- [00:00:06.050]Wearing masks became a part of,
- [00:00:08.980]of the movement to protect people.
- [00:00:11.210]There were anti maskers during that time,
- [00:00:13.750]there were people who were concerned about business
- [00:00:15.860]and sports, and this was literally a hundred years ago
- [00:00:19.150]and my students started to see,
- [00:00:21.047]"Oh wait, we have been here before."
- [00:00:23.452](upbeat music)
- [00:00:26.580]Black people tend to be disproportionately poor
- [00:00:29.890]in many of those areas.
- [00:00:31.920]They also do the frontline work.
- [00:00:34.400]In New York, like many places,
- [00:00:35.960]people didn't have access to masks.
- [00:00:37.940]There was conflicting information.
- [00:00:40.490]The African American community historically has had,
- [00:00:43.280]let's just say a distrustful relationship
- [00:00:45.850]to the medical industry.
- [00:00:47.340]And so all of these factors,
- [00:00:49.050]in addition to sometimes you go into places
- [00:00:51.340]and you are not treated respectfully
- [00:00:53.820]or given on the kinds of care medication that you need.
- [00:00:59.200]It literally was the perfect recipe for disaster
- [00:01:03.850]when it came to black communities, brown communities.
- [00:01:06.650]And in the Midwest, I think we see this in Indian country
- [00:01:09.440]and particularly with the Navajo Nation
- [00:01:11.690]that has been greatly impacted.
- [00:01:13.941](upbeat music)
- [00:01:17.150]The fact of the matter is someone in Hollywood,
- [00:01:19.730]someone in HBO paid attention
- [00:01:22.330]and they were able to weave this into an entertaining story
- [00:01:25.971]based on the past, based on something that's factual.
- [00:01:30.730]So that was really,
- [00:01:32.220]really quite enjoyable for a few moments
- [00:01:34.340]before I had to go Grit again.
- [00:01:36.098](transitional music beat)
