- [00:00:03.207]Good afternoon. I'm Dr. Shani Carter, and I'm a professor of business at
- [00:00:06.665]Wagner College in New York City. I teach undergraduate and MBA courses in
- [00:00:11.128]human resources, organizational behavior, leadership, entrepreneurship,
- [00:00:15.446]international business, and I also teach the thesis and the internship course.
- [00:00:19.738]I became acquainted with Tests in Print and the Mental Measurements Yearbook in
- [00:00:25.224]the early 1990s when I needed to choose cognitive ability test to use for my
- [00:00:29.369]doctoral dissertation at Cornell University. I choose to use Tests in
- [00:00:34.267]Print and the Mental Measurements Yearbook my graduate courses to
- [00:00:38.118]familiarize my students with the rich resources that are available to them when
- [00:00:42.134]they are designing procedures for hiring and promoting employees. Most managers
- [00:00:46.790]lack training in psychometrics, but if they're relying on the test reviews and
- [00:00:50.939]Mental Measurements Yearbook, they are more likely to hire appropriately qualified
- [00:00:55.079]employees and to avoid discrimination lawsuits that result from improper hiring.
- [00:00:59.648]The project requires students to use the test reviews and Mental Measurements
- [00:01:05.011]Yearbook to choose a test that will be effective to use to screen job applicants.
- [00:01:09.244]The students will learn that they do not need to create tests from scratch,
- [00:01:13.156]but that instead, it is relatively easy for them to locate a reliable and valid
- [00:01:17.423]tool to measure nearly any knowledge, skill, or ability. Students will also learn
- [00:01:23.194]the importance of validity and reliability of measures for adherent
- [00:01:26.310]to discrimination laws. Students usually respond with trepidation upon initially
- [00:01:32.934]receiving the assignment because they are unaware of the content of the Mental
- [00:01:36.701]Measurements Yearbook and its ease of use. But after completing the assignment, they
- [00:01:41.260]feel empowered to manage employee selection procedures. The assignments
- [00:01:46.192]should be given only after students receive a grounding in cognitive ability,
- [00:01:49.818]employment laws, validity, reliability and selection methods, but the assignment
- [00:01:54.742]could be modified to focus only on comparing and contrasting test reviews.
- [00:01:58.749]There is the additional step of creating a selection procedure. The student's
- [00:02:03.757]workload is relatively light, and they should be able to complete the assignment
- [00:02:07.436]in a few hours. Faculty grading of the assignment is relatively simple if students
- [00:02:12.015]are required to use the assigned template to submit their work. If the students are
- [00:02:15.857]particularly apprehensive about the assignment, then the faculty member
- [00:02:20.893]could show a copy of one Mental Measurement Yearbook test reviews to
- [00:02:24.986]students when distributing the assignment, but bear in mind that doing so will
- [00:02:29.495]eliminate the students' joy of discovery if they first access Mental Measurements
- [00:02:33.485]Yearbook without knowing its context. I wish you all the best with your students.
