
- [00:16:03.050]or our campus testing program.
- [00:16:05.530]So the Pepsi guy that's coming
- [00:16:07.980]to reload the vending machines,
- [00:16:10.440]the UPS person that is delivering packages on campus.
- [00:16:16.590]Police.
- [00:16:17.660]Well, UNLPD should be tested
- [00:16:19.700]but if Lincoln police had needed to come for some reason
- [00:16:22.330]they're not gonna have a status card.
- [00:16:25.010]Anybody in a uniform you can just wave through.
- [00:16:29.500]And the rationale there is twofold.
- [00:16:31.410]One is that all this testing stuff and the status cards
- [00:16:38.120]that's new this semester,
- [00:16:39.390]we got through last semester.
- [00:16:41.080]It's okay.
- [00:16:43.500]If a few people slip through,
- [00:16:45.230]we need to make sure that our campus community is compliant.
- [00:16:48.540]But our vendors that's okay.
- [00:16:50.150]And secondly, those vendors aren't having sustained contact
- [00:16:53.550]with our faculty, staff and students.
- [00:16:55.480]They're there for a very brief period of time.
- [00:16:57.280]And they're really not interacting very much
- [00:16:59.480]with our faculty, staff and students.
- [00:17:00.667]And so it's okay.
- [00:17:02.630]So if they're in a uniform so that, you know
- [00:17:05.030]the brown UPS uniform,
- [00:17:07.720]the Pepsi shirt, right?
- [00:17:09.230]That blue and white stripe that we all know.
- [00:17:13.100]That is okay.
- [00:17:14.650]Wave them through.
- [00:17:16.250]And then visitors.
- [00:17:17.540]So this would be like a guest speaker for a course
- [00:17:20.650]or something along those lines,
- [00:17:23.750]those people are also not part of our testing program.
- [00:17:26.410]They need to be accompanied
- [00:17:28.400]by a UNL faculty or staff person.
- [00:17:31.300]And that host needs to show their status card.
- [00:17:36.370]And they're basically taking responsibility for the visitor.
- [00:17:39.790]The vendors and the visitors
- [00:17:41.920]and the members of the UNL community,
- [00:17:43.800]everybody, everybody has to wear a face covering.
- [00:17:48.770]Everybody has to observe the social distancing guidelines
- [00:17:53.890]but only the members of the UNL community
- [00:17:56.440]need to show their status cards.
- [00:18:00.310]All right. So let's take a little quiz.
- [00:18:03.240]So Justi, you wanna put up the first quiz?
- [00:18:08.940]So what should you do if a UPS delivery person
- [00:18:11.500]in uniform approaches the door as you are staffing
- [00:18:15.300]as a Wellness Attendant?
- [00:18:39.794]Okay. Very good.
- [00:18:40.655]Justi you wanna go ahead and show the results
- [00:18:42.230]of that poll?
- [00:18:44.320]So most of you said, wave them through.
- [00:18:46.390]One person said they need to be escorted by a UNL employee.
- [00:18:50.650]If that UPS person is in uniform,
- [00:18:53.780]you can wave them through.
- [00:18:55.640]However, I just realized this question is not
- [00:18:58.620]or the answer is not quite complete.
- [00:19:00.470]It's wave them through if...
- [00:19:02.790]Somebody unmute and finish that sentence.
- [00:19:05.340]Wave them through if?
- [00:19:09.360]They're wearing a mask.
- [00:19:10.660]Very good.
- [00:19:11.930]Yeah, they have to be wearing that face covering.
- [00:19:14.120]Good job.
- [00:19:15.260]Was that Emma?
- [00:19:16.270]Thank you.
- [00:19:17.250]Good job.
- [00:19:18.688]All right.
- [00:19:23.920]So let's move on.
- [00:19:27.330]There are a couple of questions.
- [00:19:28.610]Do you wanna address those now?
- [00:19:30.760](mumbles) Address questions. Thanks, Justi.
- [00:19:34.210]Where can we tell them that they can find answers
- [00:19:37.070]since we can't provide answers ourselves?
- [00:19:40.010]I think them, as in people checking in.
- [00:19:42.730]Yep, so a few slides from now
- [00:19:45.670]I'm gonna show you a...
- [00:19:48.870]There will be like quarter sheets of paper
- [00:19:51.600]that your building people will provide to you
- [00:19:54.220]as a Wellness Attendant.
- [00:19:56.460]They have a QR code that leads to the COVID-19 website
- [00:20:01.700]and they have the COVID-19 email address.
- [00:20:06.058]And what you'll do...
- [00:20:06.891]And we'll get there in a second.
- [00:20:08.350]What you'll do is you'll hand them this card
- [00:20:10.240]and you'll say, I'm sorry, your app says access denied
- [00:20:14.710]or you if can't show me a boarding pass, a status card,
- [00:20:18.440]I can't let you in the building.
- [00:20:20.180]Here's information for you.
- [00:20:22.080]Here's what you should do next.
- [00:20:25.890]Great. Question two.
- [00:20:27.790]In the email from the chancellor on New Year's
- [00:20:29.970]it says in bold,
- [00:20:31.050]that students who will be on campus
- [00:20:32.860]will be required to be tested twice
- [00:20:34.920]as the semester commences.
- [00:20:36.810]If the apps says a person needs
- [00:20:38.310]to be retested every 10 days,
- [00:20:40.410]does this mean that the person
- [00:20:41.600]will need to be tested more than twice?
- [00:20:45.960]So what the email from the chancellor says
- [00:20:50.010]is that there's going to be re-entry testing
- [00:20:53.730]as the semester starts.
- [00:20:55.600]So you'll get tested twice as the semester starts.
- [00:20:59.290]But the email from the chancellor
- [00:21:01.470]doesn't actually say what happens after that
- [00:21:03.477]and the reason it doesn't say what happens after that
- [00:21:06.410]is that, working with the health department
- [00:21:09.210]we are going to look at the results of the re-entry testing
- [00:21:14.590]and use that to determine what regular testing
- [00:21:17.950]we need moving forward throughout the semester.
- [00:21:21.070]So if we find that nobody's got COVID
- [00:21:24.480]and we need to just move on
- [00:21:28.600]then we won't have testing requirements
- [00:21:30.610]at least for a while.
- [00:21:32.040]If we find that a very large percentage
- [00:21:34.310]of our student population
- [00:21:35.640]or our students, staff and faculty population
- [00:21:38.180]is testing positive
- [00:21:40.240]and we need to have frequent testing,
- [00:21:42.240]it could be more frequent than every 10 days, right?
- [00:21:45.870]It could be targeted for certain high risk populations.
- [00:21:49.260]Maybe you'll need to be tested every 10 days
- [00:21:52.040]and your friend won't need to be tested for 15 days.
- [00:21:55.640]Or maybe you'll need to be tested every three days.
- [00:21:57.950]Illinois was doing every two days
- [00:22:00.140]or three times a week or something in the fall semester.
- [00:22:04.840]I'm not sure what they're doing now.
- [00:22:06.480]So it's really gonna depend on current conditions.
- [00:22:10.470]And so that's why that was vague
- [00:22:12.800]in the chancellor's message
- [00:22:14.040]is that we're waiting to see what the results
- [00:22:15.970]of the reentry testing are.
- [00:22:18.062]That the way that the re-entry testing is working now,
- [00:22:21.134]it's you get tested once this week
- [00:22:25.090]and then you're gonna get tested again 10 days later.
- [00:22:32.470]There was a follow-up to that
- [00:22:34.220]but I think you just answered it and it says,
- [00:22:36.350]so students need to have two negative tests
- [00:22:38.180]before they can enter buildings
- [00:22:39.460]to go to the class the first week.
- [00:22:41.840]That's not true.
- [00:22:43.640]So you need to have an access granted status card.
- [00:22:49.310]You're only gonna have time for one test
- [00:22:51.640]before classes start.
- [00:22:53.030]And that's gonna give you an access granted status card
- [00:22:55.900]that one test being negative, right?
- [00:22:59.490]Then it's gonna tell you, you need another test.
- [00:23:02.600]And as long as you get that second test
- [00:23:04.480]that's gonna keep your status card being access granted
- [00:23:08.010]until you might need a third test.
- [00:23:11.970]Okay, final question for this round.
- [00:23:14.410]Is there any regulation in terms
- [00:23:16.510]of what kind of face covering is allowed?
- [00:23:19.780]Yes and that is on the COVID 19 webpage.
- [00:23:25.210]Basically it has to cover the nose and mouth.
- [00:23:29.990]It has to meet CDC guidelines.
- [00:23:33.590]There was a long discussion about net gaiters
- [00:23:35.730]and whether they were acceptable.
- [00:23:37.470]And I think that what the end result
- [00:23:40.060]of that was that they are not
- [00:23:41.510]that I don't remember for sure.
- [00:23:43.440]But it's very clear the face covering policy is very clear
- [00:23:46.350]about what is and is not acceptable.
- [00:23:50.110]That is on the COVID-19 webpage.
- [00:23:56.210]Is that it, Justi for now?
- [00:23:58.800]Yep. That's it.
- [00:24:00.070]Excellent.
- [00:24:00.903]Okay, let us move on then.
- [00:24:03.670]So the Safer Community App was built
- [00:24:05.970]at the University of Illinois.
- [00:24:07.180]It was called the Safer at Illinois App there.
- [00:24:09.280]We bought it from Illinois
- [00:24:11.820]and it was developed very carefully
- [00:24:15.030]with this privacy first attitude.
- [00:24:20.237]So in particular,
- [00:24:23.020]it is not going to expose anybody's personal medical data.
- [00:24:27.410]It's not gonna expose anybody's NUID number even.
- [00:24:30.470]It's not gonna expose anybody's private information.
- [00:24:33.950]All it does is shows access granted or access denied.
- [00:24:39.740]There is a way on that app
- [00:24:41.680]that you can enable notification and symptom tracking.
- [00:24:45.310]You have to opt into those.
- [00:24:48.250]It's not going to track or trace anyone directly.
- [00:24:52.630]So even if you enable the exposure notification,
- [00:24:56.740]it's not saying this person was near this person
- [00:25:00.910]it's all anonymized and up in the cloud.
- [00:25:02.850]And I don't know all the details
- [00:25:04.350]but all the details are on the University of Illinois
- [00:25:06.530]COVID website.
- [00:25:07.780]And if you want to...
- [00:25:09.040]If you're worried about that, you can look there.
- [00:25:12.520]But I looked enough to decide that I wasn't worried about it
- [00:25:16.800]but I also trust the University of Illinois
- [00:25:17.873]because that's where I got my PhD.
- [00:25:19.560]So there you go.
- [00:25:22.310]Okay, let's move on.
- [00:25:24.910]Okay, so checking the status card.
- [00:25:26.710]So I hope you already have the app.
- [00:25:28.790]If you open up your app and look at your status card
- [00:25:32.470]it's gonna look a little bit different
- [00:25:34.480]from this status card.
- [00:25:35.750]So those of you who do have smartphones
- [00:25:38.010]and do have that app already,
- [00:25:39.790]go ahead and open up your app and look at the status card.
- [00:25:45.300]Okay and I'm gonna do the same thing actually.
- [00:25:53.260]Okay, so somebody unmute
- [00:25:57.790]and tell me about the color of the day.
- [00:26:00.460]So that the color of the day actually changes every day
- [00:26:04.380]and the color of the day
- [00:26:07.030]when we got Taylor's status card here was blue
- [00:26:11.360]but what's today's color of the day?
- [00:26:13.110]Somebody unmute and tell me today's color of the day.
- [00:26:15.785]Purple.
- [00:26:16.640]Yeah, it's purple.
- [00:26:18.250]So that changes every day.
- [00:26:19.490]I think it was actually blue yesterday.
- [00:26:21.530]It was red on Tuesday.
- [00:26:24.710]The circle around Taylor's picture there.
- [00:26:29.640]This is just a screenshot.
- [00:26:31.010]So you can't see it
- [00:26:31.850]but that circle should actually be spinning on your app.
- [00:26:38.980]Taylor has access granted.
- [00:26:40.970]So she has a check mark
- [00:26:42.190]and it says building access granted.
- [00:26:45.170]You may not have your test results yet
- [00:26:47.590]and so you might have an X
- [00:26:49.770]and it might say building access denied.
- [00:26:54.160]Okay.
- [00:26:56.290]And then Taylor's picture is here
- [00:26:59.080]because we faked it to make this picture.
- [00:27:02.120]Your picture is probably not there.
- [00:27:04.220]My picture is not on my app.
- [00:27:06.320]That is a feature that we are still working to activate.
- [00:27:10.590]We expect pictures to be there eventually
- [00:27:12.720]but for right now, they're not.
- [00:27:14.620]As a Wellness Attendant,
- [00:27:16.000]what you're gonna do,
- [00:27:18.690]just check the status card
- [00:27:19.523]you're gonna check the color of the day.
- [00:27:20.770]You're only gonna know what color of the day
- [00:27:22.960]it's supposed to be by opening your own app
- [00:27:26.210]anytime after five in the morning, okay?
- [00:27:29.680]So you're gonna see the color of the day.
- [00:27:32.970]You're gonna make sure that the circle spins.
- [00:27:34.930]The circle spinning is really your guarantee
- [00:27:37.560]that they're not just showing you a screenshot, right?
- [00:27:40.617]You wanna actually see their current status card.
- [00:27:45.067]And so that circle is gonna be spinning.
- [00:27:47.680]You're gonna be looking for the check mark
- [00:27:49.080]and the access granted.
- [00:27:50.740]And then assuming we have the photos in place
- [00:27:53.590]where you're gonna be checking that the photo
- [00:27:55.360]matches the person.
- [00:27:56.900]Honestly, the only way to get around the photo thing
- [00:28:01.650]like to use somebody else's
- [00:28:03.520]because we don't have photos,
- [00:28:04.720]is to really have somebody else's phone
- [00:28:07.330]which I don't think is really gonna be an issue.
- [00:28:10.850]And the other thing is that when you're checking the photo,
- [00:28:14.220]remember the person that you're looking at
- [00:28:15.500]is gonna be wearing a face covering.
- [00:28:17.340]So you can only see their eyes anyway.
- [00:28:18.970]So it's not a lot.
- [00:28:20.570]It's really not a lot of added information
- [00:28:22.450]that we're missing right now with photos being missing
- [00:28:25.430]but we are working on getting those photos incorporated.
- [00:28:28.550]And it'll just pull photos from NUIDs.
- [00:28:32.290]It'll be your...
- [00:28:33.320]Whatever is on your NUID will show there.
- [00:28:35.480]So again, you're gonna check all these things.
- [00:28:38.400]Assuming you see that access granted,
- [00:28:40.480]assuming you see the right color
- [00:28:41.920]and the circle is spinning,
- [00:28:43.870]you're going to make sure that they're wearing
- [00:28:45.940]a face covering.
- [00:28:47.180]You're gonna offer a disposable covering
- [00:28:48.850]if they're not wearing a face covering.
- [00:28:50.540]I actually don't expect that to happen very often.
- [00:28:52.740]I think people are pretty well accustomed
- [00:28:55.810]to wearing a face covering right now
- [00:28:58.140]but you're gonna offer the foot disposable
- [00:28:59.667]and face covering if needed.
- [00:29:02.850]Justi, were there any questions on that slide?
- [00:29:05.570]Oh, you're good to move forward.
- [00:29:08.580]Great. Then we have another quiz.
- [00:29:14.110]So how can you be sure someone is showing you
- [00:29:17.660]their actual status card and not a screenshot of one?
- [00:30:04.410]Okay, Justi you wanna show the results?
- [00:30:07.900]So most of you said, do all of it.
- [00:30:10.670]The photo is actually not gonna show up
- [00:30:12.470]but the correct answer in some sense is do all of it.
- [00:30:16.400]But the things that really tell you
- [00:30:18.400]that you're seeing the actual status card
- [00:30:20.150]is really just A and B, right?
- [00:30:22.160]That it's not a photo.
- [00:30:23.100]It's A and B.
- [00:30:24.850]I imagine the correct answer is A through D
- [00:30:27.530]but maybe the question wasn't good.
- [00:30:29.260]It doesn't matter.
- [00:30:31.140]You're not being graded.
- [00:30:32.180]We're just making sure you're paying attention.
- [00:30:34.560]All right. Let's move on.
