- [00:00:00.294](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.780]And we're back here on Canada, kickoff Huskers
- [00:00:04.790]today set to take on the Purdue Boilermakers.
- [00:00:07.220]And as we do each and every week, a chance to catch up
- [00:00:09.230]with the chancellor, from the university of Nebraska,
- [00:00:11.130]Lincoln Ronnie Green, and getting ready for some football
- [00:00:13.760]action here today.
- [00:00:14.650]But I know you've recently received some good news
- [00:00:16.870]chancellor about Nebraska student athletes
- [00:00:19.260]and their performance
- [00:00:20.151]in the classroom, how the Husker's has been doing
- [00:00:24.522][chancellor Ronnie Green] Well, Greg,
- [00:00:25.355]it is a great to be back
- [00:00:26.570]in West Lafayette today and have the chance to play the
- [00:00:29.270]Birdie Boilermakers and been great to see our
- [00:00:31.520]basketball team, off to a great start in the men's team
- [00:00:35.210]and these few games that they've been able to get
- [00:00:37.440]under their belt and great to see our athletes competing
- [00:00:41.070]and not only on the field or on the court
- [00:00:44.130]but also competing nationally, academically.
- [00:00:48.100]We received really good news in Husker athletics here.
- [00:00:51.260]A few weeks ago, I went the graduation success rates
- [00:00:55.060]were published by the NCAA for this past year.
- [00:00:58.890]And for the eighth year in a row
- [00:01:01.219]Husker athletics has achieved its highest
- [00:01:04.190]all student athlete great puts us
- [00:01:07.120]as the third highest public institution
- [00:01:09.970]in the power five schools on the national scale.
- [00:01:13.580]In that statistic and tied
- [00:01:15.850]for second in the big 10, only behind Northwestern.
- [00:01:19.560]So very pleased with that result for our student athletes
- [00:01:23.550]13 of our athletic team programs that feed the
- [00:01:27.270]perfect 100% graduation success rate span
- [00:01:31.860]in basketball, gymnastics, tennis rifle, cough, software
- [00:01:36.290]softball, swimming, and diving and volleyballs.
- [00:01:40.226]So very, very proud of them.
- [00:01:42.910]Our women's basketball, women's tennis
- [00:01:45.250]and volleyball teams have had a perfect GSR in each
- [00:01:49.170]of the 16 years that it's been computed by the NCAA.
- [00:01:53.430]So a great hallmark of achievement for all of those teams.
- [00:01:58.230]The GSR actually what it measures.
- [00:02:01.020]It allows for a six year window
- [00:02:03.210]in which a student athlete can earn his
- [00:02:05.490]or her degree from the time they start competition.
- [00:02:09.367]And just could, can't be prouder of our student athletes
- [00:02:13.640]and our teams for their success in the classroom
- [00:02:16.642]as well as on the field, on the court and in the arena.
- [00:02:20.407][Presenter] Oh, that's fantastic.
- [00:02:21.240]Thank you so much for sharing that with us.
- [00:02:23.010]Well, the university also received some good news recently
- [00:02:26.090]about four faculty members.
- [00:02:27.820]Who've been recognized by their scientific peers
- [00:02:30.820]around the world for their work, who are these members
- [00:02:34.300]and receiving these prestigious honors when one of the
- [00:02:36.810]all that mean chancellor for the university?
- [00:02:40.079][chancellor Ronnie Green] Well, one of Greg, one
- [00:02:41.570]of the things that we've seen a real increase
- [00:02:43.690]in at the university of Nebraska in recent years
- [00:02:45.990]I was just reviewing this past week.
- [00:02:47.680]This year's release of data
- [00:02:50.350]for universities all across the country.
- [00:02:52.620]And one of the things we've been recognized
- [00:02:54.490]for in recent years is the increase
- [00:02:56.900]in our number of national and international recognitions
- [00:03:00.870]of our faculty and the quality of those faculty.
- [00:03:03.940]And one of the biggest awards that a faculty member
- [00:03:07.000]in the sciences can achieve is to be named a fellow
- [00:03:10.820]of the American association for the advancement of science
- [00:03:14.010]but the national and the US
- [00:03:16.203]and the leading international organization
- [00:03:19.480]of scientists across all disciplines, about 1%
- [00:03:24.960]of the AAA's members or scientists
- [00:03:27.740]across the U S are ultimately named a fellow of the society.
- [00:03:33.560]This year,
- [00:03:34.393]UNL was very proud of the fact
- [00:03:36.950]that four of our faculty helping named AAAS fellows
- [00:03:40.830]in recognition of the stature of their work collectively,
- [00:03:45.242]they include Craig Allen, who is a professor
- [00:03:48.570]in our school of natural resources
- [00:03:50.820]on the colleges or it's in the area of resilience,
- [00:03:53.370]and natural environments was the former director
- [00:03:56.770]of our US fish and wildlife cooperative research unit
- [00:04:00.460]on the campus and is now in the faculty
- [00:04:03.410]of the school of natural resources, a rock, the swab
- [00:04:07.640]who is a professor of agronomy and horticulture
- [00:04:10.040]in our Institute of ag and natural resources, a turf grass
- [00:04:15.100]scientists he's established his career
- [00:04:16.870]and expertise in that area.
