- [00:00:00.189](drum beat)
- [00:00:02.400]Welcome back, Canada KickOff here
- [00:00:03.840]on the Husker Sport Zone's,
- [00:00:05.010]Nebraska set to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights
- [00:00:07.980]later today here in Piscataway,
- [00:00:09.770]and as we do each and every week
- [00:00:10.790]a chance to catch up with the chancellor
- [00:00:12.900]from the university of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green
- [00:00:15.470]and always great to have you here with us.
- [00:00:17.590]Did you ever think you could see Nebraska play
- [00:00:19.300]in a conference football game this late into December?
- [00:00:23.910]Well, you know, what do you think?
- [00:00:26.938](laughing)
- [00:00:27.771]There's nothing that's been normal about 2020.
- [00:00:31.700]And as we go into the Christmas season, I hear,
- [00:00:33.960]I guess we should just keep that up
- [00:00:36.300]and realize that here we are in New Brunswick,
- [00:00:39.410]New Jersey for our team to be playing against Rutgers,
- [00:00:42.550]the Friday before the Christmas holiday
- [00:00:45.880](chuckling)
- [00:00:46.713]in the final game of the Big Ten season if you will,
- [00:00:51.840]I'll just kind of play off structure
- [00:00:53.640]that was put in place between
- [00:00:55.410]the East and the West divisions.
- [00:00:57.720]It's very fortunate, you know, if you look back now over
- [00:01:00.630]the fall and the fits and spurts that we had to go
- [00:01:05.390]through to get to a football season,
- [00:01:07.380]it's been pretty fortunate to get eight of our nine
- [00:01:09.720]games played that were scheduled this season done,
- [00:01:13.330]and that here we are back with our crossover team.
- [00:01:15.750]You know in the end,
- [00:01:16.973]that we would have had in our original schedule
- [00:01:20.640]we were slated as I think all of our,
- [00:01:22.870]our fan base knows the play Rutgers
- [00:01:26.520]in our original schedule this year.
- [00:01:28.370]So great to have that opportunity for the Big Ten to be
- [00:01:32.580]in the spotlight this weekend with all of these
- [00:01:35.350]kind of play off or match up games,
- [00:01:38.069]at the end of the season,
- [00:01:39.500]we just hope we'll finish strong here.
- [00:01:41.230]I'm confident in our team is focused
- [00:01:43.550]on playing their best and building momentum going forward.
- [00:01:46.790]Yep, looking forward to the game.
- [00:01:48.170]Well, not only do we have the game today
- [00:01:49.770]but you've got a big weekend,
- [00:01:50.830]you've got December graduation tomorrow
- [00:01:53.210]and I know it's been a challenge to do a lot
- [00:01:56.080]of things here in 2020, putting on graduation ceremonies,
- [00:01:59.900]but in some ways it'll make it special.
- [00:02:01.950]Talk about some of the challenges you've had
- [00:02:03.800]with this particular event here in 2020
- [00:02:06.880]Well, you know Greg, we graduate three times a year,
- [00:02:09.470]our big commencement in May, we have a summer commencement
- [00:02:12.760]as well and then a December commencement.
- [00:02:15.040]And we will confer about 1400 degrees tomorrow
- [00:02:20.810]to our graduates, our undergraduates,
- [00:02:23.180]our graduate students graduating with masters
- [00:02:25.810]and doctoral degrees and a few professional degrees
- [00:02:29.150]also graduate in December.
- [00:02:32.230]It's a wonderful tradition at Nebraska.
- [00:02:34.510]And even though we've had kind of interruptions
- [00:02:37.230]this year with the COVID pandemic,
- [00:02:40.510]we've tried to maintain a celebratory nature
- [00:02:43.240]around our commencement.
- [00:02:44.540]So even though we can't do live commencement exercises,
- [00:02:48.220]celebrating with our graduates
- [00:02:49.770]and their families around the world
- [00:02:51.560]and to celebrate this huge life moment
- [00:02:53.900]for them as they finished their career at Nebraska.
- [00:02:57.580]It's also really significant me.
- [00:03:00.270]I happened to be a first generation educated student
- [00:03:03.250]in my family.
- [00:03:04.740]First under my family had the opportunity
- [00:03:07.390]to obtain a college education.
- [00:03:09.650]So it's, no matter who it is and what it is
- [00:03:12.363]it's a special thing to me.