- [00:30:36.620]Very good.
- [00:30:41.880]All right, so people that do not have a smartphone
- [00:30:45.880]will have to rely on a printed status card.
- [00:30:48.940]That printed status card they will need to print every day.
- [00:30:53.937]You are going to check the color of the day.
- [00:30:56.200]If it's printed in color,
- [00:30:57.880]that color of the day will be the same
- [00:30:59.290]as what's on your app.
- [00:31:00.570]If it's not printed in color,
- [00:31:02.660]you're gonna still be able to see the date and time
- [00:31:04.670]that that status card was printed.
- [00:31:07.430]You're still gonna look for the check mark
- [00:31:09.450]and the access granted.
- [00:31:11.370]Assuming we get the photos incorporated,
- [00:31:13.660]you're gonna check with the photo
- [00:31:14.930]that matches the individual
- [00:31:16.940]and then you're gonna encourage them
- [00:31:18.990]to get the Safer Community App.
- [00:31:20.580]There are very few people on campus
- [00:31:22.810]that don't have smartphones.
- [00:31:24.530]There are a few but very few.
- [00:31:28.640]And so everybody that has a smartphone,
- [00:31:31.230]it's just really much easier to use
- [00:31:33.720]the Safer Community App
- [00:31:35.173]than to rely on the printed status card.
- [00:31:38.210]Again, you're gonna verify
- [00:31:39.810]that they're wearing a face covering.
- [00:31:41.010]You're gonna offer a disposable face covering if needed.
- [00:31:46.570]Okay, here is that card that I was talking about
- [00:31:50.010]a little bit ago.
- [00:31:51.730]So if it says building access denied
- [00:31:54.860]then you're gonna tell them
- [00:31:56.250]that they are unable to enter the building, right?
- [00:31:59.520]I'm sorry, you're not able to enter.
- [00:32:01.930]Your status card says access denied.
- [00:32:04.960]Hand them this information sheet.
- [00:32:06.830]That information sheet should be made available to you
- [00:32:09.600]when you get to work each day.
- [00:32:12.650]It might mean that they're not up to date on their testing.
- [00:32:14.720]It might mean that the test came back positive
- [00:32:16.930]or they had close exposure
- [00:32:18.340]to someone who came back positive.
- [00:32:20.550]They can email the COVID-19 web email address
- [00:32:24.130]with questions
- [00:32:25.460]and you can emphasize to them that you don't have access
- [00:32:29.130]to any private health information.
- [00:32:31.250]You only have information about
- [00:32:32.930]whether to grant access or not.
- [00:32:38.610]All right, so one more time.
- [00:32:40.110]Here is Herbie Huskers App.
- [00:32:42.990]Color of the day was blue.
- [00:32:44.810]That circle should be spinning
- [00:32:46.780]which I guess you can kind of see
- [00:32:48.030]because it's different in the two pictures.
- [00:32:50.790]On the left, Herbie's access is denied,
- [00:32:53.810]on the right, his access is granted.
- [00:32:58.880]Okay. Alrighty.
- [00:33:02.210]So I'm gonna turn it over now to Michael Maas
- [00:33:05.340]who is the compliance and accreditation officer with UNLPD.
- [00:33:09.200]And he's gonna talk to you about the Clery Act
- [00:33:11.350]and what it means to be a campus security authority.
- [00:33:14.690]Yes, as Wellness Attendants,
- [00:33:16.800]you are also considered campus security authorities
- [00:33:19.540]because of the role you're serving.
- [00:33:21.550]So I'm just gonna go kind of over what the Clery Act is
- [00:33:24.970]and your responsibilities for that.
- [00:33:30.130]Just some background,
- [00:33:31.670]the Clery Act, it was named after Jeanne Clery,
- [00:33:35.220]who was a student at Lehigh University,
- [00:33:37.390]who, she was raped and murdered in her dorm room, 1986.
- [00:33:41.990]At the time, there was nothing that required institutions
- [00:33:45.670]of higher education to inform the student body or the public
- [00:33:49.930]of what was happening on their campus, crime wise.
- [00:33:52.700]And so they didn't know that there'd been 38 violent crimes
- [00:33:55.970]on that campus in a previous three-year period.
- [00:33:58.930]And I mean, ironically, her two brothers went
- [00:34:01.350]to Tulane University in New Orleans
- [00:34:03.680]and she went here because she thought it would be safe.
- [00:34:07.640]And so after this happened,
- [00:34:08.970]her parents spearheaded the effort
- [00:34:10.910]to get basically a federal law enacted
- [00:34:13.710]that required institutions to provide crime statistics
- [00:34:18.530]and information on a timely basis.
- [00:34:20.870]So everybody knew what was going on.
- [00:34:24.975]The Clery Act is overseen by department education
- [00:34:28.140]and among other things
- [00:34:30.888]the Campus Security Authorities have to be identified.
- [00:34:33.855]We have to publicize our crime stats
- [00:34:36.170]through our annual security report that we put out.
- [00:34:38.690]And also they go on a part vacation website
- [00:34:42.350]that allows people to actually compare stats
- [00:34:45.320]for just different institutions just right on this website.
- [00:34:49.340]We often provide policy statements regarding our safety,
- [00:34:53.450]safety programs and crime reporting,
- [00:34:55.810]what to do if you're a victim of a crime,
- [00:34:58.220]educational programs related to safety security
- [00:35:01.340]and then our drugs and alcohol programs
- [00:35:04.340]that the university provides the resources.
- [00:35:06.240]It provides resources that it provides
- [00:35:09.200]for victims of crimes, sexual misconduct.
- [00:35:15.160]And then you also have to provide information
- [00:35:17.870]on something that presents an immediate
- [00:35:19.850]or continuing threat to the campus community.
- [00:35:22.940]And so that's why it's important
- [00:35:24.530]that we get crime reports from anybody.
- [00:35:28.340]There's many people as possible.
- [00:35:29.450]So that can be done.
- [00:35:34.060]Compliance really requires everybody working together
- [00:35:36.680]which basically is, you know, we forward information
- [00:35:40.760]and don't keep it to yourself
- [00:35:42.350]because that's how it gets publicized
- [00:35:45.090]and put out like it should
- [00:35:46.160]because it's provided.
- [00:35:47.790]Mingle basically is to provide campus community
- [00:35:50.460]with prominent crime information
- [00:35:53.420]that allows individuals to look out for themselves.
- [00:35:57.100]You know, if you're not aware you can't take precautions.
- [00:36:01.080]When everybody knows what's going on
- [00:36:02.570]they can look out for themselves.
- [00:36:05.570]Crimes that occur within a canvas geography,
- [00:36:08.220]how to report it to the UNL Police Department
- [00:36:11.360]for safety analysis and statistical maintenance
- [00:36:15.500]not necessarily sort investigation.
- [00:36:17.540]I'll get to that in a little bit deeper.
- [00:36:20.270]We include the statistics like I said
- [00:36:21.690]in the annual campus security fire safety report
- [00:36:24.620]uploaded to the website.
- [00:36:26.739]There's actually, you can go on the bottom bar
- [00:36:29.540]on any UNL webpage that annual security report's down there.
- [00:36:34.540]So if you ever get really bored or you need to fall asleep
- [00:36:37.090]you can click on that and try read it and put you to sleep.
- [00:36:40.300]But it does have a lot of good information.
- [00:36:42.940]Like I said, it's ideas have one stop shop
- [00:36:45.810]for all the safety and security information
- [00:36:48.630]and program information.
- [00:36:51.300]And whenever statistics or whenever a report is made
- [00:36:55.550]like a timely warning put out whatever
- [00:36:57.580]no names or criminal investigation
- [00:36:59.480]is ever going to go in statistics.
- [00:37:02.720]Any reports that I maintain or anytime in the mornings,
- [00:37:07.478]the Clery Act is basically wanting to know
- [00:37:10.170]what happened and where not necessarily who it occurred to.
- [00:37:13.840]So it's a little different in Title IX in that regard.
- [00:37:18.210]But as you're Wellness Attendants,
- [00:37:20.520]you meet the criteria for the Clery Act
- [00:37:22.580]for campus security authority.
- [00:37:25.420]General four categories
- [00:37:26.980]obviously university police department
- [00:37:29.330]or whoever has the police or security,
- [00:37:34.430]persons responsible for security
- [00:37:36.540]which are non police roles which is where you would come in
- [00:37:39.700]'cause technically it's kind of a security type role.
- [00:37:43.640]Institutional individuals or officers
- [00:37:46.120]to which you would assume crimes will be reported
- [00:37:47.720]like Title IX to the students human resources.
- [00:37:51.400]And then officials student with significant responsibility
- [00:37:54.580]for students campus activities,
- [00:37:56.620]which are RSO advisors, student advisors.
- [00:38:01.000]And it's those people that have secondary relationship
- [00:38:03.580]with students just outside the classroom
- [00:38:05.210]or on a more personal level.
- [00:38:08.290]So CSA is mandated duty to report crimes they witness
- [00:38:14.220]or report to them virtually their official position.
- [00:38:18.541]And for that report, I'll be into for the report.
- [00:38:22.430]This is just obviously, if you're in your position
- [00:38:24.850]at at a door,
- [00:38:26.350]if you hear this when you're on your own time
- [00:38:29.450]you're not under any obligation to report it.
- [00:38:32.210]Now you're welcome to
- [00:38:33.460]but if the only time is if you're you're manning a door
- [00:38:36.430]or you're in your official capacity
- [00:38:38.220]and you witness what you think is a crime
- [00:38:39.980]or somebody tells you, Hey, this just happened to me
- [00:38:42.540]then you're mandated to forward that.
- [00:38:45.840]The idea is to include non law enforcement employees
- [00:38:48.700]as CSA's in the spirit of the act
- [00:38:51.280]is because some canvas community members
- [00:38:53.430]might feel better about reporting to non-police.
- [00:38:57.600]'Cause some people obviously
- [00:39:00.490]don't think that the police are gonna help them
- [00:39:02.490]or they have had bad experiences whatever
- [00:39:04.860]or they don't want criminal charges, et cetera.
- [00:39:07.270]There's a lot of different reasons.
- [00:39:09.140]But when it comes to someone
- [00:39:10.110]and they have more personal relationship with
- [00:39:14.380]they might feel comfortable.
- [00:39:15.450]So, I mean, I don't think that's probably gonna be you
- [00:39:17.670]unless it's a friend of yours
- [00:39:18.790]but there's a broad range of positions
- [00:39:21.470]are included as CSA's in general.
- [00:39:24.700]So we can get an accurate picture
- [00:39:27.460]of crime on campus as possible.
- [00:39:30.200]We have, excluding you,
- [00:39:31.860]we have about, we got close to 1500 people identify
- [00:39:35.130]as campus security authorities on campus.
- [00:39:39.510]And CSA is defined by their function and not their title.
- [00:39:44.693]So just because someone's a director
- [00:39:47.120]doesn't mean that what they're director of really impacts
- [00:39:51.130]students that as much as others.
- [00:39:53.050]So that's why it's function and not title.
- [00:39:59.010]What must you do?
- [00:40:00.920]It's really not that big a deal.
- [00:40:04.030]Basically it's just do your job.
- [00:40:05.890]And if someone does happen to report something to you,
- [00:40:09.340]you just kind of a resource for them.
- [00:40:12.340]But honestly, I doubt any of you are ever going to see
- [00:40:15.100]a crime committed or anybody's gonna report anything to you
- [00:40:19.450]but we still have to train you
- [00:40:21.190]and let you know that you are a CSA in case it does happen.
- [00:40:25.180]But if you see a report,
- [00:40:26.670]just basically get as much information
- [00:40:28.700]as the person will tell you.
- [00:40:29.680]I mean, you don't have to dig
- [00:40:30.700]but just listen to what they have to say
- [00:40:33.497]and then forward it basically
- [00:40:35.440]by you want to report directly to UNLPD.
- [00:40:39.410]So call UNLPD.
- [00:40:41.520]Or you also can complete,
- [00:40:43.500]there's an electronic form on the UNLPD website
- [00:40:47.330]that you can fill out.
- [00:40:49.420]I mean, if a victim doesn't want police at all.
- [00:40:54.030]I wouldn't really...
- [00:40:55.250]I don't think that'd be an issue anyway
- [00:40:57.720]but like I said, you can just tell them
- [00:40:58.803]that you're forwarding this
- [00:41:00.070]because just the crime report and not names
- [00:41:03.460]because you have to.
- [00:41:05.506]But you don't have to prove what happened,
- [00:41:08.160]who's at fault, determine who did it
- [00:41:10.280]or convince the reporting party to report to police.
- [00:41:13.330]Just get the facts and forward it on.
- [00:41:16.760]Minimum what happened and when and where did it occur.
- [00:41:21.640]So it's not that you have to really worry about too much,
- [00:41:25.410]just get the information and that's it.
- [00:41:30.840]And only real crimes that reported to you,
- [00:41:32.900]like I said in your official capacity, mostly forward it.
- [00:41:34.950]I mean, if you overhear something
- [00:41:36.420]even when you're on duty,
- [00:41:37.480]if you hear two students talking,
- [00:41:39.280]something happened to one of them,
- [00:41:40.340]you're not obligated to report that.
- [00:41:43.040]It's just somebody that comes directly to you
- [00:41:45.120]and report something.
- [00:41:48.122](mumbles) officer to the UNLPD
- [00:41:51.550]or through the form immediately
- [00:41:52.950]by notification of the crime.
- [00:41:55.894]And like I said, (indistinct)
- [00:41:57.142]that's was probably just in all cases,
- [00:41:58.590]unless for some reason it's clear
- [00:42:00.870]they don't want police involved,
- [00:42:02.260]just call the UNLPD and say,
- [00:42:03.840]hey, this is important.
- [00:42:05.100]Especially, I mean obviously, if you witnessed something
- [00:42:07.240]call the UNLPD right away.
- [00:42:10.460]But if you are aware of something
- [00:42:11.700]don't assume someone else knows that it happened
- [00:42:13.860]and was reported,
- [00:42:15.500]report it yourself.
- [00:42:16.880]Double reporting is not an issue.
- [00:42:19.830]We don't have a lot of luckily a lot of crimes.
- [00:42:22.300]So if there's five reports that are all similar
- [00:42:25.440]it's gonna be clear that there was all the same thing.
- [00:42:28.310]So it'll only be counted as one incident
- [00:42:31.040]in our clarity statistics.
- [00:42:35.150]But just kind of an overview
- [00:42:36.330]and don't get caught up in this stuff
- [00:42:38.250]because like I said, I just want you to say what happened
- [00:42:41.490]and where and I'll determine it
- [00:42:42.630]'cause it's hard enough for me sometimes to classify
- [00:42:45.910]but the Clery Act crimes that are reportable
- [00:42:48.890]are criminal homicide,
- [00:42:51.120]sex offenses which are rape, forcible fondling, incest
- [00:42:56.190]and statutory rape,
- [00:42:58.190]aggravated assault, robbery, burglary
- [00:43:00.810]motor vehicle theft, arson
- [00:43:03.000]the violent offenses,
- [00:43:03.990]which are domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.
- [00:43:07.550]Like I said, don't worry about classifying it.
- [00:43:09.830]Just, this is more informational
- [00:43:11.860]than something you have to know.
- [00:43:14.820]It's also the hate crimes.
- [00:43:16.490]Something motivated that appears to be motivated
- [00:43:18.800]by hate or bias are included in our statistics.
- [00:43:22.660]Hate crime can include any of the previous crimes
- [00:43:26.170]or also larceny theft, simple assault,
- [00:43:28.860]intimidation, destruction, vandalism of property.
- [00:43:31.990]And then when we do report it
- [00:43:34.420]we have to report the type of bias
- [00:43:37.160]which is either the actual or perceived,
- [00:43:40.290]race, religion, gender, gender identity,
- [00:43:42.450]sexual orientation, ethnicity,
- [00:43:44.740]national origin and disability.
- [00:43:47.840]So like I said,
- [00:43:48.673]anything that appears to be motivated by hate or bias
- [00:43:51.860]we report as a hate crime in our statistics.
- [00:43:56.350]Do you think they're supporting individuals?
- [00:43:58.190]The student report, just obviously let the individual
- [00:44:00.850]know you're there and you can help them.
