- [00:00:04.950]My name is Hayden Delay and I'm a proud University
- [00:00:07.852]of Nebraska graduate and a licensed professional engineer
- [00:00:11.480]working in the Water Wastewater Field.
- [00:00:14.323]When I was a student I often felt unsure or had questions
- [00:00:18.100]about what it was like to work in the water industry
- [00:00:20.590]after college.
- [00:00:21.900]I had questions such as what is day to day life like
- [00:00:25.290]as a water professional? What options do I have
- [00:00:28.270]for a career path? And how do I land an internship?
- [00:00:32.170]To help students answer these questions
- [00:00:34.150]and provide career advice, we started a mentoring program
- [00:00:37.290]in 2018 through the young professional groups
- [00:00:39.948]of the Nebraska Water Environment Association
- [00:00:42.849]and the Nebraska Section AWWA.
- [00:00:46.300]This mentoring program helps soon to be water professionals
- [00:00:49.379]feel more comfortable about their career path
- [00:00:51.649]and their future.
- [00:00:53.005]The program has been successful and continues to grow
- [00:00:56.100]as we enter our third year.
- [00:00:58.172]Here are some of our student experience
- [00:01:00.680]from past program participants.
- [00:01:02.530]Hi, my name is Purity Maurya, I'm a graduate student
- [00:01:05.270]in UNL in civil engineering,.
- [00:01:07.980]I joined AWWA a last year when I started my graduate school.
- [00:01:13.870]And I was put together with Scott, he advised me
- [00:01:18.560]on classes to take and how to approach graduate school
- [00:01:22.967]which was really helpful to me.
- [00:01:25.330]He also invited me to AWWA conference which I went to
- [00:01:31.460]in the fall last year.
- [00:01:32.675]And there I was able to meet a lot of people who work
- [00:01:36.970]in the industry and I got to exchanging contacts information
- [00:01:40.695]with them.
- [00:01:41.860]I also reached out to some of them to shadow them
- [00:01:44.600]at their jobs which was really nice to see the type of work
- [00:01:48.560]that they do day to day.
- [00:01:50.150]Hi, my name is Andrew Fan, I joined the NWEA/AWWA
- [00:01:54.340]mentorship program in 2018 when I was an undergraduate
- [00:01:57.280]in civil engineering.
- [00:01:58.586]The reason I joined was because I wanted to see
- [00:02:00.640]a broader picture of what it means to be
- [00:02:02.210]a Water Wastewater professional beyond the technical aspects
- [00:02:04.788]that I was learning in my classes.
- [00:02:06.726]My mentor was Scott Harter from ACR
- [00:02:09.070]and for our first meeting I job shadowed him for a day.
- [00:02:11.820]I sat in on discussions about budgeting for a large project,
- [00:02:15.280]risk management plans and new technologies.
- [00:02:18.174]Throughout the semester I met with my mentor once a month
- [00:02:20.960]to discuss academic and professional goals,
- [00:02:23.250]going to graduate school and improving my resume.
- [00:02:26.388]At the end of the academic year I was able
- [00:02:28.380]to land a summer internship at the firm, largely because of
- [00:02:31.079]my connections with my mentor through this program.
- [00:02:34.260]So to any student with interest
- [00:02:36.140]in the Water/Wastewater Field, I highly recommend
- [00:02:38.541]being a part of this program to confirm your interest,
- [00:02:42.040]learn more about the field and to start
- [00:02:44.020]your professional networking.
- [00:02:45.414]The water industry is constantly growing
- [00:02:48.410]and innovating to meet the needs of tomorrow.
- [00:02:50.610]And with a large projected job growth outlook,
- [00:02:53.240]it's a great time to get involved in the industry.
- [00:02:56.150]We hope you're interested in joining the program
- [00:02:57.970]and if you wanna learn a little bit more or sign up to join,
- [00:03:01.200]you can go to http://www.nebwea.org/mentoring-program.
- [00:03:06.150]On that page you'll find a link to a survey
