- [00:00:05.400]Hello, my name is Rick Alloway.
- [00:00:07.150]I'm an Associate Professor of Broadcasting
- [00:00:08.939]in the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:00:13.710]It's been a pleasure to be part of the university's
- [00:00:15.416]Celebration of Service for the past several years
- [00:00:18.440]to help recognize service from hundreds
- [00:00:21.320]of valued university colleagues.
- [00:00:23.299]In this disruptive year when it's not possible
- [00:00:26.077]for us to gather in one space and at one time,
- [00:00:29.277]it's still important to recognize that time
- [00:00:32.190]with our annual review in five year increments
- [00:00:34.839]of the historical events that were current events
- [00:00:37.830]when our honored employees began their career journeys
- [00:00:40.810]at UNL.
- [00:00:42.017]Let's begin our stroll down short term memory lane
- [00:00:45.490]with a look just a few years back
- [00:00:47.277]as we honor those who are celebrating
- [00:00:49.660]their five year employment anniversaries this year.
- [00:00:52.755]We begin our journey in 2015, a year of movement and change.
- [00:00:57.838]It was a year of movement in negotiations.
- [00:01:00.579]After six years of discussion, 195 countries
- [00:01:03.960]at the Paris Climate Change Summit endorsed a new agreement
- [00:01:07.880]to aggressively reduce climate change.
- [00:01:10.200]After seven years of negotiations,
- [00:01:12.339]the US and 11 other countries finally reached agreement
- [00:01:16.170]on the Transpacific Partnership.
- [00:01:17.896]And after 13 years, negotiations finally culminated
- [00:01:22.930]in an agreement limiting Iran's nuclear program.
- [00:01:26.136]It was a year of movement in science.
- [00:01:28.795]NASA's Horizon spacecraft moved past Pluto,
- [00:01:32.477]taking breathtaking photos on the way.
- [00:01:35.117]And NASA confirmed the presence of water on Mars.
- [00:01:38.756]It was a year of movement in equality.
- [00:01:42.120]The United States Supreme court affirmed same sex marriage.
- [00:01:45.896]Canada's Prime Minister appointed a gender neutral cabinet.
- [00:01:49.694]And Libby Lane became the Church of England's
- [00:01:52.480]first female Bishop.
- [00:01:54.530]In Nebraska, the legislature moved to ban the death penalty.
- [00:01:57.879]Inmates in the Tecumseh Correctional Facility moved
- [00:02:01.020]throughout that facility during the riot.
- [00:02:03.610]And in Lincoln, several residents of the North
- [00:02:06.060]and South Bottoms had to move in a hurry
- [00:02:08.040]because the floodwaters were approaching the top
- [00:02:10.690]of the levies.
- [00:02:11.619]On campus, the Husker volleyball team kept on moving
- [00:02:15.000]to its first National Championship.
- [00:02:17.000]The movement on the football team was
- [00:02:19.320]in the head coaching position as Mike Riley moved in.
- [00:02:22.541]The UNL campus completed a move that shifted the management
- [00:02:26.410]of the University Health Center to UNMC
- [00:02:28.163]and its primary clinical partner, Nebraska Health.
- [00:02:31.817]And in August of that year,
- [00:02:33.283]Jean Cops proved you should keep moving
- [00:02:35.980]by completing her undergraduate degree at age 87.
- [00:02:40.870]Fortunately for the university,
- [00:02:42.019]some of the movement that year was
- [00:02:43.590]by a number of new employees
- [00:02:44.920]moving to the campus to start their careers.
- [00:02:48.010]And five years later,
- [00:02:49.350]they are our first group being recognized
- [00:02:51.057]in this year's Celebration of Service.
- [00:02:54.100]We recognize and thank them for not moving, but for staying
- [00:02:57.510]and making the campus a better place.
- [00:03:01.289](upbeat music)
- [00:03:04.530]In 2010, an earthquake in Haiti killed 230,000
- [00:03:08.850]and destroyed most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
- [00:03:11.800]A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the South island
- [00:03:15.790]of New Zealand, causing widespread damage
- [00:03:18.370]and several power outages.
- [00:03:20.179]An explosion at the Deep Water Horizon drilling rig
- [00:03:23.590]killed 11 and caused a massive oil spill
- [00:03:26.430]in the Gulf of Mexico.
- [00:03:28.056]And so much ash poured from the Icelandic volcano
- [00:03:31.490]that I can't begin to pronounce
- [00:03:32.883]that airspace over much of Europe had to be closed
- [00:03:35.740]for a while.
- [00:03:37.260]After a search lasting 200 years,
- [00:03:39.041]the remains of Polish astronomer Nicholas Copernicus
- [00:03:42.150]were discovered only to be reburied.