- [00:44:03.130]And if they ask, say you'll help them seeking services
- [00:44:07.780]or reporting the incident to authorities
- [00:44:10.180]which is someone within UNL itself
- [00:44:13.650]or to the UNLPD, if that's what they want.
- [00:44:17.570]I actually I can't imagine anybody
- [00:44:19.050]who's gonna want do that
- [00:44:20.900]but inform him or her that there was resources available,
- [00:44:25.020]which include (mumbles) or victim advocates on campus
- [00:44:31.510]Title IX coordinator, student conduct, human resources.
- [00:44:36.100]Looking at hospitals, counseling services,
- [00:44:38.140]such as CAP's, EAP.
- [00:44:40.890]So that's kind of what we've got around there
- [00:44:44.040]and that you can point them to.
- [00:44:48.530]Just let the victim know that he or she has the option
- [00:44:50.330]to report directly to the police
- [00:44:52.500]or that you can report without
- [00:44:57.030]actually involving the police themselves.
- [00:45:00.190]So that would be through the electronic report.
- [00:45:04.610]Let the victim know you're required to forward the report
- [00:45:07.570]but it's just for statistical purposes
- [00:45:09.500]that, you know if they don't want their name included
- [00:45:11.870]then they won't be included.
- [00:45:14.980]Let the victim know the reporting options.
- [00:45:16.610]Subsequent actions taken are up to them.
- [00:45:19.400]They can choose, you know
- [00:45:20.340]now they can actually report to somebody or not.
- [00:45:23.530]But it's important that you suggest that the incident
- [00:45:26.900]that they report it to authorities,
- [00:45:29.880]mainly UNLPD for official action.
- [00:45:33.700]If we don't know what's going on, we can't address it.
- [00:45:37.850]And people, if they don't include their names
- [00:45:40.400]it's pretty much impossible to follow up on
- [00:45:43.220]and try to remedy the situation.
- [00:45:45.690]But you know, some people don't want to and that's fine.
- [00:45:48.260]It's completely up to them
- [00:45:50.480]but you still have to forward what happened and where
- [00:45:54.021]to the UNLPD.
- [00:45:57.733]Compliance is not voluntary.
- [00:46:00.140]We're all institutions from big schools like us
- [00:46:04.440]and bigger down to beauty colleges that might be in a mall.
- [00:46:09.770]If they receive federal dollars
- [00:46:11.770]then they are beholden to the Clery Act.
- [00:46:15.140]And if we're audited and it's audited
- [00:46:18.290]up to $58,000 now violation.
- [00:46:23.020]So here's some that have been found
- [00:46:27.730]to be violation of the Clery Act.
- [00:46:30.110]The biggest one to date, which I need to get on here is,
- [00:46:32.320]Penn State with the Sandusky Sandberg scandal.
- [00:46:35.160]They ended up being fined over $2 million by the Clery act.
- [00:46:40.020]So it's something that, like I said, we have to do.
- [00:46:45.310]But if you have any questions,
- [00:46:47.260]don't hesitate to contact me.
- [00:46:48.710]There's my email.
- [00:46:50.909]And I think we're gonna watch a video
- [00:46:52.600]that was created by the Clery center
- [00:46:55.260]on the kind of highlights what
- [00:46:58.490]campus security authorities do
- [00:47:00.150]in their role and importance.
- [00:47:02.450]Michael, we do have one question
- [00:47:04.400]before we watch the video.
- [00:47:06.090]Do you have to be an official CSA
- [00:47:08.230]in order to report things using the Clery form
- [00:47:10.740]or would using tips be better for non CSA people?
- [00:47:16.120]Honestly, I mean, if it's...
- [00:47:18.540]I would contact the UNLPD directly.
- [00:47:22.950]The terrible tip sometimes is it's hard to follow up on
- [00:47:25.640]but I would say use the...
- [00:47:27.796]If it's not a serious emergency,
- [00:47:30.220]go through tips because the Clery Act form
- [00:47:33.710]is set up for either campus security authorities
- [00:47:36.230]or law enforcement outside law enforcement agencies.
- [00:47:39.700]So, I mean, I would always urge people,
- [00:47:43.860]I guess to contact if it's crime related
- [00:47:45.830]to the UNLPD directly,
- [00:47:48.840]just because it's reported to the UNLPD doesn't mean
- [00:47:50.893]that it has to be investigated or followed up on
- [00:47:53.960]it can just be done for an information report.
- [00:47:56.960]You can just write the report for documentation
- [00:48:00.770]but it's important because that might be,
- [00:48:03.570]Hey, we had something like that happen
- [00:48:05.390]you know, same thing in a different spot
- [00:48:07.660]and lead on to,
- [00:48:09.320]Hey, we've got something serious going on here
- [00:48:11.920]which is the entire goal of...
- [00:48:13.810]The CSA has been getting all these reports in
- [00:48:16.930]is so we know what's going on as the police department
- [00:48:20.570]and can put out an emergency alert or a timely warning
- [00:48:23.950]and do what we need to do to keep the campus safe.
- [00:48:27.440]So that answered the question, I hope?
- [00:48:33.700]Okay, great.
- [00:48:34.700]So I will show the video.
- [00:48:36.970]Michael, I need you to stop sharing your screen
- [00:48:40.036](indistinct)
- [00:48:48.160]It's at the top.
- [00:48:55.790]Did I do it?
- [00:48:56.800]Nope, there you go.
- [00:48:59.560]Okay.
- [00:49:00.393]Okay.
- [00:49:01.850]So here is the video.
- [00:49:12.329](soft music)
- [00:49:22.760]You are a Campus Security Authority.
- [00:49:26.130]Campus security authorities are defined by the Clery Act
- [00:49:29.070]and identified by institutions.
- [00:49:31.270]They are required to report certain crimes
- [00:49:33.300]and to know their reporting responsibilities.
- [00:49:39.560]I think the role of a CSA, why it's so important
- [00:49:41.500]is that you know, when there's something that happens
- [00:49:44.500]and it's you know, it's something that affects you.
- [00:50:00.240]We seem to be stuck.
- [00:50:04.740]I'm gonna try reloading it.
- [00:50:10.330]Okay, here we go.
- [00:50:16.654](soft music)
- [00:50:25.747]You are a Campus Security Authority.
- [00:50:29.450]Campus security authorities are defined by the Clery Act
- [00:50:32.410]and identified by institutions.
- [00:50:34.600]They're required to report certain crimes
- [00:50:36.630]and to know their reporting responsibilities.
- [00:50:43.030]I think the role of a CSA, why it's so important is that
- [00:50:46.465]you know, when there's something that happens
- [00:50:47.910]and it's you know, it's something that affected
- [00:50:49.480]somebody's life,
- [00:50:50.440]whether it be an employee or a student visitor
- [00:50:53.460]whether it be a crime or some incident,
- [00:50:55.970]being a CSA and understanding what that means
- [00:50:57.830]to be able to know your responsibility
- [00:50:59.370]and role in reporting that
- [00:51:00.400]so that action can be taken and support can be given,
- [00:51:03.430]I think is extremely important,
- [00:51:04.990]not only to that individual but to the community.
- [00:51:09.340]So the CSA role is important to me in my experience,
- [00:51:13.520]in how it creates opportunities
- [00:51:17.010]for information to be gathered.
- [00:51:19.330]And ensures that those of us who are engaging
- [00:51:22.200]with students,
- [00:51:23.033]engaging with a part of our university community
- [00:51:25.660]have appropriate folks around them
- [00:51:27.910]who are ensuring that they can be here safely,
- [00:51:30.050]that they can go to a basketball game,
- [00:51:32.360]that they can go to class
- [00:51:33.400]that they can...
- [00:51:34.233]But know that they're gonna be safe while they're doing it.
- [00:51:37.110]Students need to feel a sense of community
- [00:51:39.840]and support around issues of safety.
- [00:51:42.016]It's a difficult issue for most people
- [00:51:44.630]to deal with individually.
- [00:51:46.530]And some people feel more comfortable approaching
- [00:51:49.703]different kinds of folks.
- [00:51:51.250]So I think it's at this for that age group
- [00:51:54.730]that we're working with,
- [00:51:55.563]it's always good to have options and choices for them.
- [00:51:58.470]If you just tell them, Oh, you have to go here.
- [00:52:01.500]The likelihood of that happening sometimes isn't as great
- [00:52:04.590]as if you say, Oh, here are all your choices
- [00:52:06.790]and you choose whatever works for you.
- [00:52:09.760]I think that's the best way to ensure people's safety
- [00:52:13.010]and that they have a sense
- [00:52:13.890]of there's a community working on this.
- [00:52:16.000]It's not just one person's responsibility.
- [00:52:24.440]The Clery Act defines campus security authorities
- [00:52:26.890]and institutions identify who on their campus
- [00:52:29.120]falls under that definition,
- [00:52:30.640]which is a wide range of individuals
- [00:52:32.220]who typically have a security function
- [00:52:34.440]or significant responsibility
- [00:52:36.020]for student and campus activities.
- [00:52:43.240]As a CSA, the basics of what you share
- [00:52:45.370]are the nature of the incident.
- [00:52:46.810]So essentially the information that was reported to you.
- [00:52:50.510]You also share the date and time it occurred,
- [00:52:53.840]the date and time it was reported to you
- [00:52:56.240]and where it took place.
- [00:53:00.450]CSA's must report incidents
- [00:53:02.120]at specific geographic locations.
- [00:53:04.530]This includes on-campus buildings and property
- [00:53:06.880]and adjacent public property
- [00:53:08.760]but also certain non-campus buildings
- [00:53:11.090]owned or controlled by the institution
- [00:53:13.190]or by their student organizations.
- [00:53:15.370]There are specific Clery Act crimes that must be reported.
- [00:53:18.430]They fall in four broad crime categories.
- [00:53:41.966]There's certain obviously certain Clery reportable crimes.
- [00:53:45.160]You know, some that come to mind, arson or homicide, robbery
- [00:53:47.660]some of those higher level ones
- [00:53:48.620]but some of the ones that we may not think about as often
- [00:53:50.490]or something like intimate partner violence
- [00:53:52.660]or domestic violence stalking
- [00:53:55.280]even sometimes alcohol violations.
- [00:53:56.820]So it can be a pretty broad range.
- [00:53:58.320]So we don't expect everybody to become an expert
- [00:54:00.830]on every single crime
- [00:54:02.320]but pretty much most crimes we're gonna see occur
- [00:54:05.140]within the university community
- [00:54:06.220]are gonna be classified as a potential Clery crime.
- [00:54:09.030]But then looking at,
- [00:54:09.863]especially when it's a victim based crime,
- [00:54:12.120]we wanna make sure especially those
- [00:54:13.420]are gonna be reported immediately.
- [00:54:15.150]No, you certainly don't have to be an expert in Clery.
- [00:54:17.765]There's only (mumbles) but so many people who are experts
- [00:54:19.810]in Clery,
- [00:54:20.643]it can be confusing to somebody
- [00:54:21.720]who doesn't work with it every day.
- [00:54:23.730]When in doubt, make the report.
- [00:54:25.080]If it doesn't meet the Clery guidelines
- [00:54:27.310]as far as reporting or anything like that,
- [00:54:29.110]it's still sometimes very good information for us to know
- [00:54:31.430]to be able to act on.
- [00:54:33.900]So your job is really not terribly broad
- [00:54:38.480]which is simply to be receptive,
- [00:54:40.610]to be warm, to be comforting,
- [00:54:42.670]to take the information and then to send it forward
- [00:54:44.900]and to make certain that the student who's reporting to you
- [00:54:47.890]doesn't have an immediate need for some support themselves.
- [00:54:50.910]When someone reports to a campus security authority
- [00:54:53.600]and the CSA then passes that report along
- [00:54:56.680]that then initiate a number of different supports.
- [00:55:00.510]And the particular supports depend
- [00:55:03.180]on the person's own role at the university.
- [00:55:06.210]So there are some specific to students,
- [00:55:08.620]some specific to faculty and staff.
- [00:55:11.000]They are all designed to help that person recover and heal
- [00:55:14.970]from the experience
- [00:55:16.330]and to continue their life as a part
- [00:55:19.760]of the university community
- [00:55:22.240]as strongly as possible.
- [00:55:29.750]We have a number of academic supports for students.
- [00:55:31.810]So if something occurs that's impacting their ability
- [00:55:35.640]to be a student
- [00:55:36.473]whether it's the student disability access center,
- [00:55:38.510]whether it's their association Dean,
- [00:55:40.280]whether it's a department chair
- [00:55:41.940]we work really closely with them to make sure
- [00:55:43.660]that they can continue to thrive academically
- [00:55:46.020]if they need any flexibility or accommodations
- [00:55:48.840]within the classroom, that they can have that as well.
- [00:55:51.300]And so we kind of pride ourselves
- [00:55:54.720]on being that gatekeeper
- [00:55:55.980]and to your point about making sure the doors are open
- [00:55:58.700]that there's open doors for individuals who are reporting.
- [00:56:01.670]If they don't know where those open doors are
- [00:56:03.270]kind of leading them to those open doors.
- [00:56:05.320]And if that's not the right open door to them,
- [00:56:07.466]I like to think we have a huge hallway
- [00:56:10.070]that they can continue to kind of find that right space
- [00:56:13.020]for them and the right supports they need.
- [00:56:16.020]Know your area.
- [00:56:16.870]Know your responsibility within your specific department
- [00:56:19.820]and know what do I need to do if this comes?
- [00:56:22.860]And not worry about the large university as a whole
- [00:56:25.720]but more of what's my responsibility here
- [00:56:28.780]to be best prepared if I do receive this information
- [00:56:30.810]because it can be potentially life-changing to somebody
- [00:56:33.550]if they're reporting something like that to you.
- [00:56:36.660]Especially when somebody who you feel you have
- [00:56:39.580]a relationship with a report with
- [00:56:40.827]and they tell you something that you feel like
- [00:56:43.210]you may need to report under these guidelines.
- [00:56:46.010]And that could be a hard conversation
- [00:56:47.340]because you don't wanna betray their trust
- [00:56:49.320]that they're confiding in you
- [00:56:50.900]but also recognizing within your role
- [00:56:53.250]you do have to report this.
- [00:56:54.560]And it's also the right thing to do.
- [00:56:57.260]Yeah, so there's actually a good chunk of training
- [00:56:59.660]devoted to that notification.
- [00:57:02.930]What we are trained to do is to interrupt them
- [00:57:06.230]when we kind of see the conversation leading
- [00:57:07.900]in that direction and just.
- [00:57:09.830]Pausing them and saying, can I pause you for a minute?
- [00:57:13.570]It looks to me like you're about
- [00:57:14.970]to tell me something significant
- [00:57:16.840]and I am happy to listen to you
- [00:57:19.150]and I want you to know that I'm here to listen.
- [00:57:21.682]I also need to let you know that.
- [00:57:23.700]I do have the obligation to now report this
- [00:57:26.700]to the university,
- [00:57:28.710]to not only assist you, so that they can assist you
- [00:57:30.650]but also maybe the safety of the community as well.
- [00:57:33.870]So kind of recognizing and appreciating
- [00:57:35.830]that they're telling you this
- [00:57:37.330]but also being upfront with them right off the bat
- [00:57:40.490]about what your obligations are
- [00:57:42.470]what they have to do with that information.
- [00:57:44.950]What I wouldn't recommend is,
- [00:57:46.410]I'm doing this 'cause the government's telling me to
- [00:57:48.800]or I'm doing this because I have to
- [00:57:51.860]and making it feel burdensome.
- [00:57:54.920]I think what I would recommend is that
- [00:57:59.090]talking about the responsibility to report
- [00:58:01.920]as a way to support that individual.
- [00:58:06.140]And so I think the primary function
- [00:58:08.390]is not sharing it as a requirement,
- [00:58:11.930]sharing this as like,
- [00:58:12.763]ah this is something that I have to do
- [00:58:14.790]but rather this is something that I wanna do
- [00:58:16.480]to make sure that you have the support
- [00:58:20.470]and that you're getting the help that you need.
- [00:58:21.960]That's one of things I love working in a campus setting
- [00:58:24.590]is that we are a community
- [00:58:25.980]and we can call on each other.
- [00:58:28.780]Because I think safety is a community issue
- [00:58:31.760]that we all have to participate in.
- [00:58:33.820]I know it's hard when you're one-on-one with that student
- [00:58:35.520]and you feel like, Oh my gosh, I have to fix this right now.
