[00:00:14.430]In normal times, your faculty, family and friends
[00:00:17.490]would be gathered at Pinnacle Bank Arena
[00:00:19.740]for our formal commencement ceremony.
[00:00:22.370]It's always my favorite time of the year.
[00:00:25.300]In fact, the University of Nebraska
[00:00:27.530]has celebrated commencement with a formal ceremony
[00:00:30.250]nearly every year, since 1869, with very few exceptions.
[00:00:35.730]One of those commencement cancellations was,
[00:00:38.110]believe it or not, during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.
[00:00:42.970]Back then, as now, we didn't let world events get in the way
[00:00:46.950]of figuring out other ways
[00:00:48.530]to recognize the great accomplishments of our graduates.
[00:00:52.680]The pandemic forced us to go virtual
[00:00:55.010]for our May graduation celebration, and once again,
[00:00:58.670]we are online celebrating our August graduates.
[00:01:02.420]So we're bringing back some of the best moments
[00:01:04.630]from the May show, plus adding some special new features
[00:01:08.260]just for our August graduates.

[00:01:51.970]No question, it has been a challenging four or five months
[00:01:55.710]for all of us around the world,
[00:01:57.980]but I could not be prouder of how this class
[00:02:00.870]showed their true grit as everything changed.
[00:02:04.670]We asked a few graduates
[00:02:06.160]how they made the best of the situation.
[00:02:10.260]I felt like I was just thrown in all of a sudden
[00:02:12.330]to a new environment.
[00:02:13.340]My only recital I have (laughs) for the degree
[00:02:17.680]was planned to be in April.
[00:02:20.050]Every single professor found a way
[00:02:23.380]to get as much of a personal experience
[00:02:26.010]as when we were together in a classroom
[00:02:28.340]through Zoom, through video.
[00:02:31.240]It was such a great experience, and I think they,
[00:02:34.030]they went well above and beyond with trying
[00:02:36.160]to really make things personal,
[00:02:37.930]really make themselves accessible,
[00:02:40.580]even in such a difficult time.
[00:02:42.690]So, I was an RA, or resident assistant,
[00:02:46.340]and then all of a sudden the dorms needed to close
[00:02:49.180]after spring break.
[00:02:50.550]I had 48 girls, which was pretty much a full floor,
[00:02:55.030]and some of them were international.
[00:02:56.390]I had a couple of girls from Rwanda, I had people Malaysia,
[00:02:59.860]I had people that were really going through it
[00:03:01.730]'cause they can't go home,
[00:03:03.400]and then they had that worry of being homeless.
[00:03:05.330]I talked to the director of housing and I asked,
[00:03:07.870]because I was nervous once we consolidated, I'm like,
[00:03:10.067]"I've been telling my international students
[00:03:11.990]that they're always gonna have a place to live,
[00:03:14.460]what's happening?" and he even told me,
[00:03:16.337]"Christa, there's no way any student will become homeless."
[00:03:20.560]I felt like everything
[00:03:21.870]was just kinda catered towards the student.
[00:03:23.750]My professor, she was really good about checking in
[00:03:25.890]with her students, being flexible with deadlines,
[00:03:28.370]and having a personal relationships
[00:03:30.150]with each and every one of her students,
[00:03:32.620]and having that two-way communication,
[00:03:34.730]like going back and forth to the point where I was like,
[00:03:37.200]you wanted to perform well in the classroom
[00:03:39.210]just because you knew your professor cared.
[00:03:41.050]And once you add that into the equation, I mean,
[00:03:43.630]that's like some of the best learning I've had so far.
[00:03:47.190]My studio professor kinda went above and beyond
[00:03:50.480]before this whole pandemic started.
[00:03:52.160]He made himself available to us at all hours.
[00:03:55.540]And so we kinda thought this might stop, but instead,
[00:03:57.760]he kinda set up this unlimited-office-hour situation,
[00:04:00.830]and then you just could pop in and out
[00:04:02.640]of a meeting with him, check in,
[00:04:05.940]it was always just really, really helpful.
[00:04:08.280]You just, sometimes you don't think that that's,
[00:04:11.534]a professor would go so far
[00:04:12.800]to make sure everything's going right for you
[00:04:15.060]when things may not be going great for them either.
[00:04:17.900]They really looked out for me
[00:04:20.380]and cared about getting to know me
[00:04:24.270]and being able to help me succeed.
[00:04:26.660]I feel like UNL handled it really well.
[00:04:30.130]Everyone knows Harvard,
[00:04:31.070]and I'm not trying to throw them under the bus, but I am,
[00:04:34.040]because they kicked their students out
[00:04:35.450]and they had nowhere to go.
[00:04:36.640]People actually wanna get to know you,
[00:04:37.980]people actually care about you,
[00:04:39.280]and that's a reflection of the students,
[00:04:42.840]that's a reflection of the faculty and staff,
[00:04:44.030]that's a reflection of the professors at UNL.

