- [00:00:00.176](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.680]Welcome back, it is Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:00:04.240]Huskers today set to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions
- [00:00:08.110]and first home game for the Cornhuskers.
- [00:00:09.850]And as we do each and every week
- [00:00:10.900]during Countdown to Kickoff,
- [00:00:11.970]a chance to sit down and catch up with the Chancellor for
- [00:00:14.240]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:16.120]And while we were disappointed a couple weeks ago,
- [00:00:18.410]not to have the home game with Wisconsin,
- [00:00:20.310]it's going to feel great, isn't it?
- [00:00:21.600]To have some football back inside of Memorial Stadium?
- [00:00:25.130]Well, Greg, you know,
- [00:00:25.963]I never thought I'd see the first home game of our season
- [00:00:29.020]line in the week of Veteran's Day.
- [00:00:30.800]None of us would've ever, never have imagined that,
- [00:00:33.650]you know, but, at this point and where we are with things,
- [00:00:37.350]I think everyone is celebrating every game that we get the
- [00:00:40.410]opportunity to, to play and to watch.
- [00:00:44.220]Certainly looking forward to the opportunity
- [00:00:46.140]to host our friends from Penn State today in Lincoln.
- [00:00:49.730]Excited about them being here.
- [00:00:51.720]We've had some great competitive games
- [00:00:53.510]over the years with Penn State.
- [00:00:55.060]No one will ever forget the, the game of,
- [00:00:58.690]you know, immediately after they had some crisis
- [00:01:01.570]in their, in their environment there.
- [00:01:03.520]I think that was our first year in the Big Ten.
- [00:01:05.598]Mh-mmm.
- [00:01:06.431]If I remember correctly.
- [00:01:07.470]And it all is a lasting memory for us.
- [00:01:10.080]And it's, it's a little bit interesting
- [00:01:12.410]that in the week of Veteran's Day
- [00:01:14.950]that we have a blue and white team coming
- [00:01:17.000]to play a red and white team, right?
- [00:01:19.540]And so we'll have red, white, and blue on the field
- [00:01:22.090]for, for Veteran's, Veteran's week.
- [00:01:25.070]So we're, we're happy about that.
- [00:01:27.020]Looking forward to a great game today.
- [00:01:29.130]Very, very appropriate for having that
- [00:01:30.910]with Veteran's Day just a couple of days ago.
- [00:01:33.070]Well, I understand you have some great scholarship news
- [00:01:35.850]for students in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:38.140]The understanding is that students are going to be eligible
- [00:01:40.002]as early as this coming January.
- [00:01:43.130]How do new students to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:01:45.520]qualify for this?
- [00:01:47.790]Well, we're, we're really excited
- [00:01:48.990]about this, Greg.
- [00:01:50.340]The Nebraska state legislature approved the bill that was
- [00:01:54.010]proposed by Governor Pete Ricketts this past year,
- [00:01:57.440]to implement the Nebraska Career Scholarships Act
- [00:02:01.360]that puts in place scholarship funding
- [00:02:05.060]of up to $8,000 a year
- [00:02:08.010]for students who are, who qualified or eligible
- [00:02:11.700]for these scholarships in a high need,
- [00:02:15.350]high workforce, high job demand, need, demand
- [00:02:19.020]in our workforce that have strong academic potential
- [00:02:22.720]in areas like engineering and mathematics,
- [00:02:25.920]computer information systems,
- [00:02:27.860]athletic training is one of the areas that's outlined
- [00:02:30.645]in the Career Scholarships Act,
- [00:02:33.570]communication science disorders, pre-health areas of study.
- [00:02:38.380]And so we're very excited about this.
- [00:02:41.390]We'll bring this first year of implementation at UNL,
- [00:02:45.160]which will be for fall of 2021.
- [00:02:48.030]Our students that will be coming in
- [00:02:49.940]this coming academic year.
- [00:02:53.050]A new avenue for 165 of these scholarships
- [00:02:57.490]to be offered for incoming UNL students.
- [00:03:01.763]So we're, we're excited that they can apply
- [00:03:05.000]for those with the incoming class.
- [00:03:08.090]So by March 1st of this year,
- [00:03:10.890]students can apply for these new career scholarships.