- [00:58:38.990]I have to help the student right now.
- [00:58:40.050]I have to do everything.
- [00:58:40.980]And that's a real normal reaction that people have.
- [00:58:43.900]And just to take a deep breath and remember,
- [00:58:46.670]wait a minute, there's a whole group of people
- [00:58:49.860]who want to help with this issue
- [00:58:51.240]and can help with this issue.
- [00:58:54.460]So one way to think of this if I was using an analogy
- [00:58:57.100]would be an umbrella.
- [00:58:58.160]And if you look at an umbrella when it's open,
- [00:58:59.740]you have all the spokes of the umbrella
- [00:59:01.350]going out to the ends, right?
- [00:59:02.967]The CSA's are all those spokes,
- [00:59:04.840]all those wires in the umbrella
- [00:59:06.690]that ultimately channel back up to the top of the umbrella.
- [00:59:09.720]That's how you have to have that interconnected linkage.
- [00:59:13.840]I mean, it takes a lot of courage
- [00:59:15.280]to report a crime in general.
- [00:59:18.570]None of us wanna be put in that situation
- [00:59:20.760]or feel that we've been victimized in some way
- [00:59:23.330]or made vulnerable in some way.
- [00:59:25.000]So it takes a lot of courage
- [00:59:26.150]to be able to actually report that
- [00:59:28.770]if you get up the courage to report that
- [00:59:31.000]and then nothing happens as a result
- [00:59:33.030]that can feel extremely invalidating.
- [00:59:35.860]It's having those everyday interactions
- [00:59:37.850]that we do with phones
- [00:59:38.683]but also knowing that we're part of something bigger
- [00:59:41.190]and a part of something greater
- [00:59:42.150]in terms of just making sure
- [00:59:43.450]that we're all doing our part to make sure that folks
- [00:59:46.720]can be here and be safe.
- [00:59:50.170]Don't be afraid.
- [00:59:51.003]These are your students.
- [00:59:52.040]These are your colleagues.
- [00:59:53.870]You have some type of a relationship
- [00:59:55.470]or they wouldn't be talking with you.
- [00:59:56.920]And if you were frightened and upset
- [00:59:58.920]then that's gonna upset the students or your colleague
- [01:00:01.930]who's trying to talk with you more.
- [01:00:04.330]So if you can just take a deep breath,
- [01:00:07.770]trust your relationship with your students,
- [01:00:09.440]trust your skills
- [01:00:10.430]and know that there are a lot of resources to help you.
- [01:00:17.920]Your role as a CSA does not have to end
- [01:00:20.070]with receiving and passing on reports.
- [01:00:22.720]You can be an ambassador for Clery every day
- [01:00:25.060]as a campus security authority.
- [01:00:27.470]Through the interactions you have with others,
- [01:00:29.490]the events you attend on campus,
- [01:00:31.410]you play an active role in your campus community.
- [01:00:34.690]You help set the tone so that individuals
- [01:00:36.610]can feel comfortable accessing the network of people
- [01:00:39.200]and resources available to them.
- [01:00:42.100]Now that you know you're CSA, what will you do?
- [01:00:52.440]Okay. Oh, quiz number three.
- [01:00:56.188]Justi, are you ready?
- [01:01:00.810]So as a campus security authority,
- [01:01:02.560]if you witness a crime or if someone reports a crime to you,
- [01:01:06.130]you should call the following as soon as possible.
- [01:01:08.850]The Wellness Attendants supervisor,
- [01:01:10.690]the UNL police, the City of Lincoln police
- [01:01:13.040]or none of these, it's not your problem.
- [01:01:44.980]Maybe just another second.
- [01:01:50.270]Okay, Justi do you wanna show that results?
- [01:01:53.230]So most of you said that UNL police
- [01:01:57.877]and that is the right answer.
- [01:01:59.330]You do wanna tell, you want to call or use the report via
- [01:02:03.684]the various ways that that Michael went through
- [01:02:07.600]to the UNL police,
- [01:02:09.140]if you witnessed a crime or if someone reports
- [01:02:12.100]that crime to you.
- [01:02:14.171]All right.
- [01:02:15.004]So, moving along.
- [01:02:20.990]So here are your details of your position
- [01:02:24.170]as a Wellness Attendant.
- [01:02:25.830]So we do ask that you try to arrive
- [01:02:27.530]10 to 15 minutes early for your shift.
- [01:02:29.730]This will give you time to check the color of the day.
- [01:02:33.200]And it'll give you time to check your email
- [01:02:35.210]for any announcements.
- [01:02:36.650]We are in the process of setting up a Microsoft Teams team
- [01:02:41.610]for the Wellness Attendants
- [01:02:42.477]and so it might be through teams
- [01:02:44.190]or it might be through email.
- [01:02:45.590]For right now check your email religiously.
- [01:02:50.210]And we will get information to you.
- [01:02:52.700]You don't have your schedule yet.
- [01:02:54.360]We are still building the schedule.
- [01:02:56.340]You will need to be checking your email
- [01:02:59.830]so that you get that schedule.
- [01:03:01.730]Bring your phone with you when you report to work.
- [01:03:04.440]You're gonna wanna use that to report your attendance.
- [01:03:07.510]I think that's gonna be done through Microsoft Teams.
- [01:03:11.240]We will get that to you.
- [01:03:14.740]You will need to be able to show
- [01:03:16.310]your access granted status card
- [01:03:18.150]if you are asked to show it
- [01:03:19.790]and you may need to call a supervisor during your shift.
- [01:03:22.317]So you need to have your phone with you.
- [01:03:24.780]You also need to have your vest.
- [01:03:27.860]Julie, are you still here?
- [01:03:29.380]And if so, can you turn on your video?
- [01:03:34.260]And Justi, can you highlight her if she's here?
- [01:03:40.360]She's here but she's...
- [01:03:42.160]Oh maybe you should just--
- [01:03:43.194]No, not now.
- [01:03:49.487]Julia, can you maybe like hold your...
- [01:03:51.630]I think you're on your phone
- [01:03:52.530]but can you hold it further out or get further away
- [01:03:55.130]so that people can see your gorgeous vest that you have on?
- [01:03:58.470]Thank you, Julie.
- [01:03:59.430]So Julie is our Wellness Attendants Supervisor
- [01:04:02.580]I said that earlier.
- [01:04:05.370]And she is actually serving
- [01:04:07.100]as the Wellness Attendant for the college of law this week
- [01:04:09.650]because they started classes this week.
- [01:04:12.350](indistinct)
- [01:04:15.060]Okay, thank you, Julie.
- [01:04:15.893]You can turn it back off
- [01:04:18.702]and Justi you can unpin her.
- [01:04:20.780]So you will need to wear your vest
- [01:04:24.250]when you are a Wellness Attendant
- [01:04:25.210]that's what identifies you as a Wellness Attendant.
- [01:04:27.440]So you pick that up before your first day of work.
- [01:04:30.370]I very strongly encourage you to pick it up
- [01:04:33.040]today or tomorrow,
- [01:04:34.040]just because you don't know
- [01:04:35.050]when your first day of work is going to be yet.
- [01:04:37.340]So pick it up from the EVC office in 208 Canfield.
- [01:04:41.790]Juanita Jackson's donor will be there Monday through Friday,
- [01:04:45.480]8:00a.m to 1:30p.m and 2:30p.m to 5:00p.m.
- [01:04:49.180]So you can go and pick up your vest.
- [01:04:52.500]You will need to be wearing a face covering
- [01:04:54.960]when you pick up your vest
- [01:04:55.910]but also when you report to work.
- [01:04:57.980]And we do ask that you refrain from eating or drinking
- [01:05:01.340]while admitting students.
- [01:05:02.930]We are imagining that most of the traffic to the building
- [01:05:06.980]will be from like 15 minutes before class starts
- [01:05:11.180]to five minutes after class starts.
- [01:05:13.590]So before that 20 minutes, try not to eat or drink.
- [01:05:17.610]Once things slow down a bit,
- [01:05:20.660]if you need to have a snack,
- [01:05:21.790]if you need to take a drink,
- [01:05:22.910]of course, that's fine.
- [01:05:24.680]Lower your mask quick.
- [01:05:25.930]Do what you need to do.
- [01:05:27.416]But we want you to have that face covering on
- [01:05:29.930]while you're admitting students.
- [01:05:33.119]I have a question, Judy.
- [01:05:35.460]Will we be working alone?
- [01:05:37.120]And when should we know our first day?
- [01:05:41.350]So you will almost surely be working alone
- [01:05:45.020]but you will not be lonely
- [01:05:46.080]because all these people will be coming into the building.
- [01:05:49.400]But you will almost surely be working alone.
- [01:05:51.560]There's a few times where I think we're putting
- [01:05:53.710]a second person if we're expecting very high traffic.
- [01:05:57.970]But for the most part, you'll be working alone.
- [01:06:00.540]And your first day,
- [01:06:03.110]we will get that out to you just as soon as we can.
- [01:06:06.900]Most of you, we know your schedule,
- [01:06:10.150]we just need to double check it
- [01:06:11.640]and then we will get that out to you.
- [01:06:13.560]So I intend to work all weekend getting this together.
- [01:06:18.870]And so it might be Sunday night
- [01:06:20.340]when you get notified of your first day
- [01:06:22.840]but you will know just as soon as we can get that to you.
- [01:06:29.330]We're still hiring.
- [01:06:30.970]We're still hiring Wellness Attendants.
- [01:06:34.100]We have a lot to do
- [01:06:35.260]but we'll get that information to you
- [01:06:38.074]just as soon as we can.
- [01:06:40.090]Anything else, Justi?
- [01:06:41.790]No additional questions.
- [01:06:43.440]Excellent. Okay.
- [01:06:47.120]If this is important, if the weather is awful
- [01:06:50.170]or even dangerous,
- [01:06:51.780]just bring people inside.
- [01:06:53.820]I don't want...
- [01:06:55.550]If there was a tornado, don't have people lined up outside
- [01:06:59.070]waiting to get in, right?
- [01:07:00.440]That's not what's important.
- [01:07:01.640]The main priority is to make sure everyone is safe.
- [01:07:05.080]Your job is as a Wellness Attendant
- [01:07:07.180]not a COVID Wellness Attendant.
- [01:07:09.417]It's a Wellness Attendant.
- [01:07:10.250]If it's dangerous to be outside, bring people inside.
- [01:07:14.240]If it's possible to do so,
- [01:07:15.990]check their status cards once they're inside.
- [01:07:18.650]But bring them inside.
- [01:07:20.700]And again, check your email.
- [01:07:23.310]We will send out our updates and notifications as needed
- [01:07:28.900]and hopefully that will be transitioning to Teams soon.
- [01:07:34.820]Quick question. Okay, yeah.
- [01:07:37.780]Will we be stationed outside
- [01:07:39.510]or inside the entry of the building?
- [01:07:41.780]It will be just inside
- [01:07:43.010]the entry of the building.
- [01:07:46.160]There should be a table and chair.
- [01:07:47.930]There might be some buildings where the Fire Marshall
- [01:07:49.810]tells us we can't have a table and chair
- [01:07:51.590]but for the most part,
- [01:07:52.720]there should be a table and chair set up for you
- [01:07:54.310]just inside the entrance to the building.
- [01:07:57.440]You will be, if the question is,
- [01:07:59.040]do you need to wear a warm coat?
- [01:08:00.970]I would say yes, because that door is gonna be opening
- [01:08:03.300]and closing all the time
- [01:08:04.900]but you'll be inside.
- [01:08:09.000]Another question.
- [01:08:10.080]If we are currently having to quarantine
- [01:08:12.100]who can we contact to let them know our availability?
- [01:08:17.930]So for right now, go ahead
- [01:08:19.770]and send that back to Alison Wartman,
- [01:08:22.730]who's the person that has been corresponding with you
- [01:08:29.260]because you have that email address,
- [01:08:30.750]go ahead and send it to her.
- [01:08:33.030]Eventually it will be the Wellness Attendants Supervisor,
- [01:08:35.660]Julie, that you'll be contacting
- [01:08:38.950]but not quite yet.
- [01:08:42.750]Anything else right now, Justi?
- [01:08:46.440]Nope, that's it.
- [01:08:47.960]Okay great. Oh wait, one last thing.
- [01:08:49.660]I'm sorry.
- [01:08:50.820]If you're the staff on duty in parentheses building contact,
- [01:08:54.410]do you need to set up a table and chair for them?
- [01:08:58.730]So that table and chair
- [01:09:01.140]that the Cabo people are working right now
- [01:09:04.080]to set up those tables and chairs.
- [01:09:07.040]So that is being delegated to the colleges.
- [01:09:09.860]I'm not sure if the colleges
- [01:09:11.250]are delegating that down to the buildings
- [01:09:13.080]or if Cabo is taking care of that.
- [01:09:15.760]So talk to your Cabo person
- [01:09:17.457]for an answer to that question.
- [01:09:23.260]I can tell you that the table and chairs
- [01:09:26.200]are being set up by the building managers.
- [01:09:32.030]Well, I do think that that's varying
- [01:09:34.640]by college because--
- [01:09:36.789](indistinct)
- [01:09:41.540]Yeah.
- [01:09:42.670]The information was given to Cabo.
- [01:09:44.180]And so, however those college business officers
- [01:09:48.075]are handling it for the college
- [01:09:50.230]that's how it's being handled.
- [01:09:51.440]So it sounds like on East campus
- [01:09:52.710]they delegate it down to the business managers
- [01:09:55.410]but I'm not sure that that's true in other colleges.
- [01:09:57.250]Okay, perfect.
- [01:09:59.980]Two more questions came in, Judy.
- [01:10:01.520]The first one is, will the tables have screens
- [01:10:04.310]to separate us from the folks we're screening?
- [01:10:07.510]No, they will not.
- [01:10:10.100]But the people coming in should have their apps up and ready
- [01:10:14.090]and they should be able to stand six feet away from you
- [01:10:18.380]and hold out that phone app for you to be able to see it.
- [01:10:24.350]And then next question.
- [01:10:26.060]What if fire alarm or tornado testing,
- [01:10:29.090]do we let everyone back in without going through checkpoint?
- [01:10:35.400]So if you're testing your fire alarms or tornado testing.
- [01:10:39.161](indistinct)
- [01:10:40.840]People shouldn't be leaving
- [01:10:41.673]during a tornado test, I hope.
- [01:10:46.040]Fire alarm, that's an excellent question.
- [01:10:48.050]I think, I mean, ideally if everybody has their app out
- [01:10:54.850]and is showing it,
- [01:10:56.190]they're just gonna be filing past anyway.
- [01:10:58.130]It's not gonna be an issue.
- [01:11:00.170]I would say use your best judgment.
- [01:11:02.140]Don't create a bottleneck in that situation.
- [01:11:06.050]But if you can check them, check them.
- [01:11:12.480]That's it for questions.
- [01:11:13.990]Okay, great.
- [01:11:15.010]So if you're not gonna be able to fulfill
- [01:11:17.780]your scheduled shift,
- [01:11:18.770]you're gonna need to notify
- [01:11:19.820]your Wellness Attendant Supervisor.
- [01:11:21.470]So that's Julie again.
- [01:11:24.380]You're going to need to notify them
- [01:11:26.720]if you can't fill your scheduled shift,
- [01:11:29.560]if you have an emergency,
- [01:11:30.500]if you're gonna be late
- [01:11:31.700]or if you find out that you're not gonna be able to work
- [01:11:34.790]on a certain day or time that you're scheduled to work.
- [01:11:38.480]Again, do not come to work sick.
- [01:11:41.440]And we are still, as I said, developing the system
- [01:11:45.640]where for communication with the Wellness Attendants.
- [01:11:48.160]I think that's...
- [01:11:48.993]I mean the Wellness Attendants Supervisor.
- [01:11:50.290]I think that's gonna be through Teams.
- [01:11:52.220]Check your email,
- [01:11:53.260]we will update you on the specifics of how to do this.
- [01:11:57.810]But we do ask that you do it as soon as possible.
- [01:12:01.460]Beyond time, right?
- [01:12:03.010]And on time we said was 10 to 15 minutes early.
- [01:12:06.550]And you have to be there the whole time.