[00:04:52.481]and there truly is no place like Nebraska.

[00:06:11.765]what advice would you like to share with our graduates?
[00:06:16.203]All I'd like to say to all of your graduates,
[00:06:18.230]is that investing in yourself
[00:06:20.040]is the best investment you'll ever make.
[00:06:23.190]What I learned at UNL 70 years ago
[00:06:25.620]still gives huge dividends to me throughout my lifetime,
[00:06:28.990]and it'll do the same for you as well.

[00:08:18.730]The NU Coliseum is an iconic campus building.
[00:08:22.080]Today, students have access to it's polished hardwood floors
[00:08:25.940]for intramural sports
[00:08:27.520]and other campus recreation activities.
[00:08:30.860]But the Coliseum hosted many years
[00:08:32.940]of sold-out volleyball games until Husker volleyball
[00:08:35.800]moved to Devaney Sports Center in 2013.
[00:08:39.710]We actually celebrated commencement here starting in 1926.
[00:08:44.880]Over the years,
[00:08:45.950]the ceremony has been held at various other locations,
[00:08:49.080]including outdoors by Memorial Stadium,
[00:08:51.840]the downtown Pershing Auditorium,
[00:08:54.180]and the Devaney Sports Center.
[00:08:56.130]With record enrollments in recent years,
[00:08:58.250]our graduating class outgrew even the Devaney Center.
[00:09:01.920]So these days, in normal times,
[00:09:04.650]we hold ceremonies in Pinnacle Bank Arena.
[00:09:07.950]It offers more than 15,000 seats for family and friends.
[00:09:14.430]If you haven't been on campus this summer,
[00:09:16.710]there have been a few big changes and signs of progress.
[00:09:20.650]On East campus, renovation is well underway
[00:09:23.460]at C.Y. Thompson library, to create a new learning commons,
[00:09:27.150]and the Nebraska East Union renovation
[00:09:29.200]is in the home stretch.
[00:09:31.290]The first phase of the College of Engineering's upgrade
[00:09:33.870]is nearing the halfway point of construction.
[00:09:36.860]The final steel beam
[00:09:38.150]will be hoisted into place later this month.
[00:09:41.550]And Mabel Lee Hall is gone.
[00:09:43.670]Construction is beginning here
[00:09:45.310]on a modern replacement building
[00:09:47.040]scheduled to be completed in 2022.
[00:09:50.370]The new facility will create new classrooms and office space
[00:09:54.150]for the College of Education and Human Sciences.
[00:09:57.330]That college, once called Teachers' College,
[00:10:00.520]is where Marilyn Moore began her journey
[00:10:02.950]to a lifelong career in education.
[00:10:05.990]She served 40 years as a middle school teacher,
[00:10:09.410]a human resources administrator,
[00:10:11.760]and associate superintendent of Lincoln's public schools.
[00:10:15.690]As an encore career, Dr. Moore served
[00:10:18.400]as President of Bryan College of Health Sciences.
[00:10:21.660]She has been recognized with numerous awards,
[00:10:24.300]including our university's Outstanding Alumnus Award.
[00:10:28.760]Dr. Moore has served on dozens
[00:10:30.650]of community boards and organizations,
[00:10:33.160]including President of the Lead Center Advisory Board,
[00:10:36.560]and is a new member
[00:10:37.750]of the Nebraska Alumni Association Executive Board.
[00:10:41.670]I'm so pleased to welcome Mariyln Moore back to campus
[00:10:45.520]as our speaker today.
[00:10:47.420]She reflects on literature and life in her talk titled,
[00:10:51.540]The Air Between Us.
[00:10:53.449](upbeat music)
[00:10:56.390]The air between us, a phrase uttered by Edward,
[00:10:59.600]a teenage boy, who's the main character in the novel,
[00:11:02.857]"Dear Edward" by Ann Napolitano.
[00:11:05.630]This is a story of a boy who is the sole survivor
[00:11:08.540]of an airplane crash,
[00:11:09.900]and it's based on a real crash in 2010.
[00:11:13.690]In the novel, Edward has to rebuild his life physically,
[00:11:17.230]cognitively, socially, emotionally, in absolutely every way.
[00:11:22.650]While living with his aunt and uncle in a home
[00:11:25.010]that is new to him, a new community, a new school
