- [00:00:00.000](upbeat instrumental music)
- [00:00:02.550]Welcome back it's "Countdown to Kickoff",
- [00:00:04.050]Huskers and the NorthWestern Wildcats
- [00:00:06.170]having played today here in Evanston.
- [00:00:08.040]And as we do each and every week
- [00:00:09.210]during "Countdown to Kickoff"
- [00:00:10.410]a chance to catch up with the chancellor
- [00:00:12.360]from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:14.970]And doggone it, I know everybody was excited
- [00:00:17.170]about last week, Halloween,
- [00:00:18.680]the Badgers, good weather in Lincoln,
- [00:00:21.060]but in the age of COVID, I guess we have to kind of,
- [00:00:24.140]get used to these hit and miss type situations.
- [00:00:27.960]Yeah, I think we've all gotten really good Greg
- [00:00:29.880]in rolling with the punches and we'll continue to do that.
- [00:00:33.400]It was a real disappointment for everybody
- [00:00:35.671]to have the game canceled.
- [00:00:37.970]Our first home game of the season,
- [00:00:40.530]everyone was looking forward to it
- [00:00:42.100]and it was Halloween to boot,
- [00:00:43.940]you know, as you've said the same at the same time,
- [00:00:46.980]but unfortunately things didn't work out well in Wisconsin,
- [00:00:50.660]as we know, and now they're out again this week
- [00:00:54.320]as well with their game for Purdue.
- [00:00:57.180]So feel for them and feel for that loss,
- [00:00:59.430]feel for our players and the loss of an opportunity to play
- [00:01:02.520]and to get to play at home for the first time
- [00:01:05.330]even though under the kinda unusual circumstances.
- [00:01:07.900]So moving forward and happy to be you know, here today
- [00:01:12.370]and have the opportunity to be playing in Evanston
- [00:01:15.150]and play in Northwestern
- [00:01:16.850]and looking forward to a great game.
- [00:01:18.810]You've obviously had a front row seat
- [00:01:21.010]to all these discussions about Big Ten football
- [00:01:23.580]with your position at the university.
- [00:01:25.290]But I understand you've gone beyond this, the Big Ten level.
- [00:01:28.430]You're doing some things at the NCAA level,
- [00:01:30.660]tell me about that.
- [00:01:32.540]Well, yeah, I did just recently assume the position
- [00:01:37.200]on the NCAA Presidential Forum
- [00:01:40.810]as the Big Ten member of that forum.
- [00:01:43.910]So, there are two NCAA groups
- [00:01:47.820]that are oversight groups, in governance of the NCAA.
- [00:01:52.940]And this would be in D-1, Division 1 portion of NCAA.
- [00:01:57.790]There's the board of governors
- [00:01:59.290]that's like the board of directors.
- [00:02:01.070]You wanna think of it that way.
- [00:02:03.470]That make the kind of decisions day to day
- [00:02:05.935]from a board perspective.
- [00:02:07.800]And then there's, what's called the presidential forum,
- [00:02:10.100]which is what I just assumed the position on
- [00:02:14.650]that advises the board .
- [00:02:16.410]So, it represents
- [00:02:18.720]the 32 Division 1 conferences
- [00:02:22.700]across the NCAA.
- [00:02:24.590]So not only the A5 you know, that we're part of,
- [00:02:29.370]but the FCS schools
- [00:02:32.240]and the other D-1 conferences across all of Division 1.
- [00:02:38.020]They have quarterly meetings
- [00:02:39.740]so I actually had my first one of those about a week ago.
- [00:02:44.360]A four hour zoom call, you know, version of a meeting
- [00:02:48.880]and had the opportunity to be involved
- [00:02:50.598]in that level of discussion.
- [00:02:52.410]And not only the things that the board of governors
- [00:02:55.930]are going to be considering.
- [00:02:57.160]So think of the things you're recently,
- [00:02:59.120]like, changed schedules and change protocols,
- [00:03:03.510]championship schedules, championship brackets,
- [00:03:06.430]all of those kinds of things that the board is considering
- [00:03:10.150]we advise on.
- [00:03:11.630]But currently we're also advising on things like,
- [00:03:14.136]name, image, and likeness.
- [00:03:16.220]And all of the conversation around that
- [00:03:18.550]or student athletes,
- [00:03:20.800]that's in change in a very big period of change currently.
- [00:03:24.750]And then also the forum has been challenged
- [00:03:28.180]by the NCAA to look at long-term sustainability issues
- [00:03:33.560]for the NCAA, right.
- [00:03:35.340]Both financial sustainability,
- [00:03:38.510]as well as some of the things that are occurring
- [00:03:41.190]in terms of change in athletics.
- [00:03:42.870]So I decided to join that and as fate would have it,
- [00:03:47.650]at the same time that I came on to represent the Big Ten
- [00:03:50.760]for the next three years.