- [01:12:08.580]If you leave early without permission
- [01:12:10.670]or if you're out of your work area
- [01:12:12.370]without notifying a supervisor
- [01:12:14.590]that can cause you to be removed
- [01:12:17.110]from your position as a Wellness Attendant.
- [01:12:22.980]Okay, I just keep hammering on this point.
- [01:12:27.250]Stay home if you have symptoms.
- [01:12:29.320]If you are sick, do not come to work.
- [01:12:32.010]Tell us that you're not coming to work.
- [01:12:34.200]But do not come to work.
- [01:12:37.750]Do not go to class.
- [01:12:39.680]Do not do anything if you are sick.
- [01:12:41.880]Just stay home and get well.
- [01:12:44.350]Okay, next quiz.
- [01:13:11.060]Judy, we did get a question.
- [01:13:12.980]Do you wanna address that now?
- [01:13:14.570]Why everybody (mumbles)
- [01:13:15.403]I'll address it after the quiz.
- [01:13:18.090]Okay, so what should you do when you arrive for your shift?
- [01:13:20.830]Be 10 to 15 minutes early.
- [01:13:22.470]Let the Wellness supervisor know that you're there.
- [01:13:25.230]Show this Wellness supervisor a screenshot
- [01:13:29.250]of your status card.
- [01:13:30.750]I think that that's gonna be part of it.
- [01:13:32.680]Put on your vest or do of all A through D.
- [01:13:36.160]So I'll give you just another second to reply.
- [01:13:41.750]We're still getting a couple more answers.
- [01:13:46.280]Okay, you wanna go ahead and show it?
- [01:13:50.180]So the answer is, do all of A through D.
- [01:13:54.332]Again, we're working out the details
- [01:13:57.660]but definitely you need to arrive early.
- [01:13:59.570]You need to let the Wellness Attendant Supervisor
- [01:14:02.200]know that you're there
- [01:14:03.097]and you need to be wearing your vest.
- [01:14:05.910]All right, Justi, what was the question?
- [01:14:08.710]Is there more flexibility
- [01:14:10.070]for the 10 to 15 minute early rule
- [01:14:12.560]if coming straight from class?
- [01:14:16.380]Yeah, you just need to make sure
- [01:14:17.523]that you're on time for your shift.
- [01:14:19.638]If you can check your app as you're walking,
- [01:14:23.130]get your vest out as you're walking.
- [01:14:25.980]But we do need you there
- [01:14:27.430]because we're scheduling you at times
- [01:14:29.800]that we think people are gonna be entering the building.
- [01:14:32.889]So if you have class that goes until 9:30
- [01:14:37.250]and you're supposed to work at 9:30
- [01:14:39.500]that's not gonna work.
- [01:14:41.240]If your classes, especially if your class is across campus.
- [01:14:44.470]If you have class until 9:20
- [01:14:47.240]and you're supposed to work at 9:30
- [01:14:48.970]and you're in the building next door
- [01:14:51.130]and so you're gonna be there five minutes early
- [01:14:53.210]instead of 15 minutes early,
- [01:14:54.730]that's fine.
- [01:14:56.340]Does that make sense?
- [01:14:58.770]Just make sure that you are prepared when you get there
- [01:15:02.230]and make sure that in worst case you are exactly on time.
- [01:15:07.180]Okay, we have a couple more questions.
- [01:15:10.120]When there are gaps between classes and there is a lull
- [01:15:12.660]and people coming through,
- [01:15:14.100]is that an okay time to work on
- [01:15:15.590]possible homework assignments
- [01:15:17.100]or should we always be a hundred percent vigilant?
- [01:15:22.070]If there is a lull,
- [01:15:23.670]you are free to work on homework.
- [01:15:25.660]You are free to do whatever but pay attention.
- [01:15:29.890]And if somebody is coming by you
- [01:15:30.723]make sure that they're showing you their app.
- [01:15:33.790]Yeah but I'm not gonna make you just sit there
- [01:15:35.450]and stare into nothingness.
- [01:15:38.430]That's not useful for anybody.
- [01:15:41.640]Okay, so kind of on (indistinct) homework, I guess
- [01:15:44.200]if you have homework that you can have to concentrate on.
- [01:15:47.720]Next question.
- [01:15:48.990]Why a screenshot instead of the actual status card
- [01:15:51.870]in the app?
- [01:15:52.703]I think referring to like showing your supervisor.
- [01:15:56.070]Yeah. Because your supervisor
- [01:15:58.380]can't be everywhere at the same time
- [01:16:00.470]and you're gonna be sharing that electronically somehow.
- [01:16:06.870]So it's not perfect.
- [01:16:07.910]She won't be able to see the spinning circle
- [01:16:10.000]but she'll see the color of the day
- [01:16:11.670]and she'll see whether it's access granted or access denied.
- [01:16:16.790]That's a really good question.
- [01:16:18.240]But you won't be checking in with your supervisor in person.
- [01:16:21.240]You're gonna be checking in via Teams, I think.
- [01:16:25.930]Okay, final question for this round.
- [01:16:28.760]Who would you notify if you need
- [01:16:30.290]to leave your station briefly,
- [01:16:31.920]example to go to the bathroom?
- [01:16:34.400]The building contact.
- [01:16:37.130]Yeah just let the building contact
- [01:16:38.550]know that you're doing that
- [01:16:39.720]and try to do that during those lulls between classes.
- [01:16:43.480]So the way that we have scheduled the Wellness Attendants,
- [01:16:47.410]we know when classes start
- [01:16:49.590]and we have the Wellness Attendant scheduled
- [01:16:51.570]from 30 minutes before the start of class
- [01:16:54.440]to 15 minutes after the start of class.
- [01:16:58.130]That first little bit and the last little bit
- [01:17:01.470]are probably gonna be pretty slow.
- [01:17:03.710]The middle part is where you're gonna have
- [01:17:05.550]most of the traffic.
- [01:17:07.160]And then there's also going to be
- [01:17:09.310]like, if we have a 9:30 class and a 10:30 class
- [01:17:14.040]we're just gonna staff continuously.
- [01:17:16.680]And so there's definitely gonna be some time in there
- [01:17:19.520]where there shouldn't be people coming in and out
- [01:17:21.500]of the building, right?
- [01:17:22.780]Where everybody is in class but you're still on the job.
- [01:17:27.643]And that's the time that you get up
- [01:17:28.697]and go to the bathroom if possible.
- [01:17:34.235]All right.
- [01:17:35.068]Okay, one more question came through Judy, sorry.
- [01:17:37.390]Will the chairs slash tables be out all the time?
- [01:17:40.820]What if someone that's not a worker
- [01:17:42.870]is sitting at the table
- [01:17:44.610]and then do we need to sanitize the space
- [01:17:46.940]after and or before shifts?
- [01:17:51.730]So there should be sanitizer there
- [01:17:54.100]and so that is probably a good idea
- [01:17:56.160]to sanitize before and after your shift.
- [01:18:00.080]If somebody else is sitting there tell them to move,
- [01:18:03.240]it will be clear that this is a Wellness Attendants station
- [01:18:06.570]and you will have your vest on.
- [01:18:08.450]So ask them to move.
- [01:18:11.770]Your Non-escalation, De-escalation technique
- [01:18:14.580]should come in handy with that.
- [01:18:17.080]But yeah, that is your table and your chair
- [01:18:20.190]as Wellness Attendants.
- [01:18:21.220]So you do what you need to do to have it be yours.
- [01:18:27.200]So that means asking people to move,
- [01:18:29.780]that means sanitizing it.
- [01:18:32.590]Yep.
- [01:18:35.070]Okay. Couple more.
- [01:18:39.500]If there is someone popping in and out of a building
- [01:18:42.060]is it okay to let them pass
- [01:18:43.790]if you have already scanned the first time
- [01:18:45.830]they came through?
- [01:18:48.410]Julie just raised her hand.
- [01:18:50.200]She might have more to add.
- [01:18:52.370]Julie.
- [01:18:53.203]Hi.
- [01:18:54.036]Okay, so I am working today at the college of law.
- [01:18:58.090]And so I'm kind of getting an idea of what all to expect.
- [01:19:03.680]There is sanitizing wipes that I would suggest cleaning
- [01:19:07.620]as you get here and then right before you leave.
- [01:19:10.440]There are masks there.
- [01:19:12.450]So in case somebody forgot their mask,
- [01:19:15.270]you can give them a mask.
- [01:19:16.960]Please check everyone every single time.
- [01:19:20.220]I don't know about you
- [01:19:21.270]but recognizing people as you're just seeing
- [01:19:24.240]20 or 30 strangers,
- [01:19:26.310]you have no idea if you've seen them before or not.
- [01:19:28.380]So it shouldn't be a problem.
- [01:19:30.470]Even if they say, "Hey, you just checked mine."
- [01:19:33.040]Okay, well, I'm sorry you came back in the door.
- [01:19:35.590]Can I just please check that one more time?
- [01:19:37.810]It's really not that big of a deal.
- [01:19:40.900]Now, if they say they can't,
- [01:19:42.460]their app is not working,
- [01:19:44.260]ask them to close all their apps on their phone.
- [01:19:47.360]If that doesn't work, ask them to restart their phone.
- [01:19:50.410]Sometimes they just need to restart their phone
- [01:19:52.988]and the app will come up then.
- [01:19:58.620]Great. Thank you, Julie.
- [01:20:01.890]It's great to have that perspective of somebody
- [01:20:04.190]who's in this.
- [01:20:05.760]Yeah and I absolutely agree with Julie
- [01:20:09.070]that if there's somebody that walks out
- [01:20:13.100]and wants to come back in,
- [01:20:14.590]make them show you their app.
- [01:20:16.400]But if you're sitting there
- [01:20:18.117]and there's zero traffic around
- [01:20:19.780]and you've got somebody that's, you know
- [01:20:22.080]this one person is carrying these boxes
- [01:20:25.020]in and out of the building repeatedly
- [01:20:27.070]and their hands are full
- [01:20:28.330]and you've already checked their app,
- [01:20:30.860]let them go.
- [01:20:31.693]Especially if there's nobody around, right?
- [01:20:33.700]Use your judgment.
- [01:20:34.890]But in general, yes, check it every time.
- [01:20:38.370]Justi?
- [01:20:39.203]One more question,
- [01:20:40.480]does the building supervisor need to come
- [01:20:42.650]and cover the door if someone uses the restroom?
- [01:20:48.710]I would say no
- [01:20:51.490]unless it's convenient to do so.
- [01:20:53.220]If it's convenient to do so
- [01:20:54.430]that would be a really great idea
- [01:20:56.270]but don't feel obligated to do it.
- [01:21:00.340]Especially if the Wellness Attendant
- [01:21:02.490]is choosing a time of very little traffic
- [01:21:07.310]to use the restroom.
- [01:21:09.850]And again, most of the shifts they're gonna be
- [01:21:14.098]you know, an hour, two hours, something like that.
- [01:21:17.110]So hopefully this won't actually come up that often
- [01:21:20.200]and you can use the restroom before your shift starts
- [01:21:23.014]in those 10 to 15 minutes where you've shown up early.
- [01:21:27.160]And also, hi this is Julie again.
- [01:21:29.080]Also I will be making my rounds.
- [01:21:31.850]So if I happen to come in,
- [01:21:34.030]I will ask, Hey, do you need a quick break real quick
- [01:21:36.770]or do you need to run to the restroom while I'm here?
- [01:21:40.150]Perfect. Thank you, Julie.
- [01:21:44.370]Okay. Ah, good questions.
- [01:21:47.920]We just did that.
- [01:21:50.058]Justi, do you have any more?
- [01:21:51.380]Nope. There's no additional questions.
- [01:21:53.690]Great. Okay.
- [01:21:54.780]So what we're gonna do to close out the training
- [01:21:58.790]is show a video on Non-escalation
- [01:22:01.470]and De-escalation techniques.
- [01:22:03.750]This video is from the Police Training Institute
- [01:22:06.580]at the University of Illinois at Urbana champagne.
- [01:22:09.160]There are three quizzes during the video.
- [01:22:12.530]They are gonna talk about Wellness support associates,
- [01:22:15.230]that's what they call them at Illinois.
- [01:22:17.110]That's the same thing as our Wellness Attendants.
- [01:22:19.770]So Justi, do you wanna show that video?
- [01:22:24.120]Yeah but I did get a couple more questions.
- [01:22:27.610]Okay.
- [01:22:28.443]As a building supervisor,
- [01:22:29.840]I was hoping that we could hold the extra masks,
- [01:22:32.680]sanitizing wipes and printouts in our office
- [01:22:35.160]when there is not a Wellness Attendant available.
- [01:22:37.560]Is that okay?
- [01:22:39.230]Sure.
- [01:22:41.910]Okay and then will there be a place
- [01:22:43.600]to put personal items
- [01:22:44.870]or can they ask the building contact?
- [01:22:50.220]So you're gonna be sitting at a table and chair
- [01:22:53.380]so you can probably just put it underneath your table
- [01:22:55.970]but if you need to ask the building contact
- [01:23:00.240]feel free to do that.
- [01:23:03.260]Okay, and then I may have missed this
- [01:23:06.000]but are there COVID supplies provided by the building
- [01:23:09.120]or the Wellness team?
- [01:23:11.270]The building is responsible for providing
- [01:23:14.030]the Wellness supplies.
- [01:23:17.960]Okay, I'm going to share screen.
- [01:23:19.860]Oh, one more question.
- [01:23:21.300]How exactly do we report to the supervisor
- [01:23:23.750]that we are there?
- [01:23:25.630]You read your email and we will tell you
- [01:23:29.150]because we don't exactly know yet.
- [01:23:31.350]We are in the process of setting up Microsoft Teams
- [01:23:34.530]for the Wellness Attendants
- [01:23:36.030]and we think that that's going to be how you do it
- [01:23:38.680]but we are not quite sure yet.
- [01:23:40.820]And so read your email,
- [01:23:45.230]read your email,
- [01:23:46.063]read your email.
- [01:23:46.896]And you will eventually get an answer to that, I promise.
- [01:23:52.730]Okay that's it for questions.
- [01:23:54.050]I'll start the video.
- [01:23:55.417]Great. Okay.
- [01:23:58.040]All right, I know it's hard for everybody
- [01:23:59.490]to stay engaged in Zoom type training sessions,
- [01:24:04.800]so we're gonna try to make this as fun as we can.
- [01:24:07.940]And a couple of ways I do that and Kathy knows this.
- [01:24:11.140]And from time to time,
- [01:24:12.220]I'll throw in some of my awesome jokes
- [01:24:14.640]and at least when I don't hear anybody laughing
- [01:24:18.510]I'll assume you're laughing
- [01:24:19.920]because a lot of times in my live ones
- [01:24:21.660]I don't get a whole lot of laughs either.
- [01:24:23.470]And I might even spit out a rhyme or two, who knows?
- [01:24:26.140]Okay, so here's what we're gonna start.
- [01:24:28.989]We're gonna start by talking about why we call this
- [01:24:32.100]not just de-escalation but non-escalation.
- [01:24:35.550]Because how you talk to somebody to begin with
- [01:24:38.810]can prevent things from escalating.
- [01:24:41.420]And then if things do escalate
- [01:24:43.420]we are going to work on a couple of very basic things
- [01:24:46.660]to help deescalate the situation.
- [01:24:49.860]And if you don't remember anything else
- [01:24:52.550]out of this entire block of instruction
- [01:24:55.400]I want you to not necessarily memorize
- [01:24:57.540]but have a really good understanding
- [01:24:59.480]of what we call the five step.
- [01:25:01.640]And I want you to have a really good understanding
- [01:25:03.710]of what we call empathy phrases or deflection phrases.
- [01:25:07.690]So I'm going to kind of give you an overall
- [01:25:10.730]this is how the deescalation training works.
- [01:25:13.610]I'm gonna apply it to a couple of different
- [01:25:15.460]types of scenarios.
- [01:25:16.970]And then we are going to bring it in more specific
- [01:25:19.640]to the Wellness support associates.
- [01:25:22.330]Okay. So here's five steps.
- [01:25:24.330]And the five steps are common sense
- [01:25:27.980]but sometimes you know, under stress
- [01:25:30.310]it's not easy to go through your steps
- [01:25:31.890]but just think about this,
- [01:25:33.350]if I want somebody to do something,
- [01:25:36.760]you know, would they rather be asked or told?
