- [00:00:00.000]Of course to help fill the void
- [00:00:01.510]the University of Nebraska Lincoln is partnering
- [00:00:03.480]with public schools to introduce students
- [00:00:05.810]to industry careers.
- [00:00:07.640]Dean of UNLs college of Ag sciences and natural resources,
- [00:00:10.880]Tiffany Heng-Moss joins us now
- [00:00:12.510]for a further look at the program.
- [00:00:14.300]Tiffany thanks for joining us here this morning.
- [00:00:16.440]Tell us about this partnership
- [00:00:17.960]and of course how things came about.
- [00:00:20.900]Sure well good morning Janet.
- [00:00:22.410]The early college and career education pathway program
- [00:00:26.610]that's focused on STEM is the first of its kind for
- [00:00:29.580]Nebraska and the college of agricultural sciences
- [00:00:32.830]and natural resources at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:35.840]is excited to partner with Lincoln public schools.
- [00:00:38.630]But more importantly we're excited for the opportunities
- [00:00:40.573]that it will provide to students and our state.
- [00:00:44.310]This program incorporates concepts around food,
- [00:00:47.540]energy, water, and societal systems,
- [00:00:50.560]into the math and science curriculum
- [00:00:53.020]for ninth and 10th grade students attending
- [00:00:54.707]Lincoln Northeast high school.
- [00:00:57.580]For 11th and 12th graders, we've designed
- [00:01:00.027]early college and career pathway programs
- [00:01:03.370]that are focused on the continuum of learners
- [00:01:05.560]that these students will be able to leverage.
- [00:01:07.520]So for example, for students that are interested
- [00:01:10.280]in pursuing a two or four year degree
- [00:01:12.520]after graduating from high school,
- [00:01:14.550]they can use this program to get a jump start
- [00:01:16.680]on their college education.
- [00:01:18.190]And then we've also thought about those students
- [00:01:21.456]that will enter the workforce after graduating
- [00:01:22.490]from high school and how we can position them
- [00:01:24.920]to have credentials that will make them
- [00:01:26.590]more competitive in the job market.
- [00:01:29.200]Why did you decide to launch this program in Lincoln
- [00:01:31.870]which is of course not as rural as many parts of the state?
- [00:01:36.220]Yeah Janet that's a great question.
- [00:01:38.420]For many years the college has had
- [00:01:40.370]a wonderful collaborative relationship
- [00:01:42.500]with Lincoln public schools
- [00:01:43.720]and this is really an outgrowth of that partnership.
- [00:01:46.230]And it's a wonderful opportunity
- [00:01:48.120]for us to advance our shared goals
- [00:01:51.030]around improving attainment of our students,
- [00:01:54.770]increasing and improving their readiness
- [00:01:57.290]for college and careers, and then contributing
- [00:01:59.760]to workforce development in Nebraska.
- [00:02:01.870]And this is very important in Nebraska
- [00:02:04.550]where one in four jobs is tied to Ag and natural resources.
- [00:02:07.770]And so this program will help to ensure
- [00:02:10.070]that we have a talented workforce
- [00:02:12.300]for the future of our state.
- [00:02:14.160]So what comes next for the program
- [00:02:15.810]as it continues to grow?
- [00:02:18.240]Yeah so we're excited to begin working
- [00:02:20.230]with Lincoln public schools.
- [00:02:21.560]And the first thing that we're doing,
- [00:02:22.950]is integrating these food, energy, water
- [00:02:25.520]and societal systems, which we refer to as FEWS,
- [00:02:28.370]in a summer enrichment program for middle school students,
- [00:02:31.490]to help them get excited about these areas,
- [00:02:34.760]let them know about the career opportunities
- [00:02:36.860]and the pathway program that will be available
- [00:02:39.180]through the Lincoln public schools.
- [00:02:40.720]And then those FEWS concepts will be integrated
- [00:02:43.650]in the math and science curriculum
- [00:02:45.460]for ninth and 10th graders at Lincoln public schools
- [00:02:48.920]starting fall of 2021.
- [00:02:50.970]And then at the university will have those education
- [00:02:54.250]and career pathways available
- [00:02:56.340]for 11th and 12th graders starting fall 2022.
- [00:02:59.920]So again we're excited about this new opportunity
- [00:03:02.960]to partner with Lincoln public schools,
- [00:03:06.172]and we look forward to leveraging the foundation
- [00:03:07.490]of our state to prepare the next
- [00:03:08.800]generation of change makers.
- [00:03:10.640]Well thank you very much for bringing the story to us.
- [00:03:12.600]We appreciate it.
- [00:03:13.433]Dean of UNLs college of Agricultural sciences
- [00:03:15.800]and natural resources Tiffany Heng-Moss
- [00:03:17.780]joining us course there from Lincoln.