- [00:03:52.660]My former colleague, Donde Plowman,
- [00:03:54.650]who was our executive vice chancellor here
- [00:03:57.630]and dean of the Business College here
- [00:04:00.320]until a year ago when she left to become the chancellor
- [00:04:03.410]at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville
- [00:04:06.110]came on the forum at the same time I did,
- [00:04:09.200]representing the SEC.
- [00:04:10.640]So Donde and I are getting to have some fun together
- [00:04:13.693]working in the NCAA now as part of that forum.
- [00:04:16.973]Oh, that's fantastic.
- [00:04:18.620]NCAA Ronnie green,
- [00:04:19.520]the chancellor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:04:21.430]fifth year as chancellor,
- [00:04:23.740]your 11th year working at the university, congratulations.
- [00:04:26.460]I didn't realize it had gone that far.
- [00:04:27.720]Oh my goodness. This time fly.
- [00:04:29.940]You did recently invite some university members
- [00:04:33.000]to come celebrate with you, faculty and staff
- [00:04:36.150]on their milestones.
- [00:04:37.500]Were you surprised by the highest number of years celebrated
- [00:04:40.660]by a university employee?
- [00:04:43.230]Yeah, yes Greg, absolutely.
- [00:04:45.290]You know, it's,
- [00:04:46.610]we are blessed with a amazing level of talent
- [00:04:50.960]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:53.390]We have about 6,400 employees
- [00:04:56.350]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in our flagship campus
- [00:04:59.830]between our faculty and staff
- [00:05:01.690]across all elements of the university.
- [00:05:04.420]And every year we do have a celebration
- [00:05:07.720]that celebrates the length of service of our employees.
- [00:05:11.040]So in five-year increments, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25,
- [00:05:15.100]all the way up to 55,
- [00:05:18.210]years of service.
- [00:05:19.730]So this was one for me, it was kind of hard.
- [00:05:21.960]I scratched my head a little bit and I said,
- [00:05:23.470]really it's been 10 years since I came back
- [00:05:26.680]to the University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:28.484]And it will be the,
- [00:05:30.860]this year is my fifth year at this role.
- [00:05:33.060]That's equally hard to believe.
- [00:05:36.140]This year we recognized a thousand
- [00:05:38.900]of our faculty and staff
- [00:05:40.810]who hit those milestones of times of service.
- [00:05:44.150]And if you can believe it,
- [00:05:45.900]we had 13 of our employees,
- [00:05:49.520]13 of our community members who had been here 45, 50
- [00:05:54.380]or 55 years in time.
- [00:05:57.900]We had two people who have been here 55 years
- [00:06:01.140]of length of service.
- [00:06:02.750]One of those has had four family members
- [00:06:05.530]who also have been employees of the university
- [00:06:08.180]generationally back across earlier generations
- [00:06:11.470]of their family.
- [00:06:12.790]One of those 45 year employees,
- [00:06:15.920]the shooter was Harvey Perlman.
- [00:06:17.170]My predecessor is the chancellor here at UNL,
- [00:06:20.498]and he hit his 45 year mark.
- [00:06:23.940]I joked with him a little bit in that celebration,
- [00:06:27.540]because I remember when he stepped down as chancellor
- [00:06:30.093]five years ago.
- [00:06:32.180]That celebration,
- [00:06:33.013]I talked about how he had been at the University of Nebraska
- [00:06:37.800]from the time he came here as a student, since 1959.
- [00:06:43.178]You can put that in context all about eight years
- [00:06:46.250]of that time, he had been at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:06:48.970]So people like that,
- [00:06:51.080]who have dedicated and committed their service
- [00:06:54.380]to this institution, through teaching and research
- [00:06:57.610]and all of the various activities
- [00:06:59.520]that we have as the statewide campus for Nebraska.
- [00:07:03.880]It was great to celebrate with them,
- [00:07:06.650]you know, and just to mark that
- [00:07:10.050]even in this time where we couldn't all be together.
- [00:07:12.450]We had some fun doing it across the campus
- [00:07:15.600]here in the last few weeks.
- [00:07:17.150]That is fantastic.
- [00:07:19.060]My word as the time go.
- [00:07:19.893]Well chancellor, we appreciate the sit down visit
- [00:07:21.330]we'll hope, keep our fingers crossed
- [00:07:22.920]we get a chance to do it again next week back
- [00:07:24.750]in Lincoln for the Penn State game.
- [00:07:27.166]We're certainly are looking forward to seeing Penn State
- [00:07:29.970]come to town.
- [00:07:31.323]We're looking forward to them being here
- [00:07:33.796]and looking forward to our opening home game of the season
- [00:07:36.875]to being near Memorial Stadium next week
- [00:07:40.593]and hope for a great game today. Go Big Red.
- [00:07:44.430]Green with us here on "Countdown to kickoff".
- [00:07:46.150]Matt Courtney will join us next with the Big Ten blitz.
