- [00:00:01.598]I have always seen through a lens.
- [00:00:05.310]James Le Sueur grew up
- [00:00:06.780]watching history unfold on television,
- [00:00:09.640]and he cemented his love of photography
- [00:00:12.420]during hours spent in a dark room.
- [00:00:15.190]Although my dad didn't graduate from high school,
- [00:00:16.720]he did know how to build things, so he built me a dark room.
- [00:00:20.460]So from basically the age of eight or so,
- [00:00:22.380]that's where I lived.
- [00:00:23.410]Today, Le Sueur brings
- [00:00:24.530]his two passions together.
- [00:00:26.320]He's a professor of history and a filmmaker.
- [00:00:29.623](upbeat orchestral music)
- [00:00:32.800]Le Sueur's new film, "The Art of Dissent,"
- [00:00:35.060]follows dissidents in Czechoslovakia
- [00:00:37.240]before and after the Soviet-led invasion of 1968.
- [00:00:43.210]Footage found in the archives in Prague
- [00:00:45.520]help tell the story
- [00:00:46.890]and musicians involved in the resistance
- [00:00:49.130]provide a musical backdrop.
- [00:00:51.022](rock music)
- [00:00:53.560]Writer and dissident Vaclav Havel would eventually go on
- [00:00:56.850]to become president after helping end 40 years
- [00:01:00.010]of communist rule.
- [00:01:02.458](Vaclav speaking in foreign language)
- [00:01:05.080]It's a story that provides inspiration even today.
- [00:01:09.170]And Havel and the dissidents really overcame something,
- [00:01:12.240]but they didn't overcome it to put everybody in prison
- [00:01:15.210]or to harm people.
- [00:01:16.540]They overcame it because they wanted to build
- [00:01:18.714]a civil society that would be tolerant and respectful
- [00:01:23.290]and art would flourish and ideas would flourish.
- [00:01:26.520]Le Sueur says
- [00:01:27.353]a growing film community at Nebraska
- [00:01:29.470]has boosted the university's reputation in the field
- [00:01:33.000]and as an innovator in teaching.
- [00:01:35.670]In today's world, having another media platform
- [00:01:38.470]to explore, to work on is really an advantage,
- [00:01:42.970]especially because history is a changing field
- [00:01:46.300]and history students are changing
- [00:01:47.850]and I think they're looking
- [00:01:48.900]for different modes of communicating.
- [00:01:52.240]It's a way to interpret the world and history
- [00:01:55.200]from behind the lens of a camera.
