- [00:00:00.350]I am pleased to introduce the 2020 Christa McAuliffe prize
- [00:00:04.020]for courage and excellence in education.
- [00:00:07.130]Christa McAuliffe was the first teacher in space
- [00:00:10.160]who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster.
- [00:00:14.720]Since that time, the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:00:18.620]has selected a Nebraska teacher who exemplifies
- [00:00:22.730]courage and excellence in education.
- [00:00:26.060]This year, I am pleased to introduce Lindsie Thiems.
- [00:00:30.000]a preschool teacher at Kearney Public Schools
- [00:00:32.850]as the recipient of the 2020 Christa McAuliffe prize.
- [00:00:36.940]Let's hear from Lindsie and learn more
- [00:00:38.890]about her and her work.
- [00:00:40.830]Congratulations, Lindsie.
- [00:00:43.434](upbeat music)
- [00:00:53.110]I believe I have displayed courage by going on
- [00:00:54.870]to complete three college degrees,
- [00:00:57.000]when neither of my parents have one.
- [00:00:59.010]I believe I displayed courage when has a single lady
- [00:01:01.320]in my 20s, trying to complete my bachelor's degree,
- [00:01:04.290]I said yes to fostering two students of mine
- [00:01:06.430]and their younger brother,
- [00:01:07.390]I went on to adopt them.
- [00:01:08.720]My husband and I displayed courage after knowing
- [00:01:10.870]how hard the foster care system is
- [00:01:12.710]and still got licensed to foster.
- [00:01:14.550]That journey led us to taking in four siblings
- [00:01:17.180]for just a short year.
- [00:01:18.460]I displayed courage when I accepted
- [00:01:19.710]my multiple sclerosis diagnosis and decided
- [00:01:22.270]to not let it ever define me
- [00:01:23.670]and to continue to go on and thrive.
- [00:01:25.132](upbeat music)
- [00:02:41.710]I want my students to always know that
- [00:02:43.270]no matter what their life is like outside
- [00:02:45.090]of the doors of our school, that Mrs. Lindsie
- [00:02:47.320]is always a kind, caring, safe,
- [00:02:49.530]and trusting person that they have in their life.
- [00:02:51.850]Even if there's no one else for them.
- [00:02:53.680]I truly hope that every teacher has the school
- [00:02:56.210]because there is not a student out there
- [00:02:57.740]that does not benefit from that.
- [00:02:59.700]If through my teaching, I can bring
- [00:03:01.450]more inspiration to someone, if I can invoke
- [00:03:04.060]a fellow teacher to try something new and creative.
- [00:03:06.880]If I move someone from passivity to courageousness,
- [00:03:10.050]or if I can simply light a spark that leads
- [00:03:12.020]to excellence in anyone, then I've taught something
- [00:03:14.530]as important as any subject I will ever teach.
- [00:03:17.630]I'm not just educating them for a year.
- [00:03:20.030]This is their life.
- [00:03:21.640]I have them every day of the week,
- [00:03:23.750]their parents have entrusted me with them.
- [00:03:26.560]And my job is to not only educate them academically,
- [00:03:29.790]but to show them that people believe in them,
- [00:03:32.710]that they can believe in other people,
- [00:03:34.170]that there's support out there,
- [00:03:35.410]that they can achieve their dreams.
- [00:03:39.130]A lot of teachers and people along the way
- [00:03:41.150]helped me achieve my dreams.
- [00:03:42.500]And I want to do that for other little kids,
- [00:03:44.630]no matter what their circumstances are in life.
- [00:03:48.150]And for them to walk through my classroom doors
- [00:03:50.210]to know every day that they're loved
- [00:03:51.610]and that no matter what's going on at home,
- [00:03:54.540]that they can trust me and I'm there for them.
- [00:03:56.240]And they will always be taken care of.
- [00:03:57.820]The courage to me really means going,
- [00:04:01.580]putting yourself out on the line
- [00:04:03.980]when you're not sure it's going to be widely accepted
- [00:04:06.210]by other people and doing the right thing,
- [00:04:08.370]because you know it's the right thing to do,
- [00:04:11.100]even in really hard situations.
- [00:04:13.500]I just think it's so humbling that I was even nominated
- [00:04:19.110]for this award to begin with
- [00:04:20.347]and to be put in a pool of teachers
- [00:04:22.660]and educators that strive every day to do their best,
- [00:04:26.020]not only within their classroom walls,
- [00:04:27.690]but to try and get their students and their families
- [00:04:31.690]and just their own community to spread that even farther
- [00:04:35.090]as far as making the world a better place.
- [00:04:37.240](upbeat crescendo)
