- [00:00:00.000]Hello, welcome to Big Red Resilience
- [00:00:02.610]and Wake Up to Well-being.
- [00:00:04.110]Today's topic will be over optimism.
- [00:00:08.041]Optimism is a term that can easily be misinterpreted.
- [00:00:11.780]Many times optimism, happiness are terms
- [00:00:14.120]that become interchangeable, but there's difference.
- [00:00:18.200]One does not have to be happy to be optimistic.
- [00:00:20.880]Optimism means having a positive outlook on the future.
- [00:00:24.212]Optimism is a secret ingredient to mastering resilience.
- [00:00:28.070]Even though current moments may be difficult,
- [00:00:30.260]power comes from choosing optimism.
- [00:00:32.540]Choosing optimism throughout the day
- [00:00:34.040]helps us conquer the difficult hurdles
- [00:00:35.870]and opens our minds to the opportunities
- [00:00:37.710]that each day brings us.
- [00:00:40.860]Another good definition for optimism is
- [00:00:43.010]that is a starting point to dealing with reality.
- [00:00:46.200]It is easy to focus on the negative
- [00:00:47.930]since none of us are born optimists.
- [00:00:50.070]So why should we choose to be optimistic?
- [00:00:52.830]Some of the benefits include better physical health,
- [00:00:55.520]persistence, emotional health, less stress,
- [00:00:58.600]and better relationships.
- [00:01:01.960]The next question is,
- [00:01:02.793]how can we choose to practice optimism each day?
- [00:01:05.990]The first step is to look at the big picture
- [00:01:07.580]of the situation.
- [00:01:09.000]Try looking at what good things come out of the situation
- [00:01:11.640]and how today's situations can make you
- [00:01:13.520]into a stronger person for tomorrow.
- [00:01:16.050]Next decide what is realistic to expect
- [00:01:18.890]and decide what is in your control.
- [00:01:21.160]Take a notepad and write down the things
- [00:01:22.970]that are in your control versus those things that are not.
- [00:01:25.960]Whenever I write something down,
- [00:01:27.370]whether it's on a sticky note or a journal,
- [00:01:29.890]getting my thoughts out on a piece
- [00:01:31.420]of paper makes me feel more in control of the situation.
- [00:01:34.700]It is always good to remember
- [00:01:35.790]that the one thing we can always control
- [00:01:38.150]is our attitude and perspective.
- [00:01:41.150]Finally, choose to focus on your inner strengths.
- [00:01:44.340]Writing down your strengths in some pieces of paper
- [00:01:46.160]and hang these up can also give you power
- [00:01:48.260]throughout your day.
- [00:01:49.840]And if you want to go the extra step,
- [00:01:51.430]write down strengths that you see in your friends
- [00:01:53.600]and give them a note that lists their strengths,
- [00:01:55.900]so that way they can prove in optimism.
- [00:01:59.900]Other ways to practice optimism
- [00:02:01.440]throughout the day is by accenting the positive.
- [00:02:03.900]One you can do this is by writing in a journal
- [00:02:06.040]and whatever positive messages you write,
- [00:02:08.136]underline or highlight them,
- [00:02:10.250]even the little things like, I had a good conversation
- [00:02:12.270]with a friend today, is a great way to practice optimism.
- [00:02:15.889]Another way to practice optimism is to eliminate negativity.
- [00:02:20.080]Whenever you notice yourself thinking negatively,
- [00:02:22.460]immediately tell the thought to go away
- [00:02:24.120]and replace the thought with your favorite song,
- [00:02:26.490]call a friend, or read a positive message.
- [00:02:30.170]Don't forget to be easier on yourself.
- [00:02:31.908]We all need to remember to take care of our bodies,
- [00:02:34.440]physically and mentally.
- [00:02:36.470]This can be seen by getting enough sleep, eating well,
- [00:02:39.510]exercising, and maintaining healthy relationships.
- [00:02:43.080]And remember that we all make mistakes,
- [00:02:44.910]and that is okay, is through our failures
- [00:02:47.670]that we become more resilient.
- [00:02:50.450]Finally, learn mindfulness.
- [00:02:52.320]And one can practice this by being present in the moment
- [00:02:54.550]and accepting the opportunity at hand.
- [00:02:58.938]To close, I would like to leave you
- [00:03:00.810]with a couple of my favorite quotes on optimism.
- [00:03:04.167]"Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power",
- [00:03:07.700]by William James.
- [00:03:09.390]And "Optimism, it's not just a mindset, it is behavior",
- [00:03:12.640]by Larry Elder.
- [00:03:14.050]Thank you for joining us,
- [00:03:15.370]and we hope you have a wonderful day practicing optimism.
