The Commercialization Partner of the Year award went to Omni-Threat Structures (OTS). The award recognizes a company that has licensed and developed a university technology, bringing it to market as a product or service. OTS builds disaster-resistant structures. The company has licensed modified concrete formulations and methods that provide shielding from high level electromagnetic pulse energy (EMP). The technology protects sensitive electronics from EMP, which can cripple power grids, data centers and other critical infrastructure.

[00:00:04.110]I'm the current CEO and one of the founding partners
[00:00:08.310]of Omni-Threat structures and ABC group.
[00:00:12.920]I work with David Mcgaw who is developing R & D
[00:00:16.770]and Matt Bergstrom who is our Chief Operating Officer
[00:00:20.300]responsible for our construction process improvements.
[00:00:23.160]We had approximately six hurricanes pass over
[00:00:26.300]some of our critical buildings in the State of Florida.
[00:00:29.230]I was tasked by one of our financial clients to head up
[00:00:33.920]a disaster response or a business continuity
[00:00:37.070]plan development for responding for future hurricanes.
[00:00:41.040]From there we found and developed a dome process
[00:00:44.810]to house our disaster recovery equipment
[00:00:47.760]and our headquarters and protect our first responders.
[00:00:51.320]We started to develop other processes and methods
[00:00:54.730]on how we could protect our infrastructure and our clients.
[00:00:58.650]And one of the things that we started hearing a buzz about
[00:01:01.030]was electromagnetic pulse, basically a by-product
[00:01:04.620]of a nuclear blast or an intentional weapon
[00:01:07.930]that would affect our electronics.
[00:01:10.330]And so we started researching
[00:01:12.200]and finding University in Nebraska,
[00:01:15.170]and a couple of professors named Chris Tuan and Lim Nguyen
[00:01:19.650]who were actually working on a STATCOM grant
[00:01:24.770]for alternatives to methods of how to shield
[00:01:28.680]for a HEMP event.
[00:01:32.550]We're in a multi flat world with a lot of bad actors
[00:01:35.720]who basically meant to threaten our way of life.
[00:01:39.360]Homeland Security and Department of Energy,
[00:01:42.680]Department of Defense has identified 16 areas
[00:01:45.460]of critical infrastructure which are vulnerable
[00:01:48.340]to both attacks.
[00:01:49.970]And we think the grid being the most critical
[00:01:54.400]to our way of life and vulnerable to those attacks.
[00:01:58.580]University of Nebraska has a great facility,
[00:02:00.700]great engineering department
[00:02:01.890]and a lot of resources that allow them to do R & D,
[00:02:07.540]detailed study, detailed analysis and testing
[00:02:10.792]of major components in laboratory conditions.
[00:02:14.750]It's one thing to build something as a prototype
[00:02:17.540]two feet tall in a laboratory and to take it into
[00:02:21.778]real world conditions and build a structure
[00:02:25.010]that's 20 or 30,000 square feet
[00:02:27.510]with a lot of different components
[00:02:29.140]including mechanical electrical plumbing.
[00:02:32.300]So we were able to combine university background information
[00:02:36.470]and experiments with our experience in construction,
[00:02:40.420]that we were able to take the best of R & D and theory
[00:02:43.850]and apply it to a real world condition.
