- [00:00:12.280]Welcome back everyone,
- [00:00:13.630]to the Nebraska Soybean Day and Machinery Expo.
- [00:00:17.940]Minus the machinery this year due to the pandemic,
- [00:00:21.810]we're doing our Expo and Soybean Day live, virtually.
- [00:00:26.690]So welcome if you were not able to join us this morning,
- [00:00:30.130]my name is Keith Glewen, Extension Educator, located here,
- [00:00:33.620]at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center.
- [00:00:37.180]I'd like to share with you a few items right now.
- [00:00:43.130]Give me a second here.
- [00:00:47.105]I cannot find them.
- [00:00:48.020]So, where did they go?
- [00:01:07.660]Bear with me folks.
- [00:01:11.070]Technology in it's fineness.
- [00:01:13.600]There they are.
- [00:01:17.650]Okay.
- [00:01:21.350]I'm pleased to share with you individuals,
- [00:01:26.570]who are behind the scenes,
- [00:01:29.210]and they make a lot of our extension programs successful,
- [00:01:33.340]and they make us look good,
- [00:01:34.550]and I can't thank them enough for their support.
- [00:01:40.010]Eric Bark is located on our campus,
- [00:01:43.400]and he's the man who sets up the zoom information's,
- [00:01:49.310]and invitation and so forth.
- [00:01:51.820]And Mark Christian is an IT specialist,
- [00:01:54.550]here at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center.
- [00:01:58.090]And he's been in viewing all day today,
- [00:02:01.810]and I think he'd rather be fishing somewhere else,
- [00:02:08.070]rather being at work.
- [00:02:09.210]But there you can see, he's got a nice fish,
- [00:02:12.440]but Mark does an exceptional job,
- [00:02:16.080]in helping us out with the technical aspects.
- [00:02:18.930]Cheryl Dunbar is our Office Manager here.
- [00:02:21.450]And Cheryl in the past,
- [00:02:24.210]has been at the fairgrounds, over the course of the years,
- [00:02:27.960]working with the Saunders County Soybean Growers,
- [00:02:30.760]and making sure all you guys had (indistinct) doughnuts,
- [00:02:34.760]and pancakes, and food,
- [00:02:36.560]and taking care of registration and so forth.
- [00:02:40.130]And then on Deloris Pittman, on the far right there,
- [00:02:46.758]she is actively involved,
- [00:02:48.670]with our Marketing and Promotions,
- [00:02:51.630]and she's located here,
- [00:02:53.250]at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center.
- [00:02:56.260]And we thank her for all her work,
- [00:02:59.150]in communicating with media,
- [00:03:01.990]and getting the word out about our educational programs.
- [00:03:07.320]They all do a great job.
- [00:03:09.060]So thank you very much for the team effort.
- [00:03:14.500]Again today's program, is being sponsored in part,
- [00:03:18.380]by the Nebraska Soybean Board,
- [00:03:23.240]and Nebraska Extension,
- [00:03:25.740]as well as the Saunders County Soybean Growers Organization.
- [00:03:29.870]And here you can see a slide,
- [00:03:34.000]of our Saunders County Soybean Grower Directors.
- [00:03:37.020]Now, a bunch of farmers got together back in the '80s
- [00:03:40.870]and they decided to start a Soybean Growers Organization...
- [00:03:50.540]And I need, okay.
- [00:03:52.240]And so our group has been affiliated,
- [00:03:56.040]with Nebraska Soybean Association,
- [00:03:58.490]since the early '80s
- [00:04:00.780]and they have term limits.
- [00:04:02.870]And after serving your term,
- [00:04:05.550]we find new directors.
- [00:04:06.770]And I need to compliment these people,
- [00:04:10.710]because they've been of great help,
- [00:04:13.130]in conducting this educational program as well as others.
- [00:04:18.460]Of course during the pandemic,
- [00:04:19.830]their efforts have been put to a halt almost,
- [00:04:23.440]but we know that in the months and years ahead,
- [00:04:26.900]that they'll become very active again.
- [00:04:29.770]Also like to recognize (indistinct)
- [00:04:34.180]Local farm operator Soybean Growers, Doug Bartek,
- [00:04:38.840]who is a Director,
- [00:04:40.180]for the Nebraska Soybean Association District Five.
- [00:04:43.150]And then Dennis Fujan, whom you're gonna hear from shortly,
- [00:04:47.550]is a director or serving as an ungoverned committee,
- [00:04:51.100]for the American Soybean Association.
- [00:04:53.380]So, again we thank them for their efforts.
- [00:04:59.740]Okay.