[00:11:28.830]and blessedly, a new best friend, Shay,
[00:11:31.790]a girl, his own age who lives next door,
[00:11:34.360]who manages the just right balance of watches-out-for-him
[00:11:37.990]and cuts-him-no-slack.
[00:11:40.140]His high school Physics teacher introduces him
[00:11:42.670]to the Large Hadron Collider
[00:11:44.570]and the research on particle physics
[00:11:46.680]attempting to answer the questions
[00:11:48.350]of the smallest particles, their speed, their behavior,
[00:11:52.240]their relationship to one another.
[00:11:54.610]In Edward's mind, the questions are at the very heart
[00:11:57.700]of existence, his and everyone else's.
[00:12:01.140]And as the story draws to an end and Edward is healing,
[00:12:04.740]is stronger in every way, he reflects on all the people
[00:12:08.210]who were a part of his rebuilding process,
[00:12:11.160]especially his uncle, his physics teacher,
[00:12:14.000]his principal, and Shay.
[00:12:16.430]And in reflecting, he utters the words,
[00:12:18.747]"The air between us is not dead space."
[00:12:23.090]I'm struck by Edward's story for so many reasons.
[00:12:26.250]I started my career as a middle school teacher,
[00:12:28.920]and I shall always and forever have a special place
[00:12:31.480]in my heart for the students in the middle.
[00:12:34.240]Edward was 12 when the plane crashed,
[00:12:36.610]right in the middle of middle school,
[00:12:38.600]which is a hard time for most early adolescents.
[00:12:41.990]Like Edward, I'm attracted to the wonders
[00:12:44.270]of our world revealed by the physicists
[00:12:46.540]and the metaphors for life from particle physics.
[00:12:49.760]And like Edward, I wonder about the air between us
[00:12:53.300]and I so agree that it is anything but dead space.
[00:12:58.630]The past five months, in which all of you
[00:13:00.870]who are graduating today have completed your degrees
[00:13:03.880]in a manner never before considered,
[00:13:06.220]have given us ample opportunity
[00:13:08.080]to consider the air between us.
[00:13:10.130]The great disruptors, a worldwide pandemic,
[00:13:13.230]unlike any in the past 100 years,
[00:13:15.890]and a worldwide reaction and revulsion
[00:13:18.440]to the murder of a black man
[00:13:20.270]by a Minneapolis white police officer,
[00:13:22.610]have sent waves of questions,
[00:13:24.750]doubts and fears through the air between us.
[00:13:28.460]I call these events disruptors because they have been,
[00:13:31.920]they are, and they will continue to disrupt our lives,
[00:13:35.530]our individual lives and our collective communal lives.
[00:13:39.100]The pandemic has changed how we work, how we learn,
[00:13:42.530]how we socialize, how we transact business,
[00:13:45.690]how we travel, how we worship.
[00:13:48.170]It has changed how medical care is delivered,
[00:13:50.550]how courtroom cases are heard,
[00:13:52.530]how legislatures conduct business,
[00:13:54.830]and how children are educated.
[00:13:57.400]George Floyd's murder and the subsequent racial unrest
[00:14:00.610]has caused people in this country and around the world
[00:14:04.300]to reconsider what they believe to be true about history,
[00:14:07.440]to compare what a community's or nation's stated values are
[00:14:11.810]to the lived experiences of people
[00:14:13.740]within that community or nation, and to think again
[00:14:17.060]about language, and symbols, and power, and voice.
[00:14:22.440]These have been hard moments as we have confronted
[00:14:25.600]that which was in the air between us.
[00:14:28.480]And yet, through these moments of questions,
[00:14:31.210]and doubts, and fears, there have been other moments,
[00:14:34.320]moments that remind us and make clear to us the connections
[00:14:37.810]we share with one another in the air between us.
[00:14:41.700]Both disruptors made abundantly clear
[00:14:43.950]that no one stands alone.
[00:14:45.910]That the idea of the rugged individual is far less viable
[00:14:49.640]than the idea of the common good.