- [00:03:14.460]When we confer our university degrees on our graduants.
- [00:03:19.280]It's a life changing opportunity for our students.
- [00:03:21.970]I'm tremendously proud of our 2020 graduates,
- [00:03:25.610]how they've overcome these very unexpected
- [00:03:28.120]and unprecedented challenges that they've had
- [00:03:31.010]at the end of their college career in
- [00:03:32.980]this global pandemic time.
- [00:03:34.890]So proud of them, and we'll be celebrating
- [00:03:38.130]with them on tomorrow morning in an online
- [00:03:42.390]kind of graduation celebration with them and their families.
- [00:03:45.673]Fantastic, and you're gonna be the host.
- [00:03:47.420]You're gonna be fantastic,
- [00:03:48.670]and you have a very special guest.
- [00:03:51.560]What can you reveal to us?
- [00:03:55.020]Well Greg, you know we made the decision
- [00:03:57.320]back in May when we did this the first time this way
- [00:03:59.890]that even though our graduates couldn't be there live
- [00:04:02.500]and in person and walk up the stage to get their diplomas,
- [00:04:05.990]part of that big Nebraska tradition
- [00:04:08.070]that we would have a celebration online
- [00:04:10.540]with them and their families.
- [00:04:12.490]And I'm really, really pleased that we kinda have
- [00:04:16.462]a major thing for our December graduates.
- [00:04:21.250]We were able to have a conversation
- [00:04:23.530]with perhaps our most famous alumni, Warren Buffett,
- [00:04:28.290]the Berkshire Hathaway Warren Buffett
- [00:04:30.210]that we all know and love
- [00:04:32.750]who is a 1951 alumni of UNL.
- [00:04:37.580]He's probably the greatest investor
- [00:04:39.870]that's ever been known in the world.
- [00:04:41.860]One of the greatest business leaders of all time
- [00:04:44.080]in the world and a huge Husker fan.
- [00:04:46.620]As well I know Warren has plans today.
- [00:04:50.220]I know exactly where he will be
- [00:04:52.170]and who he will be with, as he has taking in
- [00:04:55.320]the Huskers taking on Rutgers this afternoon,
- [00:04:57.950]so a huge Husker fan.
- [00:04:58.987]And we set it up to be able to communicate with him online,
- [00:05:05.800]and we had about a 15 minute conversation
- [00:05:08.830]about his affinity for the university,
- [00:05:11.790]his roots with the university, both he and his parents.
- [00:05:15.860]His parents actually met at
- [00:05:17.530]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:05:20.190]We talked about his career.
- [00:05:21.930]We talked about what the university
- [00:05:23.790]had done for him in his life.
- [00:05:27.480]And then he offered quite a bit
- [00:05:29.740]of wisdom and guidance for our graduates.
- [00:05:32.990]It's just a really special thing to be able to
- [00:05:36.230]have that conversation with Warren
- [00:05:37.980]and then to be able to share it
- [00:05:39.890]with our graduates and their families tomorrow
- [00:05:42.450]is gonna be just really really special.
- [00:05:45.000]So tomorrow morning, nine o'clock
- [00:05:47.980]the graduation celebration will be live stream.
- [00:05:51.085]If you wanna watch what Warren has to say
- [00:05:53.790]with our graduates, you can go to unl.edu
- [00:05:57.660]and find the live stream there to be able to tap into.
- [00:06:00.480]It's exciting, looking forward to tomorrow and celebrating
- [00:06:03.130]with our graduates as they join our now
- [00:06:05.710]over 300,000 alumni of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:06:10.680]Fantastic, congratulations to every single one of them,
- [00:06:13.670]they survived college through a pandemic.
- [00:06:16.680]They'll be able to tell that story
- [00:06:17.870]for the rest of their lives.
- [00:06:19.300]Chancellor, we appreciate it.
- [00:06:20.490]Thank you so much.
- [00:06:21.323]It's such a pleasure to have you on
- [00:06:22.700]each and every week before the games.
- [00:06:24.470]Enjoy this one today and let's get this one
- [00:06:26.800]in the win column.
- [00:06:28.277]Absolutely right, go big red.
- [00:06:30.960]Ronnie Green with us here on countdown to kickoff.
- [00:06:33.190]Matt Courtney will come up next.
