- [00:00:04.650]Hi, my name is Derek Guyton.
- [00:00:06.390]My name is Kamryn Sannicks.
- [00:00:08.360]Hey, my name is Ibraheem Hamza
- [00:00:10.020]and I'm a first year medical student
- [00:00:11.510]at The University of Chicago.
- [00:00:13.670]Hi, my name is Hunter Traynor.
- [00:00:15.210]I'm a second year law student here
- [00:00:16.680]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:18.450]Professor Combs, embodied
- [00:00:20.580]excellence, growth and service
- [00:00:22.660]by pushing students to find their full potential
- [00:00:24.890]and not giving up no matter how long that process took
- [00:00:28.410]Dr. Combs embodied what it meant to inspire a community.
- [00:00:31.800]The first sentence he ever said to me was
- [00:00:33.460]good afternoon scholar
- [00:00:35.010]a sentence, that not only indicated in expectation,
- [00:00:38.090]but also respect for my capabilities.
- [00:00:40.430]A few years ago, I had the pleasure
- [00:00:42.010]of learning from Dr. Combs
- [00:00:43.330]in his African-American politics class.
- [00:00:45.640]He embodied everything that you would want in an instructor.
- [00:00:49.070]He taught us scholars how to
- [00:00:50.940]hold true to our personal convictions,
- [00:00:52.970]but disagree with people
- [00:00:54.170]in a way that brought folks together rather
- [00:00:56.350]than push people apart.
- [00:00:57.440]And those lessons stick with me to this day
- [00:00:59.910]that made me a better student.
- [00:01:01.220]They made me a better citizen
- [00:01:02.550]and they made me a better person.
- [00:01:04.130]And I feel very fortunate
- [00:01:05.390]to have met and learned from Dr. Combs
- [00:01:08.070]Dr. Combs embodied the values of excellence, growth
- [00:01:10.870]and a service by uplifting his community
- [00:01:13.210]in his roles as a professor and as a pastor
- [00:01:16.990]during his tenure, he affected change
- [00:01:18.960]not only across campus, but throughout Lincoln.
- [00:01:22.510]When interacting with Dr. Combs,
- [00:01:24.080]everyone was known as a scholar.
- [00:01:26.690]If he began calling you by your name,
- [00:01:28.550]you knew you had made a great impact on him
- [00:01:30.510]and that you had earned a place in his heart.
- [00:01:32.880]Dr. Combs always fought for what he believed in
- [00:01:35.320]and worked tirelessly to make a difference.
- [00:01:38.290]In my time, knowing Dr. Combs
- [00:01:40.060]he always had words of wisdom and encouragement to offer.
- [00:01:43.310]And with admirable wit and character,
- [00:01:45.960]even if you didn't know him well
- [00:01:47.690]he would do whatever he could to help you.
- [00:01:49.580]Even if that meant just listening.
- [00:01:51.770]Dr. Combs was a friend, my mentor, and a great professor.
- [00:01:55.730]Dr. Combs was a scholar of the highest order
- [00:01:58.420]and worked diligently to elevate his students
- [00:02:00.750]to equal standing.
- [00:02:02.110]His influence will always be felt at UNL and beyond.
- [00:02:04.900]I am a legacy of Dr. Combs
- [00:02:06.480]and every patient I would treat as a physician
- [00:02:08.570]will have him to thank for it.
- [00:02:10.750]My name is Patrice McMahon.
- [00:02:12.370]I'm the director of the University honors program.
- [00:02:15.460]I am so excited
- [00:02:17.520]about this student led organization
- [00:02:20.230]that honors the work and life of Michael Combs.
- [00:02:24.280]Michael Combs was my colleague
- [00:02:25.930]in the political science department
- [00:02:27.600]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:29.260]For about 20 years.
- [00:02:31.190]There were many things that I admired about Dr. Combs.
- [00:02:35.580]Mostly I appreciated his respect
- [00:02:37.840]for students and for teaching.
- [00:02:40.060]He always greeted his students as young scholars
- [00:02:43.770]for Dr. Combs. Everyone was a scholar in the making
- [00:02:47.340]even if they didn't realize it,
- [00:02:49.160]it was his mission, I think,
- [00:02:51.330]to ensure that everyone knew this
- [00:02:53.790]Dr. Combs was a fabulous teacher.
- [00:02:56.370]He was a great colleague and a really good person.
- [00:02:59.660]He also gave back to his community.
- [00:03:03.130]He was about community service.
- [00:03:06.790]I hope that every student
- [00:03:08.550]who becomes a Michael Combs honors scholar
- [00:03:12.450]will strive for excellence.
- [00:03:15.040]See everyone as complete people
- [00:03:17.630]and give back to their communities.
- [00:03:20.420]This is his legacy from my perspective,
- [00:03:23.260]and it is one we should all embrace.
- [00:03:26.010]And one, I will try my best to carry forward
- [00:03:29.490]Carry on the legacy.
- [00:03:31.700]Carry on the legacy.
- [00:03:33.690]Carry on the legacy.
- [00:03:35.230]Carry on the legacy.
