- [00:00:00.000]My hands during this entire thing.
- [00:00:01.707](many laughing)
- [00:00:02.540]Yeah, absolutely.
- [00:00:03.500]OK (he laughs).
- [00:00:04.333]So. That's a whole,
- [00:00:05.410]that's a whole other level. That's a whole other level.
- [00:00:06.466]Yeah (group laughing).
- [00:00:07.397](upbeat music)
- [00:00:12.090]Hey, everyone.
- [00:00:12.923]My name is An.
- [00:00:13.760]Welcome to New Student Enrollment.
- [00:00:15.510]So today, we want to talk to you a little bit
- [00:00:17.227]about the transition from high school to college,
- [00:00:20.050]specifically with regards to academics, and to do that,
- [00:00:23.460]we brought here with us today Dr. Kathy Castle,
- [00:00:26.290]who's from the Communication Studies Department.
- [00:00:29.110]Happy to be here with you, An.
- [00:00:34.610]So, starting college can be really exciting,
- [00:00:37.420]but also kind of scary at the same time
- [00:00:39.350]just because all of the experiences that you have
- [00:00:41.990]and all of the expectations they just change a lot
- [00:00:45.170]from college to high school.
- [00:00:46.820]A big example of this is time management.
- [00:00:49.310]So, in high school, you have a lot of your classes
- [00:00:52.340]outlined for you.
- [00:00:53.173]You're going through the same routine every day.
- [00:00:55.040]Even your extracurriculars are pretty much the same
- [00:00:57.350]every day, but coming to college,
- [00:00:59.400]you kind of have to do that all for yourself
- [00:01:01.130]without the help of a teacher or parent the entire time.
- [00:01:05.030]So how would you describe the differences
- [00:01:08.170]between high school and college structure?
- [00:01:11.390]I think one of the biggest differences
- [00:01:12.560]between the structure of a high school day
- [00:01:14.380]and a college day is the gap of time
- [00:01:16.550]that you often find yourself with between your classes.
- [00:01:19.800]So in high school, you're going from class to class,
- [00:01:21.860]and as you mentioned, things are really structured,
- [00:01:24.020]but when you get into the college environment,
- [00:01:26.150]you have this gap of time that you can choose to use
- [00:01:30.340]in a lot of different ways, and so, using it in order
- [00:01:33.170]to help you get further in your classes
- [00:01:35.500]and work on your schoolwork is really one of the challenges
- [00:01:38.460]that students have because it feels
- [00:01:39.820]like suddenly we're free (she laughs),
- [00:01:41.910]but that time is really valuable for students
- [00:01:44.430]to use in that way.
- [00:01:45.630]So, it's recognizing what needs to be done
- [00:01:47.420]and how much time you need to accomplish that goal.
- [00:01:51.040]That's a good point because now students are in college,
- [00:01:54.540]they want more free time, and they are able
- [00:01:56.540]to make those decisions for themselves without the guidance
- [00:01:58.890]of a parent or a teacher around, but, as students,
- [00:02:02.470]how do they make the most out of their free time
- [00:02:04.780]and use it wisely?
- [00:02:06.270]So, I think the first thing
- [00:02:07.650]I would suggest students do is take a hard look at due dates
- [00:02:11.380]and take a look at all the things that they have going on
- [00:02:13.490]across all their classes and put together a master calendar
- [00:02:17.260]of due dates and a projected amount of time
- [00:02:20.300]that they might need to complete things.
- [00:02:22.320]It helps them to get a really good,
- [00:02:23.780]clear picture of the things that are due for the semester,
- [00:02:26.760]and they can plan their time out from there.
- [00:02:28.860]It's also important for students to keep in mind
- [00:02:30.920]that, in college, 80% of the work
- [00:02:33.170]that they're gonna do falls
- [00:02:34.610]outside the classroom environment, whereas in high school,
- [00:02:37.230]sometimes you have time in class to work on things.
- [00:02:39.720]In college, that's not the case,
- [00:02:42.070]so you have to allow for that time outside of class.
