- [00:00:02.140]One of the biggest challenges is student engagement
- [00:00:05.800]and building community within the classroom,
- [00:00:08.730]and having that online presence, not only myself,
- [00:00:12.630]but also creating it within the student body,
- [00:00:15.460]within the class.
- [00:00:16.650]When I first started teaching about 29 years ago,
- [00:00:19.600]I didn't know any better.
- [00:00:21.370]That's how I was taught by my professors.
- [00:00:24.120]And I was very instructive, and I was on autopilot
- [00:00:27.810]and I was ready to transmit knowledge.
- [00:00:31.900]And over the years, I've come to realize
- [00:00:34.020]that teaching in general,
- [00:00:35.860]whether teaching in the classroom or online,
- [00:00:38.740]it has to be interactive for the students
- [00:00:40.830]to really dive deep in and internalize the material
- [00:00:44.900]and get active and be engaged in it.
- [00:00:46.820]I read a lot about online teaching and teaching in general.
- [00:00:51.450]So several subscriptions,
- [00:00:54.459]"The Chronicle of Higher Education,"
- [00:00:56.310]of course, is the Bible of higher education.
- [00:00:58.370]So I read those articles all the time.
- [00:01:01.170]Then there is "Faculty Focus,"
- [00:01:02.660]a couple of newsletters on teaching,
- [00:01:05.500]and then they have online teaching components in them.
- [00:01:08.520]So one is "Free Faculty Focus."
- [00:01:11.340]The other one is "The Teaching Professor,"
- [00:01:14.010]it's a paid subscription.
- [00:01:15.440]Memberships in USDLA,
- [00:01:17.480]United States Distance Learning Association or OLC,
- [00:01:20.820]which is the Online Learning Consortium.
- [00:01:23.220]Working with instructional designers
- [00:01:25.080]and members of ECC is a must.
- [00:01:27.680]I would think not only for online classes,
- [00:01:30.530]but for any kind of teaching.
- [00:01:31.987]The instructional designers are great.
- [00:01:34.280]You need to use your instructional designers.
- [00:01:37.060]I use midterm surveys and end of the course evals
- [00:01:40.100]to improve my teaching,
- [00:01:41.870]and then technology, the use of technology,
- [00:01:44.240]not only what is available through the university
- [00:01:47.666]like VidGrid or Zoom or technologies like that,
- [00:01:52.060]but also just use of technology in the classroom
- [00:01:54.760]like blogs or podcasts or anything that you can use
- [00:01:59.660]to energize the course and content.
- [00:02:02.380]Using video capture technology,
- [00:02:05.860]I always create what I call Tour de Class with Dr. J,
- [00:02:11.910]and I literally take the students through
- [00:02:14.350]how to navigate the course, how to find their way around,
- [00:02:17.860]you know, where is everything so that that stress
- [00:02:21.730]of being in an online class can be alleviated some.
- [00:02:25.901]And then discussion, use discussions
- [00:02:29.500]and subscribe to them and tell your students
- [00:02:32.010]to subscribe to them
- [00:02:32.920]so that you can answer questions all at once,
- [00:02:36.090]rather than sitting in your office,
- [00:02:37.730]and one at a time students come,
- [00:02:40.010]you can have have a discussion going on.
- [00:02:42.640]And for every one question that someone asks you,
- [00:02:46.080]there's probably at least five or 10 other students
- [00:02:48.430]who have the same question.
- [00:02:50.010]So why not optimize time
- [00:02:53.140]and minimize unnecessary interactions?
- [00:02:56.250]Personally, I'm always trying to learn new things
- [00:02:59.330]when it comes to teaching,
- [00:03:00.500]when it comes to online teaching,
- [00:03:02.460]and when it comes to the subject matter.
- [00:03:04.580]So have that passion for learning
- [00:03:06.710]so that you can infuse that into your courses
- [00:03:09.510]and make your courses and your delivery
- [00:03:11.770]and interactions with the students better.
- [00:03:13.920]There is always new strategies that are created,
- [00:03:18.360]and those are all helpful.
- [00:03:19.730]So push yourself outside of your comfort zone
- [00:03:23.140]so that you can do better in the classroom
- [00:03:25.280]and you can be more effective.
