- [00:00:08.310]Hi, we'd like to welcome you to the
- [00:00:10.100]College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
- [00:00:14.930]college session.
- [00:00:16.470]We are so glad that you were able to join us.
- [00:00:25.540]As we navigate this time uncertainty,
- [00:00:27.550]we want to make sure that you are keeping up to date
- [00:00:30.410]with the most accurate information
- [00:00:32.300]regarding our current situation and what that might mean
- [00:00:36.410]for the fall semester.
- [00:00:38.140]Please visit this COVID website for the latest information.
- [00:00:48.766]First, we want to introduce you
- [00:00:50.690]to some of our key people within
- [00:00:53.540]the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
- [00:00:57.490]First, Tiffany Heng-Moss is our Dean.
- [00:01:00.490]Nicole Frerichs is the Assistant Dean
- [00:01:02.590]for Student Success, and she will work
- [00:01:04.930]with Student Success Transition,
- [00:01:07.520]and will be one of the teachers for the CASNR Start Smart
- [00:01:11.820]which you'll learn about here in a little bit.
- [00:01:19.490]Next, we have Karen Jackson, who is the
- [00:01:21.930]Coordinator of Advising and Academic Program Enhancement.
- [00:01:25.840]Karen has likely emailed you or you have seen her name
- [00:01:29.890]on some of our new student enrollment materials
- [00:01:32.920]because she is our New Student Enrollment Coordinator.
- [00:01:35.800]She will review your transfer credit
- [00:01:39.120]should you have some coming in,
- [00:01:41.180]or if you're looking to take a course
- [00:01:43.900]over future summers and want to make sure
- [00:01:46.850]that that counts for your degree requirement,
- [00:01:49.420]Karen is your go to person for that.
- [00:01:51.650]And she also has coordinates our campus advising.
- [00:01:55.430]So if you don't have an academic advisor assigned to you,
- [00:01:59.302]once school starts, you'll reach out to Karen.
- [00:02:03.410]Megan Schaefer's name will become very familiar.
- [00:02:06.500]She's our Student Development Coordinator.
- [00:02:08.810]She will be sending weekly emails to you
- [00:02:11.120]once school begins in August
- [00:02:13.920]called Megan's Insider Connections that will have all
- [00:02:17.440]of the information of things going on on campus,
- [00:02:20.900]as well as scholarships and just different things
- [00:02:24.100]that you'll want to be aware of.
- [00:02:26.110]Megan also coordinates our CASNR Cares program
- [00:02:30.260]and will also be teaching the CASNR Start Smart.
- [00:02:39.870]We are lucky to have two amazing people
- [00:02:42.730]help our students with career services.
- [00:02:46.290]So Julie Bray-Obermeyer is our
- [00:02:48.450]Career Development and Corporate Relations Director.
- [00:02:51.870]Marybeth Helmink is at split position.
- [00:02:54.730]So part of her time,
- [00:02:55.750]she's here with us working as a career coach
- [00:02:59.220]and then the other time she is also advising.
- [00:03:03.270]So both of these ladies would be able to help you
- [00:03:05.630]with career services, anything that relates to that,
- [00:03:09.320]so thinking about your resume, cover letters
- [00:03:12.560]applying for on campus jobs, internships,
- [00:03:16.600]anything in that realm,
- [00:03:18.490]these two would love to help you out.
- [00:03:27.380]So next we have Ramona Miller
- [00:03:29.130]who is going to be the first point of contact
- [00:03:32.198]when you come into the Dean's office
- [00:03:34.560]or when you call into the Dean's office.
- [00:03:37.100]Most of you should be hearing from Ramona this summer
- [00:03:41.320]as she will be calling each of our students
- [00:03:43.480]to welcome you to the CASNR community
- [00:03:46.660]and answer any questions that you have.
- [00:03:49.240]So Mo will be your person to go to
- [00:03:51.360]if you need to update your degree program, add a minor,
- [00:03:55.320]declare a concentration,
- [00:03:57.536]or we hear that she also has candy
- [00:04:01.370]up at the front desk too.
- [00:04:03.090]So if you just need to get your little chocolate fix
- [00:04:05.940]or candy fix,
- [00:04:07.040]she'll be able to help you out.
- [00:04:08.830]And lastly, Jon Kerrigan
- [00:04:11.510]is our Global Engagement Coordinator.
- [00:04:13.870]So he can really help you explore what are your options
- [00:04:17.060]with education abroad,
- [00:04:18.580]how to make it fit into your degree program
- [00:04:21.560]and some opportunities to fund those experiences.
- [00:04:32.330]Our CASNR motto is that CASNR
- [00:04:34.800]is a community where everyone challenges themselves,
- [00:04:38.960]is inclusive,
- [00:04:40.460]asks bold questions,
- [00:04:42.530]co-create and is optimistic about the future.
- [00:04:46.470]Through our collective work, we positively change the lives
- [00:04:50.420]of our learners, Nebraskans and our global society.
- [00:04:55.350]You can come in and meet us in 103 Agricultural Hall.
- [00:05:06.080]Your new student enrollment advisor might be different
- [00:05:09.310]than your permanent advisor.
- [00:05:11.310]All advisor information will be assigned
- [00:05:13.790]by the start of the semester once you come to campus.
- [00:05:18.030]This information will be listed on your MyRed account.
- [00:05:21.630]And if for some reason that information is not there,
- [00:05:25.110]please contact our office.
- [00:05:27.870]So why might you meet with your advisor?
- [00:05:30.490]Your advisor can help with the obvious of class scheduling,
- [00:05:34.340]working out an academic plan or graduation plan,
- [00:05:38.790]but they can also help with career plans,
- [00:05:41.840]thinking outside of the box with your major,
- [00:05:45.380]serving as references,
- [00:05:46.920]and obviously helping you stay on track with graduation.