- [00:03:45.139]After a 54 year run, the soap opera As the World Turns
- [00:03:48.750]aired its last episode.
- [00:03:50.620]Conan O'Brien's run as host of The Tonight Show
- [00:03:53.140]didn't last quite as long,
- [00:03:54.730]as Jay Leno took the job back that year.
- [00:03:57.010]The the box office,
- [00:03:58.810]the year's big movies included Toy Story Three,
- [00:04:01.600]Despicable Me, Inception, The King's Speech
- [00:04:04.579]and the seventh installment
- [00:04:05.939]in a series that seem to have gone on long enough
- [00:04:08.630]to be called Harry Potter in His Retirement Nest Egg.
- [00:04:12.938]Google Trek came to the UNL campus in 2010
- [00:04:16.560]for a more traditional trek,
- [00:04:18.000]UNL students could visit the new outdoor adventure center
- [00:04:20.700]which opened its expanded 13,000 square foot facility.
- [00:04:24.040]And university communications teamed
- [00:04:26.440]with information services to complete a digital trek
- [00:04:29.600]to a new E-newsletter called UNL Announce.
- [00:04:33.098]It was the year we lost movie stars Tony Curtis,
- [00:04:36.150]Dennis Hopper, and Patricia Neal,
- [00:04:38.130]TV stars Robert Culp, Art Linkletter and Tom Bosley,
- [00:04:41.496]politicians Alexander Haig, John Murtha, and Robert Bird,
- [00:04:45.840]and coaches John Wooden and Sparky Anderson.
- [00:04:48.639]We also said goodbye to JD Salinger
- [00:04:51.470]who wrote The Catcher in the Rye,
- [00:04:52.858]and UNL's own Ted Sorenson
- [00:04:55.270]who wrote speeches for John F. Kennedy.
- [00:04:58.630]It was the year of the first generation iPad.
- [00:05:01.097]And for an older generation,
- [00:05:02.650]Lincoln was voted by US News and World Report
- [00:05:05.310]as one of the 10 best places in the country to retire.
- [00:05:08.334]Fortunately for us, retirement was the last thing
- [00:05:11.270]on the minds of our next group of honored employees.
- [00:05:13.475]In 2010, they started their careers at UNL.
- [00:05:16.727]And 10 years later, here they are.
- [00:05:22.020](upbeat music)
- [00:05:25.631]2005 was also a year of momentous breaking news events.
- [00:05:29.810]Pope John Paul II died and more than 4 million people
- [00:05:33.260]traveled to the Vatican to mourn him.
- [00:05:34.994]The North Korean government admitted having nuclear weapons
- [00:05:38.195]for protection from the US, they claimed.
- [00:05:40.659]A terrorist attack on the London underground left 50 dead
- [00:05:44.350]and 700 injured.
- [00:05:45.737]It was a year of gains and losses in terms of civil rights.
- [00:05:49.758]We gained the nation's first African American
- [00:05:52.550]Secretary of State when Congress confirmed
- [00:05:55.070]Condoleezza Rice's appointment in January,
- [00:05:57.278]and the nation's first Hispanic Attorney General
- [00:06:00.010]when Alberto Gonzalez was confirmed the following month.
- [00:06:03.139]In October, we lost a civil rights icon, Rosa Parks,
- [00:06:07.070]who refused to give up her seat on the bus in 1955
- [00:06:09.635]and became a symbol of the modern civil rights movement.
- [00:06:12.960]She passed away at age 92.
- [00:06:14.937]It was a year of devastating natural disasters.
- [00:06:18.035]Ten people were killed in a rain soaked landslide
- [00:06:21.080]in California
- [00:06:22.290]And in August, Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans
- [00:06:24.970]and the Gulf Coast, leaving 1,836 dead
- [00:06:27.395]and over 10,000 homeless.
- [00:06:30.249]In Nebraska, Governor Dave Heineman took the oath of office
- [00:06:33.550]and the helm of a state reeling from the effects
- [00:06:35.710]of a recession,
- [00:06:36.654]though Lincoln's unemployment rate ranked second lowest
- [00:06:39.360]in the country at 4.1%.
- [00:06:42.354]Those same Lincolnites could not smoke in public places.
- [00:06:45.920]The Capitol city kept its tough no smoking policy,
- [00:06:48.396]though a statewide effort failed,
- [00:06:51.210]and the judge avoided the state's ban on same sex marriage.
- [00:06:55.850]On campus, interviews were underway
- [00:06:57.580]for a new Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs,
- [00:06:59.680]replacing the retiring Jim Greeson.
- [00:07:01.779]Dr, Juan Franco would accept the university's offer.
