Science with Professor Plant – Beck Young
Do you have an interest in studying soil? Becky Young, assistant professor of practice in agronomy and horticulture, explains what soil is, what soil scientists do and what careers are available for soil scientists. Check out Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln where you can shape a career in plants, soils and landscape systems.

[00:00:07.610]Have you ever thought about what soil is
[00:00:10.110]and how it impacts your life?
[00:00:11.770]Soil is a mixture of organic matter,
[00:00:14.030]minerals, air, and water,
[00:00:15.430]and supports almost all life on Earth.
[00:00:18.240]I'm Becky Young, an assistant professor of practice
[00:00:20.860]in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
[00:00:22.720]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
[00:00:24.720]Studying soil is such a fun field.
[00:00:26.870]I teach a soil science class called Soil Resources
[00:00:30.040]both in person and online at the university.
[00:00:33.360]And I also coach the Collegiate Soil Judging Team.
[00:00:37.050]I think soils are incredibly fascinating
[00:00:39.240]because their profiles offer a picture
[00:00:41.250]into the past, how climate and vegetation
[00:00:43.820]have acted upon the landscape throughout time.
[00:00:46.700]And soil scientists are still working
[00:00:49.050]to uncover all of its secrets,
[00:00:51.020]like identifying climate change relationships
[00:00:53.370]and discovering new microbial species.
[00:00:56.120]Lots of people assume soil scientists
[00:00:58.370]just like to play in the dirt,
[00:01:00.120]dig holes, and grow gardens.
[00:01:02.550]And while that might be true for some of us,
[00:01:05.300]there's a wide variety of people
[00:01:07.000]that work with, research and study soil
[00:01:10.810]like science teachers,
[00:01:12.030]environmental engineers, conservationists,
[00:01:14.570]crop specialists, National Park Service employees,
[00:01:17.980]and even forensic scientists
[00:01:19.360]and consultants to archeologists.
[00:01:21.480]All of us are incredibly passionate
[00:01:23.210]and driven to understand soils complexities,
[00:01:25.830]and work to find ways to improve
[00:01:27.670]and protect this vital natural resource.
[00:01:30.590]Do you have an interest in studying soil?
[00:01:32.980]Then check out agronomy and horticulture at Nebraska,
[00:01:35.720]where you can shape a career in plants,
[00:01:37.970]soils and landscape systems.