- [00:05:01.450]Moving on here, I want to...
- [00:05:08.640]Let's see here.
- [00:05:10.450]I need to bring up another slide.
- [00:05:29.100]Hi, I'm Dennis Fujan,
- [00:05:30.870]with the Nebraska Soybean Association.
- [00:05:33.620]I'm also one of two directors,
- [00:05:35.380]from Nebraska on the American Soybean Association.
- [00:05:39.270]I currently serve, as an at-large member,
- [00:05:42.140]on the governing committee,
- [00:05:43.680]as well as on the Farm Policy Advocacy team
- [00:05:47.020]and the Soy PAC Committee.
- [00:05:49.240]Thank you for tuning in today to the virtual format,
- [00:05:52.100]for the Nebraska Soybean Expo,
- [00:05:54.610]rather than our in-person gathering,
- [00:05:56.900]that we normally have, at the Saunders County Fairgrounds.
- [00:06:00.180]This has been a tough year for everyone as you know,
- [00:06:02.960]and we're all trying to adapt,
- [00:06:05.610]even us old guys like myself and Keith Glewen,
- [00:06:08.010]are trying to make the best of it.
- [00:06:11.030]Keith has put together a real good program for you.
- [00:06:13.610]And so thank you Keith, for putting this together,
- [00:06:15.860]and thanks to all who gave you an assist.
- [00:06:18.680]Yeah, American Soybean Association,
- [00:06:20.420]held their annual meeting virtually December 9th and 10th.
- [00:06:24.087]And I was elected to serve,
- [00:06:25.430]on the governing committee at that time.
- [00:06:29.020]A lot of the issues that we're looking at right now,
- [00:06:31.340]are especially with the new administration coming in,
- [00:06:33.590]to the White House,
- [00:06:34.970]we're going to be having a new Ag Secretary,
- [00:06:38.010]appears that it's going to be Tom Vilsack,
- [00:06:40.090]who served in that position for eight years,
- [00:06:43.900]in the Obama administration.
- [00:06:46.140]So we're going to be getting reacquainted with him,
- [00:06:48.780]and his staff as well.
- [00:06:51.110]We're monitoring all new appointments at USDA,
- [00:06:54.260]and so now,
- [00:06:55.093]we gonna have to get established relationship with them,
- [00:06:57.710]and their staff too.
- [00:07:00.070]The House in Senate,
- [00:07:00.950]are going to be voting on new leadership positions,
- [00:07:04.250]that should be done after the 1st of the year.
- [00:07:07.730]The Senate Ag Chair retiring is Pat Roberts from Kansas,
- [00:07:14.090]and the new chair appears to be John Boozman,
- [00:07:16.890]a Republican from Arkansas.
- [00:07:19.260]Now that could change, with a runoff election,
- [00:07:23.450]that is scheduled to happen January 5th in Georgia.
- [00:07:27.200]There's two Senate seats there, both held by Republicans,
- [00:07:30.560]and if the Republicans should retain,
- [00:07:32.960]either one or both of those seats,
- [00:07:35.400]then the Republicans will retain control,
- [00:07:37.720]of leadership positions in Senate.
- [00:07:40.330]But if they should lose both of those seats,
- [00:07:42.020]that would make a 50/50 split,
- [00:07:44.290]in seats held by Democrats and Republicans in the Senate.
- [00:07:48.170]And with the Vice President holding the typical vote,
- [00:07:53.370]then the chairmanships should go to Democrats.
- [00:07:58.780]Also the House Ag chair,
- [00:08:01.020]Colin Peterson from, Democrat from Minnesota,
- [00:08:05.770]who was defeated this last election.
- [00:08:07.920]So now the new chair probably will be Debbie Stabenow,
- [00:08:11.390]from North Dakota.
- [00:08:14.080]As I said, all this,
- [00:08:15.950]in the Senate, is going to hinge,
- [00:08:17.620]on whether or not,
- [00:08:19.050]the Republican is gonna retain control.
- [00:08:22.120]In Nebraska, the legislature,
- [00:08:23.970]is due to begin their session in January 6th.
- [00:08:27.870]There's a few new senators,
- [00:08:29.220]that we're going to get to...
- [00:08:30.370]Need to get to know.
- [00:08:31.580]So that's part of our duties.
- [00:08:35.780]Some of the priorities again,
- [00:08:36.960]are going to be property taxes.
- [00:08:38.930]As you know, we got some relief last year,
- [00:08:41.490]but, I think that was just a start.
- [00:08:43.830]I think everybody would agree that that was just a start.