- [00:02:44.860]I know my first year, I really struggled a lot
- [00:02:47.200]with using a planner.
- [00:02:48.580]It just was not the method for me,
- [00:02:50.810]and I talked to a faculty member about it,
- [00:02:52.840]and she actually gave me some suggestions
- [00:02:54.430]for different ways that would work,
- [00:02:56.360]and I'm still kind of messing around with them
- [00:02:58.150]and seeing what works best for me
- [00:02:59.410]because everyone uses a different method.
- [00:03:05.930]The next thing that I kind of want to discuss is I believe
- [00:03:08.960]that there's kind of a myth around the difference
- [00:03:11.300]between college professors and high school teachers,
- [00:03:15.120]and some people find coming into college
- [00:03:17.150]that the professors are unapproachable
- [00:03:19.660]or maybe a little intimidating,
- [00:03:21.570]and personally, I've never had a bad interaction
- [00:03:24.120]with a faculty member.
- [00:03:25.370]Sure, I didn't have a very close connection
- [00:03:27.360]with every single one of them, but I could tell
- [00:03:29.480]that every one of them really cared about teaching students.
- [00:03:33.220]So, from your perspective
- [00:03:36.000]how do you view your interactions with students?
- [00:03:39.070]We don't want to see you fall behind,
- [00:03:40.700]so emailing us, keeping up on top of things,
- [00:03:43.500]stopping by office hours, getting the help you need
- [00:03:46.450]helps us know that you're engaged.
- [00:03:53.120]So you'll often hear in college
- [00:03:54.710]that going over the syllabus is a great way
- [00:03:56.750]to set yourself up for success in a class.
- [00:03:59.080]Can you tell me a little more
- [00:04:00.080]about what a syllabus is exactly?
- [00:04:02.370]A syllabus is basically a contract that professors create
- [00:04:07.150]in their classes to help students see
- [00:04:09.560]what we're going to be covering, what's the content,
- [00:04:11.810]when are things gonna be due,
- [00:04:12.970]what are the policies of the class,
- [00:04:15.000]which some students are surprised to learn may differ
- [00:04:17.570]from one class to another.
- [00:04:19.200]So when you're in a class, one of the things
- [00:04:21.910]that you'll need to do is make sure you're comfortable
- [00:04:23.920]and familiar with course policies and expectations.
- [00:04:27.360]The syllabus lays all of that out,
- [00:04:29.250]and I would encourage any student who's reviewing a syllabus
- [00:04:32.080]who has questions to be sure
- [00:04:33.370]they're asking those questions early in a class.
- [00:04:36.170]As you look at the syllabus, you're gonna see policies
- [00:04:38.890]around different things like a late assignment policy.
- [00:04:42.550]I know sometimes in high school
- [00:04:44.160]it's normal for a student to maybe be able
- [00:04:47.270]to turn some work in late.
- [00:04:49.150]In college, you may have some professors
- [00:04:51.860]that are comfortable accepting late work
- [00:04:53.440]with a penalty up to a certain date,
- [00:04:55.420]and you may have others that will not accept late work,
- [00:04:58.470]so it's really important for you to understand policies
- [00:05:01.160]like that and how they're different,
- [00:05:03.000]from not only high school, but from one class to the other.
- [00:05:06.010]So the syllabus is a really important document
- [00:05:08.950]for a student to pay attention to
- [00:05:10.540]and refer to throughout the semester.
- [00:05:17.460]Well, thanks Kathy, for answering all of my questions
- [00:05:19.880]and providing these awesome insights to all
- [00:05:21.530]of our brand new Huskers.
- [00:05:23.100]Do you have any last pieces of advice
- [00:05:24.930]that you might want to give them?
- [00:05:26.610]Yeah, you can succeed here.
- [00:05:28.290]We are excited to have you here.
- [00:05:30.160]We're here to support you.
- [00:05:31.740]Take the time, partner with your professors,
- [00:05:34.870]and go Big Red.
- [00:05:37.861]Yeah, that's what you told me to say.
- [00:05:40.375]I'm sorry (she laughs).
