- [00:00:02.740]Getting this degree isn't what people think it is.
- [00:00:04.610]It's not, you're going out there with a hammer.
- [00:00:06.788]I like problem solving.
- [00:00:08.480]I like working with people.
- [00:00:09.882]I chose a career in construction engineering
- [00:00:11.770]because I wanted the versatility
- [00:00:12.980]to be able to do both design work and be in the field.
- [00:00:16.001](mellow music)
- [00:00:18.450]Construction engineering to me
- [00:00:20.140]is a civil discipline specialty.
- [00:00:23.190]It focuses on design, planning, management,
- [00:00:26.620]and construction of heavy civil projects and infrastructure.
- [00:00:30.190]It also includes process design and simulations,
- [00:00:33.250]as well as life cycle cost analysis.
- [00:00:35.930]There is a difference between construction engineering
- [00:00:37.970]and construction management.
- [00:00:40.410]Think of construction management as a business degree
- [00:00:43.970]that focuses specifically on the construction industry.
- [00:00:48.880]The construction engineering is an engineering degree
- [00:00:52.870]with a focus on the construction industry.
- [00:00:56.170]It combines both engineering courses
- [00:00:59.060]and construction management courses together
- [00:01:01.400]to accommodate for students who wanna take
- [00:01:04.120]more of a management and technical route at the same time.
- [00:01:07.330]It allows you to maybe emphasize
- [00:01:08.641]in either the management side
- [00:01:10.620]or maybe like a structural engineering side of things,
- [00:01:13.350]and that's kind of what really draw me to it.
- [00:01:15.230]From my perspective and my experience
- [00:01:16.980]in different fields now,
- [00:01:19.840]this is really one of the more versatile industries.
- [00:01:22.600]With the shortage of labor,
- [00:01:23.790]things are leaning more towards prefabrication offsite.
- [00:01:27.490]When you have that need,
- [00:01:29.370]you really start pushing yourself
- [00:01:31.020]towards needing to explore options such as BIM
- [00:01:34.940]and do some three-dimensional collaboration
- [00:01:38.530]outside of the field so that when things are built offsite,
- [00:01:42.070]they're built correctly and they fit when you bring them
- [00:01:44.240]to the construction site.
- [00:01:46.300]Our industry is heavily depending
- [00:01:49.170]on how we work well with other disciplines,
- [00:01:51.940]whether it's construction, architecture,
- [00:01:54.210]engineering, customers, contractors.
- [00:01:57.270]It's really a collaborative field,
- [00:01:58.910]and I think that in the future
- [00:02:00.580]will continue to be collaborative
- [00:02:02.060]and more virtually collaborative
- [00:02:03.960]as opposed to in-person collaborative.
- [00:02:06.510]The soft skills that I think
- [00:02:08.370]are probably most important in the construction industry
- [00:02:11.640]is to be honest, first of all,
- [00:02:15.130]and then to be prompt, but to just be a people person,
- [00:02:20.160]be able to get along with people.
- [00:02:22.030]It's basically the heart of where our economy is going,
- [00:02:24.480]and as of right now, I see that it's up and coming.
- [00:02:26.820]We have a lot of work to do
- [00:02:28.780]with not only buildings being built,
- [00:02:30.740]roads being repaired, power plants being built
- [00:02:33.750]to support our infrastructure.
- [00:02:35.900]It's a great career to get into.
- [00:02:38.200]There's a wide range of different projects going on,
- [00:02:41.410]from working on mega dams and tunnel projects
- [00:02:44.780]to working on small, local residential.
- [00:02:47.290]So I think there's a lot of opportunity
- [00:02:48.813]to really find your niche
- [00:02:50.410]and do what you're passionate about.
- [00:02:52.690]Being a woman in it is interesting.
- [00:02:55.820]You'd think it'd be a lot harder than it is,
- [00:02:57.410]and there are some people that still have
- [00:02:59.120]that outdated kind of view,
- [00:03:00.890]but I feel like I actually have a lot of advantages
- [00:03:03.350]coming in with a different perspective.
- [00:03:05.650]I've had the opportunity to work on different projects,
- [00:03:07.760]through internships at the career fairs
- [00:03:09.630]and different things have helped me attain.
- [00:03:11.910]So overall super bright future,
- [00:03:14.740]great major to be a part of.
- [00:03:16.280]Came to college, hadn't even heard of it.
- [00:03:18.340]So I decided to give construction management a try,
- [00:03:20.850]and I just went in thinking one semester,
- [00:03:23.970]I'll see what this is about.
- [00:03:25.800]It's been a lot of semesters since then,
- [00:03:27.050]and I haven't wanted to leave.