- [00:07:05.278]94 students headed to the Gulf
- [00:07:07.420]to help Hurricane Katrina cleanup efforts,
- [00:07:09.640]while ironically the USDA awarded
- [00:07:12.400]the university's drought research program $7.4 million
- [00:07:16.270]to study the effects of having too little water.
- [00:07:18.958]And a flood of a different sort was looming,
- [00:07:21.090]one of publicity, as the campus prepared
- [00:07:23.570]for the national spotlight
- [00:07:24.790]to shine on the arrival of a new freshman
- [00:07:26.739]named Tommy Lee.
- [00:07:28.921]It was the year of Star Wars Three, the movie,
- [00:07:31.838]Harry Potter Six, the book, and X-Box 360,
- [00:07:35.770]the excuse for not getting your homework done.
- [00:07:38.041]We learned the identity of Deep Throat that year.
- [00:07:40.473]We also learned it's possible to transplant a human face.
- [00:07:43.619]And we learned there is actually a 10th planet
- [00:07:46.500]in our solar system farther out than Pluto,
- [00:07:48.739]though it shows no signs of intelligent life.
- [00:07:52.410]Fortunately for the university,
- [00:07:53.700]there were ample indications of intelligent life that year
- [00:07:56.210]as displayed by our honored employees celebrating 15 years
- [00:07:58.836]of dedicated service to UNL this year.
- [00:08:03.717](upbeat music)
- [00:08:07.660]2000, ah, yes, the first year of the new millennium.
- [00:08:11.459]Or was it?
- [00:08:13.123]Regardless of which side of the 2000
- [00:08:15.459]versus 2001 debate you came down on,
- [00:08:18.942]everyone was relieved the dreaded Y2K bug didn't pan out
- [00:08:22.643]as feared.
- [00:08:23.859]One bug that did catch on, however, at least in Europe,
- [00:08:27.450]was Mad Cow Disease.
- [00:08:28.781]While in Africa, the battle was on
- [00:08:31.010]to slow the spread of AIDS
- [00:08:32.480]and the US pledged to commit a billion dollars to help.
- [00:08:36.206]Here at UNL, a $10.4 million research grant
- [00:08:39.518]from the National Institutes of Health
- [00:08:41.890]established a viral research center.
- [00:08:43.822]It was the year of the human genome project
- [00:08:46.750]that would map the human chromosome.
- [00:08:48.302]It was the year Yugoslavia would join the map
- [00:08:51.280]of the United Nations.
- [00:08:52.710]And it was the year the world would follow the path
- [00:08:54.750]across map of the little Cuban refugee, Ellian Gonzalez,
- [00:08:58.182]who was reunited with his family after being found
- [00:09:01.120]in the Atlantic Ocean.
- [00:09:02.585]President Bill Clinton expanded the National Park Service
- [00:09:05.443]while his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton,
- [00:09:08.020]expanded her political insights by declaring her candidacy
- [00:09:10.665]for the Senate race in New York.
- [00:09:13.465]Wildfire scorched nearly half a million acres of land
- [00:09:17.260]in the West, while in the East and other hot property,
- [00:09:19.960]the Broadway musical Cats closed after a record 18 year run.
- [00:09:23.865]The outcome of the US presidential election would result
- [00:09:27.022]in a bit of a long run as well,
- [00:09:28.870]with George W. Bush finally declared the winner a month
- [00:09:31.540]after election day.
- [00:09:32.622]And we were all introduced
- [00:09:34.360]to the concept of the hanging chad.
- [00:09:36.585]In Nebraska, personalized messages were offered
- [00:09:39.970]for Husker license plates, some of which probably showed up
- [00:09:42.660]in pictures taken by the cameras
- [00:09:44.082]the Attorney General authorized that year
- [00:09:46.630]for use at busy intersections.
- [00:09:48.345]It was a tough year for the state's crops.
- [00:09:51.470]Our record cold winter was followed by a severe drought.
- [00:09:54.083]But in spite of the extreme weather,
- [00:09:56.377]a crop of hardy, new employees took root here at UNL.
- [00:10:00.130]And we salute their 20 years of bountiful service this year.
- [00:10:06.721](upbeat music)
- [00:10:10.560]1995 is still fresh in at least some of our memories.
- [00:10:14.739]Ellian Gonzales was barely a year old.
- [00:10:17.241]Seinfeld, ER, Friends, and Mad About You
- [00:10:20.950]were the hot TV shows.
- [00:10:22.323]Some still are, but in syndication.
- [00:10:24.782]Gasoline cost a mere $1.26.
- [00:10:27.523]It was a year of earthshaking events,
- [00:10:30.110]like the 7.2 level earthquake that devastated Kobe, Japan.
