- [00:00:00.054](birds chirping)
- [00:00:02.150]These are De Chaunac vines
- [00:00:04.090]that have been cut off at the base,
- [00:00:06.550]and regrowing new trunks.
- [00:00:10.470]And several shoots have been retained
- [00:00:14.280]in order to disperse the nutrients and metabolites
- [00:00:23.010]that the vine would be producing from the roots,
- [00:00:25.610]which would be quite strong.
- [00:00:29.180]The vineyard manager will take into account
- [00:00:33.200]that one or two of the best shoots
- [00:00:37.120]will be the ones to use for the new trunks
- [00:00:40.570]in the next year.
- [00:00:41.680]So, this growth actually has taken place
- [00:00:45.770]in a matter of a few months after cutting the vine off
- [00:00:49.280]at the base.
- [00:00:50.810]Why cut it off at the base?
- [00:00:52.410]Well, the vines were becoming less productive
- [00:00:55.750]and although we don't know for sure
- [00:00:57.710]whether they became less productive because of winter injury
- [00:01:03.020]or grapevine trunk disease, probably a combination of both.
- [00:01:09.750]So this is remedial action a grower can take
- [00:01:13.600]to retrain new trunks and refurbish the vine
- [00:01:20.430]to the point where next year it should begin to produce.
- [00:01:24.490]Go.
- [00:01:27.120]The vineyard manager has tied up these trunks,
- [00:01:31.180]selected several of the best ones,
- [00:01:34.170]and these are already bringing them up
- [00:01:38.070]after eight weeks of growth
- [00:01:42.440]has taken place since the old trunks were cut off.
- [00:01:47.860]And this gives him some vertical growth
- [00:01:52.060]that will be easily managed next year.
- [00:01:56.340](birds chirping)
- [00:02:00.600]These are a couple of examples of the trunks
- [00:02:02.850]that were cut off.
- [00:02:06.108]The vines had become unproductive.
- [00:02:08.380]You can see that they're very difficult to manage,
- [00:02:11.250]they've become sprawling around.
- [00:02:13.900]This one has a split trunk,
- [00:02:17.890]so this is definitely a non-productive vine.
- [00:02:24.170]Cutting them off as we've just discussed
- [00:02:27.800]enables regrowth that will be perfect,
- [00:02:32.620]easily managed by the vineyard manager next year.
- [00:02:39.023](bright upbeat music)
