- [00:00:13.872]My name is Kennedy Nguyen.
- [00:00:15.100]My pronouns are he, him, his.
- [00:00:17.980]I'm a senior in marketing at the College of Business.
- [00:00:20.800]I'm also an international student from Vietnam.
- [00:00:24.740]Three years ago, me and many of my friends
- [00:00:27.500]were in the same spot as you.
- [00:00:30.140]Some of us knew what we want to do after college
- [00:00:32.930]and had a perfect plans in mind.
- [00:00:35.660]Some of us had no clue about college,
- [00:00:37.800]so undeclared major as a freshman is totally normal.
- [00:00:42.630]I chose to pursue my career in marketing
- [00:00:45.010]as it is the creative side of the business world.
- [00:00:48.732]It is also a massive field with endless choices of career.
- [00:00:53.460]However, during my freshman year,
- [00:00:55.860]I told myself that the last thing I want to do is sales,
- [00:01:00.060]and I was dead wrong.
- [00:01:01.770]My perspective changed after having a sales class
- [00:01:05.350]as a requirement.
- [00:01:07.200]Before that class, my typical stereotype on salespeople
- [00:01:11.540]was that they are extrovert,
- [00:01:14.060]talking a lot
- [00:01:15.080]and trying to sell you something.
- [00:01:16.930]Like an annoying insurance agent bombarding your phone,
- [00:01:20.930]or when you went to McDonald's
- [00:01:22.810]and they ask if you want to upsize your meal.
- [00:01:25.620]So as an introvert transgender,
- [00:01:28.120]I thought I wouldn't fit the field.
- [00:01:30.900]However, after that entry-level class
- [00:01:34.450]actually gave me a better appreciation for sales.
- [00:01:38.730]We don't realize that we sell almost every time and moment.
- [00:01:43.160]If you have a job,
- [00:01:44.700]you already practice selling yourself
- [00:01:47.350]for the position or a promotion.
- [00:01:50.410]If you're dating,
- [00:01:51.610]either you or your significant other
- [00:01:54.370]were already selling yourself
- [00:01:56.440]to your special one on your first date.
- [00:01:59.520]Even this little speech I'm giving to you
- [00:02:01.840]is an example of sales.
- [00:02:04.270]You see, when we don't fully understand something,
- [00:02:07.760]we tend to be afraid
- [00:02:09.270]and to keep our distance from it.
- [00:02:11.970]In worst cases,
- [00:02:13.380]we even believe in rumors and stereotype that are not true.
- [00:02:18.720]Though the sale class was a requirement,
- [00:02:21.990]if I wasn't open up myself to learn new things,
- [00:02:25.800]I would never know what is truly behind a label.
- [00:02:29.400]My point is,
- [00:02:30.570]your college years will be full of chances
- [00:02:33.140]and surprise.
- [00:02:34.620]So please,
- [00:02:36.030]always keep an open mind to learn
- [00:02:38.530]and challenge yourself.
- [00:02:40.400]Remember those friends of mine I mentioned with the
- [00:02:42.680]perfect plans?
- [00:02:44.410]They reached their goal as they wanted,
- [00:02:47.470]but also gained other unexpected skill sets
- [00:02:50.550]and experience along the way.
- [00:02:53.060]Performing on stage has never been my thing
- [00:02:56.130]for the majority of my life.
- [00:02:58.220]But then I asked myself, why not?
- [00:03:01.350]And took a step out of my comfort zone.
- [00:03:04.140]And guess what?
- [00:03:05.410]I was rocking it last year with "We Are Nebraska."
- [00:03:08.280]In simple words,
- [00:03:09.910]sexual orientation is who you want to go to bed with,
- [00:03:13.540]while gender identity is who you want to go to bed as.
- [00:03:16.984](crowd applauds)
- [00:03:20.940]Spoiler alert,
- [00:03:21.890]I shared my story of being kicked out of prom
- [00:03:24.060]during my senior year of high school.
- [00:03:26.430]And in case you might wonder, I wasn't a troublemaker,
- [00:03:30.110]but it was due to my identity as a transgender.
- [00:03:33.570]Let's save that story for another time.
- [00:03:36.380]Some of you might share the same feelings with my story
- [00:03:39.760]or other people's here.
- [00:03:41.770]If you don't, that's totally fine.
- [00:03:44.610]This is a wonderful opportunity to learn
- [00:03:47.950]and be part of a diverse and inclusive community.
- [00:03:51.990]I'm so glad to have you here with us all
- [00:03:54.730]and welcome to our Husker family.
- [00:03:57.560]After this,
- [00:03:58.393]please feel free to reach out to any of us for a quick chat
- [00:04:01.590]or anything.
- [00:04:03.040]Thank you
- [00:04:03.873]and welcome.
- [00:04:05.150]And remember,
- [00:04:06.410]challenge yourself
- [00:04:07.950]and have an open mind,
- [00:04:09.650]always.
- [00:04:10.750](upbeat happy music)