- [00:04:19.480]He also was the former head for a number of years
- [00:04:23.090]of Ark bark department of agronomy and horticulture
- [00:04:25.750]the largest department of any department
- [00:04:27.920]across all of the university of Nebraska.
- [00:04:30.930]He also was president
- [00:04:32.040]of the crop science society of America a few years ago
- [00:04:35.100]highly recognized by his peers, Kristen Olson, a professor
- [00:04:39.810]in our sociology department isle well-known internationally
- [00:04:43.356]in the area of survey research methodology
- [00:04:46.354]as the director of our Bureau of survey research
- [00:04:51.000]the towels out of our department of sociology.
- [00:04:53.470]So being recognized for her contributions in that field
- [00:04:57.130]and Tim Cocottes, who is a longtime professor
- [00:04:59.780]of chemistry and our department of chemistry and the college
- [00:05:02.490]of arts and sciences for his distinguished contributions
- [00:05:06.210]to synthetic organic chemistry.
- [00:05:08.640]Jim also is currently the leader
- [00:05:11.250]of one of our biggest research projects
- [00:05:14.138]on campus in bowel molecular signaling and communication.
- [00:05:18.730]So congratulations to these four
- [00:05:21.750]they join additional faculty who had been named
- [00:05:24.120]over the past number of years
- [00:05:26.500]as AAAS fellows actually had the honor
- [00:05:29.820]of myself with begin being named five years ago
- [00:05:32.710]to that and have a special place
- [00:05:34.610]in my heart for what that recognition means
- [00:05:38.450]to our faculty and to their statures.
- [00:05:41.150]So congratulations to Craig, Rob, Kristin
- [00:05:44.360]and Jim on this big honor.
- [00:05:46.560]Oh, that's fantastic.
- [00:05:47.610]Congratulations. All four of them.
- [00:05:49.300]and that is awesome for them.
- [00:05:50.930]and in gray reflects greatly
- [00:05:52.560]on the university.
- [00:05:53.460]Well chancellor it's only right,
- [00:05:55.580]that in the corn Husker state
- [00:05:56.620]the land university is a leading researcher
- [00:05:59.300]in all things corn.
- [00:06:00.950]So tell us what is the latest research study showing
- [00:06:03.220]about potential improvements in corn breeding?
- [00:06:07.718][chancellor Ronnie Green] Well, you know,
- [00:06:09.092]we have had a long history at the university
- [00:06:12.120]of Nebraska going way back to our founder, but 18, mid 18
- [00:06:16.550]late 18 hundreds in the area of agronomy and crop science.
- [00:06:21.232]And a lot of that has been centered
- [00:06:24.050]over the years and corn breeding or bays breeding
- [00:06:27.400]as it's known in the scientific fields.
- [00:06:30.314]Recently, one of our, our professors out
- [00:06:34.540]of the department of agronomy and horticulture
- [00:06:36.980]Gin Lang Yon published work that was important
- [00:06:41.440]in this field where they were able to identify how
- [00:06:45.989]genes have been turned on and off between ancient corn.
- [00:06:50.110]Corn actually was originated 9,000 years ago
- [00:06:54.130]and Southern Mexico, and has evolved and has been bred
- [00:06:58.250]over the years since to
- [00:07:00.240]to dramatically improve its productivity and this discovery
- [00:07:04.770]of how these deans have been regulated
- [00:07:06.880]and changed between ancient corn
- [00:07:09.410]and current current varieties and strains of corn
- [00:07:15.242]give us insight into how we can speed that process up.
- [00:07:20.030]So without going too deep into the science that the big deal
- [00:07:23.210]and Dr Young's work that was recently published is
- [00:07:26.862]is an outstanding example of the
- [00:07:29.614]the level of research that happens at your university.
- [00:07:33.700]And we're very proud of that
- [00:07:35.270]proud of the work that they're doing
- [00:07:36.620]and what that will lead to our ability to even
- [00:07:39.170]further improve corn and others, other crops, species
- [00:07:43.540]into the future to help feed the world that is around.
- [00:07:46.915]Oh, fantastic.
- [00:07:47.870]What a great update chancellor.
- [00:07:49.030]Thank you so much.
- [00:07:49.880]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:07:51.020]We'll talk next week back in Lincoln.
- [00:07:53.775][chancellor Ronnie Green] You bet.
- [00:07:54.608]And go big red.
- [00:07:55.800]There he is Chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:07:57.851]with us here on Canada kickoff.
- [00:07:58.900]Matt Coton is up next with a look around the big 10.
- [00:08:01.300]It's our big 10 blitz.
