- [00:00:18.634]assistant for the Buros Center for
- [00:00:20.614]Testing during my doctoral
- [00:00:22.604]studies at the University of
- [00:00:24.154]Nebraska-Lincoln. Since 2018, I've
- [00:00:26.154]I've been teaching the “Measurement and
- [00:00:28.534]Testing of Groups and Individuals” course
- [00:00:30.754]which is an undergrad level upper
- [00:00:32.794]division elective. Today, I'm pleased to
- [00:00:35.144]introduce a learning module using the
- [00:00:37.334]MMY as a go to resource to find
- [00:00:39.644]to find information about commercially
- [00:00:42.214]available tests published in English.
- [00:00:45.704]As you see in the PowerPoint slide, the
- [00:00:48.204]focus of this module is to provide
- [00:00:51.594]psychology majors with a learning
- [00:00:54.014]opportunity to explore educational and
- [00:00:56.484]psychological tests that they are
- [00:00:58.714]interested in and select the most
- [00:01:00.904]appropriate test for their intended
- [00:01:03.134]purpose based on the evaluation
- [00:01:05.664]of sources of evidence related
- [00:01:08.064]to reliability, validity, and fairness
- [00:01:11.554]provided in MMY test reviews.
- [00:01:14.264]This assignment emulates the
- [00:01:17.336]actual process that practitioners
- [00:01:19.296]and researchers in psychology follow in
- [00:01:21.635]selecting a test, and my students
- [00:01:23.824]appreciated the practical aspects of the
- [00:01:27.285]assignments the most, as I indicated
- [00:01:29.772]in students' comments. Also, a
- [00:01:32.495]majority of the students responded that
- [00:01:35.289]this assignment aided their learning.
- [00:01:40.720]I recommend providing this assignment
- [00:01:43.210]after teaching the fundamental concepts
- [00:01:46.070]in measurement, including reliability,
- [00:01:48.610]validity, and fairness so that students
- [00:01:51.188]can apply the principles in measurement
- [00:01:54.148]to evaluate tests. I have implemented
- [00:01:57.401]this assignment in both in-person and
- [00:01:59.667]for online settings and the assignment
- [00:02:02.424]worked well in both environments.
- [00:02:05.353]Grading time depends on the
- [00:02:07.363]number of students. Using the rubric
- [00:02:09.753]as you see on the website helps
- [00:02:11.913]instructors to systematically grade the
- [00:02:14.400]assignment, which also saves time.
- [00:02:16.730]This assignment can be modified for
- [00:02:20.475]graduate level courses in various
- [00:02:23.102]substantive fields of psychology by
- [00:02:25.782]focusing on specific tests. For example,
- [00:02:28.240]selecting the most appropriate test
- [00:02:31.840]to screen mood disorder or selecting
- [00:02:34.190]the most appropriate test to measure 15
- [00:02:36.690]year old students' cooking skills
- [00:02:39.150]for grant proposals.
- [00:02:40.750]Considering that over 50% of the students
- [00:02:44.750]at California State University Channel
- [00:02:46.880]Islands are from historically
- [00:02:49.315]underrepresented groups or first
- [00:02:51.489]generation students, this is a
- [00:02:53.349]self-directed learning opportunity. Using
- [00:02:55.852]the MMY can also motivate students from
- [00:02:59.310]diverse backgrounds to pursue a
- [00:03:01.440]professional career in psychology as
- [00:03:05.234]indicated from the following remarks from
- [00:03:07.681]students. I hope this module can help you
- [00:03:11.681]implement a new component in your class
- [00:03:14.299]using the MMY. Thank you.
