- [00:00:01.200]In this scenario,
- [00:00:02.260]let's say you're a grower in Nebraska,
- [00:00:04.870]and you're interested in looking
- [00:00:06.130]at the broccoli variety Arcadia.
- [00:00:10.030]So we filtered by our variety here on the right,
- [00:00:13.660]and we see the distribution of studies
- [00:00:16.070]is mostly on the coast,
- [00:00:18.130]a few studies in the Midwest and none in Nebraska.
- [00:00:21.510]How might you use this data
- [00:00:22.950]from these locations outside of Nebraska and the Midwest
- [00:00:26.510]to extrapolate results and make some predictions
- [00:00:29.970]about how this variety might perform on your farm?
- [00:00:34.500]To do this, we suggest using the soil texture
- [00:00:37.400]and aridity index filters.
- [00:00:40.620]When I filter by this variety,
- [00:00:42.610]we will note that the aridity index
- [00:00:44.940]is automatically filtered
- [00:00:46.750]and we see that all of these studies
- [00:00:49.490]were performed in humid conditions.
- [00:00:52.520]Let's look at soil texture.
- [00:00:55.020]On my farm, I know that I have silty loam soil,
- [00:00:59.090]so we can click this dropdown menu, uncheck all
- [00:01:04.430]and click silty loam.
- [00:01:10.510]This brings up results for studies
- [00:01:12.310]that were conducted on silty loam soil.
- [00:01:15.430]We see that on the coast here in Maine,
- [00:01:19.390]our relative yield was negative 18.9%,
- [00:01:24.520]here in Virginia, 2.2%,
- [00:01:28.909]negative 40% in Pennsylvania,
- [00:01:31.590]negative 31 in Indiana,
- [00:01:35.470]and 12.1 here in Washington.
- [00:01:39.320]So we'll note that these (indistinct) values
- [00:01:41.250]are on the lower side for these areas
- [00:01:44.000]with similar soil texture and aridity
- [00:01:47.370]and if we take a look at the graph,
- [00:01:50.450]we'll see that Arcadia
- [00:01:52.300]has a moderate relative yield potential.
- [00:01:55.550]The upper and lower relative yield values
- [00:01:58.410]are closer together, negative 20% for lower, 2% for upper.
- [00:02:03.520]We can see that this cultivar
- [00:02:05.510]is relatively broadly adapted to different environments,
- [00:02:09.370]and that it's likely to perform about the same
- [00:02:13.540]as other varieties in these studies.
