[00:00:09.130]a chance to get caught up with the Chancellor
[00:00:11.280]of the university of Nebraska, Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
[00:00:13.740]And Chancellor here we are,
[00:00:15.200]we have made it after months of uncertainty.
[00:00:18.197]We're gonna have a football game today,
[00:00:19.820]how do you feel about all this?
[00:00:22.880]Well, it's kinda phenomenal
[00:00:23.930]to get to this day, Greg, you know,
[00:00:27.620]all of the water that has gone under the bridge
[00:00:30.126]to get us here and there's been a lot of it,
[00:00:33.370]or it feels like there's been a lot of it.
[00:00:35.960]Just thrilled for our student athletes
[00:00:37.856]and for our fans to be able to kick off the season.
[00:00:42.980]It feels like we should be halfway through by now,
[00:00:46.770]in one sense of the word, but kicking it off
[00:00:49.090]and kicking it off into kind of a special way here with,
[00:00:52.840]in the big house in Columbus with the Buckeyes.
[00:00:57.070]And as you know, we kinda shared some sentiments together
[00:01:00.680]through that water going under the bridge
[00:01:03.480]over the last few months.
[00:01:04.700]So Ohio State and Nebraska became very good friends
[00:01:07.940]during the last several months.
[00:01:10.004]I've kidded a lot of folks that my new best friend
[00:01:13.532]is Christina Johnson,
[00:01:15.080]the president of Ohio state university.
[00:01:17.050]And she and I are celebrating together today,
[00:01:19.720]the opportunity for our teams to be playing on one another
[00:01:23.055]and to get the season off to a start.
[00:01:25.370]So it's a big day for Huskers everywhere,
[00:01:27.720]and like everybody listening, I'm ready to,
[00:01:30.770]ready and anxious for that kickoff, perhaps.
[00:01:33.450]No doubt, all right, well,
[00:01:34.750]the football season had to be adjusted.
[00:01:36.570]You had to do an awful lot of work on campus
[00:01:38.840]just to get this fall semester up and running.
[00:01:41.087]You're 10 weeks, unbelievably 10 weeks now into classes.
[00:01:45.534]Give us an update, how has it gone on campus here this fall?
[00:01:50.190]Well, extraordinary times that we're living in, obviously,
[00:01:53.800]and as we thought about the need
[00:01:56.500]for having our students back on campus,
[00:01:59.240]going all the way back to April last spring,
[00:02:02.220]we started talking about how important it would be
[00:02:05.780]for us to be able to have students on campus
[00:02:08.720]and have them in it in whatever way we could,
[00:02:12.240]relationally for them to be learning together
[00:02:15.580]and being on campus, so as you said,
[00:02:17.650]we just finished our 10th week of the fall term,
[00:02:21.940]four weeks yet to go in classes that lay ahead of us here.
[00:02:27.350]So we're excited about how it has gone,
[00:02:30.580]our faculty, and our staff,
[00:02:31.970]and our students have worked really, really hard
[00:02:34.790]to be committed to one another,
[00:02:36.500]to protect one another and be safe
[00:02:38.600]in this time that we're experiencing with COVID-19
[00:02:42.170]and it's gone really, really well.
[00:02:44.120]To be at a position of having for the seventh year in a row,
[00:02:48.770]over 25,000 students on campus
[00:02:51.510]at the university of Nebraska, Lincoln.
[00:02:53.380]We're very excited about that,
[00:02:55.070]especially in the times that we're in.
[00:02:59.370]We have also been very pleased
[00:03:02.137]that we have not hit community spread or outbreaks of COVID
[00:03:07.040]on our campus, that we've not been able
[00:03:08.930]to mitigate and contain for the safety of the community.
[00:03:12.847]No academic transmission, no classroom transmission
[00:03:17.470]of COVID-19 during these past 10 weeks,
[00:03:20.337]and I'm just really proud of our community.
[00:03:24.600]Greg, you know, that they took the Cornhusker commitment
[00:03:28.160]coming in, that they would do their part
[00:03:31.220]and that they would practice all of the best practices
[00:03:34.613]to protect one another, and we've seen that happen,
[00:03:38.210]and seeing people do that.
[00:03:40.460]So we know from wearing face masks,
[00:03:42.490]and personal protective equipment,
[00:03:44.230]and social distancing of all of our classes
[00:03:46.750]and all of our activities, good personal hygiene,
[00:03:50.475]getting tested, we just are really proud of our community
[00:03:55.180]and how it's gone for this semester.
[00:03:57.520]And looking forward to a good four weeks ahead

[00:04:12.074]Besides managing COVID-19, I know there's been
[00:04:15.440]a lot of other exciting things that have been happening
[00:04:17.569]on campus through the first 10 weeks.
