- [00:00:16.710]The internship program, the best part about it is
- [00:00:19.150]you don't have to be born on a ranch.
- [00:00:21.010]And then, work in a feed yard,
- [00:00:22.930]and then do the internship program.
- [00:00:24.380]You don't have to even have ever walked
- [00:00:26.980]into a pen of cattle with cattle before,
- [00:00:29.590]if you want to be in the internship program.
- [00:00:31.960]Really this is about the only program of its kind
- [00:00:35.800]that's very unique just to feed yards, and very specialized.
- [00:00:39.470]I don't really know of any other programs like it.
- [00:00:42.030]If you have a feed yard interest
- [00:00:43.750]and you have a feed yard management career goal
- [00:00:46.500]you should come to the University Nebraska,
- [00:00:47.990]do our feed yard management internship program.
- [00:00:50.200]We've had students from 15 to 20 other states
- [00:00:54.790]and we've worked with approximately 50 feed yards,
- [00:00:58.370]mostly from Nebraska, there's been a few out of state
- [00:01:01.320]and approximately 175 interns
- [00:01:03.580]that have completed the program over the last 20, 30 years.
- [00:01:06.930]This is a great program and a great way
- [00:01:08.410]for you to get into agriculture
- [00:01:10.350]kind of get your foot in the door
- [00:01:11.880]and learn a lot of skills that either you can continue
- [00:01:13.880]on at the feed yard you're at, or take them somewhere else.
- [00:01:16.190]After the internship, at least in the short term,
- [00:01:18.400]I've agreed to continue working
- [00:01:19.640]at Niewohner Feedyard, where I am right now.
- [00:01:22.160]So, I'd like to continue in the feed yard industry for now.
- [00:01:24.683]If you're interested all in feed lots,
- [00:01:26.950]and working with feed lots for any part of your career
- [00:01:30.150]it's definitely a good program to at least look into.
- [00:01:33.130]But definitely going to help you in that regard
- [00:01:35.550]not only learning the ins and outs of feedlots
- [00:01:38.030]but making context definitely for your future career as well
- [00:01:40.770]The program was set up really to be threefold.
- [00:01:44.350]The first session, which is six weeks,
- [00:01:46.500]is spent in class with us, and we cover all kinds
- [00:01:49.210]of topics like nutrition, health, management,
- [00:01:52.620]economics, environmental issues, and probably
- [00:01:55.060]the most important aspect is personnel management.
- [00:01:57.910]Then, they spend a four month period
- [00:01:59.820]in a feed yard that we've set up
- [00:02:01.960]that fits their needs and their goals.
- [00:02:04.230]And then, they have some excellent work experiences,
- [00:02:06.850]hopefully, doing all the jobs in the feed yard.
- [00:02:09.030]And then, the last section's coming back
- [00:02:10.850]on the campus for two weeks and they get to teach us.
- [00:02:13.320]I'm really glad I decided to do this.
- [00:02:15.160]To me, this internship provided a great opportunity
- [00:02:17.680]to get experience in the feed yard.
- [00:02:19.520]I've really enjoyed this program so far.
- [00:02:22.190]Even if I wouldn't continue at the feed yard
- [00:02:24.323]I think this would've been a super valuable experience.
- [00:02:26.900]I've learned a lot of skills that I think can transfer
- [00:02:28.990]to a lot of different areas in agriculture.
- [00:02:31.600]What a tremendous opportunity to bring them in,
- [00:02:34.620]get them some experience, let them decide
- [00:02:37.060]if that's what they want to do.
- [00:02:38.810]And then, I mean, there's a huge industry out there
- [00:02:41.630]for them to go out, get a job and have a big impact in.
- [00:02:45.550]That's probably one of the most rewarding parts of this is,
- [00:02:48.890]you know, watching someone come, very little experience
- [00:02:52.330]and then go be successful in the industry.
