- [00:00:00.371](lively music)
- [00:00:04.420]Hello and welcome.
- [00:00:06.920]These days, Architecture Hall
- [00:00:09.120]is not the same bustling in-person environment you remember
- [00:00:13.840]but it is very much alive
- [00:00:15.840]and thriving with innovative fall classes
- [00:00:19.051]and record undergraduate enrollment.
- [00:00:22.900]When COVID-19 forced us
- [00:00:25.040]to finish the spring semester remotely,
- [00:00:27.451]our faculty, staff and students did not miss a beat.
- [00:00:33.910]The care, creativity, and quality we all expect
- [00:00:38.240]of our community remained constant.
- [00:00:41.150]And I couldn't be more impressed or proud.
- [00:00:45.440]It was exciting to see new university collaborations develop
- [00:00:49.780]as faculty experimented with teaching
- [00:00:52.380]and learning solutions.
- [00:00:54.480]D1 faculty members teamed up
- [00:00:56.790]with university communications.
- [00:00:59.060]Together they created drone footage
- [00:01:01.870]of Lincoln's Hay Market District
- [00:01:03.870]to bring detailed project imagery to remote studios.
- [00:01:08.650]And Professor Jeff Days' studio helped
- [00:01:11.290]UNL's Larsen Tractor Museum explore expansion options
- [00:01:15.660]in our first summer studio offering.
- [00:01:19.920]Even with travel restrictions,
- [00:01:21.552]our planning students helped the community
- [00:01:24.560]of Brownville, Nebraska with flood recovery.
- [00:01:28.040]Working remotely, CRP students provided the community
- [00:01:31.900]with important research data,
- [00:01:34.220]planning recommendations
- [00:01:35.612]and suggestions for flood prevention and mitigation.
- [00:01:40.500]This fall, the university forged ahead
- [00:01:43.200]with in-person, remote and hybrid models
- [00:01:46.410]for course delivery,
- [00:01:47.720]using lessons learned from the spring semester.
- [00:01:51.310]Faculty conducted reviews on new remote platforms,
- [00:01:55.530]took their classes outside,
- [00:01:57.112]delivered lectures and events online
- [00:02:00.290]and created design challenges,
- [00:02:02.420]targeted at the pandemic itself.
- [00:02:05.400]The pandemic provided us an opportunity
- [00:02:07.952]to look with fresh and discerning eyes
- [00:02:11.350]at how we educate.
- [00:02:12.974]It also expanded our students' skillsets
- [00:02:16.560]in amazing ways.
- [00:02:18.210]Problem solving, presenting online,
- [00:02:21.820]exploring previously untapped online resources.
- [00:02:26.410]I'm proud to say that our students rose to every challenge.
- [00:02:31.280]The RDG-sponsored fourth year Collaborate Studio
- [00:02:34.480]is a great example of how remote technology
- [00:02:37.557]can connect us to professionals in other cities.
- [00:02:41.530]Our students tapped into high-caliber talent
- [00:02:45.030]with St. Louis-based RDG instructor, Katrina Cook,
- [00:02:48.660]and Omaha-based instructors,
- [00:02:50.920]Nate Gieselman and Adam Wise.
- [00:02:53.540]We're working on a senior living project
- [00:02:56.180]You know, how do you bring the community into this
- [00:02:58.390]where it's not just a senior living project,
- [00:03:00.047]but it's a destination
- [00:03:02.394]for all of, in this case, Omaha,
- [00:03:04.380]or whatever community it's in.
- [00:03:06.630]MUSIC
- [00:03:07.820]MUSIC
- [00:03:09.670]Something that's really interesting
- [00:03:10.710]that I've been learning is when working
- [00:03:12.050]with interiors with architects, there's more people working
- [00:03:15.340]on a project but also, there's different mindsets
- [00:03:17.540]that work together to create a lot more detail
- [00:03:19.839]within a project.
- [00:03:21.470]The hybrid of this studio,
- [00:03:23.190]both being on Zoom and in person,
- [00:03:24.840]it's been really helpful.
- [00:03:27.280]Maybe this isn't exactly what we were expecting
- [00:03:29.914]for a project but it's definitely very real world
- [00:03:32.600]and I think that's important to know
- [00:03:33.920]is these are the types of projects
- [00:03:35.300]that we're gonna be working with in the future.
- [00:03:38.460]We've discovered that Zoom technology
- [00:03:41.160]breaks down location-based barriers
- [00:03:43.710]and expands opportunities
- [00:03:45.610]to partner across the state.
- [00:03:47.850]Nate Biseck and Steve Hardy's
- [00:03:49.760]collaborate studio worked closely
- [00:03:52.120]with stakeholders 300 miles away
- [00:03:54.570]in Valentine, Nebraska.
- [00:03:56.222]What they're looking for
- [00:03:57.770]is something that can accommodate
- [00:03:59.685]new people coming into town.
- [00:04:02.470]They wanna bring more people into town,
- [00:04:04.260]so they wanna put in some affordable housing.
- [00:04:06.110]The pandemic certainly makes teaching
- [00:04:08.400]and working with communities a challenge.
- [00:04:10.900]We worked to overcome those challenges.
- [00:04:12.700]So we set up seven different laptops
- [00:04:15.440]and the community members came in
- [00:04:17.140]and joined Zoom sessions with students back here.
- [00:04:20.190]And it worked fairly well.
- [00:04:22.340]If there's a silver lining to the pandemic,
- [00:04:24.885]it's that our courses will continue
- [00:04:27.380]to use online technologies
- [00:04:29.062]to connect our students virtually
- [00:04:31.670]to any point on the planet.
- [00:04:34.140]This is an exciting moment
- [00:04:35.700]in the future of higher education
- [00:04:37.690]and the college is poised to take a lead role
- [00:04:40.970]in shaping with that future.
- [00:04:42.860]Partnering with architects in Omaha-based HDR,
- [00:04:46.076]David Newton's spatial informatics studio
- [00:04:49.380]is using artificial intelligence
- [00:04:51.270]to design cities that will combat climate change.
- [00:04:54.610]The studio is currently exploring the development
- [00:04:57.270]of sustainable hyper-dense architecture
- [00:04:59.890]in megacities around the world.
- [00:05:02.170]We hope it changes the future
- [00:05:03.800]by providing better options and more efficient ways
- [00:05:06.440]of dwelling and dealing with the problems
- [00:05:08.630]of global warming.
- [00:05:10.740]I have some college leadership changes to report.
- [00:05:13.800]Dr. Zhenghong Tang was promoted
- [00:05:15.947]to director of the community and regional planning program
- [00:05:19.550]after Gordon Scholz's retirement in June.
- [00:05:22.370]And David Karle was promoted
- [00:05:24.027]from interim to full director of the architecture program.
- [00:05:28.328]Despite this year's many challenges,
- [00:05:30.887]our faculty and students persevered
- [00:05:33.480]and have even won regional and international awards.
- [00:05:36.910]Here's a quick look.
- [00:05:38.290]But for more details, please visit our website.
- [00:05:41.830]It is in times like these
- [00:05:43.309]that we show the world our true grit and metal.
- [00:05:47.770]I want to leave you with a few words of inspiration
- [00:05:50.900]that one of our instructors shared.
- [00:05:53.179]I think it's a shining example
- [00:05:55.670]of our culture here in the college.
- [00:05:58.240]Until next time, take care,
- [00:06:00.840]and go Big Red.
- [00:06:02.910]Still drawing.
- [00:06:05.680]Still together.
- [00:06:08.240]Strong as ever.
- [00:06:11.280]Design power.
- [00:06:13.749](chuckling)
