- [00:00:05.160]My name is Lance Perez,
- [00:00:06.370]and I'm the Dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:09.110]College of Engineering.
- [00:00:10.600]A Big 10 College of Engineering.
- [00:00:13.120]I welcome you to this webpage and this content,
- [00:00:15.200]and I hope that you'll take the time
- [00:00:16.430]to learn about the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:18.700]the College of Engineering,
- [00:00:20.040]the city of Lincoln, and the state of Nebraska.
- [00:00:22.850]We are a wonderful community of faculty,
- [00:00:24.590]staff, and students, and I sincerely hope
- [00:00:26.710]that you'll be interested in joining us.
- [00:00:28.281](engine roaring)
- [00:00:31.520]As a Big 10 College of Engineering,
- [00:00:33.240]we are deeply committed
- [00:00:34.240]to engineering education and research.
- [00:00:36.790]A distinctive feature of engineering
- [00:00:38.550]at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:40.040]is our Complete Engineer program.
- [00:00:42.460]This program seeks to develop
- [00:00:43.980]six competencies in our students
- [00:00:46.200]that give our students a competitive advantage
- [00:00:48.180]when they graduate and enter the workplace.
- [00:00:50.320]Engineering isn't just about problem-solving,
- [00:00:53.030]it's also about teamwork, communication skills.
- [00:00:56.020]So we're training engineers
- [00:00:57.290]in a more holistic way here at Nebraska.
- [00:00:59.650]And when I talk to our alums,
- [00:01:00.920]I say, "What's the most challenging part of your job?"
- [00:01:03.690]And they always say, "Working on teams."
- [00:01:05.860]The Complete Engineer really gives our graduates
- [00:01:08.770]a step up when they go out into the workplace.
- [00:01:11.221](hammer pounding)
- [00:01:13.340]One of the major initiatives that we have going
- [00:01:15.420]in the College of Engineering at Nebraska,
- [00:01:17.800]is nearly $200 million worth of facilities investments.
- [00:01:21.770]One of these projects, a $75-million project,
- [00:01:24.600]is building a brand new 87,000 square foot,
- [00:01:27.500]state-of-the-art research building.
- [00:01:29.530]And it is also renovating
- [00:01:30.840]another 100,000 square feet of research space.
- [00:01:34.260]We are also planning a brand new
- [00:01:36.100]engineering building called Kiewit Hall.
- [00:01:38.690]This building is 180,000 square feet
- [00:01:41.410]and is dedicated to our education mission.
- [00:01:43.960]It will be opening in the fall of 2023,
- [00:01:46.760]and will be one of the best
- [00:01:47.810]engineering buildings in the country.
- [00:01:49.790]I guess to me as a student,
- [00:01:51.170]this building is really the physical,
- [00:01:53.540]like tangible manifestation
- [00:01:55.530]of the investment and the commitment
- [00:01:57.040]that this community really has for us as the students.
- [00:02:00.560]My research group is focused on material innovations,
- [00:02:04.810]and then we are really interested about
- [00:02:06.630]fascinating nanoscale, phentermine, and polymeric materials.
- [00:02:09.800]So in this new facility, we're gonna have
- [00:02:12.240]a-state-of-the art lab with dedicated lab space
- [00:02:14.980]for our weight chemistry and material characterization.
- [00:02:17.933]Another very exciting initiative that is currently ongoing
- [00:02:21.100]in the College of Engineering
- [00:02:22.500]is the creation of a school of computing.
- [00:02:25.370]Backed by a major investment from the chancellor's office,
- [00:02:28.440]we are elevating computing across the college
- [00:02:30.810]and across the university.
- [00:02:32.560]This includes major investments in our faculty in computing
- [00:02:35.420]and strengthening our research areas in data science,
- [00:02:38.230]Artificial Intelligence, drones, and robotics.
- [00:02:41.857](engine buzzing)
- [00:02:44.140]Part of our efforts to transform the College of Engineering
- [00:02:46.620]has been a major faculty hiring initiative.
- [00:02:49.240]This includes hiring over 48 new faculty
- [00:02:51.710]in the last five years.
- [00:02:53.370]These new professors are doing outstanding research
- [00:02:56.060]and education, and are winning major national awards,
- [00:02:59.070]like National Science Foundation CAREER Awards,
- [00:03:01.400]and Young Investigator Awards.
- [00:03:03.330]I decided to come to Nebraska
- [00:03:04.620]because it's a really supportive environment.
- [00:03:07.550]There are great core facilities,
- [00:03:09.150]and they're making a big investment
- [00:03:10.880]in research facilities in general here.
- [00:03:12.960]A very important value in the College of Engineering
- [00:03:15.020]and Nebraska is the emphasis we put
- [00:03:17.240]on graduate student development.
- [00:03:19.600]They are a part of our community and a critical part
- [00:03:22.020]of our research and education enterprise.
- [00:03:24.045](buildings exploding)
- [00:03:28.670]We are very excited about what's happening
- [00:03:30.400]in the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:03:33.160]and I sincerely hope you'll consider joining us.
- [00:03:35.750]You'll be joining a fantastic community
- [00:03:38.330]of faculty, staff, and students,
- [00:03:40.550]and Lincoln and Omaha are two of the best cities
- [00:03:42.770]to live in in the United States.
- [00:03:44.880]I hope to see you soon, and go Big Red.