[00:04:19.412]Can you give us an update on some,
[00:04:21.450]or give us some of the highlights of some of those things.
[00:04:23.490]Yeah Greg, besides having students on campus,
[00:04:27.160]as I was talking about earlier, that the most exciting thing
[00:04:29.690]about the fall as it is that,
[00:04:31.890]and being able to be together and be on campus.
[00:04:34.785]As I mentioned, our enrollment, we were very pleased
[00:04:39.193]that our enrollment held very strong for the university
[00:04:42.987]and the whole system was up in enrollment
[00:04:46.180]on the Lincoln campus, the flagship campus,
[00:04:48.510]we were up in Nebraska students,
[00:04:51.110]up in non-resident US students from outside of Nebraska,
[00:04:56.190]non-resident domestic students.
[00:04:59.350]We did see some decline in our international enrollment,
[00:05:02.300]but not nearly what we anticipated,
[00:05:05.160]given the constraints around international travel
[00:05:08.754]and with safety around COVID-19.
[00:05:11.310]So very pleased with our enrollment.
[00:05:15.119]We've had 25,000, almost 200 students
[00:05:18.170]on campus this semester.
[00:05:20.100]And if you look around the country and look around us,
[00:05:22.880]that was extraordinary.
[00:05:25.330]Our neighbors in Iowa down almost nine to 10%
[00:05:28.970]in enrollment at Iowa state and the university of Iowa,
[00:05:31.861]other States around us, the similar kind of thing.
[00:05:34.880]So we're just tremendously excited about how that has gone.
[00:05:39.210]Our first-generation students are up
[00:05:41.900]at about another 3% this year.
[00:05:44.370]So we continue to see growth and that access
[00:05:47.480]for our students to the university.
[00:05:50.180]Our underrepresented minority students
[00:05:52.340]at an all time record grew by almost 6%
[00:05:56.270]in our enrollment this year,
[00:05:57.700]we're very, very pleased to see that.
[00:05:59.540]And in our freshmen class,
[00:06:01.650]our underrepresented minority enrollment
[00:06:04.020]up 11 1/2%, Wow.
[00:06:06.270]over our previous record last year.
[00:06:08.755]So very, very pleased with enrollment.
[00:06:13.470]The US news and world report rankings
[00:06:15.590]for universities came out just a couple of weeks ago,
[00:06:18.181]and we were very pleased to be the only institution in the
[00:06:21.863]big ten that showed improvement in our peer assessment score
[00:06:25.601]in back-to-back years.
[00:06:27.210]So two years now in a row that UNL
[00:06:30.160]has seen that score go up, placing us in the top 25%
[00:06:34.740]of national universities in that metrics.
[00:06:37.970]So we're very, very pleased about that.
[00:06:40.170]Also ranked the very best in value
[00:06:43.239]and in support of veterans as well.
[00:06:46.410]So pleased with the rankings and the prestige
[00:06:49.149]that the university continues to grow.
[00:06:51.950]And then on the research side, you know,
[00:06:54.170]COVID-19, hasn't slowed us down any,
[00:06:56.438]we've worked really hard
[00:06:58.064]to maintain and keep our research operations going
[00:07:01.610]during these past seven months and have been successful
[00:07:04.990]in doing that with our faculty and our students.
[00:07:07.636]And recently for the third year in a row consecutively,
[00:07:12.646]we were in the top 100 institutions or across the world
[00:07:17.135]in terms of patents in earning US patents and innovations
[00:07:22.350]that are moving into the marketplace.
[00:07:24.060]44 for the university of Nebraska, 35 of those are from UNL,
[00:07:29.722]from the flagship campus within the university system.
[00:07:34.030]So lots of good things happening,
[00:07:35.683]we continue to see the campus grow,
[00:07:37.870]our engineering buildings are going up,
[00:07:39.580]and we're very excited about that,
[00:07:41.070]other facilities being finished on campus,
[00:07:43.237]and by the way our bowling team just moved
[00:07:45.789]into its new home in the East Union.
[00:07:48.958]We've cut the ribbon, all that new facility
[00:07:51.670]for our world-class bowling team in Husker athletics
[00:07:55.940]just about a week and a half ago.
[00:07:57.380]So lots of good things happening,
[00:07:59.190]but it's most of all wonderful
[00:08:01.420]to have our students on campus this fall.
[00:08:04.530]Fantastic, great update,
[00:08:05.960]the campus has never looked better,
[00:08:07.460]the leaves have been gorgeous the last couple of weeks.
[00:08:09.560]And as always Chancellor, fantastic to catch up with you
[00:08:12.730]and give us an update on the university,
