- [00:00:00.940]Hello, my name is Sally Clayshulte
- [00:00:03.240]and I'm the weed breeding manager
- [00:00:04.770]here at Beaver Crossing Nebraska for BASF.
- [00:00:09.890]Well I'd like to welcome you today to our breeding station
- [00:00:14.060]and we'll have a virtual tour through the station today.
- [00:00:19.130]The station was started, the program was started in 2010
- [00:00:23.340]and we moved to this facility in 2014.
- [00:00:26.760]During the tour we're going to visit several different areas
- [00:00:30.210]our quality lab, some pathology work in the greenhouse
- [00:00:34.400]and our green house facility
- [00:00:36.480]and our processing room.
- [00:00:38.805]Hello again
- [00:00:39.920]Our site sits on 400 acres of prime farm ground in Nebraska,
- [00:00:45.100]right off of I-80.
- [00:00:49.051]We share the site with a soy bean breeding program
- [00:00:52.177]and this is their crossing block,
- [00:00:55.630]that's getting ready to happen in just a couple of weeks.
- [00:01:00.150]The site has 12 scientist, 6 technicians
- [00:01:04.940]and 15 contingent laborers
- [00:01:08.350]working at the site here around.
- [00:01:13.400]Hi, I'm Brit Kaufman,
- [00:01:14.940]the weed quality manager for BASF in North America.
- [00:01:18.530]Welcome to the weed quality lab.
- [00:01:20.780]The final step of our breeding process
- [00:01:23.610]is to evaluate the lines as they come through the program
- [00:01:27.220]for how they are going to perform
- [00:01:28.360]in an end product characteristics.
- [00:01:30.870]So, here in the lab, we're doing very early testing
- [00:01:35.140]for early raw material, all the way through
- [00:01:37.470]to a mixing test, that's going on behind us.
- [00:01:41.060]This is a mixograph instrument, its kind of
- [00:01:43.720]the gold standard for breeding programs in North America
- [00:01:46.910]for delineating which lines or hybrids are gonna be
- [00:01:50.850]meeting customers specifications in the end user.
- [00:01:54.410]And we also have other instrumentation in the lab.
- [00:01:57.180]A glutopeak instrument for measuring gluten quality.
- [00:02:00.440]As well as, an extensive graph and farinograph also here
- [00:02:05.260]that are used very heavily in the commercial industry.
- [00:02:09.310]Hi, we're in our greenhouse facility,
- [00:02:11.890]where we're getting ready for the next cycle.
- [00:02:14.230]Our next greenhouse cycle.
- [00:02:16.000]In the greenhouse is where we make
- [00:02:17.480]all of our new genetic combinations.
- [00:02:27.530]This facility has eight different chambers,
- [00:02:30.040]with two of them being temperature control.
- [00:02:35.960]In this chamber, our pathologist is finishing some testing
- [00:02:41.578](mumbles) is ready to be harvested
- [00:02:44.840]and evaluated for their reaction to disease.
- [00:02:48.664]Hi, this is our vernalization chamber.
- [00:02:51.800]This is where our plants are started
- [00:02:54.400]and they stay in this chamber for eight weeks.
- [00:02:58.360]During those eight weeks the plants are sampled,
- [00:03:02.137]leaf-sampled and those samples are sent
- [00:03:04.850]to our molecular marker labs and markers are (mumbles).
- [00:03:10.600]One of the many activities in plant breeding is
- [00:03:13.070]seed-processing and here we are in our main threshing room
- [00:03:16.640]and we've got some single head threshers
- [00:03:18.970]and some small plot threshers in this room
- [00:03:22.966]where we can thresh the grain
- [00:03:24.410]and then as we subsequently move on in the process.
- [00:03:28.200]We have cleaning activities and other threshing going on.
- [00:03:33.480]At this facility we have an overhead
- [00:03:36.920]drive through breeze way which makes it really nice
- [00:03:39.220]in wheat harvest time so we can be in the shade
- [00:03:41.500]while we're processing material.
- [00:03:43.620]And then as the flow of material comes through.
- [00:03:46.160]We have other instruments, cleaners,
- [00:03:48.840]and color sorting instruments to clean
- [00:03:52.530]and further process our seed
- [00:03:54.310]until we've moved into an inventory step
- [00:03:56.650]to keep track of all this.
- [00:03:58.330]This room is a very large room
- [00:04:00.780]that's built to be very flexible
- [00:04:03.470]and as the seasons come and go
- [00:04:05.520]we can change activities and change layouts.
- [00:04:08.150]At this facility, we also have a soybean breeding program,
- [00:04:11.060]which also utilizes this space for
- [00:04:13.300]their seed handling processing activities.
