- [00:00:04.650]My name is Carlos Urrea.
- [00:00:06.800]I am the dry bean breeding specialist here
- [00:00:09.550]at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center
- [00:00:12.459]in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
- [00:00:14.540]I am the dry bean breeding specialist and all
- [00:00:17.170]the dry bean breeding activities here in Scottsbluff.
- [00:00:21.757]And I'm mainly developing beans with high yield potential,
- [00:00:29.010]multi resistant to multiple diseases like bacteria,
- [00:00:32.710]fungal, and also viral diseases.
- [00:00:36.140]Developing beans that has an applied plant architecture.
- [00:00:40.480]And the reason because the bean industry
- [00:00:42.300]is moving towards better harvest,
- [00:00:44.940]earliness also important because beans need to be ready
- [00:00:48.910]to be harvested by September 15th to the 20th
- [00:00:51.490]because of the early frost.
- [00:00:53.870]Also developing beans with drought tolerance,
- [00:00:58.490]because it has seen be shown that we're gonna
- [00:01:02.909]be facing some drought I mean,
- [00:01:05.750]in the near future.
- [00:01:06.950]Anyway, our population is gonna be demanding for more water,
- [00:01:13.090]and also developing beans with high seed quality
- [00:01:17.770]because we're exporting a lot of beans.
- [00:01:20.277]to go out of the States and we had to actually...
- [00:01:23.860]By the way, we have one of the best qualities
- [00:01:25.810]in the United States and also nutritional value because
- [00:01:31.720]we are enhancing the beans for like Iodine and Zinc content
- [00:01:34.850]and bean has a lot of attributes.
- [00:01:37.940]Our role is to develop beans that has a high protein,
- [00:01:44.300]high iodine and zinc content seeds.
- [00:01:47.320]And also the beans that are able to cook faster
- [00:01:53.370]That to me is a Pinto bean from Tanzania.
- [00:01:57.010]And this is a contribution from the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:01.063]Under the this program to the African continent.
- [00:02:03.390]I have been working with the University of Nebraska
- [00:02:06.260]for the last 15 years, but working in dry beans
- [00:02:09.240]for almost 35 years.
- [00:02:11.900]For me to travel, I do have a,
- [00:02:15.009]or have been able to do different projects.
- [00:02:17.480]And also through the dry bean winter nurseries,
- [00:02:22.215]and I've being able to travel to Puerto Rico, New Zealand
- [00:02:25.000]and Africa continent, some countries in Africa.
- [00:02:30.405]And I've been able to find out all the constraints
- [00:02:36.935]that these different countries have
- [00:02:38.868]and have been able to tackle those constraints
- [00:02:40.943]and being able to help them too.
- [00:02:42.890]I have been able to release like three grain
- [00:02:46.680]Northern beans for Nebraska and a Pinto line.
- [00:02:49.510]This is a first upright
- [00:02:52.320]and also slow darkening Pinto bean for Nebraska.
- [00:02:55.380]I have a release of light red Kidney
- [00:02:57.490]and recently I have a Pinto bean
- [00:03:00.208]that's been released in Tanzania and I've been able
- [00:03:02.780]to release several GMO plus in lines
- [00:03:04.880]that have drought tolerance
- [00:03:07.145]and also multiple disease resistance.
- [00:03:09.030]And this line has been used
- [00:03:10.250]by national programs around the world,
- [00:03:14.090]and also used by our colleagues here in the United States.
- [00:03:19.550]One thing that I would like to acknowledge
- [00:03:21.550]the Nebraska dry bean commission
- [00:03:23.230]through the checkoff dollars,
- [00:03:24.950]because they are supporting my program
- [00:03:27.660]and also the UNL ARD division,
- [00:03:30.710]they also supporting my product.
- [00:03:32.280]I mean, giving financial support and to the local grants,
- [00:03:36.520]like for example, Nebraska growing economic grant,
- [00:03:40.156]specialty crop block grant initiative,
- [00:03:42.700]and some of the federal grants that have been able
- [00:03:45.150]to support my program and being able
- [00:03:47.050]to, you know, keep growing my activities.
