- [00:00:10.630]Hello,
- [00:00:11.463]my name is Daran Rudnick
- [00:00:12.497]and I'm an Irrigation Management Specialist
- [00:00:14.700]here at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:17.270]Today, I wanna share with you a project that we have
- [00:00:20.610]that is at the International Wheat Stump Center
- [00:00:22.970]in Grant, Nebraska,
- [00:00:24.530]and also we have a matching study
- [00:00:26.640]at the West Central Research Extension and Education Center
- [00:00:29.870]in North Platte.
- [00:00:31.460]The project that I'm sharing with you
- [00:00:33.400]is in collaboration with Bayer Crop Science,
- [00:00:35.940]and what we're interested in looking at is
- [00:00:38.370]the impact of water stress on Semi-dwarf hybrids
- [00:00:42.130]as compared to a conventional hybrid.
- [00:00:44.670]The study is set up where we are interested in looking at
- [00:00:48.670]four different hybrids,
- [00:00:49.910]three of which are semi-dwarf and one conventional.
- [00:00:53.650]And these hybrids are being imposed
- [00:00:55.630]under three different levels of irrigation,
- [00:00:58.330]one being fully irrigated,
- [00:01:00.270]the second being 50% irrigated,
- [00:01:03.150]and then the third one is rain fed.
- [00:01:06.370]Each of the irrigation by
- [00:01:09.070]hybrid combinations
- [00:01:11.040]we have under four different seeding rates as well.
- [00:01:14.240]And those are 26, 32, 38, and 42,000 seeds per acre.
- [00:01:21.490]One of the things that we're interested in is
- [00:01:23.670]how are these semi-dwarf compared
- [00:01:26.800]going to perform and compare
- [00:01:28.590]against some of our conventional hybrids?
- [00:01:31.360]And so some of the data that we're looking at is
- [00:01:33.660]simply, what is the difference in plant height
- [00:01:36.850]across some of these hybrids?
- [00:01:39.130]What's the difference
- [00:01:40.080]in the placement of the ear on the stock,
- [00:01:42.930]and how does that compare to our harvest equipment?
- [00:01:46.520]So our combines and our ability to,
- [00:01:49.090]to mechanically remove that grain.
- [00:01:52.250]And we're also looking at lodging and green snap and
- [00:01:56.500]some of the other pressures that might take place
- [00:01:59.390]between our semi-dwarf and our conventional hybrids.
- [00:02:03.660]This project here,
- [00:02:05.120]which is shown in the video
- [00:02:06.570]was planted on May 19th of this year.
- [00:02:10.230]And at this point in time,
- [00:02:12.140]we've applied nearly nine inches of water.
- [00:02:14.820]Therefore, the deficit irrigated treatment
- [00:02:16.990]has received about 4.5 inches.
- [00:02:20.890]I wanna jump in this video to show
- [00:02:24.710]just a side view of the plots,
- [00:02:27.220]and you can clearly see that the visual height difference
- [00:02:30.340]between the conventional and the semi-dwarf,
- [00:02:33.170]and now the height as well as the leaf area index
- [00:02:36.290]for the density of those leaves
- [00:02:38.350]are very different between the semi-dwarf
- [00:02:41.690]and the conventional hybrid.
- [00:02:43.870]And so we're trying to obtain some of this information
- [00:02:46.630]and draw some conclusions on how
- [00:02:50.120]those semi-dwarfs are really performing in our climate
- [00:02:54.100]in Grant as well as in North Platte.
- [00:02:57.230]Unfortunately, I do not have any results yet
- [00:02:59.860]to share with you as this is the first year of the project
- [00:03:03.430]at the Grant location.
- [00:03:07.760]And so please,
- [00:03:09.400]if interested in the results,
- [00:03:11.430]please reach out to your local Bayer representative
- [00:03:14.720]or even feel free to reach out to me
- [00:03:16.960]and we'll be happy to share with you
- [00:03:18.730]some of the findings and conclusions of this year's study.
- [00:03:22.850]Thank you, and look forward to visiting with you soon.
