- [00:00:03.180]Hello,
- [00:00:03.680]I'm Sherri Jones,
- [00:00:04.940]Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of
- [00:00:08.840]Nebraska-Lincoln. I am pleased to welcome you to the fall 2020 semester.
- [00:00:15.020]Although we are still in the midst of a time of uncertainty due to the
- [00:00:18.590]coronavirus pandemic. Today,
- [00:00:21.230]I am filled with optimism and hope about the opportunity that this semester
- [00:00:25.790]provides.
- [00:00:27.020]And that's because of you - our passionate community who are filled with
- [00:00:31.610]creativity, innovation, and curiosity.
- [00:00:35.420]It's these qualities that will help us achieve our mission to enhance the lives
- [00:00:39.950]of individuals, families, schools,
- [00:00:42.050]and communities. Fulfilling our mission also means protecting ourselves and
- [00:00:47.030]others within our Husker community.
- [00:00:49.340]We've joined our campus partners in developing a number of steps to ensure the
- [00:00:54.710]health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
- [00:00:58.940]This includes implementing physical distancing measures and a facial covering
- [00:01:04.070]policy.
- [00:01:05.480]I urge you to become familiar with these policies if you have not already done
- [00:01:09.920]so, and to do your part, to protect yourself and others.
- [00:01:14.240]Things on campus may look a bit different.
- [00:01:16.700]The way you interact with people may feel a bit different.
- [00:01:19.880]What remains is the fact that those within this college truly care about one
- [00:01:25.250]another as the "people's college", you are our top priority.
- [00:01:29.330]Please remember to take care of yourself. Don't hesitate to seek assistance,
- [00:01:34.310]whether it be with your academics, your physical health, or your wellbeing.
- [00:01:39.320]There are resources available,
- [00:01:41.210]both in the college and on campus. Heading into this semester,
- [00:01:45.890]safety is at the forefront of our minds,
- [00:01:48.260]but it will not diminish our passion to help society find solutions to
- [00:01:52.640]challenges. From studying levels of the Coronavirus in wastewater samples,
- [00:01:58.400]to supporting families who are faced with at homeschooling.
- [00:02:02.090]We're coming up with new ways to help people get through these uncertain times.
- [00:02:06.920]Faculty, staff, and students in this college are making a difference.
- [00:02:11.240]And I look forward to carrying our momentum into the fall.
- [00:02:15.290]Another area of focus for the college this fall will be our ongoing journey
- [00:02:19.760]toward inclusive excellence. Over the summer.
- [00:02:22.400]I committed this college to moving forward with intentionality,
- [00:02:26.360]informing our strategies and actions related to diversity equity and social
- [00:02:32.090]justice sharing resources on racial justice,
- [00:02:36.410]aligning with campus-wide efforts on antiracism and racial equity and naming a
- [00:02:42.200]college Associate Dean for Diversity Equity and Inclusion are just a few of the
- [00:02:47.780]examples we're actively pursuing.
- [00:02:50.630]And you will hear more about these as the fall moves forward.
- [00:02:54.500]Diversity and inclusion are central to our mission of enhancing lives and
- [00:02:58.900]strengthening relationships.
- [00:03:00.910]It's critically important that this college foster a positive environment in
- [00:03:05.680]which every member of our community has something to gain from and something to
- [00:03:10.120]offer our community. We may find this semester to be challenging at times,
- [00:03:14.740]but I'm certain that this college can face any challenge.
- [00:03:18.100]If we work together and stay focused on our mission,
- [00:03:21.820]it's more important than ever before. So here's to a strong,
- [00:03:26.230]healthy and productive semester. Go Big Red!
