- [00:00:00.480]While rural communities are vital
- [00:00:02.300]to ag production,
- [00:00:03.360]they often have less access to resources
- [00:00:05.880]than Metropolitan areas.
- [00:00:07.700]To help ensure rural prosperity,
- [00:00:09.520]the University of Nebraska is launched a new program
- [00:00:12.360]to help these communities thrive.
- [00:00:14.790]President of the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:16.670]Ted Carter joins us now for a further look
- [00:00:19.230]and thanks for taking the time to chat with us this morning,
- [00:00:21.740]we appreciate it.
- [00:00:22.850]So if you would bring us up to speed on this program
- [00:00:25.370]and of course the overall main objective.
- [00:00:28.870]Good morning, Janet
- [00:00:29.703]and greetings to all of your listeners
- [00:00:31.780]and happy first day of fall.
- [00:00:34.200]You may know that just a few weeks ago
- [00:00:36.510]we launched a five year strategy
- [00:00:38.610]for the university of Nebraska,
- [00:00:39.840]and one of those initiatives
- [00:00:41.490]is Rural Prosperity Nebraska.
- [00:00:43.870]And this is a really simple concept
- [00:00:46.090]that acknowledges and recognizes that our rural communities
- [00:00:49.500]are some of our most important
- [00:00:50.970]as you look across 93 counties
- [00:00:53.480]in the State of Nebraska.
- [00:00:54.640]We take existing programs like extension,
- [00:00:58.080]understanding that the polls that we've been taking
- [00:01:01.650]for 25 years for rural Nebraskans
- [00:01:04.030]tell us a little bit about some of those challenges
- [00:01:06.740]and then even looking at some of the students,
- [00:01:09.170]that we have called rural fellows
- [00:01:11.000]that we send throughout the state
- [00:01:12.720]to help best understand these challenges.
- [00:01:15.330]So this stitches add altogether,
- [00:01:17.570]and not only understands the problems,
- [00:01:19.170]but helps give us a new way for solutions.
- [00:01:22.070]You're calling Rural Prosperity,
- [00:01:23.300]of course a priority area,
- [00:01:25.050]what is it about Rural Prosperity
- [00:01:27.300]and part of the university assisting
- [00:01:28.690]that makes it such a priority?
- [00:01:31.990]Well, first of all you have to go back 151 years
- [00:01:34.520]and understand we are a land grant university,
- [00:01:36.720]we were founded under that concept
- [00:01:38.600]and we also acknowledge here at the university
- [00:01:41.250]that agriculture and ranching, all which happened primarily
- [00:01:45.610]in the most rural parts of our State
- [00:01:47.950]are really the leading economic driver
- [00:01:50.800]and it's what feeds the State
- [00:01:52.190]and feeds our nation and the world.
- [00:01:54.080]So making this a priority is just exactly who we are,
- [00:01:58.170]it's the center of our personality.
- [00:01:59.850]So we wanna make sure that we had a path forward
- [00:02:02.580]to make rural Nebraska successful.
- [00:02:05.550]Now you have officially launched
- [00:02:06.830]the Rural Prosperity Nebraska effort,
- [00:02:09.970]exactly what is this effort gonna be
- [00:02:12.450]and what are the next steps of course moving forward?
- [00:02:16.420]Well, as we're expanding what's been built
- [00:02:18.720]on a number of previous programs,
- [00:02:20.890]the first thing we need to do is go out and find
- [00:02:23.130]a new director,
- [00:02:24.850]and in doing that we're gonna find some
- [00:02:26.670]of the best talent across the country.
- [00:02:29.180]I mentioned the rural fellows are students
- [00:02:32.140]that have been throughout the state,
- [00:02:33.660]very excited to say we're gonna expand that
- [00:02:35.960]from 20 to a well over 200 by the year 2021,
- [00:02:40.570]and then of course we're looking to,
- [00:02:42.360]better connect our Nebraska extension educators,
- [00:02:46.820]throughout the entire State
- [00:02:48.490]and I'm just very excited that we're gonna
- [00:02:50.450]take other existing programs that we have
- [00:02:52.370]at the university Nebraska Medical Center,
- [00:02:54.460]helping bringing doctors and nurses throughout
- [00:02:56.650]the state a critical need,
- [00:02:58.310]as well as paying attention to the initiatives
- [00:03:01.730]that we're bringing at the university of Nebraska Kearney,
- [00:03:03.760]where they're about to open up a new STEM center,
- [00:03:05.630]making them really the doorway from the West
- [00:03:08.440]for our entire university of Nebraska.
- [00:03:10.130]So I'm excited about this entire initiative.
- [00:03:13.090]President Carter, the details that you're laying out,
- [00:03:15.440]it sounds like a pretty big bike to chew,
- [00:03:17.944]what is the first step and of course how can communities
- [00:03:21.530]maybe help in this matter of getting this
- [00:03:23.683]kind of up and going?
- [00:03:26.440]Well, I'd say just pay attention at what we're doing
- [00:03:28.260]again, we'll be having these polls to let us know
- [00:03:32.310]what the real challenges are,
- [00:03:34.140]but also take a look at our programs they're available
- [00:03:37.379]through our education whether they be online
- [00:03:40.330]or the opportunity to come attend university of Nebraska
- [00:03:43.610]and that's really where we're opening doors
- [00:03:45.260]for affordability and accessibility.
- [00:03:47.480]And where can folks follow along through the process
- [00:03:49.540]and maybe learn some more information as well too?
- [00:03:52.840]So of course we have a website,
- [00:03:55.020]through the university of Nebraska
- [00:03:56.720]and it's ruralprosperitynebraska.unl.edu
- [00:04:01.259]so please check us out on the web.
- [00:04:03.360]All right well president Carter,
- [00:04:04.470]thank you very much for taking the time to chat with us.
- [00:04:06.170]We certainly appreciate your time today.
- [00:04:07.970]President of the university of Nebraska Ted Carter,
- [00:04:10.670]joining us of course from Lincoln, Nebraska this morning.