- [00:08:45.950]So we're gonna be back to property taxes,
- [00:08:48.830]and funding for education reform.
- [00:08:53.340]There needs to be a new way to fund schools,
- [00:08:56.920]rather than just from property taxes.
- [00:08:59.480]Internet access.
- [00:09:00.770]Rural broadband is a huge issue.
- [00:09:02.650]And we found that out,
- [00:09:04.790]just these last few months,
- [00:09:06.280]with the virtual learning going on,
- [00:09:09.690]kids need access to rural broadband,
- [00:09:12.050]people with their businesses need access to rural broadband.
- [00:09:16.210]I found it interesting,
- [00:09:17.320]that we had had a speaker last week,
- [00:09:19.530]by the name of Liam Condon.
- [00:09:22.520]And he's the President of Bayer Crop Sciences,
- [00:09:25.770]as well as Board of Management Director at Bayer AG.
- [00:09:31.680]And he said that,
- [00:09:32.530]many underdeveloped countries in the world,
- [00:09:34.750]have better access to broadband,
- [00:09:36.780]than we do in the United States.
- [00:09:38.510]So we've got a huge job to do there,
- [00:09:41.170]to try to get up to speed on broadband.
- [00:09:46.720]I wanna emphasize,
- [00:09:48.360]that we can't do any of this policy work,
- [00:09:50.110]without your support.
- [00:09:51.150]And by that support I mean your membership.
- [00:09:54.550]We need your dollars to make...
- [00:09:56.160]To be able to do our work.
- [00:09:58.930]I've said it before, but I'll say it again,
- [00:10:00.860]the checkoff money cannot be used for this policy work,
- [00:10:04.640]and so we need your membership dollars.
- [00:10:09.860]When prices are depressed,
- [00:10:11.130]membership is more important than ever.
- [00:10:14.460]NSA is again,
- [00:10:17.410]they have a free seed bonus,
- [00:10:18.860]with three year membership.
- [00:10:20.610]There's 12 companies,
- [00:10:21.660]seed companies participating in this.
- [00:10:24.290]And, if you would like to join,
- [00:10:26.410]I'd urge you to call Nebraska Soybean Association
- [00:10:29.080]at 402-441-3239 and join.
- [00:10:35.010]Thanks again to Keith Glewen and the extension staff,
- [00:10:38.320]the Saunders County Soybean Growers,
- [00:10:40.460]and the Nebraska Soybean Board,
- [00:10:42.260]and the Nebraska Soybean Association.
- [00:10:44.840]I'm Dennis Fujan,
- [00:10:45.710]I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas, a happy new year.
- [00:10:48.570]Stay healthy and stay safe.
- [00:10:50.450]Thank you.
- [00:10:52.900]Thank you again, Dennis.
- [00:10:54.260]And thank you to Nebraska Soybean Association.
- [00:10:57.940]So I wanted to bring to your attention,
- [00:11:01.040]while I'm on the crop watch page,
- [00:11:04.140]you can scroll down, and on the side here,
- [00:11:07.440]are the virtual field day tours.
- [00:11:09.810]And many of you, in fact we've had...
- [00:11:13.620]Last time I looked, we were approaching 1000 video heads,
- [00:11:18.640]of growers going to this,
- [00:11:22.350]and checking out the different presentations,
- [00:11:29.230]that we did virtually this past summer,
- [00:11:31.660]at one of our locations.
- [00:11:33.700]And you can go on there and watch.
- [00:11:34.980]The videos are short,
- [00:11:36.350]they're usually anywhere as from five,
- [00:11:39.460]to maybe 15-20 minutes the longest I think,
- [00:11:43.440]but most of them are probably in that 10, 12 minute range.
- [00:11:47.340]And you can watch these videos,
- [00:11:50.820]on all these different topics,
- [00:11:52.330]by our faculty who participated in that.
- [00:11:55.310]You can download The Field Days,
- [00:11:58.890]a growers booklet virtually,
- [00:12:02.500]and read through that,
- [00:12:04.380]when the snow (indistinct) ,
- [00:12:06.090]and so I bring that to your attention.
- [00:12:08.290]Now, as you know, we had an incentive,
- [00:12:12.160]for you to do that prior to the day, and that was,
- [00:12:15.440]if you watched one of these video segments,
- [00:12:18.250]then, and you completed an evaluation,
- [00:12:21.650]then your name went into the hat,
- [00:12:24.340]for a drawing compliments in the Nebraska Soybean Board.
- [00:12:28.490]And that those prizes are a Yeti Cooler,
- [00:12:33.180]and $200 worth of Pork,
- [00:12:36.100]and also some Carhartt jackets,
- [00:12:37.870]and some high-oleic soy grease.
