[00:00:12.030]Many people do not know much about triticale
[00:00:14.520]but it's a cross between durum wheat.
[00:00:17.000]Durum wheat is what you make pasta products out of,
[00:00:19.520]spaghetti that type of thing and rye.
[00:00:22.920]So it's genomes are A and B and R for rye.
[00:00:27.200]Common wheat is A and B durum wheat
[00:00:30.340]and D which gives you common wheat.
[00:00:34.580]Now, the reason why we grow triticale
[00:00:36.990]is because it's a very good biomass crop
[00:00:40.490]and it's a very, very good forage crop.
[00:00:44.600]So it's often used for grazing,
[00:00:47.400]it's used for haylage and it's used for silage.
[00:00:50.610]And the reason why we're here is
[00:00:51.990]I just wanted to give you an idea of how much biomass,
[00:00:55.290]how tall it grows.
[00:00:56.990]This is it flowering, many people cut it before
[00:00:59.350]it gets this tall, fits into their rotations really well
[00:01:02.740]where they plant it over the winter.
[00:01:04.640]It's a winter grain, just like wheat planted the same time.
[00:01:08.090]Then it gets a little bit...
[00:01:10.620]It grows, usually they don't wait till flowering.
[00:01:12.820]They can, but if they don't wait till flowering,
[00:01:15.200]they will cut it
[00:01:16.033]and then they'll come in with another silage crop
[00:01:18.050]like a sorghum-sudangrass or a forage sorghum.
[00:01:22.840]So it gives growers a real opportunity.
[00:01:25.030]Now it's also a very pretty good grain for feed grains.

[00:01:30.610]and we're hopefully gonna start making it
[00:01:32.320]and seeing if we can make some human food products

[00:01:36.610]But I just wanted to introduce you to triticale.
[00:01:39.620]It is a cross between durum wheat and rye.
[00:01:42.900]It does not break down to rye.
[00:01:46.110]Oftentimes people would find rye in the triticale fields
[00:01:49.200]that's only because the combiner said, cut triticale
[00:01:52.780]often cut rye at the same time
[00:01:55.260]and they couldn't clean out their combines.
[00:01:57.060]But triticale is a very stable crop
[00:01:59.290]the same way as we never see any of the wild progenitors
[00:02:02.770]come out of common weed.
[00:02:04.480]But I just wanted to give you a feel for the diversity of
[00:02:08.800]triticale and it's a product,
[00:02:11.000]the new crop that may be coming to you at some time
[00:02:13.420]in the future if you're an unfamiliar with it now.
[00:02:17.790]This is a very interesting triticale
[00:02:20.200]because it has very short ons.

[00:02:25.890]The reason why that's important is that
[00:02:28.820]when animals eat hay, the ons can stick in their cheeks
[00:02:34.360]and then get infected that it can give them lock jaw.
[00:02:37.430]So we're trying to breed triticale with no ons
[00:02:40.890]or very, very short ons.
[00:02:43.140]And this is what looks like a pretty good biomass triticale
[00:02:46.160]would be great for silage also very short ons
[00:02:49.740]so that if it was insiled,
[00:02:52.530]these ons would not be so harmful to the animals.
[00:02:56.530]So we're always thinking about the end use product triticale
[00:03:00.480]bio-mass, straw could be used for silage,
[00:03:04.720]could be used for haylage,
[00:03:06.610]but we're trying to get the ons as short as possible.
[00:03:09.590]For our grain types, we do not care if it has ons
[00:03:12.740]or on lists because the animal will be eating the grain,
[00:03:16.937]not the full head with the ons on it.
