- [00:00:12.200]State 4-H program leader
- [00:00:13.720]Kathleen Lodl joins us now with the latest.
- [00:00:16.540]Kathleen, thanks for taking the time to chat with us.
- [00:00:18.880]If you would, tell us a little bit about
- [00:00:20.330]how Nebraska fairs have changed for 2020.
- [00:00:25.290]Well Janet, you know amid the pandemic
- [00:00:27.040]we had to lots of things
- [00:00:28.380]to make sure our fair goers and the 4-H'ers
- [00:00:30.800]who showcase their work at those fairs are safe.
- [00:00:33.260]So, we're really fortunate
- [00:00:34.430]that our county fair boards,
- [00:00:35.850]our local extension boards,
- [00:00:37.410]and the public got together to put youth first,
- [00:00:40.240]so that we could have a safe opportunity
- [00:00:41.890]for young people to showcase
- [00:00:43.090]what they do all year.
- [00:00:44.600]And why has that been
- [00:00:45.730]so important for folks to come together
- [00:00:47.290]and make that happen?
- [00:00:50.150]Everybody's wanting something
- [00:00:51.320]that's a little bit more back to normal
- [00:00:53.000]in their communities,
- [00:00:54.140]and 4-H'ers work year round on their projects.
- [00:00:57.100]This gives them a chance to showcase their work.
- [00:00:59.040]It gives people a chance to see
- [00:01:00.460]what young people are doing
- [00:01:01.570]in their communities,
- [00:01:02.730]so the fair is a perfect opportunity
- [00:01:05.290]to come together
- [00:01:06.420]and have those socially distance,
- [00:01:09.480]as safe as possible environments to do that.
- [00:01:12.780]So how did these events specifically
- [00:01:14.830]look different so far this year?
- [00:01:18.190]We've done a lot of social distancing procedures,
- [00:01:20.450]so for example,
- [00:01:21.700]in many cases we split our shows on separate days,
- [00:01:24.700]so that we didn't have as many people
- [00:01:26.270]in one place at the same time.
- [00:01:28.120]We had kids drop off their entries,
- [00:01:30.700]and then they were judged,
- [00:01:32.160]and then they went back home
- [00:01:33.510]that same day or the day after.
- [00:01:35.420]So in some cases
- [00:01:36.330]there really wasn't the opportunity,
- [00:01:38.100]dependent on the outbreak in that area,
- [00:01:40.470]of people to look at the exhibits.
- [00:01:42.240]But in other counties
- [00:01:43.300]they were able to do that.
- [00:01:44.370]We had the displays socially distanced.
- [00:01:46.460]People were able to come in
- [00:01:47.610]see the exhibits.
- [00:01:48.950]In some of our livestock shows
- [00:01:50.270]we limited the number in attendance at those shows.
- [00:01:53.140]We did some shows where the young people
- [00:01:55.070]brought in their animals,
- [00:01:56.070]showed the animals,
- [00:01:56.950]and went home that same afternoon
- [00:01:58.900]just to keep things as safe as we could.
- [00:02:00.940]So what has been the response
- [00:02:02.700]to these changed measures this year?
- [00:02:06.480]By in large communities were extremely supportive, Janet.
- [00:02:09.560]Everybody wants things to work out,
- [00:02:11.330]especially for young people.
- [00:02:12.670]And so people were supportive.
- [00:02:14.360]They dealt well with the changes.
- [00:02:15.920]And in many cases
- [00:02:17.300]those changes are things we'll look at in the future,
- [00:02:19.590]because it allowed more access by more people.
- [00:02:22.230]Face booking of shows, live remotes,
- [00:02:24.500]all of those kinds of things
- [00:02:25.640]are things we'll probably keep doing in the future.
- [00:02:28.030]All right, well Kathleen
- [00:02:28.930]thank you very much for the update.
- [00:02:30.090]We appreciate it.
- [00:02:30.970]Nebraska state 4-H program leader
- [00:02:32.710]Kathleen Lodl joining us,
