- [00:00:00.000]Hi, my name is Ryan McGill. I am Associate Professor of School Psychology
- [00:00:04.047]at the William and Mary School of Education Virginia, where I teach
- [00:00:07.832]predominantly in the graduate school psychology program in particular, a year
- [00:00:12.037]long, two course sequence in clinical assessment that is taken by first year
- [00:00:15.452]master's level students where this course module and assignment are embedded
- [00:00:20.344]in the second semester. So, I first became aware of the Buros Center for
- [00:00:23.425]Testing’s Mental Measurements Yearbook reviews when I was a doctoral student and
- [00:00:28.873]was also practicing simultaneously full time as a school psychologist at a local
- [00:00:31.065]school system. And I, once I had access for the first time through my
- [00:00:34.082]university's EBSCO database, I started to use the reviews to help aid my
- [00:00:38.354]decision making in terms of whether to adopt a test or whether to uh utilize
- [00:00:44.099]a newly revised test. It really was beneficial to see kind of an independent
- [00:00:50.569]source to go to and know that the quality of the reviews and the comprehensiveness
- [00:00:56.947]of reviews was not going to be in question.
- [00:00:59.564]And that's really what I find to be the primary benefit of using those resources
- [00:01:02.714]in my classes. Because that way students are exposed to sort of an independent
- [00:01:08.912]voice that's regarded within the assessment community as really a
- [00:01:14.769]gold standard. And so they know the information they're getting is of high
- [00:01:18.583]quality and, and the comprehensiveness of the reviews is never in question. So in
- [00:01:23.080]terms of the assignment it is a group test review, but I think you will see
- [00:01:27.651]that it goes beyond sort of that traditional test review where students
- [00:01:31.482]largely just parrot the information in terms of reliability and validity
- [00:01:36.452]evidence that’s reported in the technical manual. And then just sort
- [00:01:40.620]of say whether it computes with established standards or not. It really
- [00:01:43.655]forces them to really do a critical review of all of the sources of
- [00:01:48.699]information that are out there, starting with the Buros reviews that are available
- [00:01:52.574]through our university EBSCO database as well.
- [00:01:54.867]And then looking for other reviews that may have been published in other outlets
- [00:01:58.504]and seeing if there's agreement there and then working their way to the independent
- [00:02:02.674]literature so they can see that there's a lot of information that we have to really
- [00:02:07.244]evaluate for tests and determine whether they're useful in clinical practice or
- [00:02:12.259]not. And it's not as easy as just simply looking at the technical manual at times,
- [00:02:16.295]especially when there's discrepancies in the literature. So the student response
- [00:02:20.735]has been interesting. In their presentations, you can tell, it's clear
- [00:02:24.374]that they have to wrestle with the fact that the Buros review may point out
- [00:02:29.579]certain strengths and limitations. Other reviewers may point out others.
- [00:02:33.041]There may not necessarily be agreement across reviewers. And then you may have
- [00:02:37.046]an independent body of literature that doesn't, that maybe illuminates other
- [00:02:41.471]findings. And it can be really difficult to kind of reconcile. They are wrestling
- [00:02:46.633]with that for the first time in their clinical training. That there aren't
- [00:02:50.858]always black and white scenarios with these matters. So in terms of practical
- [00:02:54.232]suggestions, I think first and foremost, students would benefit from having
- [00:02:58.275]some type of measurement training beforehand. Then they could have
- [00:03:03.628]the skill set to go in and do a competent review that this assignment requires.
- [00:03:07.399]The second thing I'd say is it's useful for instructors to carefully curate the
- [00:03:12.767]tests that are available for students to use in their groups to ensure that there's
- [00:03:18.182]one, a Buros review available and also that there's an adequate body of
- [00:03:22.719]literature so that they will get the full benefit of what the assignment requires.
- [00:03:27.915]So, in closing, if you choose to adopt this course module, I wish you luck,
- [00:03:35.486]and I hope that you find it as beneficial as I have in my courses.