- [00:10:33.374]Closer to home, the shock waves were from a bomb
- [00:10:36.810]that destroyed the Alfred P. Merle Federal Building
- [00:10:39.340]in Oklahoma city,
- [00:10:40.521]while the Capitol Mall in Washington, DC rumbled
- [00:10:42.975]with sounds of feet from Louis Farrakhan's
- [00:10:45.801]Million Man March,
- [00:10:47.459]and stadiums around the country reverberated
- [00:10:50.070]with hymns during the Promise Keepers rallies
- [00:10:53.330]In Nebraska, Holdridge was named one of
- [00:10:55.107]the 100 best small towns in America,
- [00:10:57.742]while the state's third largest city,
- [00:10:59.900]that would be Memorial Stadium on home game days,
- [00:11:02.339]enjoyed playing host
- [00:11:03.980]to another National Championship Husker football team.
- [00:11:07.410]The Board of Regions began a review of peer institutions
- [00:11:10.010]to compare faculty salaries and administrative costs.
- [00:11:12.921]And the internet was going great guns on the campus
- [00:11:15.317]until 200,000 gallons of water flooded the basement
- [00:11:18.739]of the Walter Scott engineering building,
- [00:11:21.490]disrupting internet service on campus
- [00:11:23.059]and across seven states.
- [00:11:25.401]The federal government ran out of money at year's end,
- [00:11:28.620]but luckily there was enough left
- [00:11:30.020]in state government coffers in 1995
- [00:11:32.041]to lure our next group of a hundred employees
- [00:11:35.120]to begin work at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:11:36.942]And now 25 years on,
- [00:11:39.102]they celebrate a quarter century of service.
- [00:11:44.038](upbeat music)
- [00:11:47.203]1990, a new decade which began in conflict.
- [00:11:51.081]Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait resulted first
- [00:11:54.880]in Operation Desert Shield
- [00:11:56.264]and then Operation Desert Storm.
- [00:11:58.585]Elsewhere in the world that year of violence erupted
- [00:12:01.810]in England over that country's poll tax,
- [00:12:03.641]East and West Germany were reunited
- [00:12:05.898]after years of separation,
- [00:12:07.865]while Nelson Mandela parted company
- [00:12:10.350]with the prison cell he had occupied for 27 years.
- [00:12:14.060]Boris Yeltsin was elected President
- [00:12:16.000]of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic.
- [00:12:19.240]Mary Robinson became the first female President
- [00:12:21.545]of the Irish Republic,
- [00:12:23.401]while Nebraska's female Chief of State,
- [00:12:25.545]Governor Kayor, played host to president George Bush
- [00:12:28.883]as supporters dug into their pockets
- [00:12:30.970]to attend a political fundraiser.
- [00:12:33.260]And Sue Hendrickson did some digging of a different sort,
- [00:12:35.543]unearthing a 50 foot, female Tyrannosaurus Rex
- [00:12:38.963]in South Dakota.
- [00:12:40.890]That T-Rex was 65 million years old,
- [00:12:43.521]bringing perspective to those UNL employees
- [00:12:46.025]who feel like they've been around forever.
- [00:12:48.141]Well, it has been 30 years.
- [00:12:54.105](upbeat music)
- [00:12:57.120]1985 was a big year for benefit concerts.
- [00:12:59.961]The first Farm Aid concert brought national attention
- [00:13:02.799]to the plight of America's food providers,
- [00:13:05.170]while Bob Geldof's live AID benefit,
- [00:13:07.363]and the song We Are the World tried to provide food
- [00:13:10.630]to those in Africa and elsewhere who were struggling
- [00:13:13.300]with famine.
- [00:13:14.217]Mikhail Gorbachev became General Secretary
- [00:13:16.723]of the Communist party in the USSR,
- [00:13:19.001]while Daniel Ortega became President of Nicaragua.
- [00:13:22.803]In Nebraska, a 47 year old Omaha woman
- [00:13:25.850]became the state's first heart transplant patient,
- [00:13:27.843]while the legislature wrestled with the weighty decision
- [00:13:31.040]of whether or not to make the paddle fish the state fish.
- [00:13:36.270]At UNL, $60 million in renovation and building projects
- [00:13:39.483]were sprucing up the look of the campus.
- [00:13:41.842]The WIC Alumni Center opened
- [00:13:43.810]while the land acquisition process was underway
- [00:13:46.160]for a new performing arts venue
- [00:13:48.350]to be called The Lead Center.
- [00:13:50.847]It was the year AIDS first made the cover of Time Magazine.
- [00:13:54.264]The year we first heard the ozone layer over the South Pole
- [00:13:57.305]was thinning,
- [00:13:58.425]the year Nintendo launched its first video game console,
- [00:14:01.422]opening whole new windows for entertainment
- [00:14:03.843]and carpal tunnel syndrome.