- [01:25:39.510]And since I don't have a live audience
- [01:25:40.970]I'm gonna answer for you.
- [01:25:42.370]Okay, so people would rather be asked
- [01:25:44.710]but as soon as you ask somebody to do something
- [01:25:47.880]the first thing they're thinking is,
- [01:25:49.607]"Hmm, why do I need to do that?"
- [01:25:52.900]So when we're wanting someone to do something, we ask them
- [01:25:55.820]and we just immediately follow up with explaining why.
- [01:25:58.660]Why we want them to do it.
- [01:25:59.570]It may be something they don't wanna do.
- [01:26:01.620]And so we're gonna try to minimize it
- [01:26:03.190]and make it sound like this is not a big deal.
- [01:26:04.840]And this is what we want you to do
- [01:26:06.748]and this is why we want you to do it.
- [01:26:09.090]But that doesn't always work, okay?
- [01:26:10.750]So then we're gonna go into this step
- [01:26:12.480]called, present options.
- [01:26:15.470]And if I want somebody to do something
- [01:26:18.570]I'm gonna ask them, I'm gonna explain it to them.
- [01:26:21.280]And they're still not wanting to go along with the program.
- [01:26:24.070]I'm gonna give them options.
- [01:26:25.150]And even if the option I want them to do
- [01:26:27.120]they absolutely don't wanna do it
- [01:26:28.970]they think this is awful,
- [01:26:30.100]they're angry about it.
- [01:26:32.190]That is still the best option for them.
- [01:26:34.530]And I'm gonna make it sound like this is the best option
- [01:26:37.400]because unfortunately, if we don't do this option
- [01:26:40.920]this is what's gonna happen, right?
- [01:26:42.860]You might be in worse trouble, worse things can happen.
- [01:26:45.670]I don't want that for you.
- [01:26:47.300]Just try to remember we're always on their side.
- [01:26:49.610]We're always treating them with respect
- [01:26:51.140]and we're always empathizing.
- [01:26:52.730]I don't want that for you.
- [01:26:54.010]Right now this is all we have
- [01:26:55.310]and this is what I'm asking you to do.
- [01:26:57.570]But that doesn't always work either
- [01:26:59.410]so there might be where we actually just have to confirm
- [01:27:02.090]you know, sir, maam, is there anything I can say
- [01:27:04.480]to gain your cooperation right now?
- [01:27:06.120]This is all I'm asking you to do
- [01:27:07.440]to go along with the program
- [01:27:09.260]and downplay it, minimize things
- [01:27:11.820]and then you might get no compliance at all.
- [01:27:15.740]So then you would act.
- [01:27:16.920]Okay, I'm not getting any compliance at all.
- [01:27:19.310]So then you're gonna act
- [01:27:20.250]in that depending on where you're working
- [01:27:21.677]and what your job is
- [01:27:22.750]'cause I teach this all over the place.
- [01:27:24.130]Some examples might be,
- [01:27:25.790]you might get assistance from a coworker.
- [01:27:28.960]You might just disengage and get out of there.
- [01:27:30.497]And there's nothing wrong with being safe.
- [01:27:32.540]If you feel like things are dangerous
- [01:27:35.110]or things are building up to the point
- [01:27:36.740]where things could get violent
- [01:27:38.290]then you can disengage,
- [01:27:39.790]you can walk away and you can run away if you have to.
- [01:27:42.840]Worst case scenario you might have to protect yourself.
- [01:27:45.170]We don't want you to have to do that.
- [01:27:46.450]I'd rather you disengage.
- [01:27:48.170]But if you have to protect yourself,
- [01:27:51.000]you do have the right to protect yourself.
- [01:27:53.400]If you're being attacked,
- [01:27:54.233]you do have the right to defend yourself and attack back.
- [01:27:56.800]We don't want that to happen.
- [01:27:58.700]But another way to act
- [01:27:59.910]if you're not getting anywhere with somebody
- [01:28:01.600]and wanting them to do something is,
- [01:28:04.260]you know maybe you're gonna get help from a coworker
- [01:28:07.010]or you're gonna call security.
- [01:28:09.760]You're gonna maybe get the police.
- [01:28:12.030]And a lot of times when two people are working together
- [01:28:16.791]and you're interacting with somebody
- [01:28:19.210]and things are escalating
- [01:28:20.320]and you think you need to get that help
- [01:28:21.920]the supervisor, security or police,
- [01:28:24.500]a lot of departments around campus
- [01:28:25.867]and a lot of companies and corporations that I've taught
- [01:28:29.110]have a code word.
- [01:28:30.170]Because the person's right there
- [01:28:31.600]and you don't wanna, when they're already angry
- [01:28:33.280]you don't wanna say,
- [01:28:34.113]Hey, get the police, this person, right?
- [01:28:35.720]So they have a code word.
- [01:28:37.410]And a very popular code word with several departments
- [01:28:40.820]that I've trained here on campus over the years is,
- [01:28:43.230]can you get the red folder?
- [01:28:45.260]And that's the code word to go, whatever it is
- [01:28:47.440]to go call the supervisor,
- [01:28:48.670]to get the police,
- [01:28:49.503]whatever it is you think you need.
- [01:28:51.040]So having a code word is a good idea.
- [01:28:54.300]I had another group here on campus that came up with
- [01:28:56.670]can you get the CTP folder?
- [01:28:59.200]And I know we're not interacting
- [01:29:00.840]but just think for a minute
- [01:29:02.230]'cause I know that this is a very bright group.
- [01:29:04.390]The C-T-P folder.
- [01:29:07.890]Call the police.
- [01:29:09.550]So this is the five step.
- [01:29:11.940]And it's just so much about empathy and respect
- [01:29:15.210]and being on their side
- [01:29:16.570]and not wanting things to be worse for them.
- [01:29:18.290]That's the overall concept.
- [01:29:20.190]And it also, we understand that your tone of voice
- [01:29:23.080]and facial expressions,
- [01:29:24.400]which are hard to do with us these days.
- [01:29:27.840]But those things are important.
- [01:29:29.960]I'd like to start off and give a police example
- [01:29:33.320]and we'll get into others
- [01:29:34.170]but I'd like to start off and give a police example
- [01:29:37.070]of how this five-step would work
- [01:29:39.250]when I want to arrest somebody
- [01:29:41.480]because I have warrant for their arrest
- [01:29:43.890]and they don't wanna get arrested
- [01:29:45.570]but I want them to realize that getting arrested
- [01:29:48.030]for that warrant is probably the best option.
- [01:29:50.970]So this and Kathy, maybe you can help me on this.
- [01:29:54.610]This is where I usually get a volunteer for role-playing.
- [01:29:59.070]And--
- [01:30:00.780]Can we have somebody raise their hand?
- [01:30:02.240]Who wants to be a volunteer?
- [01:30:03.780]I'd like to be able to see their face too
- [01:30:05.180]not just like a letter.
- [01:30:07.020]I don't know if you can do that or not.
- [01:30:09.010]Okay, let me explain what you have to do.
- [01:30:10.780]So no matter what I say, here's your lines.
- [01:30:13.320]Pretty simple. Here's your lines.
- [01:30:14.810]No matter what I say, you say,
- [01:30:18.878]no, that's the whole line right there.
- [01:30:21.310]That's all you have to do.
- [01:30:23.170]So do I get a volunteer?
- [01:30:24.960]I bet everybody's raising their hand at once
- [01:30:26.650]just like in the classroom.
- [01:30:28.710]I have a volunteer.
- [01:30:30.620]Aaliyah.
- [01:30:32.540]Aaliyah, can you turn on your video?
- [01:30:34.940]Yeah. Yeah.
- [01:30:37.860]All right, who am I talking to
- [01:30:39.423]because I can't see a name?
- [01:30:40.530]Oh hi, I'm Aaliyah.
- [01:30:42.110]Let's see it now.
- [01:30:44.112]All right.
- [01:30:44.945]So are we seeing Aaliyah
- [01:30:45.778]and we're seeing me?
- [01:30:46.730]Because I don't know (mumbles)
- [01:30:47.563]Yes.
- [01:30:48.396]Okay.
- [01:30:49.240]You can see me...
- [01:30:50.073]Okay. Now I can see you, Kathy.
- [01:30:52.383]Oh okay.
- [01:30:55.393]I can see your picture.
- [01:30:56.270]Can you give me Aaliyah back?
- [01:31:01.820]I see you and Aaliyah.
- [01:31:03.110]I don't know. I can't control your screen.
- [01:31:06.622]Aaliyah just needs to talk.
- [01:31:08.773]Oh my gosh, that's this technology stuff is crazy.
- [01:31:12.180]All right. So here's the situation, Aaliyah.
- [01:31:14.750]I stopped you on a traffic stop
- [01:31:17.550]and I ran your name in my computer.
- [01:31:21.010]And I found out there's a warrant for your arrest.
- [01:31:24.630]And the warrant is for failure to appear on a traffic ticket
- [01:31:28.470]and the bond's $250 is what you have to come up with.
- [01:31:32.040]But you do not want to be arrested.
- [01:31:35.130]Okay.
- [01:31:36.130]So what we're gonna do is,
- [01:31:38.060]before I can place you under arrest
- [01:31:39.770]I have to ask you to step out of the car.
- [01:31:42.380]So are you ready to begin?
- [01:31:43.905]Mmhmm.
- [01:31:44.823]Okay.
- [01:31:45.656]So Aaliyah, I'm gonna ask you to step out of the car.
- [01:31:50.170]Here's the reason, here's the reason why.
- [01:31:52.330]I ran your name in the computer
- [01:31:53.810]and apparently you had a traffic ticket
- [01:31:56.510]and you forgot to go to court.
- [01:31:57.880]I know that happens.
- [01:31:58.770]Happens all the time.
- [01:32:00.060]Happened to my son once
- [01:32:01.740]but unfortunately what they do, is they do issue a warrant
- [01:32:04.220]that's it's a minor warrant.
- [01:32:05.760]You're gonna have to come up with $250,
- [01:32:10.730]get the bond taken care of,
- [01:32:11.930]get you out of here and get you on your way.
- [01:32:13.610]I'm sure you have other things you need to do tonight.
- [01:32:16.200]So, you know, minor warrant.
- [01:32:18.100]I'm just gonna ask you to please step out of the car.
- [01:32:20.980]No.
- [01:32:22.440]Good job.
- [01:32:24.283]Okay, so now I go into my options, right?
- [01:32:28.170]All right, so Aaliyah right now
- [01:32:30.560]all we have is a very minor warrant.
- [01:32:32.460]And you know, we can get you bonded out,
- [01:32:35.270]get you on your way.
- [01:32:36.190]It's not that big of a deal right now.
- [01:32:38.430]Unfortunately and I don't want this for you.
- [01:32:40.243]I definitely don't want this for you.
- [01:32:41.640]I don't want you to have to do this
- [01:32:42.880]but unfortunately if somebody refuses
- [01:32:45.430]and then they could be charged with resisting arrest.
- [01:32:49.510]Now resisting arrest is a bigger charge, right?
- [01:32:52.710]Resisting arrest is a bigger charge.
- [01:32:54.300]You're gonna have a higher fine
- [01:32:56.720]and you may not get to where you wanted to go tonight.
- [01:32:58.900]I'm sure you have things you wanna do tonight.
- [01:33:01.700]Actually, "The Cubs" are on right now.
- [01:33:03.220]Maybe you wanna get home and watch "The Cubs."
- [01:33:06.060]So right now, it's all we've got.
- [01:33:08.070]What do you think No.
- [01:33:09.296]To just step out of the car please?
- [01:33:11.530]Okay.
- [01:33:13.050]Aaliyah is there anything I can say
- [01:33:14.560]to gain your cooperation?
- [01:33:15.770]Because right now it is a very minor warrant
- [01:33:18.610]and we can get it taken care of very quickly.
- [01:33:21.180]And I don't wanna take that other route.
- [01:33:22.620]So is there anything I can say to gain your cooperation?
- [01:33:24.520]I'd like to think so. No.
- [01:33:27.470]Okay, so then what happens?
- [01:33:30.760]I call for backup and while my backups in route,
- [01:33:33.180]I'll keep talking to you
- [01:33:34.013]and maybe I'll talk you into getting out the car.
- [01:33:36.760]So that's the five step.
- [01:33:40.090]All right, Kathy, do your thing.
- [01:33:41.595]Oh Aaliyah, excellent job.
- [01:33:44.030]You get an A.
- [01:33:45.030]She's my A student (indistinct)
- [01:33:46.920]Thank you.
- [01:33:48.900]Very strong no.
- [01:33:52.480]It was. It was. Okay.
- [01:33:55.262]All right, so it's not gonna be exactly like that
- [01:33:57.980]for Wellness support associates.
- [01:33:59.680]When I was hearing Brian talk earlier
- [01:34:02.610]about if instructors have the right to
- [01:34:07.540]just dismiss the class and I was not aware of that.
- [01:34:11.150]What we could do in that situation when we get to options
- [01:34:13.810]we can explain to them that,
- [01:34:15.470]you know, let's say Brian's my student
- [01:34:17.300]and he's my troublemaker
- [01:34:18.730]and he's not one to wear his mask.
- [01:34:20.860]You know, Brian right now I'm just asking you
- [01:34:25.270]to go ahead and put that face covering on
- [01:34:27.270]because that's one of the rules
- [01:34:29.350]'cause we really wanna keep people safe on campus.
- [01:34:31.860]And you know, we can continue class.
- [01:34:34.620]I don't wanna have to dismiss class.
- [01:34:36.620]That's my other option.
- [01:34:37.860]And unfortunately also what's gonna happen is,
- [01:34:40.330]you're probably gonna be reported to student discipline.
- [01:34:42.990]And I don't want that for you.
- [01:34:45.260]I don't think you want that
- [01:34:46.427]but I can ask you just to put on your mask during the class
- [01:34:48.900]and then once class is over
- [01:34:50.500]you go outside and you can take it back off again.
- [01:34:52.210]So I can still give those kinds of options
- [01:34:55.500]because I know maybe we have some instructors in here,
- [01:34:57.870]if you wanna use those options.
- [01:34:59.400]We're always on their side.
- [01:35:00.280]We don't want that for them.
- [01:35:01.740]We don't want them to be disciplined.
- [01:35:03.140]We don't wanna have to dismiss the class.
- [01:35:05.110]So just kind of keep that in mind.
- [01:35:07.870]So this'll be more for the Wellness associates.
- [01:35:10.930]Can I minimize this thing here
- [01:35:12.000]so I can see the whole screen?
- [01:35:12.880]Nope, I can't.
- [01:35:14.430]All right. There we go.
- [01:35:15.460]All right, so this is gonna be a little different
- [01:35:17.190]'cause we're not gonna ask you to do that part
- [01:35:18.970]that I just explained for instructors.
- [01:35:20.880]So, you know, sir, can I ask you to put on your mask please?
- [01:35:27.810]And then you go right into the reason.
- [01:35:29.440]The university has a policy requiring wearing masks
- [01:35:32.220]in all campus facilities.
- [01:35:33.840]And the reason we have this policy is to keep everyone safe.
- [01:35:37.840]And then maybe they're not doing what you want.
- [01:35:40.600]I do wanna help you out.
- [01:35:41.460]I'm looking forward to helping you
- [01:35:44.186]but can you please step to the side
- [01:35:45.370]so I can get these other people in
- [01:35:47.130]so they're not all late for class
- [01:35:48.540]and I'll be right with you in just a little bit?
- [01:35:51.390]Is there anything else I can offer to help you comply
- [01:35:54.960]with what I'm asking you to do?
- [01:35:56.700]And if they say F you, I'm not a cusser.
- [01:36:00.330]So I assume you guys know what that means.
- [01:36:02.120]I'm going in.
- [01:36:04.280]You're gonna allow them to enter.
- [01:36:05.780]You're not a cop, you're not a bouncer.
- [01:36:08.240]We care about your safety.
- [01:36:10.010]And then of course you'll contact your supervisor
- [01:36:12.970]or whoever you need to contact
- [01:36:14.930]but you're not gonna put yourself in risk.
- [01:36:17.920]Okay, so that's kind of how it's gonna work
- [01:36:20.763]for the Wellness support associates.
- [01:36:23.390]Next slide please.
- [01:36:26.040]All right. So I'm proud of these little pictures actually.
