- [00:00:04.370]Hello, I'm Richard Moberly, the dean of your alma mater,
- [00:00:08.140]University of Nebraska College of Law.
- [00:00:11.400]As we kick off 2021,
- [00:00:12.930]we begin the implementation of our strategic plan.
- [00:00:16.340]It's something that was delayed
- [00:00:17.680]by my service during the 2019/2020 academic year
- [00:00:21.150]as UNL's interim executive vice chancellor,
- [00:00:23.580]and then of course, by the COVID pandemic.
- [00:00:27.180]As we end the chapter entitled 2020,
- [00:00:29.700]we've already begun to write the next
- [00:00:31.660]and it's a chapter that I hope will be a remarkable one.
- [00:00:35.090]To get started, it's my pleasure to finally officially share
- [00:00:38.820]with you Nebraska Law's mission statement.
- [00:00:42.130]We develop inclusive leaders who advance justice,
- [00:00:45.880]solve problems, and serve with integrity.
- [00:00:50.420]I hope that you see yourself reflected back
- [00:00:52.480]to you in this intentionally concise statement.
- [00:00:55.420]As you can imagine, each word was chosen carefully.
- [00:00:59.210]One way to think of this mission is to understand
- [00:01:01.310]that we wanted to address the basic questions
- [00:01:03.390]you should ask of any organization;
- [00:01:05.300]the who, the why, the what, and the how.
- [00:01:09.000]The who, it's our people;
- [00:01:11.160]our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
- [00:01:14.000]Who are they and who are they becoming?
- [00:01:16.430]Our goal is for them to become inclusive leaders.
- [00:01:20.450]The why, the overarching emphasis is on advancing justice,
- [00:01:24.710]that large idealistic North Star
- [00:01:26.730]of every action we take at Nebraska Law.
- [00:01:29.340]Why are we doing this work?
- [00:01:31.120]To advance justice throughout our society.
- [00:01:34.450]The what, we advance justice by solving problems,
- [00:01:38.180]big thorny societal policy problems,
- [00:01:40.980]and nuanced, meaningful individual legal problems.
- [00:01:44.780]We do it through representing clients,
- [00:01:46.890]through legal research and scholarship,
- [00:01:49.020]and through teaching how to think critically,
- [00:01:51.440]reason analytically, and persuade effectively.
- [00:01:55.810]The how, how will we do this work?
- [00:01:59.160]It must be done ethically and with integrity
- [00:02:01.730]or it isn't worth doing.
- [00:02:03.610]We're building on the work of generations
- [00:02:05.590]of Nebraska lawyers who took the ethical high ground
- [00:02:08.460]and did their work the right way, the Nebraska way.
- [00:02:12.760]In alignment with our mission, we developed core values
- [00:02:15.530]that serve as a daily reminder
- [00:02:17.360]for how we will live and accomplish our mission.
- [00:02:20.770]In fact, we took it so far as to physically add them
- [00:02:23.280]to the walls of the building,
- [00:02:24.770]each classroom representing a different value.
- [00:02:26.979]At Nebraska Law, we think creatively, listen graciously,
- [00:02:31.760]speak thoughtfully, value diversity, build community,
- [00:02:36.300]serve humbly, act courageously,
- [00:02:39.260]work hard, and demand excellence.
- [00:02:42.400]I talk about these values all the time
- [00:02:44.370]with our faculty, alumni, and students.
- [00:02:47.130]I hope you see in these values the ideals
- [00:02:49.600]that I know have guided each of you in your lives,
- [00:02:53.010]practices, and business
- [00:02:55.160]since you graduated from the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:58.660]I am proud of our Nebraska Law community
- [00:03:00.990]and the impact we have across the state and the nation
- [00:03:04.730]and I'm excited about the future of our college
- [00:03:06.960]and the work that we'll do to better ourselves
- [00:03:09.880]and deepen that impact.
- [00:03:11.690]We have specific plans and commitments
- [00:03:13.750]to fulfill our mission and live our values.
- [00:03:16.250]I encourage you to take a look
- [00:03:17.710]at what we have planned by visiting this website.
- [00:03:21.170]Also, I will regularly report to you
- [00:03:23.720]how we are doing on these plans
- [00:03:25.600]so that we will hold ourselves accountable publicly
- [00:03:28.060]to you and to our students.
- [00:03:30.550]I know we will make you proud to be an alumnus
- [00:03:33.240]of the University of Nebraska College of Law.
- [00:03:36.750]I hope you all have a wonderful start to 2021
- [00:03:39.680]and I wish you the best in the new year.