[00:14:52.740]We are absolutely dependent upon one another
[00:14:55.160]to emerge from the pandemic.
[00:14:57.230]We're dependent upon the scientists
[00:14:58.940]to understand the disease and to develop a vaccine.
[00:15:02.130]We are dependent upon the health care workers
[00:15:04.210]to provide the highest level of care
[00:15:06.400]for those now 15 plus million persons worldwide
[00:15:10.210]who have contracted COVID-19.
[00:15:12.780]We're dependent upon essential workers.
[00:15:15.400]Those who could not work from home
[00:15:17.460]so that we could have groceries, and transportation,
[00:15:20.560]and protection of life and property.
[00:15:23.200]And we are dependent upon our neighbors and colleagues,
[00:15:26.060]they who make wise decisions to halt the spread of the virus
[00:15:29.430]and in so doing make the community safer for everyone.
[00:15:33.770]We are absolutely dependent upon one another
[00:15:36.060]to emerge through the very real racial unrest and tension
[00:15:39.810]that has marked the past three months
[00:15:42.130]and the previous four centuries.
[00:15:44.730]This is a time that forces those of us
[00:15:46.770]in the majority culture to confront
[00:15:49.020]and acknowledge our own biases and actions,
[00:15:52.250]our part in a society marked by systemic racism.
[00:15:55.970]This is communal work.
[00:15:57.410]It is work that happens because we listen,
[00:16:00.000]we hear, we reflect, and we act.
[00:16:03.620]With both disruptors, we have the opportunity
[00:16:06.480]to create new knowledge, new connections,
[00:16:09.190]and new stories in the air between us.
[00:16:11.930]Because that air between us, as Edward recognized,
[00:16:15.160]is not dead space.
[00:16:17.640]One person ill in one part of the world is followed
[00:16:21.150]by more than 15 million people ill around the world
[00:16:24.940]because the virus recognizes no boundaries.
[00:16:28.300]We are connected to one another.
[00:16:30.970]One black person killed by one white police officer
[00:16:34.610]unleashed action and reflection around the world.
[00:16:38.510]We are connected to one another,
[00:16:41.140]and in the days going forward,
[00:16:42.900]we have the grand opportunity to do better,
[00:16:45.820]to strengthen communities,
[00:16:47.380]to take actions for health and healing,
[00:16:50.010]to make decisions for the greater good.
[00:16:53.080]And you, graduates of the class of 2020, are in the best
[00:16:57.330]of positions to help the world write a better story
[00:17:00.550]to strengthen the air between us.
[00:17:02.920]A story of regard for science
[00:17:04.800]and regard for the inherent value of humankind.
[00:17:08.110]A story of connections, rather than divisions.
[00:17:10.870]A story of hope, rather than fear.
[00:17:13.760]Every discipline represented by you, the graduates of 2020,
[00:17:18.250]connects to and lends value to the story of connectedness

[00:17:32.057]"When you see something that is not right, not just,
[00:17:35.860]not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something,

[00:17:42.030]Our children and their children will ask us,
[00:17:45.210]what did you do?
[00:17:46.890]What did you say?"
[00:17:49.220]Edward was captivated by the study
[00:17:51.020]of the subatomic particles in the air between us.
[00:17:54.100]Some physicists describe those particles
[00:17:56.390]as bundles of potential.
[00:17:58.780]I love that phrase,
[00:18:00.200]the image of light and energy, all bundled together,
[00:18:03.100]ready to explode into action, and effect, and impact.
[00:18:08.010]Poised on the precipice of this next step,
[00:18:11.010]you are a bundle of potential.

[00:20:14.940]had to have to establish this great university in 1869.

[00:20:30.360]that Nebraska's flagship land grant university

[00:27:46.700]Academic costumes date back to the 12th and 13th centuries

[00:27:58.000]long gowns, probably for warmth in unheated buildings.

[00:28:13.080]with the turning of the tassel on your cap.