- [01:36:29.460]So we need to remain under emotional control
- [01:36:32.260]during disagreements.
- [01:36:33.630]I know this is not easy.
- [01:36:35.590]I know if somebody's angry, it's not easy.
- [01:36:37.620]You might be scared.
- [01:36:38.650]You might be angry back.
- [01:36:40.660]You might be nervous.
- [01:36:41.710]You know, your palms are sweating and he's weak.
- [01:36:43.680]Arms are heavy vomit on her sweater already.
- [01:36:45.620]Mom's spaghetti.
- [01:36:46.453]I don't know.
- [01:36:47.538]It's all right.
- [01:36:48.371]So I told you I'd spit out some rhymes once in a while
- [01:36:49.920]but we have found that if we slow our breathing down,
- [01:36:54.700]slower talking down
- [01:36:57.270]and make sure...
- [01:36:58.150]Oh, somebody said that was pretty good.
- [01:37:00.330]I'll throw out some rap guide
- [01:37:01.540]for you after a while then.
- [01:37:02.373]All right. So if we find that
- [01:37:05.350]if we're breathing and slowly breathing
- [01:37:08.660]and actually maybe you can learn proper breathing techniques
- [01:37:12.070]through some mindfulness
- [01:37:14.010]or meditation things or stuff like this.
- [01:37:16.120]We know that it's scientifically proven
- [01:37:18.610]that when you do certain breathing techniques,
- [01:37:20.700]that it slows down your heart rate,
- [01:37:22.380]it reduces your blood pressure
- [01:37:23.690]and reduces the stress hormones in your body.
- [01:37:25.950]So just take a breath, make sure you're breathing
- [01:37:28.450]but I always recommend actually, you know
- [01:37:30.440]investigating yourself
- [01:37:31.630]and learn the specific breathing techniques.
- [01:37:35.580]Next slide please.
- [01:37:39.280]So professional face versus personal face.
- [01:37:43.010]We have to remain professional.
- [01:37:46.660]We cannot take things personal
- [01:37:49.660]because we have to remember who we're representing, right?
- [01:37:53.240]Who you're representing.
- [01:37:54.180]For me, I'm representing a lot of different things.
- [01:37:57.160]I'm representing the University of Illinois.
- [01:37:59.880]I'm representing the police training Institute.
- [01:38:03.050]I'm actually representing police all over the country
- [01:38:06.480]and just think for you, think about this.
- [01:38:08.570]I am representing the University of Illinois.
- [01:38:11.180]One of the most prestigious research institutes
- [01:38:14.540]in the world.
- [01:38:15.700]I need to remain professional
- [01:38:18.442]but you know what, I'm also representing me as a person
- [01:38:21.740]and I'm also representing my family.
- [01:38:24.190]And so if you can kind of keep those things in mind
- [01:38:26.410]that will help you keep you from saying
- [01:38:28.610]the things that you shouldn't say, right?
- [01:38:31.010]'Cause you don't wanna take things personal.
- [01:38:32.950]And you know what?
- [01:38:34.010]We don't have to take things personal
- [01:38:36.300]because even if they're saying things to you and about you
- [01:38:42.547]and they sound personal
- [01:38:44.580]and they're angry,
- [01:38:45.413]they're really not angry at you.
- [01:38:46.860]They probably don't even know you.
- [01:38:49.310]They're angry at the situation.
- [01:38:51.000]They're angry at themselves.
- [01:38:52.823]They're angry because they didn't do
- [01:38:54.940]what they were supposed to do.
- [01:38:56.270]And they're just angry.
- [01:38:59.260]But we cannot say those things
- [01:39:02.070]when we start feeling like
- [01:39:03.240]it's personal towards us
- [01:39:04.460]and it's different for different people.
- [01:39:06.210]Some people, it's yelling back at them.
- [01:39:08.740]Some people it's just...
- [01:39:10.470]I found that there are some people out there
- [01:39:12.620]that are really, really clever
- [01:39:15.700]and they can come back with the wisest
- [01:39:18.100]most (mumbles) comments back.
- [01:39:20.860]And that feels good too.
- [01:39:23.560]So we wanna make sure that we're not doing that.
- [01:39:26.830]And I know out of 142,
- [01:39:28.980]there's probably several of you
- [01:39:30.410]that had those awesome comebacks, right?
- [01:39:32.930]Boo-yah or whatever people say these days.
- [01:39:35.130]I don't know.
- [01:39:35.963]So we have a little saying, if it feels good, don't say it.
- [01:39:39.410]Keep that in the back of your mind.
- [01:39:40.520]If it feels good, don't say it,
- [01:39:42.890]remain professional.
- [01:39:44.240]Don't take things personal.
- [01:39:46.050]They're not mad at you.
- [01:39:47.640]Next slide please.
- [01:39:49.490]So here's some that people have sent me over the years.
- [01:39:54.240]Hey, I say, how about never?
- [01:39:56.260]Is that good for you?
- [01:39:57.390]Okay that's not a good one.
- [01:39:59.160]And this is one which will be tempting.
- [01:40:01.450]I see you've set aside this special time
- [01:40:03.490]to humiliate yourself in public.
- [01:40:05.730]Okay, feel good?
- [01:40:07.070]No, say.
- [01:40:08.330]All right, I'll try being nicer
- [01:40:10.610]if you try being more intelligent.
- [01:40:14.265]You know, I'd really like to help you out,
- [01:40:15.460]which way did you come in?
- [01:40:17.928]Have a nice day somewhere else.
- [01:40:20.120]And here's one of my son used to tell me,
- [01:40:22.110]Hey, dad, hear that?
- [01:40:23.440]That's the sound of no one caring.
- [01:40:25.700]So these are examples of feel good, don't say it.
- [01:40:28.981]So don't say it all right.
- [01:40:30.220]And when people feel disrespected
- [01:40:31.860]obviously it's gonna increase their anger.
- [01:40:34.230]Really, it's just...
- [01:40:36.920]Especially if they're in front of their friends, right?
- [01:40:40.390]If you start kind of a battle with somebody
- [01:40:42.610]kind of a back and forth with somebody
- [01:40:44.750]and you're disrespecting them
- [01:40:46.280]while they're angry at you
- [01:40:48.050]and their friends are around them
- [01:40:49.510]and you're treating them like that,
- [01:40:50.930]they're thinking you're not gonna treat me like that
- [01:40:54.590]in front of my friends.
- [01:40:56.510]I am going to have to build it up more
- [01:40:58.730]just to save face in front of my buddies.
- [01:41:01.240]So sometimes people will say things
- [01:41:04.030]and we can either de-escalate it
- [01:41:06.140]and stay professional or we can raise it.
- [01:41:09.520]And they're just gonna have to keep bringing it up
- [01:41:13.080]and bringing it up until things get really ugly.
- [01:41:16.560]Next slide.
- [01:41:25.750]Okay, so go ahead and answer this quiz.
- [01:41:29.730]If you want someone to do something,
- [01:41:30.970]would people rather be asked or told?
- [01:41:43.540]Okay I'm gonna give you five more seconds
- [01:41:45.600]to get credit for answering this question.
- [01:41:55.760]Okay and most people did say
- [01:41:58.700]they'd rather be asked than told
- [01:42:01.470]and that is the correct answer according to our video.
- [01:42:04.680]So Justi keep going.
- [01:42:09.190]Thank you.
- [01:42:10.100]All right, so we also need to be an active listener
- [01:42:12.680]because we found that even when people are angry,
- [01:42:15.310]even when people are saying
- [01:42:16.450]a lot of nasty things and cussing
- [01:42:18.880]and in between all those nasty things and cussing and anger
- [01:42:22.760]they're actually maybe saying things
- [01:42:25.150]that you can pick up on,
- [01:42:26.810]on why maybe they're really angry
- [01:42:29.950]or just certain sentences or things
- [01:42:32.090]where you could maybe build a conversation
- [01:42:34.520]and paraphrase things back to them.
- [01:42:36.500]So it sounds to me like this is what you're upset about
- [01:42:38.770]because I've been an active listener.
- [01:42:40.620]But the truth is inherently
- [01:42:44.230]most people are not good at listening.
- [01:42:47.390]Most people are simply waiting to talk and you know what?
- [01:42:51.080]You can test this on yourself.
- [01:42:52.140]Next time you're sitting around a table
- [01:42:53.590]or somewhere six feet apart
- [01:42:55.900]and you're talking to a group of your friends
- [01:42:58.210]and you're having a conversation about something
- [01:43:00.840]as soon as you think about that more brilliant thing
- [01:43:03.240]you're gonna add to that conversation,
- [01:43:05.210]you've stopped listening to them.
- [01:43:06.610]In fact, you might even interrupt them.
- [01:43:08.780]So it takes practice to be an active listener.
- [01:43:11.450]And those are good times to practice.
- [01:43:13.500]'Cause we wanna be able to hear what people are saying
- [01:43:15.970]so that we can maybe have a conversation with them
- [01:43:18.210]rather than just having to be angry all the time.
- [01:43:22.969]All right, so our goal is to generate
- [01:43:24.310]voluntary compliance cooperation and even collaboration.
- [01:43:28.530]And this is kind of where the saving face thing comes into
- [01:43:31.890]where you're allowing somebody to save face.
- [01:43:33.770]You know, there might be so the little rules of thumb
- [01:43:36.590]as long as you accomplish your goals
- [01:43:37.970]what they're saying doesn't really matter.
- [01:43:40.080]Say what you want, do what I say.
- [01:43:42.470]You can have the last word I have the last act.
- [01:43:45.320]They may be doing every single thing
- [01:43:47.200]that you have asked them to do
- [01:43:48.650]but they're still kind of mouthy.
- [01:43:50.900]But if they're complying, that's great.
- [01:43:53.020]They're complying.
- [01:43:53.853]It just doesn't sound like they're complying..
- [01:43:55.840]I've had people that I've arrested before that,
- [01:43:58.580]that said, you know Slaucer you short little bald, blah.
- [01:44:01.730]If you didn't have that gun and that badge
- [01:44:03.240]I'd kick your blah-blah-blah
- [01:44:04.570]while they're turning around
- [01:44:05.470]and putting their hands behind their back
- [01:44:07.310]and that is a cooperative person.
- [01:44:09.080]And I simply put the handcuffs on and say,
- [01:44:10.610]I believe you could, sir
- [01:44:11.620]and I appreciate your cooperation.
- [01:44:15.450]So, let them say what they want
- [01:44:17.010]as long as they're doing what you're asking.
- [01:44:19.290]So we also have what's called Anti-Peace Phrases.
- [01:44:21.370]And these Anti-Peace Phrases are (coughs) excuse me.
- [01:44:25.050]I have to stop smoking marijuana.
- [01:44:26.810]Hang on.
- [01:44:28.850]All right.
- [01:44:29.683]I'm kidding. Kidding.
- [01:44:31.180]All right, so one of the most common things
- [01:44:33.340]that people say when things get loud or ugly,
- [01:44:37.600]is they come up and they say calm down.
- [01:44:40.680]Well, that doesn't work.
- [01:44:43.030]And even if you said,
- [01:44:43.863]Hey, just calm down,
- [01:44:45.960]that doesn't work.
- [01:44:46.793]But it's almost like comes to our mind.
- [01:44:48.040]The first thing it's like, Hey, calm down.
- [01:44:50.460]You know, here's some others.
- [01:44:52.070]What's your problem?
- [01:44:54.270]And I hope you get this one.
- [01:44:55.490]You people.
- [01:44:57.670]Hey, come over here.
- [01:44:59.870]I'm not gonna tell you again.
- [01:45:02.160]And of course, when I listen to cops
- [01:45:03.390]they usually say it again.
- [01:45:05.260]Hey, because these are the rules.
- [01:45:06.910]That's the policy, that's the law.
- [01:45:09.570]And it doesn't mean you can't tell them what the policy is.
- [01:45:13.340]And no matter where you're working
- [01:45:15.070]if you know your policies
- [01:45:16.620]and you also know why the policies exist,
- [01:45:20.610]having that extra explanation
- [01:45:22.840]really can help de-escalate things.
- [01:45:24.620]So just kind of keep that in mind.
- [01:45:28.040]Other anti-peace phrases might be,
- [01:45:31.050]it's none of your business.
- [01:45:33.060]Why don't you just be reasonable?
- [01:45:35.530]And everybody that's unreasonable that I've dealt with
- [01:45:38.240]felt like they were being reasonable.
- [01:45:39.780]I've never had somebody come up and say,
- [01:45:41.000]Oh Mike, thanks.
- [01:45:41.890]I was unreasonable.
- [01:45:42.780]I really appreciate you telling me.
- [01:45:44.140]Now I'll be reasonable.
- [01:45:44.990]Thanks a lot.
- [01:45:45.823]Just as it's not gonna happen.
- [01:45:47.880]And here's another one,
- [01:45:48.713]you know what, you wouldn't understand.
- [01:45:50.720]And when you're telling people, you wouldn't understand
- [01:45:52.890]you're telling them they're stupid.
- [01:45:54.500]So you might as well finish your sentence.
- [01:45:56.400]You know what, you wouldn't understand
- [01:45:58.128]because you're really stupid.
- [01:45:59.570]All right.
- [01:46:00.736]And what do you want me to do about it?
- [01:46:02.240]I can't do anything about it.
- [01:46:03.540]So these are the things we don't wanna say in a nutshell.
- [01:46:07.300]All right.
- [01:46:08.133]So five-step very important.
- [01:46:10.070]We get that, right?
- [01:46:11.100]We wanna ask people
- [01:46:12.220]and explain things and give them options.
- [01:46:14.020]We wanna really work with them
- [01:46:15.290]and we're always on their side.
- [01:46:16.930]But we also have what's called,
- [01:46:17.870]deflection or empathy phrases.
- [01:46:19.750]They keep us from saying the things
- [01:46:21.033]that we shouldn't say.
- [01:46:23.820]They show empathy and they show respect.
- [01:46:27.060]Just by starting with these simple phrases,
- [01:46:30.190]it shows that we understand
- [01:46:31.830]and we can appreciate what they're saying.
- [01:46:33.710]So these again are examples that people have sent me
- [01:46:37.130]that they've picked up for their businesses.
- [01:46:38.700]Can you go back one for me?
- [01:46:40.967]All right.
- [01:46:41.900]Okay. So, you know, I hear what you're saying
- [01:46:44.300]but I'm asking you to wait in line
- [01:46:45.670]so I can be fair to the other people
- [01:46:47.500]who've been waiting longer than you.
- [01:46:49.690]I can appreciate what you're saying.
- [01:46:51.350]Well, we can get this accomplished a lot quicker
- [01:46:53.460]if we can get this form completed first
- [01:46:55.650]and I can even help you with it if you'd like.
- [01:46:58.510]I can see you're upset,
- [01:46:59.570]I'd probably be upset too.
- [01:47:01.120]And can you see how that empathizes with them?
- [01:47:03.120]It's like, I get it.
- [01:47:04.220]I would be upset too.
- [01:47:05.700]But the reason we have this policy
- [01:47:07.460]is because...
- [01:47:09.451]Next slide.
- [01:47:11.390]I understand how you feel
- [01:47:12.710]but in order to help you
- [01:47:13.800]and I do wanna help you.
- [01:47:15.360]So then again, not only do we understand how they feel
- [01:47:18.960]and we do wanna help them.
- [01:47:19.893]They need to know that.
- [01:47:22.060]I understand that but in order to resolve a situation
- [01:47:24.470]I think the best route to take is...
- [01:47:27.460]I hadn't thought about that
- [01:47:28.350]and I can understand where you're coming from.
- [01:47:29.810]You know, I'll bring that up to my supervisor
- [01:47:31.610]but let's see what I can do for you today.
- [01:47:33.207]I'd like to be able to assist you now rather than waiting.
- [01:47:36.070]And a supervisor sent me that one.
- [01:47:38.350]'Cause they kept getting called for everything.
- [01:47:39.970]So next slide please.
- [01:47:42.020]All right. So here's something a little more relevant
- [01:47:43.890]to the Wellness support associates.
- [01:47:46.850]Hey, I tested negative. What's up?
- [01:47:49.380]You very well may have tested negative
- [01:47:51.610]but we can only go by what the app is telling us.
- [01:47:54.060]You know, here's a phone number to call
- [01:47:55.600]for more information.
- [01:47:56.970]But I can't afford to miss class.
