- [00:00:00.589](upbeat gentle music)
- [00:00:04.600]Hi, College of Business.
- [00:00:06.570]I am Dr. Marco Barker,
- [00:00:08.240]Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion.
- [00:00:11.420]Our university is on an amazing journey
- [00:00:14.490]where we have an opportunity,
- [00:00:16.550]one in where we make excellence inclusive of all.
- [00:00:20.470]This will entail recognizing differences,
- [00:00:23.150]practicing inclusion and upholding equity,
- [00:00:26.720]especially in these times where racial equity is calling
- [00:00:29.760]for greater accountability.
- [00:00:31.940]This Business Week is your opportunity to reflect
- [00:00:35.250]on the type of Husker, leader, instructor or professional
- [00:00:39.710]you want to be
- [00:00:41.370]and how you maximize your experiences
- [00:00:43.370]to ensure your fellow Huskers feel a sense of belonging
- [00:00:47.040]in the college and the university.
- [00:00:50.040]As a member of our university community,
- [00:00:52.670]you are part of our institutional commitment
- [00:00:55.120]to inclusive excellence, where our actions are inclusive.
- [00:00:59.560]This means we value diversity.
- [00:01:01.850]We seek to have and recognize different life experiences
- [00:01:05.530]and perspectives around the table.
- [00:01:08.490]Visibility matters. People's stories matter.
- [00:01:12.800]We value inclusion.
- [00:01:14.630]We intently and actively engage with diversity
- [00:01:17.500]on a continuous basis.
- [00:01:19.450]We never stop trying to do better and be better.
- [00:01:23.630]This means that we wrestle with and apply inclusion
- [00:01:26.360]in all that we do.
- [00:01:28.490]Our practices, application of business principles
- [00:01:31.920]and decision-making reflects an understanding
- [00:01:35.270]of the complexity and inequity found within systems
- [00:01:38.890]and that notions of differences, power and privilege
- [00:01:42.980]are sometimes difficult to address
- [00:01:45.270]but critical to making our environment better.
- [00:01:48.360]Lastly, but most importantly, we value equity.
- [00:01:52.740]As a college of business, I know it is important
- [00:01:55.370]to examine when things just don't add up.
- [00:01:59.030]We must become better at recognizing
- [00:02:01.320]that while equal opportunity and access
- [00:02:04.360]should be a reality for all, it is not,
- [00:02:07.690]as a result of systems and historical practices
- [00:02:10.360]that produce unequal and inequitable outcomes today.
- [00:02:15.150]This is especially felt among our most vulnerable
- [00:02:18.480]or minoritized populations.
- [00:02:21.200]These concepts of diversity, inclusion and equity
- [00:02:24.500]coming together and applied in our practices
- [00:02:27.590]allow us to create an environment
- [00:02:29.460]where people feel like they belong and they matter.
- [00:02:33.740]At Nebraska, all are welcome.
- [00:02:37.260]Here's your opportunity.
- [00:02:39.380]Seek to learn more,
- [00:02:41.220]increase your awareness,
- [00:02:43.330]stretch your thinking and find new ways
- [00:02:45.710]to think about the world and the people in it.
- [00:02:49.210]Take action,
- [00:02:50.600]even if it's one thing you do differently.
- [00:02:53.780]Join our NCLUDE learning community.
- [00:02:56.630]Read a suggested book on racial equity.
- [00:02:59.670]Attend diversity events.

- [00:03:13.020]I know you can play a role
- [00:03:14.350]in making places of business more inclusive.
- [00:03:17.930]The future of the college, our university
- [00:03:21.020]and the business profession relies on us,
- [00:03:23.670]relies on you to make excellence in business inclusive.