- [00:12:39.470]So with that, I'm going to turn my screen,
- [00:12:44.420]over to Scott Ritzman, who is Executive Director.
- [00:12:51.320]And Scott is going to share with us,
- [00:12:54.430]who the winner might...
- [00:12:55.360]Who the winners are.
- [00:13:11.160]All right Keith, can you see my screen?
- [00:13:12.680]I see your screen you're coming in loud and clear Scott.
- [00:13:17.640]Okay.
- [00:13:19.340]So thanks Keith.
- [00:13:20.790]I'm Scott Ritzman,
- [00:13:21.623]the Executive Director of the Nebraska Soybean Board.
- [00:13:23.610]I wanna thank everyone who viewed,
- [00:13:25.140]our Soybean (indistinct) Field Days videos,
- [00:13:27.020]that were produced this year.
- [00:13:28.710]Like today's Nebraska Soybean Day Machinery Expo,
- [00:13:31.920]we wish we could have held it in person,
- [00:13:33.940]but we had to do what was in the best interest,
- [00:13:35.730]of all our producers.
- [00:13:37.500]We look forward to going back to Hildreth,
- [00:13:39.340]Elgin, Shelby in Arlington in 2021,
- [00:13:42.910]for the Soybean manual build days.
- [00:13:45.390]With that, I'd like to announce,
- [00:13:46.750]the winners of the giveaways.
- [00:13:49.200]I'll start with the winner of the grand prize,
- [00:13:51.200]which is a Yeti Cooler,
- [00:13:52.790]filled with $200 worth of Nebraska assorted Pork.
- [00:13:56.850]And the winner of the grand prize is Dwight Dam.
- [00:14:01.010]Congratulations Dwight.
- [00:14:03.834](clapping)
- [00:14:09.310]Next I'd like to announce the four winners,
- [00:14:10.930]of the Carhatt jackets,
- [00:14:11.960]with the Nebraska Soybean Board logo on them,
- [00:14:14.397]and a box of 10 high-oleic soybean oil,
- [00:14:17.370]multipurpose grease tubes.
- [00:14:19.660]The four winners of the giveaway,
- [00:14:23.850]are John Oehlerking,
- [00:14:27.040]Keith Gillham, Adam Sidlo,
- [00:14:30.820]and Rob Meyer.
- [00:14:32.480]Congratulations to all of you on winning these prizes.
- [00:14:35.538](clapping)
- [00:14:36.450]The soybean office will be in contact,
- [00:14:38.020]with the winners to get their prizes.
- [00:14:39.670]Again, congratulations to the winners.
- [00:14:41.950]We want to thank everyone who viewed,
- [00:14:44.120]the Soybean Management Field Days videos,
- [00:14:45.950]and completed the surveys.
- [00:14:47.700]On behalf of the Nebraska Soybean Board.
- [00:14:49.830]We wanna thank you for attending, and doing the videos,
- [00:14:52.060]of the virtual Soybean Field Days.
- [00:14:54.620]And we look forward to seeing everyone next year.
- [00:15:02.499](bright upbeat music)
- [00:15:04.960]Welcome,
- [00:15:05.793]to the 2020 Nebraska Soybean Day and Machinery Expo.
- [00:15:10.070]I'm Richard Bartek, I represent district three,
- [00:15:13.210]Nebraska Soybean Board the Checkoff.
- [00:15:15.500]This event is part of a Nebraska Checkoff dollars,
- [00:15:19.460]being invested.
- [00:15:20.470]The checkoff involves four different areas,
- [00:15:23.910]generally in research, international marketing,
- [00:15:27.370]domestic marketing, and consumer and producer education.
- [00:15:31.480]And this is one of an events,
- [00:15:33.060]that falls into the last category there.
- [00:15:35.240]But, in addition to that,
- [00:15:37.300]we sponsor Soybean Management Days,
- [00:15:40.650]which is a very good research program with...
- [00:15:46.360]Invested by the checkoff dollars.
- [00:15:48.150]We do the Cover Crop Program,
- [00:15:50.530]usually held at the Pan Rec Center in Wheat Nebraska.
- [00:15:54.380]So those are just a few of the events that we sponsor,
- [00:15:58.700]of Machinery Expo.
- [00:16:00.670]It's an excellent opportunity for Soybean Producers,
- [00:16:03.830]to listen to speakers.
- [00:16:05.700]And, a lot of these involved problems,
- [00:16:08.230]that happen in Nebraska,