- [01:47:59.200]Okay, I understand your frustration
- [01:48:01.400]but we have to adhere to the campus's policies
- [01:48:04.350]and not allowing people in
- [01:48:05.520]that have a denied status on their app or boarding pass.
- [01:48:10.790]But I've already tested two times this week.
- [01:48:13.470]What's up?
- [01:48:15.070]All right, I'm sorry.
- [01:48:16.180]And I'm certainly not doubting you.
- [01:48:17.677]And I think that's important.
- [01:48:18.950]I'm not doubting you.
- [01:48:19.870]I believe you, right?
- [01:48:21.130]Please understand that we'll only allow access
- [01:48:23.230]based on the status of your app or boarding pass.
- [01:48:25.880]You know, this is ridiculous.
- [01:48:26.930]I said, I tested two times this week.
- [01:48:29.050]I've done what is required.
- [01:48:31.200]I can understand you being upset.
- [01:48:33.120]I would be too.
- [01:48:34.210]Please allow me to help you by giving you the number
- [01:48:36.490]for the Wellness answer center to troubleshoot this issue
- [01:48:39.000]'cause I really don't want this to happen to you again.
- [01:48:40.900]So let's see if we can get this resolved
- [01:48:42.120]so that this doesn't happen to you in the future, okay?
- [01:48:50.710]Hey. Excuse me?
- [01:48:52.391](indistinct)
- [01:48:54.400]What?
- [01:48:55.233]Can you stop singing?
- [01:48:56.070]You're really loud.
- [01:48:57.376](indistinct)
- [01:48:59.190]Yeah, maybe your type is bothering me.
- [01:49:00.841]Do you want me to get somebody?
- [01:49:01.674]You need to get a lot of people.
- [01:49:03.142](indistinct)
- [01:49:04.408]No, that's fine.
- [01:49:05.270]That's fine.
- [01:49:06.128]That's fine.
- [01:49:12.000]He's screaming.
- [01:49:14.175](indistinct)
- [01:49:17.288]Okay, I'll talk to him.
- [01:49:18.382]You wanna step outside for a minute?
- [01:49:19.772]I'll just step outside 'cause I need...
- [01:49:21.174]Like for 20 minutes.
- [01:49:22.320]What?
- [01:49:23.600]Take off your headphones.
- [01:49:24.840]Yeah.
- [01:49:25.673]Couple things
- [01:49:26.959](indistinct)
- [01:49:32.820]I understand that you obviously want to use computers too.
- [01:49:35.710]However (indistinct)
- [01:49:36.730]you have to respect other people's wishes
- [01:49:39.760]when they are also using them.
- [01:49:41.519]I didn't say nothing to him.
- [01:49:42.476]I never said nothing to him.
- [01:49:44.903]You are also not allowed to have water by the computers.
- [01:49:47.510]It's got a lid on it.
- [01:49:48.530](indistinct)
- [01:49:49.660]I don't see no signs anywhere.
- [01:49:50.870]There's a post and sign on the door.
- [01:49:53.345]I'm supposed to read all the signs now?
- [01:49:55.371]Yes, if you are going to use our facilities
- [01:49:57.688]you need to respect all the rules in here.
- [01:49:59.500]One is respecting other people here.
- [01:50:01.590]All right, it's on the floor now, there.
- [01:50:03.897](indistinct)
- [01:50:12.250]Obviously you do not want to comply
- [01:50:14.120]with what I'm asking you.
- [01:50:14.953]No, this guy has a problem.
- [01:50:16.468](indistinct)
- [01:50:19.180]I ain't doing nothing wrong, man.
- [01:50:22.820]Put the water on the floor.
- [01:50:24.370]That should be good enough.
- [01:50:26.959](indistinct)
- [01:50:32.410]Excuse me, sir.
- [01:50:34.648]Sir.
- [01:50:35.710]Excuse me, sir.
- [01:50:36.543]What?
- [01:50:37.376]Can you take these off for a second?
- [01:50:38.209]Thank you.
- [01:50:39.042]Now what?
- [01:50:39.875](indistinct) I'm security in this building.
- [01:50:42.060]Where's your hat?
- [01:50:43.280]Don't have a hat.
- [01:50:44.113]They don't make us wear hats.
- [01:50:45.867]I tell you what,
- [01:50:46.720]from what I understand
- [01:50:47.790]the management here has asked you to leave.
- [01:50:50.910]Why are they asking me to leave?
- [01:50:52.159](indistinct)
- [01:50:53.840]From what I understand,
- [01:50:55.370]management asks you to leave
- [01:50:56.800]and you're gonna have to leave.
- [01:50:58.190]Why?
- [01:50:59.023]I got every right to be here.
- [01:51:00.030]I didn't cause him problems.
- [01:51:01.200]I still have my water on the counter there.
- [01:51:03.140]I put it over here.
- [01:51:03.973]It's out of harm's way now.
- [01:51:05.390]So everything's good.
- [01:51:06.630]Okay, I understand you've been asked to leave.
- [01:51:08.660]I can see you're upset and I can appreciate that.
- [01:51:10.710]And what we're gonna have to do
- [01:51:11.801]is we're gonna have to take care of this tomorrow.
- [01:51:14.760](indistinct)
- [01:51:16.304]Yeah, you guys wait till tomorrow.
- [01:51:17.250]I'll be here.
- [01:51:18.360]But sir? What?
- [01:51:19.950]You are gonna have to leave.
- [01:51:21.995](indistinct)
- [01:51:23.280]I don't have to leave.
- [01:51:24.113]This is a public place.
- [01:51:25.090]I can be here.
- [01:51:25.923]I have an i-card.
- [01:51:26.756]I can stand in here.
- [01:51:27.860]I can be at this computer.
- [01:51:29.060]I'm a student here.
- [01:51:29.900]Where else am I supposed to go?
- [01:51:31.340]Well, here's our next step.
- [01:51:33.227]And I don't wanna do this.
- [01:51:34.127]And I don't think you want this either
- [01:51:35.110]but if you refuse to leave
- [01:51:37.440]I'm gonna have to get the police department here and--
- [01:51:42.234]They ain't gonna do nothing for me typing on a computer.
- [01:51:45.235]Good luck.
- [01:51:46.160](indistinct)
- [01:51:48.683]Okay, so just let me...
- [01:51:49.516]Before I do, I don't wanna have to do that.
- [01:51:50.700]And here's why.
- [01:51:52.289]And here's why,
- [01:51:53.122]if I call the police and they come
- [01:51:54.670]and they find out that management has asked you to leave
- [01:51:56.907]and you refused to leave
- [01:51:58.570]and then I asked you to leave
- [01:52:00.000]and you refuse to leave
- [01:52:01.253]then they're probably going to arrest you for trespassing.
- [01:52:04.820]Yeah and what happens there
- [01:52:05.653]is if you get arrested for trespassing,
- [01:52:07.870]you're gonna have to go down
- [01:52:08.760]to the police department.
- [01:52:09.790]You're gonna have to (indistinct)
- [01:52:11.060]You're gonna have to come up with bond
- [01:52:12.450]and that is probably gonna be something
- [01:52:13.890]that's gonna be on your record.
- [01:52:15.090]I don't want that for you at all.
- [01:52:16.900]This guy was the--
- [01:52:18.602]I understand these things happen sometimes.
- [01:52:19.680]It's not my fault he types one word a minute.
- [01:52:22.725]And I understand these things happen.
- [01:52:23.960]I can see you're upset.
- [01:52:24.840]I would be too.
- [01:52:26.000]But when it comes down to the manager asking you to leave
- [01:52:28.899]and then I ask you to leave and that doesn't happen,
- [01:52:31.420]I have to go to that next step.
- [01:52:32.920]And unfortunately that next step
- [01:52:34.270]means that you are likely to be arrested.
- [01:52:36.670]And I really don't want that to happen.
- [01:52:38.497]So can I just ask you to leave
- [01:52:39.447]can I get some cooperation from you today, sir?
- [01:52:42.810]All right.
- [01:52:43.919]I don't wanna go to jail.
- [01:52:44.937](indistinct)
- [01:52:46.450]And I don't want you to go to jail either.
- [01:52:47.450]This guy, he's the problem, man.
- [01:52:49.932]You need to tell him the same thing.
- [01:52:51.442](indistinct)
- [01:52:57.538]It was just water.
- [01:52:58.371]I mean, I wasn't gonna spill it.
- [01:53:04.930]All right, so hopefully
- [01:53:06.860]when you were listening to that,
- [01:53:07.930]you could hear the five-step.
- [01:53:09.790]Asking, explaining why, presenting the options.
- [01:53:13.080]I'm on his side.
- [01:53:14.090]I don't want that for him.
- [01:53:15.670]I didn't take anything personal.
- [01:53:17.804]And there were a lot of different deflection
- [01:53:20.130]or empathy phrases in there.
- [01:53:22.420]And here's just some other language to use.
- [01:53:24.730]And these are just basically manners.
- [01:53:28.200]We're just gonna be polite to people.
- [01:53:29.810]We're gonna use manners, you know,
- [01:53:31.430]please and thank you
- [01:53:32.510]and things like that.
- [01:53:34.300]Somebody said, I would say she shouldn't have touched him.
- [01:53:36.900]And I would have 100% agreed
- [01:53:39.020]like as a Wellness support associate
- [01:53:40.630]you should never ever put your hands on anyone.
- [01:53:43.300]Yeah, she was not the one doing the five-step Iowa.
- [01:53:48.430]So yeah, she should not have done that.
- [01:53:51.240]And that's a good thing to bring up.
- [01:53:52.510]Whoever brought that up gets an A
- [01:53:54.670]and Kathy, you do too, since you agree
- [01:53:56.190]and probably everybody else.
- [01:53:57.270]But just kind of pay attention to my part there
- [01:53:59.807]'cause I don't know.
- [01:54:05.950]Okay, so our next quiz
- [01:54:08.780]and Justi you should have this up in a second.
- [01:54:10.560]Which one of these is an example
- [01:54:11.950]of a deflection empathy phrase.
- [01:54:14.250]What's your problem?
- [01:54:15.150]I understand how you feel
- [01:54:16.640]or calm down.
- [01:54:18.390]While you guys are answering that,
- [01:54:19.640]I just wanna point out that it is 11:30.
- [01:54:22.660]You guys were really great with asking questions
- [01:54:24.820]but that means we're gonna end up running
- [01:54:26.340]about five or 10 minutes over.
- [01:54:28.860]We are almost done
- [01:54:30.100]but if you have something that you need to do right at 11:30
- [01:54:33.700]feel free to leave.
- [01:54:35.590]That is absolutely fine.
- [01:54:37.230]We will send out the link to the video when it is posted.
- [01:54:40.430]And you can finish up that training in another time.
- [01:54:44.820]But we are within five or 10 minutes being done.
- [01:54:48.841]Justi do you wanna show the results?
- [01:54:51.910]So that everybody except for one person said,
- [01:54:54.810]I understand how you feel.
- [01:54:56.854]That is correct.
- [01:54:58.210]Calm down, no matter how nicely you say that
- [01:55:01.380]can end up escalating the situation.
- [01:55:06.790]So let's keep going.
- [01:55:09.770]All right, so when we approach somebody,
- [01:55:12.876]they probably, if you're Wellness associates,
- [01:55:14.910]they probably (mumbles) sport associates.
- [01:55:19.701]You've got your t-shirt on
- [01:55:20.534]that you can introduce yourself if you need to.
- [01:55:22.670]They know that you have the authority to help them out.
- [01:55:25.780]And the ability to have some authority on that.
- [01:55:31.282]And if possible, take them aside.
- [01:55:32.930]And then if you have somebody you're working with
- [01:55:35.270]sometimes just another person approaching
- [01:55:38.270]and even if you're doing an excellent job
- [01:55:40.090]of your deescalation skills
- [01:55:41.830]and you're not building a rapport with them,
- [01:55:43.580]sometimes a second person coming up
- [01:55:45.820]and that second person comes up and starts talking
- [01:55:48.630]and for some reason they develop a rapport,
- [01:55:51.400]just let the other person talk to them.
- [01:55:55.160]That's good on that.
- [01:55:57.360]All right, so we do need to know
- [01:55:58.600]when it's time to stop talking.
- [01:56:00.000]We use our common sense, right?
- [01:56:02.220]We can skip to step number five at any time.
- [01:56:05.430]If things are so serious,
- [01:56:07.500]I'm not gonna ask you to go through the five step.
- [01:56:10.470]Just think of me as an officer.
- [01:56:11.860]I'm down on the ground
- [01:56:12.740]and somebody's punching me in the face.
- [01:56:14.080]I'm not gonna say,
- [01:56:14.960]sir, I'm gonna ask you to stop punching me in the face.
- [01:56:17.240]The reason is, it really hurts.
- [01:56:18.610]We have some options here, right?
- [01:56:20.380]Use your common sense.
- [01:56:21.340]If you feel like you're gonna be in danger
- [01:56:23.640]or it's completely out of hand
- [01:56:25.860]then you get help.
- [01:56:28.270]You get help right away
- [01:56:29.470]or you get out of there.
- [01:56:31.010]And we know that as a Wellness support associate
- [01:56:34.080]your job is, if they say, Nope, I'm going in.
- [01:56:37.230]Nothing you can do to stop me.
- [01:56:38.730]You're not a bouncer.
- [01:56:39.830]You're not a cop.
- [01:56:41.250]Let him in and call your supervisor.
- [01:56:49.350]All right.
- [01:56:50.500]If you feel unsafe and an interaction feels threatening
- [01:56:53.900]you can attack first.
- [01:56:55.510]You can threaten back or you can walk away.
- [01:56:58.390]What is it?
- [01:57:13.053]Okay and absolutely everybody said walk away.
- [01:57:16.080]So very good.
- [01:57:18.300]And we will finish up the video.
- [01:57:23.960]Next please.
- [01:57:26.960]All right so one of my first instructors
- [01:57:29.920]when de-escalation started back in the late 80s.
- [01:57:32.220]His name was Dr.George Thompson
- [01:57:34.480]and it's called verbal judo.
- [01:57:37.877]And before he passed away,
- [01:57:39.570]he came up with what he calls the five universal truths.
- [01:57:43.460]And he said, Mike, it would be great
- [01:57:45.430]if we could all learn about all the people
- [01:57:48.000]that are different than us
- [01:57:48.920]to different cultures,
- [01:57:49.753]different backgrounds and upbringings and things like that.
- [01:57:52.360]And learn...
- [01:57:53.193]The more we learn the better, right?
- [01:57:55.350]But you know, instead of focusing
- [01:57:56.770]on how people are different,
- [01:57:58.300]we should focus on how people are the same.
- [01:58:00.880]And here's his five universal truths.
- [01:58:03.340]All people wanna be treated with dignity and respect.
- [01:58:06.730]All people wanna be asked rather than told to do something.
- [01:58:10.760]All people wanna be told
- [01:58:11.990]why they're being asked to do something.
- [01:58:14.750]All people wanna be given options, not threats
- [01:58:18.230]and all people want a second chance.
- [01:58:19.830]And many people do deserve a second chance.
- [01:58:25.400]And if it feels good,
- [01:58:27.340]everybody say it even though I can't hear you.
- [01:58:28.940]If it feels good?
- [01:58:33.830]Okay and Justi you can...
- [01:58:35.080]Great. Thank you.
- [01:58:36.320]So if it feels good, don't say it, right?
- [01:58:40.660]It might make you feel better
- [01:58:42.040]but it's really, really, really not gonna help.
- [01:58:44.600]So that is all that we had for you today.
- [01:58:48.410]I can take a few more questions.
- [01:58:50.250]Julie, did you have anything you wanted to say
- [01:58:52.340]to end here or Michael?
- [01:58:58.110]You guys are good?
- [01:58:59.192]All right, are there any more questions?
- [01:59:02.500]No questions in the chat, Judy.
- [01:59:04.550]Okay, so five minutes over, not too bad.
- [01:59:08.060]Thank you all for staying till the end.
- [01:59:10.940]And you are now ready to be Wellness Attendants
- [01:59:13.880]once we tell you when we need you and where we need you.
- [01:59:17.450]We will get to you just as soon as we can.
- [01:59:20.370]Thank you very much.
- [01:59:21.800]Have a great rest of your day.
- [01:59:24.250]Thank you all.