- [00:03:14.590]And we're just very pleased because
- [00:03:16.620]it fits the, the mantra that we have
- [00:03:20.880]where we're supporting students
- [00:03:22.460]to grow our workforce and our top priorities
- [00:03:25.140]for the state here at UNL,
- [00:03:27.390]with high skill, high demand, and high wage jobs.
- [00:03:30.410]So excited about this new opportunity
- [00:03:32.930]of scholarship support.
- [00:03:34.415]We are hopeful and expecting to see this new line of
- [00:03:39.390]scholarship support also continue to grow.
- [00:03:42.051]It's our understanding that, that is a plan in the state
- [00:03:46.800]to, is to add to this fund in the years ahead
- [00:03:50.460]to grow the number of students across the state
- [00:03:53.780]that are able to take advantage of this at UNL
- [00:03:57.410]or at any of the other
- [00:03:58.720]University of Nebraska system campuses, as well.
- [00:04:01.687]Oh, I can-
- [00:04:02.520]So exciting funds,
- [00:04:03.353]our new career scholarships.
- [00:04:04.930]Fantastic. Thank you so much for letting us
- [00:04:07.530]in on that.
- [00:04:08.363]That is wonderful news for a lot of folks.
- [00:04:10.350]Well, Chancellor, across the sports world,
- [00:04:12.280]we've seen a lot of appeals over the last six, eight months
- [00:04:14.650]for greater unity as, in respect, as it is to race.
- [00:04:17.920]Obviously the arts, the storytelling, is a way
- [00:04:20.240]for all of us to engage in that.
- [00:04:21.900]And I hear you have an upcoming event on campus, and online,
- [00:04:25.180]that may be of interest to some Nebraskans
- [00:04:27.030]and students of history.
- [00:04:28.430]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:04:31.104]Well, we are kind of excited Greg,
- [00:04:32.930]because we're having the opportunity on the 17th of November
- [00:04:37.560]at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts
- [00:04:40.300]to have a very special opportunity for all Nebraskans
- [00:04:43.650]to engage with Nebraska history.
- [00:04:46.770]Very relevant in the particular time, as well,
- [00:04:49.790]as our nation kind of continues to seek a path
- [00:04:52.330]to racial equity for all of our citizens.
- [00:04:55.490]And this special opportunity is the debut
- [00:04:59.880]of a new documentary film entitled
- [00:05:02.850]Chief Standing Bear: A Journey to Statuary Hall.
- [00:05:06.950]Actually co-produced by Judi Gaiashkibos, the Executive
- [00:05:11.140]Director of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs,
- [00:05:14.280]and one of our graduates, Ingrid Holmquist,
- [00:05:16.980]who not too many years ago,
- [00:05:19.340]graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:05:21.790]went on to graduate school at Columbia University
- [00:05:25.210]in New York, and has now created this documentary.
- [00:05:28.620]And what it does is tell the story
- [00:05:31.860]of Ponca Chief Standing Bear,
- [00:05:33.770]a legendary figure in Nebraska history,
- [00:05:37.690]and his trailblazing human rights court case in 1879,
- [00:05:43.870]and has now led to his designation as a Nebraska hero
- [00:05:48.720]with his statue being placed in the U.S. Capitol
- [00:05:52.600]this past year as one of those two statuaries
- [00:05:55.809]in Statuary Hall representing our great state.
- [00:05:59.230]The other one being Willa Cather, one of our alums,
- [00:06:02.700]and here well-known Nebraska figure as well.
- [00:06:06.430]So excited about this event.
- [00:06:08.630]It's being co-sponsored
- [00:06:09.860]by the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs
- [00:06:12.090]and by us here at the University
- [00:06:14.560]to debut this documentary on the 17th.
- [00:06:18.090]People are free to attend in person or to live stream it,
- [00:06:21.960]whatever their choice might be.
- [00:06:24.210]But tickets are required to be able to log in.
- [00:06:28.210]There is also the option to select a paid ticket
- [00:06:31.470]to support the Lied Center if people so wish to do so.
- [00:06:34.880]It's free, but if they wish to donate to the Lied Center,
- [00:06:37.920]especially in these times, it would be be much appreciated.
- [00:06:41.790]And we're looking forward to it.