- [00:05:57.410]Some tips for our college students.
- [00:06:00.010]The first one is to get organized.
- [00:06:02.060]Keep a planner.
- [00:06:03.330]Whether that's paper or electronic,
- [00:06:05.580]figure out what works for you
- [00:06:07.640]and write down all of the important deadlines,
- [00:06:11.090]tests, quizzes, paper, projects
- [00:06:14.030]due dates, and keep track of the academic calendar
- [00:06:18.860]which can be found on the university's website.
- [00:06:22.630]You will want to make sure
- [00:06:23.680]that you check your email and check it often.
- [00:06:26.710]This will be @huskers.unl.edu
- [00:06:31.390]that you will receive from new student enrollment
- [00:06:35.250]after your scheduled new student enrollment date.
- [00:06:39.510]All of the university communication will be sent
- [00:06:42.510]to your Huskers account.
- [00:06:44.150]So it is important, again, to check it and check it often.
- [00:06:48.780]Professors, as well as Canvas will automatically send
- [00:06:53.100]information to this email.
- [00:06:55.680]And if you are missing anything,
- [00:06:57.520]be sure to check that junk folder.
- [00:07:06.250]It might seem obvious that we want you to attend classes
- [00:07:09.890]but what we really want to hit home here is
- [00:07:13.900]to be an active member of your classes.
- [00:07:17.210]Yes, we want you to show up,
- [00:07:18.750]but furthermore, we want you to be prepared,
- [00:07:21.120]have the content read in advance,
- [00:07:23.810]have questions prepared,
- [00:07:26.070]be ready to take the information that you're learning
- [00:07:30.820]in your lectures and go deeper with that.
- [00:07:36.150]Your instructors will all have office hours
- [00:07:39.330]or student hours that are just for you.
- [00:07:42.810]So what that means is they might have
- [00:07:46.150]two or three hours a week in their office,
- [00:07:49.640]just waiting for you to stop by and say hello,
- [00:07:53.110]get to know them more,
- [00:07:54.970]share your ideas or what you're feeling about their class,
- [00:07:58.690]ask some questions, study for a test,
- [00:08:02.050]anything like that.
- [00:08:03.890]Professors really appreciate when you can come
- [00:08:07.050]into their office or if it's on campus
- [00:08:10.520]and just talk about who you are
- [00:08:13.770]and what your degree program is
- [00:08:16.330]and get to know them a little bit better.
- [00:08:20.120]As a reminder,
- [00:08:21.090]academic dishonesty and plagiarism are not tolerated
- [00:08:24.700]at the university,
- [00:08:27.230]Next, getting involved.
- [00:08:28.910]The university has a ton of recognized student organizations
- [00:08:34.850]or RSOs as we like to call them.
- [00:08:38.130]CASNR alone has more than 50 organizations for you to join.
- [00:08:43.770]So really think about if it's something
- [00:08:46.390]you're passionate about or something that is major specific
- [00:08:51.980]and get involved.
- [00:08:53.160]We want you to be mindful not to get too involved.
- [00:08:57.460]We usually suggest one or two clubs your first semester.
- [00:09:01.800]And then as you're finding yourself
- [00:09:04.710]and being able to navigate that balance,
- [00:09:07.770]maybe add on one more.
- [00:09:10.270]We also have many opportunities for study abroad.
- [00:09:14.150]That can be anywhere from a week long
- [00:09:17.240]to a few weeks long to a semester or a year program too.
- [00:09:29.060]We'd love for you to connect via social media.
- [00:09:31.840]You can see our Facebook, Instagram,
- [00:09:33.940]and Twitter accounts here.
- [00:09:35.940]And then also please refer to your CASNR Start Smart course
- [00:09:40.090]or our welcome email for the invitation link
- [00:09:42.870]to our CASNR Undergraduate Slack channel.
- [00:09:46.960]Also stay tuned for Megan's Insider Connections.
- [00:09:50.580]You will get those automatically
- [00:09:52.380]every single Monday morning once classes begin.
- [00:10:03.650]Your My.UNL account is also known as your Canvas account.
- [00:10:08.470]So this is the account where all of your classes will be.
- [00:10:13.620]Some of them are not going to load
- [00:10:15.680]or be published until a few days before classes.
- [00:10:19.910]So if you log in right now and you're not seeing anything,
- [00:10:22.640]that's okay.
- [00:10:24.050]You'll claim this through your TrueYou account.
- [00:10:26.748]And the instructions to set this account up
- [00:10:30.190]will come from new student enrollment
- [00:10:32.390]after your scheduled NSC date.
- [00:10:36.120]Your MyRED is very important.
- [00:10:38.140]Please be sure that you update
- [00:10:39.640]all of your contact information, your phone and your email.
- [00:10:43.290]Your Huskers email will automatically populate
- [00:10:46.730]into your MyRED account,
- [00:10:48.560]but familiarize yourself with MyRED
- [00:10:51.990]as it's used for future course registration,
- [00:10:55.190]it's where your bill will be,
- [00:10:56.620]scholarships,
- [00:10:57.640]degree audits, and your degree planner.
- [00:11:06.750]Every incoming student will be enrolled
- [00:11:09.700]in the AGRI 042 CASNR Start Smart course.
- [00:11:14.040]This course is aligned with the framework
- [00:11:16.730]of the university's POWER modules.
- [00:11:20.030]So thinking about your purpose,
- [00:11:22.670]ownership, wellbeing, engagement,

- [00:12:10.330]This course includes quizzes,

- [00:12:20.630]and a practice uploading an assignment.
- [00:12:24.790]If you have any questions,
