- [00:00:05.520]Welcome, I'm Justin McMechan,
- [00:00:06.970]I'm a crop protection in cropping systems specialist
- [00:00:09.230]located the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center
- [00:00:12.330]with the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:13.810]and I'm here standing in the soybean field,
- [00:00:16.630]talking about soybean gall midge,
- [00:00:17.870]which is a new pest of soybeans
- [00:00:20.240]that we just identified in fact right where
- [00:00:22.020]we're standing here in 2018.
- [00:00:24.720]And so this pest has been identified across four states
- [00:00:29.690]and is causing significant economic loss.
- [00:00:32.780]We're trying a lot of different things.
- [00:00:33.970]My area focuses a lot on the biology
- [00:00:36.130]and ecology of this pest.
- [00:00:37.400]Trying to understand its movement,
- [00:00:39.670]how it gets to the field.
- [00:00:40.660]The things that would unlock management for this.
- [00:00:43.730]We're trying a lot of acute practices
- [00:00:45.410]to get growers, to do things,
- [00:00:46.960]but we're not finding anything specific
- [00:00:49.180]that can really manage this.
- [00:00:50.910]And so I work with people like George Graf,
- [00:00:54.090]that have hundreds of lines at their opportunity
- [00:00:59.630]and we have a 750 line study right around us here
- [00:01:02.280]represents some of the genetic diversity
- [00:01:03.850]of the germ plasm of the U.S.
- [00:01:05.750]And we're really hoping to find a resistant
- [00:01:07.710]or tolerant line to soybean gall midge.
- [00:01:10.010]So, right here there's two dead and dying plants,
- [00:01:13.890]that's kind of characteristic, we need to find the larvae
- [00:01:16.350]to be certain at soybean gall midge
- [00:01:17.990]but that's what we see in fields
- [00:01:19.720]as some dead and dying plants
- [00:01:21.680]usually right along the field edge.
- [00:01:23.910]Others are infested like this one down here.
- [00:01:26.700]That's likely infested because no current acute practices
- [00:01:30.810]are providing sufficient control for growers.
- [00:01:34.150]And so this field looks great.
- [00:01:36.230]Driving by this you'd never know
- [00:01:37.770]there was a problem out here.
- [00:01:39.980]But if you get close here, lean down,
- [00:01:42.210]and pull up some plants and I'll just pull out a plant here,
- [00:01:45.700]to show you inside of these plants,
- [00:01:48.223]I just peel this one open, you can see that orange larvae
- [00:01:50.650]right at the tip of my finger
- [00:01:52.660]that is the final end star of soybean gall midge.
- [00:01:56.430]And so this insect feeds and eventually destroys
- [00:02:00.070]the older layer of the phloem of these plants
- [00:02:02.720]and walks its way to the inner part, the xylem,
- [00:02:05.750]cuts off the water and eventually
- [00:02:07.280]what we get is a dead plant.
- [00:02:09.600]But even if this plant doesn't die,
- [00:02:11.110]we're concerned about the yield losses associated with it
- [00:02:14.830]and so, lots of unanswered questions,
- [00:02:19.330]but our breading program and identifying resistance
- [00:02:22.440]is probably one of the core underlying components
- [00:02:25.130]for an IPM program that we're gonna need in the future
- [00:02:27.630]for something like this.
