- [00:00:03.817]We are located outside of Ogalalla, NE
- [00:00:05.825]which is four and a half hours west of
- [00:00:07.812]Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:00:09.293]Cedar Point is a field research station
- [00:00:11.195]and an experiential classroom that is
- [00:00:13.428]owned by UNL for students like you to take
- [00:00:15.805]classes throughout the summer.
- [00:00:17.820]The station sits in the middle of the
- [00:00:19.980]western high plains region of the US and
- [00:00:22.500]is near tall and short grass prairies.
- [00:00:25.042]Also, the sandhills, which are a unique
- [00:00:27.725]ecosystem to Nebraska, lie just to the
- [00:00:30.725]north of the campus.
- [00:00:32.402]The station is also near the North Platte
- [00:00:34.886]River valley, Lake Ogallala, and
- [00:00:37.029]Lake McConaughy.
- [00:00:38.782]The diverse landscapes that surround the
- [00:00:40.707]station provide many extraordinary
- [00:00:42.562]opportunities to explore native flora and
- [00:00:45.328]fauna unique to the Cedar Point experience.
- [00:01:08.146]Throughout the summer, many courses are
- [00:01:10.176]offered here that can fulfill ACE and
- [00:01:12.542]degree requirements. These courses are
- [00:01:15.112]unique in the fact that students can spend
- [00:01:17.194]more time out in the field and the lab
- [00:01:19.422]rather than in lectures. These courses are
- [00:01:22.209]primarily taught by faculty from the
- [00:01:24.768]School of Biological Sciences.
- [00:01:26.975]The incredible flora and fauna surrounding
- [00:01:29.157]Cedar Point also allow for students to
- [00:01:31.385]take courses regarding humanities in
- [00:01:33.270]nature. These courses can fulfill ACE 5
- [00:01:35.916]and ACE 7 requirements.
- [00:01:38.336]During the summer, courses are split into
- [00:01:40.410]four, 3 week sessions. Depending on the
- [00:01:42.909]class you can earn up to 3 or 4 credits
- [00:01:45.444]towards your degree. The 3 credit classes
- [00:01:48.214]last two weeks, while the 4 credit classes
- [00:01:51.050]last three weeks.
- [00:01:52.314]A few classes you will find taught at
- [00:01:54.173]Cedar Point include second semester
- [00:01:56.021]general biology, field epidemiology, and
- [00:01:59.202]predator ecology.
- [00:02:01.155]Our paid internship program,
- [00:02:03.165]Cedar Point Works, enables you to work for
- [00:02:05.864]10 weeks and covers your food and housing
- [00:02:08.271]expenses while you take a Cedar Point
- [00:02:10.628]course. We also offer 20 to 40 food and
- [00:02:14.506]housing scholarships each year.
- [00:02:17.015]Classes at Cedar Point are always small,
- [00:02:19.411]enabling you to build strong connections
- [00:02:21.651]with your peers, TAs, and professors.
- [00:02:24.732]Several biological courses also focus on
- [00:02:27.640]student based research and provide
- [00:02:29.655]students with the opportunity to create
- [00:02:31.606]experiments and ask questions.
- [00:02:33.847]ACE 10 courses taught at Cedar Point
- [00:02:36.174]provide this experience and also allow
- [00:02:38.197]the possibility for the students to
- [00:02:39.861]publish their work.
- [00:02:41.078]Many students over the years will agree
- [00:02:43.349]that their time at Cedar Point was the
- [00:02:45.187]highlight of their educational experience
- [00:02:47.365]at the Nebraska and helped them discover
- [00:02:49.321]new opportunities in their career field.
- [00:03:08.286]If you take a class out at Cedar Point,
- [00:03:10.339]you will be housed at the station in
- [00:03:12.253]rustic cabins that are tucked away in red
- [00:03:14.432]cedar canyons, and will be fed by our
- [00:03:16.511]lovely kitchen staff.
- [00:03:18.557]When you are not in class, there are many
- [00:03:20.505]activities to do and places to explore.
- [00:03:23.026]You can kayak or canoe on
- [00:03:24.563]Lake Ogallala, hike across our almost
- [00:03:26.809]1,000 acres of Nebraska prairie, swim in
- [00:03:29.507]Lake McConaughy, camp on the beach, or go
- [00:03:32.600]into town for dinner.
- [00:03:34.533]Cedar Point is a unique and extraordinary
- [00:03:36.780]place to live, learn, and explore during
- [00:03:39.276]your summer, and the memories you create
- [00:03:41.404]here will last a lifetime.
